I'm so excited to have such a beautiful showcase of New Zealand and Australian weddings in this issue. Aside from two features, they have all taken place downunder. It's been great to see not only all the home-grown talent, but also the number of international photographers travelling here, capturing our stunning landscapes and falling in love with the natural beauty our country has to offer. This issue sees some gorgeous New Zealand weddings in the Hawkes Bay and at the wonderful Old Forest School in the Bay of Plenty, as well as the most stunning of editorials amongst the spectacular scenery of the Central Plateau. From Australia we have a beautiful rainy day wedding in the Victorian bush, an elegant affair at the exquisite Deux Belettes and of course the spectacular cover shoot from Byron Loves Fawn and Victoria Cameron. This past summer I had the privilege of coordinating a shoot with award winning photographer Jen Huang when she came to town for a couple of days. With only a week's notice we pulled together an amazing team and spent a lovely day out at Simunovich Olive Estate, where Jen quickly learnt the true meaning of Auckland's 'four seasons in one day'! From a seemingly sunny sky, we got an aggressive downpour that saw us scrambling to protect camera equipment, models, dresses, and cakes - and not necessarily in that order! Speaking of Jen, I'm very excited to be working in collaboration with her on the first Magnolia Rouge hosted workshop, which will be held in Queenstown next March. A meeting of creative minds in the one space is bound to be an inspiring few days to remember. If you haven't visited downunder before I hope you enjoy all of the loveliness showcased in this issue!

After meeting in their local town of Waihi Beach one summer, this super stylish couple envisioned their wedding as a very fun and casual get together in a barn with all their nearest and dearest. Finding said barn was their first challenge. Luckily for them, after doing an online search and finding Old Forest School, they had found the perfect solution. Being a creative couple, they relished the planning and design aspect of their wedding, and together with the help of friends they made several things from scratch including the beautiful organic bouquets, which were an abundance of greenery and white wildflowers.

27

28

Jade's stunning two piece gown from Australian designer Karla Spetic made a stylish statement of its own and was one of the easiest aspects of the planning process for the bride; she made her mind up within minutes of trying it on.

30

With the groom coming from a very musical family it was only natural that it play a big part in their celebrations. His sister sang their engagement song as the bride walked down the aisle, and whilst they signed the register his dad played music. The remainder of the afternoon's entertainment came courtesey of some talented local buskers who played into the evening.

When Adele and David locked eyes across the church pews, this devoutly religious couple immediately knew they wanted to get to know each other better. Both serious about finding a lifelong partner with marriage the ultimate goal, the Auckland-based Korean couple sought spiritual guidance to ensure they not only had the chemistry, but shared life goals and views to last the distance. Following a six month courtship, with their confidence in their mutual philosophies on religion and a shared future solidified, the pair wasted no time in getting married. So eager were they to tie the knot, they decided on an intimate registry affair and spent the next year planning the wedding of their dreams. “We were in love. We knew that we were right for each other and didn’t want to waste another moment apart.

48

51

52

As an event planner, Adele had a clear vision of what she wanted and how to bring all her ideas together. “I started by creating idea boards for each element of my wedding, e.g., the wedding table, the cake, reception décor, hair, make-up, flowers, and dress, etc. Then from these idea boards I contacted vendors and visited different locations. I love organising events but it was so much more fun organising my own! I have a keen eye for detail and aspire to perfection. My make-up artist said she’d finally met someone who makes her obsessive compulsive-like attention to detail look normal!” Adele laughs, but agrees that this focus on perfection is a helpful trait when it comes to planning events.

54

The tiniest details, from the typography on the invitations - which were designed by Adele and realised by a graphic designer - to the handcrafted clay ornaments, which served as place settings for their guests, added the deeply personal touch that ultimately makes each wedding as unique as the couple themselves. All of Adele’s meticulous planning and attention to these finer details were expertly captured by Erich McVey. A huge admirer of his work, who subsequently forged an instant affection for him and his “adorable wife”, Adele knew he was just the photographer to capture her “soft and dreamy” fairy tale wedding aesthetic.

When all is said and done though, it is the people at the centre of this special celebration of two families coming together, who are the ones to make a lasting imprint on the memory. “Holding David’s hands at the altar... my voice trembling, reading our vows, only David understanding my whispered words, seemed to make it even more special. In that moment there was just him and I.

57

"FROM THE GORGEOUS ROLLING HILLS PACKED WITH FLUFFY WHITE SHEEP TO THE SPECTACULAR MOUNTAINS FIT FOR THE MOVIE SCREEN, THE NEW ZEALAND LIGHT AND SCENERY MIGHT BE THE VERY BEST I'VE HAD THE PRIVILEGE TO PHOTOGRAPH." Erich McVey, photographer “The enormity of the occasion only really sunk in when my sister sang our wedding song during the reception. It felt so surreal at the time, but only then was I able to really breathe and take it all in. Many of our guests cried happy tears ... and other people in the restaurant all stopped and started clapping. It was magic! That, and the time spent with our guests - some who flew many hours - to celebrate with us, is what I will remember and cherish most from our special day.”

"Fairy tales come true" is how this gorgeous bride describes her day. As teenagers, Farris tried to set Charles up with her girlfriend who had a crush on him, but quickly realised that she herself was more interested. When it came to their engagement several years later, Charles had to work hard to surprise her, and indeed his thoughtful plan did the trick. Despite being involved in event planning herself, Farris hadn't give her own wedding a whole lot of consideration. She knew that she wanted both herself and her groom to be well represented so bearing this in mind they went with a rustic theme so they could cater for both masculine and feminine touches. They incorporated a lot of creative and musical elements, including hiring a flash mob choir which surprised all the guests as the bridal party entered the church.

72

75

"I sourced and made many of the styling components from the final invites to the rustic wooden chandeliers, spending long nights with my husband and bridesmaids organising, creating and tweaking DIY elements. I had so many comments on how people loved the touch of 'Charis' it put on our wedding - something money can't buy!"

76

77

The flowers

"Our flowers were beyond words. Naomi from Leaf & Honey was absolutely incredible. They were loose, rambling rustic bunches that looked effortless. Each table at the reception had a completely different arrangement but still gave us the cohesive look that we wanted. Both bouquets and boutonnieres were absolute pieces of art. On top of that my floral head piece was my favourite detail of the day. Hand made with fresh flowers Naomi designed a custom piece that could be worn with my hair up for the ceremony and then down for the reception."

We chat to Tania, owner of Percy Handmade about her newly released 2014 collection. Tell us about how Percy Handmade came to be?

world through new creative eyes.

I’ve been running Percy Handmade for over five years and it’s been a wonderful journey of hard work, overcoming obstacles and self-discovery. As a child, I watched my mother sew at the dining room table and I was mesmerized by her ability to transform a simple piece of fabric into something beautiful. Whilst I didn’t have any technical skills, equipment or experience in sewing, I decided five years ago that I wanted to learn. My sewing machine, Percy, was a gift from my husband. Percy changed my world and taught me how to see the

Where did your inspiration come from for this collection? The new collection, “Forevermore” is inspired by the perfections of nature and the seasons of life. The collection features delicate and fanciful pieces inspired by those moments you feel the rays of sun on your skin, the cool breeze against your face and the moments of child-like awe you feel when you see a flower bud slowly blossom. I wish for my pieces to bring brides back to those special moments, especially those magical moments on their wedding day.

83

"I am entirely self-taught and I’m inspired by beauty and its limitless possibilities. I love to design wedding accessories because they are expressive, considered and personal. I fell in love with the possibilities that came from teaching myself how to sew and it has become the foundation of my business. I love to offer these possibilities to my brides through my bespoke accessories."

What's your favourite aspect of running Percy Handmade? Every day I get to work and learn with my hands, my heart and my mind. Sometimes I don’t want the day to end because I love what I do so much, but I wake up every morning knowing that the day ahead is something I’ve chosen and that gives me energy.

Who would be your dream client to design for? Without a doubt, Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge. She is graceful, intelligent, authentic and appreciates timeless detailing – whether it’s from the high street or straight off the catwalk.

What plans do you have for Percy Handmade? This has been an exciting growth period and I am embracing the new opportunities and the new sources of inspiration they're opening up. In the future, I would love to take Percy Handmade offline by opening a boutique and showroom, where brides can play dress ups, drink champagne and experience a magical and personal insight into the design and construction process. I believe the process of handmade is just as beautiful as the finished product.

Cally had always wanted to elope. However, guilt got the better of her once she started planning her wedding to Paul, and she knew that they couldn't leave their families out of the celebrations. Having been travelling through Europe at the time of their proposal, the couple were inspired by the rustic country vistas they had seen. Once back in Australia, much to their delight a search uncovered Deux Belettes. After their initial visit had Cally feeling like she'd escaped to the French countryside, they knew they had found their perfect venue. Holding both the ceremony and reception in the one spot meant their guests could truly relax for the afternoon. To keep them entertained, the couple arranged a trivia contest, in which everyone eagerly participated whilst the couple were off having their photos taken.

THE FLOWERS "I love peonies so we worked around having them in the bouquets and centrepieces. They were stunning on the day. Our florist mixed pinks, purples, reds and peach in bright and pastel hues. It was a very romantic and beautiful assortment of fresh spring blooms." FAVOURITE DETAIL "I have so many. I loved the styling of the reception marquee. The way the furniture and flowers and table settings all came together. It was more amazing than we had ever hoped. Paul says he really appreciated the butcher’s aprons and carving knives when the roast came out – it was a nice touch, and the guests loved it. Also the cake was delicious. We had sampled small portions beforehand and needed a gluten free layer for some guests. We ended up making that layer the largest - chocolate hazelnut mud, seriously droolworthy. We have kept some frozen for our one year anniversary."

Despite Mother Nature .... Lauren and Peter managed to achieve their vision of their wedding embracing the outdoors, in a remote and incredibly picturesque location. It was love at first sight when they first laid eyes on Saladin Lodge in Narbethong, Victoria. The drive up to the lodge though gorgeous ferns and trees rebirthing from recent bush fires was instantly calming and relaxing. They were able to hold the ceremony amongst the trees overlooking the wide open green spaces and the lake. With the help of a full Pinterest board and their florist, the couple were able to style the lodge just as they had imagined, filling it with candles, fairy lights and sweet rustic details. They brought the outdoors inside by filling spaces with an assortment of flowers which created a beautiful ambience.

114

"My brief for the wedding flowers was unstructured, lots of green, twigs and white textured flowers with nothing too matched. I really wanted to make sure that the flowers mirrored and complemented the backdrop of Saladin Lodge. I was so happy with what Lauren from Poppy Culture created, it set the scene and complemented the backdrop perfectly, it really amplified the aura of the venue and brought the outdoors in for our garden affair. I didn't want my bouquet to be too structured and wanted greenery predominately - when I saw it, I started crying, it was just perfect, more than I had imagined it would ever be! They were the first of many tears shed for the day. It had lots of greenery, gum leaves, nuts and creamy peach peonies and tied up with string. My bridesmaids wore matching corsages."

117

"Having my Dad walk me down the aisle to Peter, who was beaming and getting teary down at the end. Sharing and hearing each other speak our vows that we had written together, with the ambience of quiet nature and the beautiful backdrop, whilst our guests huddled under the market umbrellas to shelter from the drizzly rain."

"Waiting 20 minutes in the car for the rain to pass, so we could have our wedding ceremony out amongst the trees is one of my favourite moments. Peter’s best man Michael came down to me at the car, and the bridesmaids were huddled under the car boot with umbrellas. I remember Michael saying, "Lauren can you wait 20 minutes, you’re getting married outside." They was just the words I wanted to hear, we hadn't come all this way to get married inside! The groomsman carried the big market umbrellas down to the ceremony spot so the guests could keep dry. The rain started shortly after the ceremony and set in for the rest of the evening!"

The Hawkes Bay region is special to both Sarah and Vinnie's familes. "Black Barn was an easy decision; the food and wine is superb, and the staff made everything so easy. We felt so blessed to be surrounded by such warmth and the natural beauty of the area helped create a beautiful ambience for our guests. The relaxed nature of the day all stemmed from the venue". The look came about once the bride had chosen her Rue de Seine dress, which she knew was 'the one' as soon as she tried it on. At that stage she could picture the rest of the day clearly, taking inspiration from the whimsy and romance of the dress.

129

"The flowers on the bridal table were breathtaking. Our flowers were perfect in every way." They had bouquets filled with white peonies, jasmine, lisianthus, and roses, all enveloped in beautiful greenery. The ceremony featured an all white palette making for a serene picture and to mix things up for the evening they used the same varieties, but incorporated an explosion of white, red, and bright pinks to reflect their excitement.

131

"My mother was adamant I follow tradition and have with me something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. On the morning of the wedding, I had everything but my 'something blue'. At the last minute, my grandmother sewed me a blue bow, which I carried with me on the day, and have done every day since."

"Our ‘first look’ outside beautiful Rush Cottage – we were both so excited to see one another. It made us feel so much more relaxed."

This styled shoot is abundant in ornate details, soft touches paired with bold jewel tones and lush, textured florals. All inspired with an old world feel set in the midst of European gardens. The starting point was a beautiful tablescape complete with raw materials such as wood, muslin and terracotta accents. Incorporated into this were family style foods, cheeses, and wine. All design elements such as the cake setup are in unison with the terrain of the rugged landscape. Extraordinary details also include beautiful hand-made invitations, a wood cheeseboard scripted menu and of course how can you miss Mimi, the sweetest little donkey!

With its commanding view of the Pacific Ocean, The Valley Club of Montecito provided the perfect venue for Leslie and AJ to get married, since they wanted to be outdoors and hold it in their hometown of Santa Barbara. They wanted their wedding to blend California cool - fresh, clean and classic - with a modern and glamorous look. The ceremony was set up on a beautiful expanse of green lawn facing out towards the ocean, with large stone pedestal urns overflowing with white blooms at both the start and finish of the aisle. A jazz trio playing in the background provided the perfect ambience on the warm summer's day.

145

"I chose flowers I love, which were in season and stayed within my color scheme. The flowers used were white garden roses, succulents, gardenias, and a few white peonies."

Following the ceremony, the cocktail reception was held on the expansive terrace of the clubhouse, once again making the most of the ocean vista on display. The traditional country club style of the venue was transformed using a 'spa green and white' colour palette. Custom, elegant window dressings accented with pearls and crystals were designed to cover the existing ones. An assortment of different table shapes and sizes were set with gold rimmed china and water glasses. Gold mercury candle holders and vessels filled with abundant displays of flowers were showcased on each table. Later in the evening the outdoor terrace was transformed to a night club with a white dance floor, translucent glass cocktail tables lit from within, white leather lounge seating, and a nine-piece band that had every one of the 180 guests on their feet and dancing under the stars and strings of piazza lights.

Leslie and her mom shopped for her dress together in Houston. Leslie thought she knew exactly what she wanted - long sleeves and lace - but quickly changed her mind when she found her glamorous and sexy, yet fresh and clean, beaded, sleeveless gown. Leslie looked absolutely stunning in the dress and it served to inspire the design of the entire wedding event.

After a romantic candlelit proposal on Auckland's Waiheke Island, Ria & Andrew envisioned old world Tuscan elegance surrounded by the lush, natural beauty of rolling hills and olive groves for their wedding day, and they set about creating this not far from the proposal spot. "We could see no place more beautiful and fitting to bring our family and friends to celebrate with us than Waiheke a year later." After a heartfelt ceremony overlooking the ocean, their reception played out as an intimate dinner party, where stories and laughter could be enjoyed and shared across the table. Olive leaf garlands delicately placed down the long dining tables emited a delicious scent into the air. Accented by old world brass, they served locally made breads, and marinated olives with crushed rosemary and olive oil to start. Hundreds of candles cast a golden glow, as a classical guitarist played gently throughout the evening. "To us, we love family, friends, great food, wine, and music and these few hours brought everything together in the one place for us".

"Our wedding day and the days that led up to it were so filled with the love and support of our family and friends, who made our celebration more than we could have ever imagined. Our hearts were so full. The evening before the wedding, our close family and friends joined us at the villa for a feast typical of Italian celebrations. As the sun began to set, Andrew and I felt so at peace watching our family and friends laughing, eating great food and soaking it all in."

" The day was a soulful love affair - warm, intimate and full of heart. "

"I waited at the top of the stairs of the villa for my brother to walk me down the aisle. As he appeared at the bottom of the stairs, he looked up at me and I saw his eyes fill with tears. I walked down and reached out for his arm. As we walked, our classical guitarist played sweetly, and the open fireplace at our ceremony cast an ambient golden glow across the warm faces of our family and friends. When my eyes met Andrew’s, my soul set alight. In that very moment, we were all where we were meant to be."

Situated on the spectacular Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia, the town of Anglesea is a special place for both Lisa and Andrew, as well as their families. Being the beach loving couple that they are, the Surf Life-saving Club was the ideal venue for their special day. They held the ceremony on top of a cliff along the famous stretch of road and with the perfect weather, it staged an incredible setting with a view. The sunset that followed provided an incredible backdrop to the party that followed. With the help of their families they pulled together most of the wedding details themselves, from the mixed herb seedlings that the groom's mother grew to give out to the guests, to a beautiful grazing table prepared by both mothers. After searching over ten stores and getting even more opinions, Lisa finally found the simple and elegant look she was after in her Gwendolynne designed gown – although it took bringing in her older brother for the final say with the reasoning that "boys know what other boys will like!" The use of succulents and native Australian foliage combined with a touch of yellow in a unstructured bouquet matched the relaxed nature and style of their wedding.

DANELLE BOHANE

I love all things wedding. I love the tears, the laughter, the spontaneity, the champagne bubbles, and the memories captured in each photograph. My approach is to be as unobtrusive as possible, seizing natural moments as they unfold on the day, and sneaking all those beautiful looks between people, when they aren’t aware the photo is being taken.

Hi I’m Danelle, a photographer based in New Zealand but love to travel. I am in love with natural light and I like to photograph in a storytelling kind of way that reflects the love of two. It is my aim to capture all the moments of love and joy that are shared throughout such a special day.
