HISTORY The lively maritime district of Barcelona was once a barrier island called Maians, which over the centuries became a peninsula: Barceloneta.

Artists, fishermen, travellers, bar flies, and local merchants have built a community here that combines a laid-back Mediterranean beach culture with the cosmopolitan style of one of Europe’s most dynamic cities. From this colourful setting comes Maians, a thoroughly unique line of plimsolls that fulfills the Spanish requisite of casual yet chic.

THE FACTORY
Our local "zapatilleros" marshal generations of skill and know-how to handcraft our products. Created by one of Barcelona´s most consummate designers, Alfonso de la Fuente Rey, each pair of Maians is handmade locally using regional material and vulcanised rubber: a painstaking process that results in a unique brand of footwear that is dashing, durable, and incomparably comfortable.

We build on the tradition of Spanish vulcanised shoemaking. The style names commemorate those individuals who have been part of this tradition over the generations; Tirso, Amador, Eugenio, Pepa. All characters a part of the Maians history.

Every pair is carefully hand sewn by our experienced “zapatilleros�. Special care is taken with every detail of the manufacturing process.

FINISHING AND MATERIALS

Detailed craftsmanship meets urban street style: this is the Maians formula, and it’s what characterises each deftly assembled pair of our unabashedly good-looking shoes. The materials from which Maians are produced are all sourced regionally and include cottons, linens, suedes, and leathers. Our rubber soles are also environmentally friendly and have a unique fruity scent.

Our materials are 100% produced locally, making this a unique value of Maians. Throughout the whole production process we try to be as eco-friendly as possible in every step.
We believe that the details are the backbone of a finely finished product.

INSPIRATION The Barceloneta is a neighbourhood full of life. It is the birthplace of Maians and an endless source of inspiration. Look up and you see balconies full of hanging laundry, bicycles beside gas bottles, birds in cages and potted plants, brooms and stepladders… Everywhere you look there are contrasts: flaking paint beside shiny new buildings, tall clothes lines, graffiti and well kept façades, the old living comfortably beside the new. 8
This season’s collection stems from the neighbourhood itself; a veritable melting pot of contrasts, colours, textures, smells and sounds. These contrasts are reflected in the materials, trimmings and laces of the shoes. Just like the pristine new buildings side by side with run down houses, this season’s Maians is full of contrasts. The colour tone of the collection also reflects the Barceloneta buildings; beige with khaki, grey and brown, as well as flashes of teak, indigo, mustard and blue.

The balconies of the Barceloneta are the perfect place to leave your newly washed Maians out to dry in the sun, where your neighbours can also appreciate the trademark sweet smell of the Maians soles . Although they won’t know the benefits of the natural rubber soles until they try them. They are easy on the foot and breathe easily, you won’t want to take them off all summer!

DISPLAY This season we introduce you to our new display, a small playful stage honouring two of the most memorable details of our collection: an easy going attitude and an unforgettable scent.

We want to show in this piece the washable attribute of the shoe, as well as illustrate a little scene from the everyday life of Barceloneta.
