HISTORY The lively maritime district of Barcelona was once a barrier island called Maians, which over the centuries became a peninsula: Barceloneta.

Artists, fishermen, travellers, bar flies and local merchants have built a community here that combines a laid-back Mediterranean beach culture with the cosmopolitan style of one of Europe’s most dynamic cities. From this colourful setting comes Maians, a thoroughly unique line of plimsolls that fulfills the Spanish requisite of casual yet chic.
THE FACTORY
Our local “zapatilleros� marshal generations of skill and know-how to handcraft our products. Our entire range is handmade using vulcanisation, a process where the upper part of the shoe is fused together with the sole by heating natural rubber pellets. Each shoe is handmade one by one in an artisanal manner, making each pair one-of-a-kind.

THE "SOLE" OF MAIANS

Our classic sole unit was developed in 1984 and inspired by classic espadrille natural fiber foxing. The style is casual and Mediterranean and is the most representative sole of the Maians collection. The braided rope motif on the sole unit represents esparto, a tough, wiry Mediterranean grass used in making rope, a defining characteristic of traditional Spanish footwear.

With a more formal look, this sole was launched in 1979 and was meant to simulate the stitching on the upper portion of the sole and a base unit made of cork. This type of construction was widely used in Spain in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

2500 This new addition to the Maians line also has its roots in the early 1980’s. Like all of our sole units, it is not a reproduction but it is the original, recycled mould. The thicker sole means that this style is better suited for colder and wetter climates.

NEW AURELIA MODEL
Detailed craftsmanship meets urban street style: this is the Maians formula, and it’s what characterises each deftly assembled pair of our unabashedly good-looking shoes. The materials from which Maians are produced are all sourced regionally and include cottons, linens, suedes, and leathers. Our rubber soles are also environmentally friendly and have a unique fruity scent.

MARCIAL Marcial is a new style for this season. A classic mix between our Sisto shoe and our Domingo boot, we have created this new mid cut shoe. The construction for this model is a unique blend between a desert boot and an Oxford shoe. This style with its new 2500 sole unit has been designed with cold, wet winter weather in mind for a more substantial fall winter line. 10
INSPIRATION Maians is unique in that every step of the production process takes place on Spanish soil. The Catalan textile industry first achieved prominence between 1283 and 1313 and it was the region's premier industry. Barcelona, Sabadell, and Terrassa were leading textile centers. We have sought out some of the remaining textile producers in this area and acquired top quality, natural textiles for our collections. These materials were used to produce high-end fashion garments, such as men's suits. This means that these styles are one of a kind and give each collection a unique aspect that reflects the great manufacturing tradition of Catalunya. We have taken special note of this quality and have recovered these materials to make a signature Maians product.
