BOOK CLUB Wilbur Smith: War Crime The saga of the legendary Courtney family continues in this fourteenth instalment in Wilbur Smith’s best-selling series—the sequel to 2009’s Assegai—a thrilling tale of espionage, adventure, and danger, set in Africa and spanning from the Great War’s end to the dark days of World War II.

SEASIDE BABY PHOTO COMPETITION

As a member of the remarkable Courtney family, Leon Courtney knows how quickly fortunes can be won and lost. Over the course of more than two centuries, generations of his family have risen and fallen with the tides of history. Leon, too, has experienced his own share of triumph and pain. In the wake of his beloved wife’s death, the renowned big-game hunter is raising his young daughter, Saffron, alone in colonial Kenya.

Moms and Dads can have their baby’s photo taken Fri, Sat & Sun 4 – 30 April in Centre Court. Entries Cost R130 per baby, newborn to three years. Fee includes photo shoot, digital copy, A4 photo print and entry into the photo competition. Stand a chance to win one of three R5,000 start-up education policies, baby hampers, vouchers and family photo shoots.

Trevor Noah: Born a Crime It feels as if the year only just began, yet we find ourselves a quarter of the way through already… What with back-to-school, and Valentine’s day, before we know it we’re preparing for Autumn and Easter and all the festivities that this time of year brings. As the Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said, "The only constant is change." Autumn, is yet another signal of this change, as the days grow shorter, the evenings cooler, and the tinge of orange and yellow on the leaves, reminds us that winter is on its way.

The compelling, inspiring, and comically sublime story of one man’s coming-of-age.

MOM & BABY EXPO The 2017 Mom and Baby Expo will be held in Centre Court 25 April – 7 May, exhibiting all things mom, baby and toddler related.

At Waterfall Mall, this time of year also reminds us that the Easter Holidays are upon us, and signify a busy season of celebration. The highlight of this holiday however will be our Seaside Baby Photo Competition and Seaside themed holiday programme hosted in our centre court.

We’ve put a lot of time into scouring the catwalks around the world to bring you the newest trends for Autumn, and with this selection there is a little something to tickle everyone’s fancy, young or old. Keep an eye open for our Sorbet Date Night competition on page 2, and also the Le Creuset Easter give-away on page 5, and as always tons of fun for our little ones on page 8. Remember to follow us on Instagram (waterfall_mall), and on Facebook (facebook. com/waterfallmall.rustenburg) for sales and store specials, as well as personal shopper trends and sneak peaks into new stores.

But over the course of more than two decades, spies, traitors, and adventurers will dog their every step. As the fitful years of peace lead to the outbreak of the Second World War—involving Africa once more— Leon and Saffron must fight for their survival . . . and that of their illustrious family. Wilbur Smith masterfully captures the tensions that will spark a war across continents—and the uncertainty and hopes of a father and daughter caught in its grips—in this engrossing novel that delivers the fast-paced action and vivid history that have made him a living legend.

Born A Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man’s relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother—his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life.

Remember to HOP ON OVER to page 8 for tons of Kiddies ACTIVITIES & GAMES. ENT E R

We will also be hosting a spectacular Mom & Baby Expo towards the end of April, and invite all our shoppers to come and experience everything that Waterfall Mall has to offer you, all under one roof. Also, see our pick for top product on page 6, where we give advice on everything from cots and strollers, to car seats and clothing.

Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa’s tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.

In the 1920s, the continent of Africa is a dangerous place. As Leon attempts to navigate the murky political waters of this most exquisitely beautiful and wildest of lands, his daughter grows into an independent and headstrong young woman bound for a far different life in Britain, as a student at Oxford.

D WI N ! AN

The stories collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting. Whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother’s unconventional, unconditional love.

BEST EVER DATE NIGHT OUTFIT

It's all about THE LOOK Below: Layered necklaces, Lovisa

Why would you strip it down so much though? Well, the answer is simple. An uncomplicated, chic ensemble says, “I don’t try to hard”, and will allow your date to notice you before your clothes. Obviously this isn’t a casual-Friday look though, and you can substitute your t-shirt for a slinky camisole or smart blouse, and of course you’ll want to add a sexy pair of heels and some elegant jewellery, topped off by a sophisticated jacket or coat, especially as the air cools while we go into Autumn. Grab a chic clutch bag, and you're ready to go.

Left to right: Authentic Skinny, Country Road at Woolworths; Dark Blue Skinny, Guess; Straight Slim Leg, Diesel Emporium; Levi's 711 Black Skinny, Edgars. Left: Structured white blouse, Old Khaki/Cape Union Mart; Below: White Hammered Satin Shirt, Miladys.

Most importantly though, you want to be comfortable, and the latest body-con mini, or structured dress, may have you fidgeting with your clothes the whole night rather than being poised and sassy.

For the lady who want to vamp just a little bit, go for a deep red shade. For those of you who prefer a more neutral look, try a light pink or a classic French manicure. Above all, choose a colour you like because everyone is more beautiful when they feel totally comfortable!

Clockwise from left: Samara Heels, Witchery at Woolworths; Gold Strappy Stiletto, Solo Shoes; Prima Cut-out Heel, Shoe City.

Let’s face it, you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she takes care of their hands… and just in case the person you're going on a date with feels an overwhelming desire to hold your hands, you want them to look their absolute best because, let's face it, first impressions are crucial in the dating world.

What would a fashion stylist, or Vogue Magazine fashion editor wear on a first date? Experts agree that first-date fashion should be all about simplicity, nothing more than a back-to-basics jeans and t-shirt combo… dressed up just a little bit.

The same applies to your date night make up. Make sure that your own natural beauty radiates, rather than hiding it under multiple layers of unnecessary cover. Experiment with nudes and natural shades of eye shadow (trend alert) that enhance rather than hide your eyes, and take it easy on the contouring, and use just the lightest touch of blush, so that your own natural glow is still visible. When it comes to mascara though, find a maximising formula that will make your eyes pop, and don't be scared to experiment with a sultry red lip.

Intimate dinners are the cornerstone of romance. But what unsuspecting daters don’t realise is that these meals are also the make or break moment in a relationship. Take a look at our suggestions for successful dating.

you have a serious case of order envy, ask first. Do suggest sharing dishes. This is a great way to bond. Don’t talk about unpalatable topics like your latest root canal or the grossest thing you’ve seen lately. This can be off-putting. Do talk about things you are passionate about, and a little bit about yourself. Don’t forget to eat. Men particularly hate it when women chase their food around a plate or just order a salad. There is nothing lonelier than going out to dine with someone and eating solo. Don’t be rude to wait staff. Do be courteous to the staff and your date so you can be seen as a considerate person. Don’t take out your smart phone at dinner, whether you want to Instagram your meal, or check your messages. It’s just plain rude. Maybe save it for a selfie after the date. Don’t forget basic table manners, and try and

avoid scraping your knife and fork around the plate. Do dine with a little flirtation and finesse. 8. Don’t turn the date into a job interview. Try and find mutual subjects that you are both interested in. Do let the conversation flow, be in the moment and give your feelings time to marinate. 9. Don’t drink too much wine or cocktails. Do sip your drink, or avoid alcoholic beverages completely. 10. Don’t refuse dessert. A guy will generally only suggest dessert if the date is going well, so women should try at least a smidgen. In the same vein, if you really like her, suggest sharing a sweet something. Do recommend sharing a dessert you both enjoy and perhaps even pair the wine. Dessert is the most sensuous part of the meal and symbolic of sharing sweeter moments.

1. Cot: It goes without saying; your baby will need somewhere to sleep, and while bassinets and carry-cots are excellent choices for newborns, as your baby grows, so will its needs. Look for a cot with adjustable heights for your baby’s different stages of life. 2. Rocker/Bouncer: While this type of baby soother isn't an absolute necessity, in limited stretches, it can give you a much-needed break from holding your newborn and often has a wonderful way of quieting even the fussiest infants. 3. Car seat: When buying for a baby, put this item at the top of your list; many hospitals won’t let you take your newborn home without one. Also, if you are investing in an expensive travel system, (e.g. Isofix system) make sure it is compatible with your vehicle before you buy. Not all travel systems are created equal. 4. Pram: With a baby, your wheels are your freedom, which means a pram is a total must-have. Take a few for a test-drive around the store before buying (and make sure it’s easy to open, close, and fold up. 5. Camp cot: If you take frequent trips, you may want to invest in one of these (hotels often have them on hand, but their age, cleanliness, and safety can vary widely). Look for one that folds easily (yet locks securely when it’s set up) and isn’t too heavy.

Angel Care Sound and movement monitor, and Angel Care Video monitor available from Baby Boom.

CUTEST CLOTHING

Baby monitor: Unless you want to spend every minute peering into your baby’s cot, you’ll want a monitor to keep tabs from another room. Believe it or not, even if you live in a small space, it’s nice to have a monitor so that you can close the door to the baby’s room and still hear what’s going on inside the nursery. Audio models only transmit sound; video models also relay a live image of your baby.
