Introduction

Antique objects by their very nature are diverse in use and theme, often of rare material and for purpose less required today perhaps than in the past. The cover detail, of the exquisite conch shell on page 18, carved to show the image of a beautiful young woman as a portrait cameo so fashionable for use in lockets and brooches has been left in its original form perhaps to tell a tale of unrequited love. Very rarely though does the manufacture of objects for popular use have a strong political message. The caddy on page 79 is such an exception. It was made for an individual determined to give voice and show allegiance to the abolition of the slave trade. The portrayal of a kneeling man in gilded chains subjugated but dignified was the image created in the sunset years of the 18th century for medals and coins, by the abolitionist Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795), to bring attention to the growing cause of anger against the vileness of slavery. This possibly unique caddy was used to serve tea amongst the fragrant society of England while sending a clear message of conscience to the guests. We hope you enjoy the many rare and fascinating objects in our 2014 catalogue of objects which have given us a sense of wonder that is a pleasure to share.

A ‘74 Ship’ was a two decked Ship of the Line normally carrying seventy four guns. It was originally developed by the French Navy in the middle of the 18th century and adopted by the Royal Navy after the 1760’s. The design of the 74’s approached the limits of what was possible with contemporary construction techniques due to their long length. The lower gun deck carried thirty six pound guns and the upper deck eighteen pound guns on the upper gun deck, with nine pound guns on the upper works. The full complement was usually seven hundred men with a standard length of about one hundred and sixty feet. During the Napoleonic wars which continued from 1793 until 1815, large numbers of French sailors were taken prisoner. They were held at over thirty prisons in the British Isles, most notoriously Norman Cross near Huntington and in prison hulks on the south coast. Conditions for the prisoners were appalling, due in part to a dispute between the warring nations as to who was responsible for the maintenance of the prisoners. They had to survive and find a means of

paying for necessities, so prison markets grew up in which goods were sold and bartered; these included straw pictures, hair bracelets and chains and famously, models of ships made in both boxwood and bone. The latter were sought after and often sold for high prices, and as the market developed some were probably made to commission and perhaps with materials brought into the prisons. Many of the French sailors were conscripts and as conscription was pursued vigorously it would have embraced many craftsmen, including ivory and jet carvers from Dieppe and Brittany and also ship builders. The intricate details for the guns and mechanisms, such as on this model, would have been made by jewellers and watchmakers. The degree of skill and knowledge of a ship’s construction, and the degree of accuracy of detail displayed in this model can thus be explained. At the end of the war a number of prisoners remained in Britain, preferring to continue this profitable work rather an uncertain future in France.

The firm of J.J. Ducel were a foundry specialising in cast-iron sculptures and architectural fittings. They are famous for the exceptionally high quality of their casting, and of the original models commissioned by them. From 1810 they are recorded as being based at Poce in the Pas-deCalais. Their production was rarely

signed by the sculptor and only the finer pieces, such as this pair, carried any foundry mark. Following the death of Monsieur Ducel in 1878, the factory was sold to the Fonderie de la Haute-Marne and all of the firm’s models and patterns were subsequently bought by the Val d’Osne foundry – initially formed by the merging of a number of smaller independent foundries. The combined factories of Val d’Osne led the world in the production of fine cast iron statues and other architectural decorative elements. They built a reputation for exceptional quality on the back of the rapid technical advances in casting as the late 19th century developed. They combined this with employing established sculptors, many of whom exhibited at the Paris Salons, and together this resulted in the firm producing the most sought after iron work ever created. The foundry exhibited in the London 1851 and 1862 Great Exhibitions, the Paris Exhibition of 1878 and the 1893 Chicago Great Exhibition.

A CALAMANDER WOOD TEA CADDY The Mark II was designed in 1874. Lighter and more mobile than the Mark I, the longer barrel also gave the gun a slightly higher muzzle velocity. The 9 pounder was in service with E/B Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, at Maiwand and with other British artillery units during the Afghanistan campaign. It was a rifled muzzle loader firing a 9lbs. 12 oz. projectile to a maximum range of 4000 yards. The charge weighed 1lb 12oz. giving a muzzle velocity of 1330 feet per second. The weight of the gun on its carriage was 9cwt and together with the limber, 35 cwt. This meant that the gun could be manhandled by its detachment over difficult terrain.

A fine mid 19th century dome topped tea caddy, opening to two further domed tea canisters marked G (green tea) and B (black tea) for the types of tea. All with brass stringing and finely figured calamander veneers. England, circa 1870 Height: 7in/18cm Width: 9½in/24.5cm Depth: 5in/13cm O3C0016

O3D0070 TOUCANS

The hallmarks appear to be a mix of Austrian and German, one set of marks (WILH.GIESE & moon and crown) is very likely to be for Wilhelm Theodor Christian Giese, jeweller, gold and silversmith of Hamburg; while the Diana’s head mark is the Austrian control mark valid between 1872 and 1922. The jug may have crossed the borders at some point, hence the presence of two separate hallmarks.

A SILVER CONDIMENT SET A rare set of silver condiment holders by Alexander Crichton, naturalistically fashioned into the form of acorns, including four salts as cupules with gilt interiors and spoons, each with an acorn finial, two pepper pots with removal nut and a mustard pot with a hinged lid, all resting on oak leaf sprigs. England, circa 1879 Height: 3¼in/8.5cm Width: 3½in/9.5cm Depth: 3in/7.5cm

Alexander Crichton produced some of the finest whimsical silver in the repertoire of the English silversmith, seemingly inspired by the drawings of Sir John Tenniel for Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland (1865) and Alice through the Looking Glass (1872). Crichton’s greatest triumphs are a series of silver mounted glass claret jugs in the form of animals and birds, made by Crichton between 1881 and 1882. The bodies are of glass

and the heads and feet are in silver. By 1880 he was in partnership with Charles John Curry, trading as Crichton and Curry. They were listed as designers, modellers and silversmiths and like many in the luxury goods business, they did not survive the severe recession of the early 1880’s. The partnership was dissolved by October 1884 and Crichton was declared bankrupt in December 1886.

The image depicted on this rare ivory tea caddy is of an “African in Chains in a Supplicating Posture,” and is one of the earliest symbols of slavery’s brutality, created to depict the ignominy of the slave trade. In 1787 Granville Sharp and Thomas Clarkson formed the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade. Influential figures such as William Wilberforce, John Wesley and Josiah Wedgwood also gave their full support to the campaign and were instrumental in promoting the society’s cause in both parliamentary and public circles. No one knows for sure who designed and engraved the society’s seal, but historians attribute it to either William Hackwood or Henry Webber, who both worked at Wedgwood’s factory in Staffordshire. Medallions were manufactured in great quantity by Wedgwood, with the words “Am I Not A Man and A Brother?” surrounding the solitary figure, who

is shown kneeling and in chains. In 1788 a consignment of these cameos was shipped to Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia, where the medallions became a fashion statement for abolitionists and anti-slavery sympathizers. They were worn as bracelets and as hair ornaments, and even inlaid with gold as ornaments for snuff boxes. Soon the fashion extended to the general public. Franklin was particularly interested in the art of pottery and his appreciation of Wedgwood’s art is seen from his reply to Josiah on receipt of the gift of slave medallions. He wrote: “I am distributing your valuable present of cameos among my friends in whose countenances I have seen such marks of being affected by contemplating the figure of the Suppliant (which is admirably executed) that I am persuaded it may have an effect equal to that of the best written pamphlet in procuring honour to those oppressed people”.

A SILVER PLATED WATERING CAN A silver-plated miniature watering can, designed by Christopher Dresser, with the maker’s marks of Hukin & Heath, retaining its original cross-woven wicker handles, in the Japanese style. England, circa 1895 Height: 6½in/16.5cm Width: 8in/20cm Depth: 3½in/8.5cm O3D0232

Jonathan Wilson Hukin and John Thomas Heath established Hukin & Heath in Birmingham in 1855. By the early 1880s, J.T. Hukin retired, and J.T. Heath continued with his new associate, John Hartshorne Middleton (1886). The company closed in 1953. Dr Christopher Dresser was one of the first industrial designers in Europe. A pure product of the Victorian area, Dresser focussed on machine production at the Government School of Design in London between 1847 and 1854. Dresser placed great emphasis on function and efficient use of materials. Dresser was also the first European designer to visit Japan since the country opened its frontiers in 1953. He was invited by the Japanese Government in 1876 to discover the Imperial Collections and review their traditional manufactures. Dresser also took the opportunity to study the strict geometry of Japanese everyday objects and published his findings in the scholarly Japan, its Architecture, Art and Art Manufacturers in 1882.

A prolific designer, Dresser worked closely with over 30 British manufacturers, including Minton, Elkington and Hukin & Heath. Dresser was involved with Hukin & Heath very early on. Their first collaboration was entered in the Patent Office Design Registry in 1878, and were marked “Designed by Dr C. Dresser”. This kettle was part of a collection designed between 1892 and 1894, after a modest water jug in the Shosoin Treasure House in Nara’s Imperial Collections. The collection comprised a number of elongated decanters (one with Mallett), a candle holder and a tea set, all unsigned. The kettle reflects the restraint with which the Japanese use lines and materials to emphasise function rather than form. The cross woven wicker handle is also reminiscent of traditional Japanese materials.
