Lillemer 35111 . . . . . . . . . . . . . B3 Archaeological centre

The centre has been designed as a discovery tool to help people understand the archaeological site in Lillemer. The town of Lillemer is set on one of the four rocky massifs that overlook Mont-Saint-Michel Bay and the Dol marshes. Archaeological digs have shown the existence of a Neolithic population on the site from the 5 th to the 3 rd century BC. Finds include a vast entrance and thousands of pieces of stone and ceramic. In the surrounding marshes, the finds are in outstanding condition as a result of the peat. Pathways made of boards and branches, plant elements, seeds and domestic objects have been unearthed. The nature of the ground means that there is a good chance of other important finds being made, particularly in the field of anthropology. Opens on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 8am-12 noon / 1.30-5.30pm; Fridays 8am-12 noon. Free entry

Tides The gravitational attraction of the sun and the moon can interact to combine or to counter each other. When these two bodies are in line with the Earth, their respective attractions combine to give stronger tides, called spring tides, for the new moon and the full moon. When the sun and the moon are at right-angles around the Earth, their respective attractions defeat each other. This results in weak tides called neap tides, at the 1 st and last quarter of the moon. During the strongest tides, there is a difference of nearly 15m amplitude between high and low tide. This is the height of a 5-storey building! In 2009, experience the strongest tides, known as Equinox tides (March and September): 13 th January . . . . . . . . . coefficient 103 11 th February . . . . . . . . . coefficient 108 12 th March . . . . . . . . . . coefficient 107 24 th July . . . . . . . . . . . coefficient 106 22 nd August . . . . . . . . . coefficient 111 19 th , 20 th September . . . . . coefficient 109 18 th October . . . . . . . . . coefficient 100 Don’t miss this impressive spectacle: Get the tidal calendar in the Emerald Coast Tourist Offices!
