Oh Boy! ... Jump for Joy! Steve David and the Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison crew (pictured winning at Madison last year) had plenty to celebrate in 2010 as the hometown hydro won on its home course as well as at two other race sites en route to a third straight National High Points championship. The team is now celebrating it’s 50th anniversary in Unlimited racing. This year’s cover of The Madison Courier Souvenir Section — the paper’s 46th annual — pictures every driver who has either driven the Miss Madison or a boat carrying her colors over the last half-century. ••• This souvenir section is written and edited by The Madison Courier Sports Department including sports editor Mark Campbell and writers David Campbell, Evan Shields, Sara Denhart, Elliot Tompkin and photographer Ken Ritchie.

Air National Guard to bring ‘Activation Zone,’ fly-overs By EVAN SHIELDS

T

Courier Staff Writer

he Madison Regatta will get a new look on the entertainment front this year with assistance from H1 Unlimited series sponsor Air National Guard The Air National Guard has partnered with H1 Unlimited for the six races in the United State portion of the 2011 season, starting with Madison. This is the Air National Guard’s first time partnering with H1, so it will also be the first time the group has come to the Regatta to provide entertainment. One of the biggest attractions during the Regatta will be the ANG’s activation zone, according to Capt. Rondal Perry, the division chief of marketing and recruiting resources for the Air National Guard. The activation zone will be an area where children can play, with activities such as a flight simulator. Perry said he was not sure exactly what would be in the activation zone, as the attractions will vary from city to city in each race. “It’s kind of a mix of everything,” he said.

Air shows will likely be going on while the boats are preparing for the next heat or in-between other dead time during the race. “They don’t want to hang out with nothing going on,” Perry said. Tony Steinhardt, a member of the Madison Regatta executive board, said the Air National Guard will have a flyover on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the races. There will also be concerts going throughout Friday and Saturday night on Vaughn Drive. The Air National Guard will also have a display boat for photo opportunities. Pictures are free and can be downloaded online. Gregg Mansfield, a public relations representative with H1 Unlimited, said there will be some inflatable playground equipment. There will also be several recruiters around the Regatta site to meet with fans and people who might be interested in joining the Air National Guard. All six races are going to be televised on Versus Network and streamed online at www.H1unlimited.com. The television market, Perry said, gives the Air National Guard a greater chance of being successful in its marketing program, which would mean a greater chance for the Air National Guard to return to the Regatta. “Certainly, if things turn out well, we’d be crazy not to (continue sponsoring),” Perry said.

Indie band Walk the Moon to headline Saturday music By SARA DENHART

A

Courier Entertainment Writer

s the headlining band takes the stage on Saturday night, the Madison Regatta crowd will not only be wearing their admission wristbands and buttons. They might also have on a little face paint when Cincinnati-based indie band Walk the Moon rocks the keytar and brings back all what is loved about the early sounds of The Killers. The band is the mastermind of Nick Petricca, the frontman of Walk the Moon, who started the band as a project while studying music composition and theory at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. Over the course of five years, the band has been through several shakeups in its lineup — originally all members were from Kenyon College but now Petricca is the only original member left. Since its college days, Walk the Moon has evolved and become serious about making life on the road and in the studio a real career choice. The band recorded a debut full length album “I Want! I Want!” in late 2009. They also signed with Mick Management, who represents national artists such as John Mayer, Ray LaMontagne and Sarah McLachlan. The band pinned down a final lineup of bassist Kevin Ray, a childhood friend of Petricca’s who had not talked to Petricca for more than a decade; drummer Sean Waugaman, who has known Ray since childhood and has been playing in bands with Ray since seventh grade; and guitarist Eli Maiman. Later, they recorded a video for their breakout single, “Anna Sun,” which was named after one of

Walk the Moon includes (from left): Kevin Ray, Sean Waugaman, Nicholas Petricca and Eli Maiman. Petricca’s professors at Kenyon. The group used Patrick Meier of Contrast Productions, who worked with Charlie Hustle on their music video. Meier gave the video a fun, vibrant and indie rock treatment where 70 volunteers showed up to be actors in the video. The video starts with Petricca — who later reveals his face paint — and travels through the Mockbee and French Park in Cincinnati. The Pones Inc., a non-profit performance art group in Cincinnati, perform a choreographed number during the music video as well. The video for “Anna Sun,” is now one of the videos being featured

at the retail clothing chain American Eagle. With all the important details in place, the buzz from industry insiders began to embrace the band. Music industry representatives were excited to see the band, currently unsigned, when Walk the Moon performed at this year’s South by Southwest Music Festival — a staple in Austin, Texas, for more than 20 years. They were featured as a spotlight artist on Last Call with Carson Daly during SXSW. Then, Walk the Moon was added to the Lollapalooza lineup — on the same stage where Cee-Lo and

Eminem will perform. They booked Bonnaroo and were named one of SPIN Magazine’s “25 Must-Hear Artists” at the festival. Esquire Magazine loved Walk the Moon’s song, “Anna Sun,” so much they named it one of their “30 Summer Songs Every Man Should Listen To.” The band also opened for Weezer in Atlantic City just a month ago. This summer, Walk the Moon will also perform with Panic! at the Disco and Neon Trees on the U.S. Cellular Stage just before coming to the Madison Regatta. The sounds of Walk the Moon

are reminiscent of The Killers’ first album, “Hot Fuss”; all the other indie-sounding artists who broke out into mainstream thereafter in 2004: Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse; and then there’s a splash of The Strokes in the mix of Walk the Moon’s music. With what’s on the music scene today, one could lump Walk the Moon into the grouping of Local Natives, Arcade Fire, Grouplove, Fleet Foxes and Vampire Weekend. Petricca lists the Talking Heads and The Police as other strong influences. In fact, the name of the band was taken from The Police song, “Walking on the Moon.” They also do a rendition of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” to pay homage to 1980s artists who inspired them. All of Walk the Moon’s music culminates and thrives on its childhood and young, free-spirit energy that the members, all in their 20s, embody. The band’s breakout song, “Anna Sun,” is just all about growing up and life in college. Most of the band’s music relates to growing up and just having fun. After several attempts, Walk the Moon could not be reached for comment. Walk the Moon’s infectious beats and even catchier tunes make them the perfect summertime headliner for the Madison Regatta music program on Saturday, July 2, at Bicentennial Park. Also playing on the Bicentennial Park stage on Saturday will be Madison native Andrea Davidson, The Broken Spurs, the iLLusion, 812, Down For Peace and this year’s Battle of the Bands winner. The shows will be highlighted by the fireworks show that starts just after Walk the Moon’s set.

The 2010 Lucas Oil Indiana Governor’s Cup was just one race, but several events that happened in Madison — and the next weekend in Detroit — ended up influencing the entire season. The biggest may have been the engine fire on the U-96 Spirit of Qatar at the beginning of the third heat (photo above). Driver Dave Villwock was forced to take zero points in the heat and had to start the final as the trailer boat which allowed the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison (right) — which ran flawless all race and all season — to waltz to the victory. Villwock and the Qatar never made up the point difference and the Oberto won its third-straight National High Points Championship. Ed Cooper brought his U-3 Go3Racing piston-packer to the season opener, but pulled out of the pits in protest after one day. The “Big Red Turbinator” hasn’t been on the circuit since and is expected to remain on the sidelines in 2011. The U-37 Miss Peters & May and driver J.W. Myers (far left, top) made a successful season debut at Madison and placed third. But a week later, the boat was destroyed and Myers injured in a crash into the seawall at Detroit after losing a skidfin. Just a year earlier, driver Jean Theoret nearly died in an accident aboard the same boat in Madison. Now Myers and former U-37 crew chief Scott Raney (also pictured) have formed their own team with sponsorship from Peters & May and will race this season as the U-11. With Myers sidelined, the Peters & May went to a backup hull and picked up U-25 driver John Zimmerman, forcing U-25 owner Dr. Ken Muscatel (far left, bottom) off the sidelines and back into the cockpit of that boat for the rest of the season. His nine wins are the most by any Miss M driver and he is just the 16th driver in history with at least 10 wins. With David and sponsor Oh Boy! Oberto, the Miss Madison has enjoyed its greatest success in recent seasons. David has won five of the past six driver’s championships and the team itself has won the last three national championships.

Driver Name: Scott Liddycoat, Suffolk, Va. (0 wins) Victories at Madison: 0 2010 High Point Finish: Did Not Compete 2010 Wins: Did Not Compete Team Name: Ted Porter, Decatur, Ind. While he is a rookie on the Unlimited level, Liddycoat is no stranger to boat racing having spent 19 years in the sport. Liddycoat racked up an impressive 2010 campaign in the 5-Litre class, the traditional proving ground for Unlimited pilots. He won both the Alton Pierson Memorial Trophy and the Eddie Cannon Memorial Trophy for Best Overall 5-Litre as well as the National High Points Championship at the 2.5-Litre class. Underneath Liddycoat is one of the best Unlimited hydroplanes ever built. The fifth turbine hull built by the Miss Budweiser team, the 1997-vintage boat has 22 career wins and has won nine national championships yet has never won at Madison.

U-5 GRAHAM TRUCKING Driver Name: Jeff Bernard, Kent, Wash. (3 wins) Victories at Madison: 1 (2008) 2010 High Point Finish: 4th (5,574) 2010 Wins: None Team Name: Ted Porter, Decatur, Ind. (3 wins) Built: 1997 (22 wins) BERNARD Victories at Madison: 1 (2008) 2010 High Point Finish: 4th (5,574) 2010 Wins: None ——— Not yet 27 years old, Jeff Bernard has already won three races at the Unlimited level and has emerged as one of the top guns in the sport. He finished fifth in his first race in 2005 and has nine podium finishes. His first win came here at Madison in 2008. Bernard’s boat is the sixth, and last, turbine built by the Miss Budweiser Racing Team. The vaunted “T-6” has only nine wins to its credit, but currently owns the world straightaway speed record. Ted Porter sponsored an Unlimited in 2005 but decided to start his own team the next year. The only owner on the circuit currently running three full-time teams, Porter was rewarded with five wins and 12 podium finishes.

U-11 MISS PETERS & MAY Driver Name: J.W. Myers, Burien, Wash. (1 win) Victories at Madison: 1 (2005) 2010 High Point Finish: 9th (2,325 pts) 2010 Wins: 0 Team Name: Unlimited Racing Group, Edmonds, Wash. (0 wins) Homeport: Edmonds, Wash. Team Manager: Shannon Raney, Seattle, Wash. (0 wins) MYERS Crew Chief: Scott Raney, Seattle, Wash. (7 wins) Built: 2000 (1 win) Victories at Madison: 0 2010 High Point Finish: Did Not Compete 2010 Wins: Did Not Compete ——— Veteran J.W. Myers saw his 2010 season cut short when he was injured in a horrific crash at Detroit last season when the skid fin on the boat he was driving, the U-37 Miss Peters & May, failed and sent him into the seawall. While with the U-37 Shumacher Racing Team in 2010, Myers teamed with crew chief Scott Raney. When the entire crew was let go after the season, Myers and Raney purchased the former U-25 Superior Racing hull from owner Ken Muscatel and along with Raney’s wife Shannon, formed the U-11 Unlimited Racing Group.

The team’s current boat is one of the last that was built by Fred Leland and ran under the Miss Pico and Znetix banners in the early 2000s. In 2001, Terry Troxell won his first-ever race aboard the boat, at Tri-Cities.

U-17 MISS RED DOT Driver Name: Kip Brown, Issaquah, Wash. (0 wins) Victories at Madison: None 2010 High Point Finish: 13th (1,270 pts) 2010 Wins: None Team Name: Our Gang Racing, LLC, Preston, Wash. (0 wins) Built: 2006 (0 wins) Victories at Madison: None 2010 High Point Finish: 7th (3,183 pts) 2010 Wins: None ——— Kip Brown shared driving duties with his uncle Nate Brown during the 2010 season but is expected to get a lion-share of the seat time this season. The younger Brown had an inauspicious start to the season at Madison last year. He was running away with his first career heat win when the propeller blew, ending his day. He still is seeking that first win. Former Miss Madison pilot Nate Brown started his own Unlimited team in 2006. Last year, it was with Nate driving that the U-17 made its only two final heats, including a season-high fourth at Tri-Cities. The team finished seventh in the National High Points standings.

(0 wins) Built: 2007 (0 wins) PERKINS Victories at Madison: None 2010 High Point Finish: 5th (4,894 pts) 2010 Wins: None ——— One of the up-and-coming drivers in the circuit, Brian Perkins made five of the sixth final heats last season and picked up his first career podium finish with a third at Madison. He finished fifth in the National High Point Standings, one year after placing sixth. The Washington State-based Go Fast, Turn Left Race Team has progressed in leaps and bounds since its inception in 2007. The current U-21 was designed in 2007 by Dale Vanwieringen is the sister ship of the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison. The boat spent its first year with U-21 Freedom Racing before that team ceased operations.

Despite being a star t-up team with little funding, the group has finished in the top 10 national standings each of its first two seasons. After running the former piston-powered hull that was purchased from Ed Cooper Jr. for two seasons, the team upgraded this year when it purchased the Oh Boy! Oberto/ Miss Madison back-up hull in early May. The boat, which was built in 1988, recorded three wins while it was campaigned by the Miss Madison team. Driver Steve David steered the hull to drivers championships in 2005 and 2006.

Driver Name: Ken Muscatel, Seattle, Wash. (0 wins) Victories at Madison: None. 2010 High Point Finish: 12th (1,807 pts) 2010 Wins: None. Team Name: Ken Muscatel, Seattle, Wash. (0 wins) MUSCATEL Built: 1996 (5 wins) Victories at Madison: None. 2010 High Point Finish: 10th (2,550 pts) 2010 Wins: None. ——— Seattle forensic psychologist Dr. Ken Muscatel has been driving an Unlimited hydroplane since the 1991 season. His best season was 1998 when he finished sixth in the National High Points standings and second at Madison aboard the Miss Northwest Unlimited. The finish at Madison remains his only appearance on the podium. Muscatel had experimental heart surgery in the off-season but has fully recovered and is ready to climb back into the boat. His boat started life as the PICO American Dream and has been driven by such legends as Dave Villwock, Mark Evans and Chip Hanauer.

A former driver of both the Miss Budweiser and PICO American Dream teams, Evans currently has 10 career victories, third among active drivers and 16th all-time. Evans is the dean of Unlimited drivers with Porter’s threeboat team and part of his duties this season will be to mentor rookie Bianca Bononcini. Bononcini will serve as a back-up driver this season. The boat is a former back-up Winston Eagle and Smokin’ Joe’s hull that Porter acquired in 2005. Nate Brown steered it to the 2004 APBA Gold Cup title for owner Kim Gregory.

Michael Kelly finished on the podium in five of the six races last season and placed third in the national high points standings. Owners Billy and Jane Schumacher parted ways with practically their entire team after last season but the biggest news came when they inked Degree Men as a sponsor and changed their number to 88, sans the usual letter “U.” The number coincides with the NASCAR number of driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., whose Nationwide Series entry is also sponsored by Degree Men.

Since 2006, the team had raced the fourth turbine hull built by the Miss Budweiser team, but that boat was destroyed in an accident at Detroit last year. The team plans on unveiling a new ride this season.

Madison Regatta 2011

Busy offseason brings much change to Unlimiteds By DAVID CAMPBELL Courier Staff Writer

Hydro nuts — and other race fans — like to refer to that time of the year when there is no boat racing as the “Silly Season.” Rarely has an offseason been sillier than this past one. If a hydroplane fan slipped into a long winter’s nap shortly after the Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison clinched its third-straight national championship in November only to wake up in the weeks before the Madison Regatta, they would be amazed at the changes that have taken place. From new rules and new sponsors, to new teams and rookie drivers, there’s plenty of news for the average fan to try to catch up on with only a week before the season opener. So with that in mind, The Madison Courier will do its best to present a primer on everything new around the sport.

Teams — New Faces, New Numbers

No aspect of hydroplane racing is more visible than the boats on the water and there was plenty of movement during the winter. The biggest news came out of the Shumacher Racing camp where owners Billy and Jane Schumacher replaced their driver, crew, boat and even number for the upcoming season. Driver J.W. Myers, who appeared in exactly 10 heats of racing because of an accident last season, was released along with crew chief Scott Raney and the entire crew. Longtime boat owner Jim Harvey was brought in as team manager, Jeff Weiding was named crew chief and J. Michael Kelly was lured from the U-7 Graham Trucking to drive. The team also began construction on a new boat for the 2011 season. But none of that moved the needle quite like the team’s new sponsorship deal with Degree Men and its switch to the number from the U-37 to 88, without the “U-” designation. Jane Schumacher said in a statement that the new number came about as a result of a Facebook poll, but shrewd observers were quick to note that Degree Men also sponsors the NASCAR Nationwide Series entry of Dale Earnhardt Jr. Earnhardt’s number? You guess it, 88. Myers and Raney didn’t waste any time sit-

ting on the beach, and quickly reached a deal to purchase the entire U-25 Superior Racing program from owner/driver Ken Muscatel. The pair renamed their team the U-11 Unlimited Racing Group and landed Peters & May — the Schumacher’s sponsor in 2010 — as sponsor. Myers will drive the boat. With Kelly now driving for the Schumachers, owner Ted Porter quickly landed veteran Limited driver Scott Liddycoat to take over the wheel of the U-7. Porter also announced that his third boat, the U-57 Formulaboats.com, would race the entire season with Mark Evans aboard but would also serve as a platform for a driver development program. The first young driver to be signed is young Bianca Bononcini, who has been racing only three years but has already turned heads with her ability. The saga around the Shumacher camp and its ramifications was not the only news out of the boat camps. The Pennsylvania-based U-22 Webster Racing team acquired the 1988-built Miss Madison hull in May, the boat in which Steve David won his first two driver championships. The Websters also landed former Boeing exec Scott Carson as a sponsor and will run as the Great Scott! in 2011. And not to be outdone, the U-17 Miss Red Dot signed Cal Phipps to serve as radioman and backup driver for the season. Phipps’ normal ride, the U-13 Spirit of Detroit, is undergoing modifications and will not be ready this season. As a result, Phipps jumped to the Red Dot crew and will helm the boat during the APBA Gold Cup in Detroit next month.

New Rules — Water Fights

After two years of assigning lanes, H1 Unlimited decided to allow its drivers to return to fighting for lanes amid calls for a change. Unlimiteds traditionally jockeyed for position before the start of heats in an effort to seize an advantage, but that was changed after a spate of incidents and protests during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. But even with the collisions and penalties, drivers and fans both preferred the “race before the race” to assigned lanes that seemed to take the fun out of the starts. Series officials did take pains to adjust some

of the starting rules, such as making it mandatory that a boat completes one lap before the starting gun fires and to set lanes at the entrance pin of turn two, but for the most part, drivers will have carte blanch to try to grab any preferred lane. Another change came in the qualifying format. Last year, H1 Unlimited declared that all race sites will be required to have a two-hour qualifying session on Friday of race weekend to determine the qualifying ladder. But that ruled quickly fell by the wayside as race sites seemingly did whatever they wanted. This year, H1 maintains that there will be a two-hour window on Friday and only speeds recorded during that session will count toward qualifying times. Boats may test as often as they like, but their speeds will not count.

Corporate Partners — Big and Small

For the first time in nearly a decade, H1 Unlimited will have a series sponsor after inking the Air National Guard. And the Air National Guard Unlimited Hydroplane Series will get to be seen on national cable television after the organization secured a deal with the Versus Network. The sponsorship and television deals allowed many in the sport to breathe a sigh of relief after years of walking the edge. With television onboard, teams are already seeing new sponsors (such as Degree Men) and series officials say

that more attention is coming. H1 Unlimited also signed a deal to partner with Powerboat P1 USA, an offshore racing series that will begin this season. The two series will pair together at four races this season — including Madison — and the deal benefits both sides. As part of the agreement, H1 Unlimited was able to reach into a new market that it has not been a part of for more than 20 years. Which leads us to...

Race Sites — New and different

The biggest news locally came when Madison Regatta, Inc. decided to shorten its course from its traditional 2.5 mile length to a mile and twothirds for at least the next two seasons. The switch was made because construction on a new U.S. 421 Bridge is ongoing in the river and no race boats will be allowed to drive in that area until that project is complete. Rather than move the course so far down river as to render the first turn all but unwatchable, race officials decided to shorten the course. While Madison was changing its specs, H1 Unlimited officials were welcoming back an old race site by reaching a deal to race in Houston over Labor Day weekend as part of the P1 package. The Unlimiteds have raced in Houston four times, but none since 1989. The announcement gives the sport its first race in the south since running at Nashville in 2005.

From humble beginnings came ‘one heck of a legacy’

By DAVID CAMPBELL Courier Staff Writer

When industrialist Samuel Dupont donated his hydroplane, The Nitrogen, to the City of Madison in 1961, few could imagine that the legacy would span five decades and produce three national champions, 14 race wins and a movie. This year, Miss Madison Racing celebrates the 50th anniversary of the first time it hit the water. All 13 living Miss Madison drivers will be in attendance and the Madison Regatta plans on honoring its hometown boat all week long. “This is one heck of a legacy for a race team. Fifty years of racing, the longest team to race in any kind of motorsports including Roger Penske,” said Steve David, the 19th and current driver of the Miss Madison. “This is significant. I think sometimes we maybe take things for granted and I hope this time maybe we sit back for a second and realize that this is really significant.” The past four years have been the best in the community-owned team’s history with David, crew chief Mike Hanson and sponsor Oh Boy! Oberto delivering seven wins and three national championships. The previous 46 years were not nearly as successful, with only a handful of highlights sprinkled among what has largely been an average history. But the fact that the Miss Madison team survived — and even thrived — despite any kind of continued success is what made it such a fan favorite. Not just in Madison but all over the country, people consider themselves fans of the spunky, never-give-up team from the tiny town in southern Indiana. Dupont was just looking for a tax write-off when he donated The Nitrogen to the city in 1961. But Madison saw more than just a showpiece, it also saw a chance to jump into the big leagues of boat racing. Driver Marion Cooper and crew chief Graham Heath made the boat a contender in that first year with Cooper taking a secondary race at Seattle. Four years later, George “Buddy” Byers drove the second Miss Madison — purchased from

The first (above) and second (below) Miss Madisons and her volunteer crew toiling on one of the original Allison engines. Dupont in 1963 — to the team’s first win at Lake Guntersville, Ala., in 1965. The biggest moment in the team’s history, until recently, came in 1971 when Jim McCormick drove the aging boat the Gold Cup title on her home waters in Madison. Just to prove it wasn’t a fluke, McCormick won again three weeks later, this time in Tri-Cities. The rest of the 1970s were arguably the team’s toughest decade and it would be 12 more years before the team tasted success. In 1978, Miss Madison purchased the famed “Winged Wonder” from Bill Muncey and in 1983, Snyder steered the obsolete conventional hull to victory at Lake-of-the-Ozarks, Mo. In 1988, Miss Madison commissioned the building of a new cabover hull and in 1991 converted the team to turbine power. Hanson delivered the team’s fifth win when he became the first — and still only — driver to win a final from the trailer position when he did so at San Diego. David was hired in 2001 and he claimed victory in just his second race with the team when he won in Madison on the 30th anniversary of the Gold Cup win. He picked up the team’s seventh win in 2005 when he took the seasonopener at Evansville. The 2005 season proved to be the beginning of the team’s golden era. Hanson, who had left the team for several years, returned as crew chief and immediately set about to alter the boat’s performance. David rode the momentum from the season-opening win to the driver’s championship, the first in the team’s history.

David made it back-to-back driver’s titles in 2006 although the team lost the National High Points Championship by less than 200 points. A new boat was built for the 2007 season and it was immediately a contender winning races at Seattle and San Diego. Since the new boat’s construction, the Miss Madison team has doubled its win total and enters the 2011 season with a chance to join the Miss Budweiser team as the only ones with four or more consecutive national titles. “The reality is that our success and my success individually driving for you guys is only possible because I have been able to climb

on the shoulders of everybody who has come before whether it is Jon Peddie or Buddy Byers or Andy Coker, Mike Hanson, Ron Snyder, Todd Yarling,” David said. “You go down the list, every one of those guys made it possible for me to have the ride that I have today and for us to have the equipment we have today.” All 13 drivers will be honored at a celebration at The Boneyard Grill on Thursday and will serve as Grand Marshals for the Madison Regatta Parade. They will also be introduced during the Paul Overstreet concert in Bicentennial Park Friday night.

MARION COOPER (1961-62) Cooper had been racing boats since the 1930s and his Hornet won the first Indiana Governor’s Cup in 1951. Driving for the underfunded Miss Madison team, Cooper wrung as much out of the boat as possible. He won a secondary race at Seattle in 1961 and claimed a third at Madison in 1962. After the 1962 season, Cooper called it quits but he was always there for the Miss Madison team. He was often called in to counsel new Miss Madison drivers, such as Jim McCormick. He passed away in 1986. MORLAN VISEL (1963) Visel owned and piloted the Hurricane IV and Hurricane VI before coming to the Miss Madison team as Marion Cooper’s replacement in 1963. Unfortunately, Visel’s tenure was short-lived. While testing for the 1963 APBA Gold Cup in Detroit, Visel was badly injured when the Miss Madison crashed on the Detroit River and he never raced again. He died in 1983 from bone cancer. GEORGE “BUDDY” BYERS 1963-65 Arguably the highlight of Byers’ tenure in Madison came in 1964 when he placed a strong second in the national high points chase. He was also the first U-6 driver to hoist a winning trophy in the 1965 Dixie Cup in Guntersville, Ala. Although Byers retired from competitive racing in 1965 following an accident in Miami, Fla., he isn’t far from the sport. In addition to being a regular fan at the Regatta, Byers now is the chairman of the historical society at the American Power Boat Association. He resides in Columbus, Ohio, where he is head of eight automobile dealerships in the Columbus area. JIM MCCORMICK (1966, 1969-71) McCormick pulled off the team’s signature moment when he won the APBA Gold Cup in 1971 at the team’s hometown race in Madison. A native of Owensboro, Ky., McCormick had two stints as the Miss Madison pilot, but it was his second that was by far the most successful. After the 1971 season, McCormick moved on to several Unlimited teams before founding his own team in the early 1970s. As a team owner with Bob Fendler, it was McCormick who gave current Miss Madison driver Steve David his start in 1988. McCormick suffered various ailments and died after open-heart surgery in 1995. ED O’HALLORAN (1967-68) A Detroit-area Limited driver, O’Halloran made his debut in the Saveair’s Mist in 1964, the same boat that would doubled as the Miss Madison 35 years later in the movie “Madison.” In 1967, he took over the helm of the real Miss Madison during Jim McCormick’s absence, placing and placed second at the 1967 Tampa Suncoast Cup in his very first race with the team. O’Halloran served as a relief driver for several teams in the 1968 and 1969 seasons, but quickly fell ill. He passed away from a heart attack in 1969. CHARLIE DUNN (1972-73) Dunn joined the Miss Madison team in 1972 fresh off one of the most impressive Limited careers in history. As driver of the Miss Washington D.C. in the 5-Litre F Class, Dunn won an incredible 84 heats in a row.

Madison Regatta 2011

MISS MADISON DRIVERS — THE FIRST 50 YEARS A look at the 19 men who have driven for the Miss Madison Racing Team: (All 19 drivers are pictured on the front cover of this special section) He did not enjoy that same kind of success in the Miss Madison however. The first driver of the third Miss Madison, Dunn was plagued with mechanical difficulties and crashed at Detroit in 1972. Still, he managed to bring the U-6 home to a third-place finish in the 1972 Owensboro, Ky. race. Dunn resigned from the Miss Madison team in mid-1973. He passed away in the 1990s. TOM SHEEHY (1973, 1982) After Charlie Dunn resigned as driver in mid1973, the Miss Madison team turned to Sheehy to finish out the season. He also served as relief driver in 1982, pulling a second-place finish at Geneva, N.Y. Sheehy is now retired from his job as a pilot for Delta Airlines and lives in south Florida. E. MILNER IRVIN III (1974, 1978-81, 1984) Irvin had three different stints as the Miss Madison driver, taking over for a departed Tom Sheehy in 1974. In his very first Unlimited race, Irvin qualified as an Unlimited driver at Miami and nearly won the race. Although he never won a race with the Miss M, he had a successful career with the team, finishing second in the 1981 national high-point standings. After leaving the Miss Madison team, Irvin scored his lone Unlimited win, driving the Miss Renault to an unlikely victory in the 1984 World Championship at Houston. Since his retirement from the sport, he opened his own business and currently lives in Coral Gables, Fla. JERRY BANGS (1975) Bangs’ one season with the Miss Madison was a successful one, qualifying the U-6 for the final heat in six of the 10 races on the 1975 season. He finished fifth in the overall standings that season. A trial lawyer by profession, Bangs was one of the more popular drivers among his competitors on the circuit. Unfortunately, his career was cut short two years after leaving the Miss Madison when he was fatally injured in a wreck aboard the Squire at the 1977 Seattle Regatta. RON SNYDER (1976, 1982-84, 1986-88) Star ting in 1976 and running off and on through 1988, Snyder drove three different U-6 hulls and found success in virtually every boat he entered. Arguably the highlight of his career came in 1983 when he edged out the heavily favored Miss Budweiser and Atlas Van Lines to take the Missouri Governor’s Cup at the Lake-of-theOzarks. Snyder, who is still a regular on the vintage hydroplane circuit, lives in Minster, Ohio, a small town in the north central part of the state. He works as an acoustical contractor. His duties include sound dating buildings in his sub-contractor firm. JON PEDDIE (1977-78) The only Madison native to drive the hometown boat, Peddie’s had never climbed into a hydroplane in his life before getting the Miss Madison job. His racing experience was in automobiles.

In his first race, Peddie beat out 16 boats to finish fourth on his hometown course. After leaving the Miss Madison team in 1978, Peddie drove for Madisonians Graham Heath and “Wild” Bill Cantrell and their Tempo team. When he retired from racing, Peddie returned to his native Madison and set up his auto repair shop “Body by Peddie, ” at 112 W. First St. ANDY COKER (1985-86) When Ron Snyder took a one-year leave of absence in 1985, the Miss Madison team turned to record-setting 5-Litre driver Coker. Although he didn’t win a race aboard the U-6, Coker did earn Unlimited Rookie of the Year honors and finished second at Miami and Syracuse. Snyder returned to the cockpit in 1986, but Coker was called upon one final time that season for a relief stint at Tri-Cities, Wash. He finished fifth in that event. Coker drove Unlimiteds for several years after leaving the Miss Madison team before retiring for good in the late 1980s. He currently works for Florida Power & Light and resides in West Palm Beach, Fla. JERRY HOPP (1986, 2000) While Jerry Hopp was never a permanent driver for the U-6 Miss Madison team, he came to the rescue several times when the team was in need of a substitute driver. Hopp filled in twice for the crew in 1986 in Evansville and Philadelphia. In 2000, Hopp was called upon in Detroit after regular driver Charley Wiggins suffered an accident in his Unlimited Lights entry. While Hopp is now retired as a driver, he still is very close to the sport. He and his son Greg — current driver of the U-100 Leland Unlimited — own an Unlimited Lights team that is always one of the perennial favorites and the elder Hopp serves as his son’s spotter. Hopp resides in Washington state. MITCH EVANS (1988) After the regular Miss Madison was damaged in a blowover in San Diego, the U-6 team leased Ed Cooper’s U-3 for the season finale in Las Vegas in order to fulfill a sponsor commitment. The beneficiary of that was Evans, who drove for Cooper on and off from the mid 1980s until two years ago. Evans finished fifth at Las Vegas at the helm of the “Miss Madison.” Evans did pick up his share of wins on the Unlimited level, all with Cooper’s piston-powered team. He scored an upset win at Tri-Cities in 1989, then won three races in 2003 including the APBA Gold Cup at Detroit. Evans retired from racing after the 2004 season to concentrate on his business. He currently owns a marina on Lake Chelan in Washington state. MIKE HANSON (1988-98) The longest tenured pilot in Miss Madison history, Hanson drove the U-6 team for 11 years before leaving after the 1998 campaign. A veteran driver before he came to the team, Hanson took over for Ron Snyder in 1988. His first appearance was memorable as he was run over by the Miss Circus Circus as he was returning to the pits at San Diego.

23 In 1993, Hanson came from the trailer position to win at San Diego and finished second that year in the National High Point Standings. After the 1998 season, Hanson left to drive Mike and Lori Jones’ U-9. He won the 2001 APBA Gold Cup and the 2002 race in San Diego. He also drove the Miss Budweiser to a win at Lewisville, Tex. in 1994 as a relief driver. Hanson returned to Madison in 2003, this time to serve as crew chief. Since Hanson’s return, the team has won eight races and three national championships. TODD YARLING (1999) Hanover native Yarling began driving Unlimiteds in 1983 winning Rookie of the Year honors that season aboard Jim Sedam’s Miss Tosti Asti. Overall, he drove eight Unlimiteds until his appointment aboard the Miss Madison in 1999. In one season with the Miss Madison started roughly when he flipped the boat at Barrie, Ont. but he rebounded to take third place in the Virginia is for Lover’s Cup in Norfolk. Let go after the 1999 season, Yarling did not race an Unlimited again. He currently lives in Hanover. CHARLEY WIGGINS (2000) Already an accomplished Unlimited Lights racer, Wiggins looked primed to take the next step and find Unlimited success for the U-6 team before an accident in Detroit aboard his Light caused him to retire from driving permanently. Wiggins appeared in only two races for the Miss Madison team and picked up a sixth-place finish at Madison. Wiggins, who makes his home in Alabama, still runs an Unlimited Lights team along with his father Milt. He also owns a contracting firm in Destin, Fla. that specializes in beachfront construction between Destin and Panama City, Fla. NATE BROWN 2000 When former Miss Madison driver Charley Wiggins retried after surviving a horrific accident in Detroit, the U-6 team hired veteran Brown to take over the helm during the Unlimited races on the west coast. Following his departure from the team, Brown went on to pilot the U-16 Miss Elam Plus and won three races, including at Madison in 2002. He won the 2004 APBA Gold Cup aboard the U-10 Miss Detroit Yacht Club. In 2007, Brown founded his own team and his U-17 Miss Red Dot, driven by his nephew Kip Brown, will be in the pits in Madison. STEVE DAVID (2001-current) No driver has had the success aboard the U-6 that David has had. In 11 years at the helm, the personable driver has won nine races, five driver’s championships and three national championship. The 1988 Rookie of the Year while driving for former Miss Madison driver Jim McCormick, David had his best run prior to joining the Miss M team with owner Jim Harvey and U-2 Miss T-Plus. He won races at Lewisville, Texas and Honolulu in 1993 and in Kansas City in 1995. David retired from the sport in 1999, but made his return in 2001 when he was hired to drive the Miss Madison. In just his second race with the team, David drove the boat to victory at Madison in 2001. He won at Evansville in 2005, at Seattle in 2007 and 2010, at San Diego in 2007, at Tri-Cities in 2008, 2009 and 2010, and here in Madison last year.

Legendary Miss Madison driver Snyder did more with less By MARK CAMPBELL Courier Sports Editor

There are Miss Madison drivers with more wins and Miss Madison drivers with more seasons in the cockpit, but in a half-century of hydroplane racing no driver epitomizes the spirit of the communityowned race team more than Ron Snyder. The ability to do more with less defined Miss Madison Racing for the bulk of its 50 years in the sport and drivers who walked that fine line best, landed not only an occasional win but a place in the community’s heart. Ron Snyder was just such a driver over his tenure with the U-6. Snyder piloted the U-6 through seven unlimited race campaigns — 1976, 1982-84 and 1986-88 — in three different boats with one magical win and an astounding 15 podium finishes to his credit. The New Bremen, Ohio, native became an adopted son of Madison by squeezing the absolute most out of the city’s old and financially disadvantaged race hulls during a time when the sport was as competitive and budget fat as any in its history. “I had a lot of fun,” Snyder said in a phone interview recently from his home now in Minster, Ohio. “We were having fun back then, that was for sure — especially when it was nothing but piston boats. Then the turbines came into the picture. They should have outlawed them as far as I’m concerned. I tried to do it and I thought we had it done but when it came to a vote on it they got it done. I’m a piston man, not a turbine man.” But for Madison’s cash-strapped, all-volunteer crew, having fun rarely involved winning for Snyder —until he went on his famous Missouri boat ride on May 22, 1983. “The most fun I ever had was at Lake-of-the-Ozarks when we beat all the big boys,” Snyder recalled. “They were messing around trying to outdo each other — the Budweiser with Jimmy Kropfeld and the Atlas Van Lines with Chip Hanauer — and they forgot about the rest of us. I had a perfect start and won the darn race. “When you win something like that you do it for your crew, I did anyway,” Snyder added. “That’s why I stuck in it. They were all volunteers and to go out there racing and finally win one for the crew — and the city

“When you win something like that you do it for your crew, I did anyway. That’s why I stuck in it. They were all volunteers and to go out there racing and finally win one for the crew — and the city of Madison — that was probably the biggest thrill I had. I won a couple of races when I drove the Budweiser, too, but that don’t count.” Ron Snyder on his lone win with Miss Madison Racing on May 22, 1983 at Lake-of-the-Ozarks, Mo.

of Madison — that was probably the biggest thrill I had. I won a couple of races when I drove the Budweiser, too, but that don’t count.” Snyder said that overcoming long odds made that race win — and his occasional heat wins — all the more satisfying but noted that whether the equipment he drove at Madison was old or new, it was some of the best of its era, even if it was from a previous era. “We had to be the underdog. At that time we probably had the oldest boat,” Snyder said of the Ozarks win. “But that was probably the best conventional boat ever built. Ron Jones said he built it and Jim Lucero said he built it. When you got two great boat builders saying they built the same boat you know it must be good.” Snyder then took the maiden voyage in a brand new Miss Madison in his final season as driver in 1988, and while he never got a win in that boat, he did emerge from the experience a winner in life in that he lived to tell about it. “It was the newest cabover and it was something else. I thought that thing was going to set all kinds of records but it wasn’t a turbine,” Snyder said, noting the heavier Allison configuration didn’t allow the hull to keep up with the lighter turbines. Compared to the turbine-powered boats of that day the team’s brand new Miss Madison still lumbered under the weight of her massive V-12 engines. Although a few miles per

hour off the pace of the top turbines of the day, driving the 1988 hull felt like upgrading from the family station wagon to a nimble sports car to Snyder. “You bet it was better, especially sitting up front there in a cabover,” Snyder said of the team’s switch from a conventional rear open cockpit hull to an enclosed forward-placed cabover design. “It was rough sitting in the back those other years. I sent at least three chiropractors through school sitting in the back of the old conventionals. They kind of beat you up sitting in the back of the boat. It’s a lot easier ride up front. That’s for sure.” The smoother ride coupled with the arrival of the enclosed canopy and onboard oxygen made the newer boats much more safe, too. Crashes that routinely killed drivers from Snyder’s era were now survivable. “They forced everybody to put a canopy over the top of the driver and have them breathing air. That saved a lot of lives over the years when they started that,” Snyder said. “I know for a fact that when I went over in San Diego if I had not had a canopy and was breathing air, I would have drowned.” Snyder and John Prevost were racing deck-to-deck in 1988 when a 65 mph gust of wind lifted both boats off Mission Bay simultaneously, triggering the only dual blowover crash in the history of the sport. When the boats landed, Snyder’s was upside down but he was safe inside the enclosed cockpit still breathing off the onboard oxygen system.

The only driver to spend more years in Miss Madison’s cockpit than Snyder are Mike Hanson and current pilot Steve David. And while Snyder won just one race during his seven years, David has won nine races, five driver’s championships and three national championships entering his 11th season as pilot of the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison. Snyder noted that he never raced under the same pressure to win as David, but that he always entered each race expecting to do just that. “Every time I left the dock I knew I was going to win,” Snyder said. “That’s the attitude I had. I could usually beat them down to the first turn and hold them off a lap or two, but I knew they were coming behind me. They could turn a heck of a lot faster than we could with the old conventional boats, especially, and with the heavier Allison. “We had a lot of fun back then because of the situation. There wasn’t so much pressure to win, win, win,” Snyder added, noting that David’s success makes fans crave even more success. “I did my damnedest to try to win, but he’s expected to win. Since he’s been the national champion for a few years now, he’s marked. Everybody wants to beat him. He’s got to do everything perfect or he’s not going to do so well.” Although Snyder has not driven an unlimited competitively in several years, he remained active in smaller boats up until last year and still lives to go fast on the water and would consider racing again if the right opportunity was presented.

“What’s age got to do with it if you’ve still got your reflexes and you’ve got a brain on your head,” Snyder, now 72, said. Snyder and the other dozen remaining living former drivers of the Miss Madison are expected to be in Madison this Regatta as part of the team’s 50th anniversary reunion. Snyder, who attends the Regatta annually, is looking forward to the get togethers and the opportunity to see his old friends, foes and fraternal brothers of the boat. “I haven’t seen most of these guys in a long time. It’s going to be great. It’s going to be neat,” Snyder said. “I just wish they’d done it a few years earlier before we lost a couple of them. We’re going to celebrate it pretty good because I don’t think we’re going to be around another 50 so we’re going to celebrate it good and hard down there.” Snyder said there are sure to be a lot of war stories and tall tales — especially if the group can meet at one of the local watering holes to talk about their racing lives on water. “You know what it’s like sitting in a bar, having a few brews and talking about boat racing. We’ve all been 300 mph on water to hear us tell it — I bet you never knew that — and won all kinds of races and raced in barrel rivers. All kinds of stories,” he chuckled. “You better warn all the citizens of Madison that we’re coming down there. We’re going to be there for the weekend — coming down Thursday for the big party and going to be there all weekend, so they better be ready.”

Qatar driver making history with every win

ometime this year, maybe even next week in Madison, Dave Villwock will become the winningest driver in the history of Unlimited hydroplane racing. And then, the debate will begin: Is Villwock the greatest ever? For his part, Villwock is just interested in racing. Never one to be overly concerned with labels, he is approaching the 2011 season the same as his previous 19 seasons as a driver. “Every year, you just try to do a little better than you did the year before and if you do, you’ll probably be successful,” Villwock said. A record-setting driver in the Limited ranks, Villwock’s first taste of success at the Unlimited level actually came as a crew chief when he oversaw Chip Hanauer’s 1990 World Champion season aboard the Miss Circus Circus. In 1992, Villwock finally got a chance to drive in the Unlimited ranks and impressed right away, steering the Coors’ Dry to victory from lane four at San Diego in his very first race. Villwock has won at least one race in each season since 1996 and in last year’s season finale in Doha, Qatar, he drove the U-96 Spirit of Qatar to his 62nd career win to tie Bill Muncey’s all-time record. Through it all, he has downplayed what it means to catch one of his idols, and to pass former teammate Hanauer in the process. “To even be that close is cool. And to win my 62nd, and the world championship while driving the Qatar boat in front of the Qatari people, you couldn’t set up a better storyline,” Villwock said. “If I get to win another one this year, that would be cool too. I don’t know when or where that will be and certainly its likely. We’re preparing to go as fast as we

can and we’re hoping to go faster than ever before.” Ever since his career began, Villwock has been a polarizing figure. Critics point to the fact that a lion share of his

wins came for the Miss Budweiser and Miss Elam Plus/ Spirit of Qatar teams, two well-heeled operations. Supporters point to Villwock’s abilities as a propeller manufacturer and set-up man for making his rides even better. One thing nobody can argue about is that the man can fly a boat and win. Muncey won 62 races and Hanauer — Muncey’s hand-picked successor — won 61. No other driver had won more than 25 until Villwock came on the scene. “To be even with Bill Muncey in wins and to win as many Gold Cups as he did in the same season was pretty special,” Villwock said of last year. “I don’t know if it means a lot. I was just happy to be in the same club.” The Qatar team has spent the offseason trying to make the circuit’s fastest boat even faster. Villwock was the fastest qualifier at all six races in 2011 but lost the national championship to Steve David and the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison after mistakes at Madison and Tri-Cities cost the team valuable points. According to Villwock, making those small little changes can be the difference between winning and losing. “We’re always trying to develop better technically. We’re trying to develop better fins, better propellers, better engines, better nozzles, better atomizers, better everything so we can gain that extra two to five mph,” Villwock said. “If we can do that, we’ll probably be dominate. If we can’t, we won’t. That’s racing.” Of course, the biggest asset the team has is the man in the cockpit. Villwock has never altered his racing style and he doesn’t plan to start now that the record is close at hand. “I’ve always raced with the attitude of ‘refuse to lose,’” he said. “The 62nd win was a matter of refusing to lose. Make them beat you and somehow it works out. But if you choose to lose, you’ll lose.”

Mallory & Bononcini Talented females racing to break H1 gender barrier

Saturday, June, 25, 2011

By DAVID CAMPBELL

F

Courier Staff Writer

or the past 65 years, Unlimited hydroplane racing has been almost exclusively a “man’s world.” Other than Brenda Jones’ brief cup of coffee in the early 1980s, no woman has made any sort of mark in the sport. But two young women are trying to change that and years from now, 2011 could be remembered as the year that women broke through the gender barrier. Bianca Bononcini and Kayleigh Perkins Mallory are both set to make their marks in the sport this season. But while Bononcini will serve as backup driver for the U-57 Formulaboats.com as part of that team’s driver development program, Mallory is still trying to build on the success of her test aboard the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison last season to become a fully qualified driver. It is a situation that has one driver giddy with anticipation and the other frustrated by the lengthy process it takes for a driver to break into the sport. Mallory, just 24 years old, is already a three-time national champion at the Unlimited Lights level and currently sits fourth on that series’ career wins list with 10. Considered by many to be one of the rising stars in the sport, she finally got a chance to show what she could do in one of the big boats when she pulled a 148 mph lap in the Oberto at Seattle last year, which would have been good for fifth-fastest in qualifying had the mark counted. “It was like driving a school bus. It accelerated hard. But it was amazing,” Mallory said. “I didn’t realize I was going as fast as I was.” Part of the reason Mallory got the chance to test the Oberto was to show what she could do. She believed the success of the test might lead to a ride in the Unlimiteds this season, but so far, she has had no luck. “I thought it might lead to something this year but nothing has come of it,” she said. “I think I surprised some people. I know I surprised myself. But apparently it wasn’t enough.” There was a possible deal being worked to drive the Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison backup boat but that plan was dropped when the team sold the craft to the U-22 Webster Racing Team. Mallory admits that she was upset when she heard about the news concerning the Oberto sale and that she did not handle it well. “I was excited about it and I know (Miss Madison Team Manager) Charlie (Grooms) was excited. But it was a business decision and that is something that I have to get used to,” she said. “This sport is 100 percent business. In this sport, nothing is concrete until you get on the water, and then sometimes not even then. I kind of got caught up in the emotion of it earlier in the year. It was a harsh reality but it is something I need to get used to.” Getting a ride at the Unlimited level has always been one of the hardest chores in professional sports. Dave Villwock, who sits atop the all-time wins list with 62, didn’t get a shot at an Unlimited ride until he was 37 years old. But Mallory also believes that being a woman has made it more difficult for her to break through. “I think (being a woman) has a lot to do with it,” Mallory said. “There is another girl who is getting her chance and I wish her luck. But I didn’t do this last year to prove that any woman could do it, I did it to prove that I could do it. It’s going to be very difficult for her and if something happens, she’s going to hear a lot about it. I hope she’s ready for it.” About the same time that Mallory saw a potential ride slip-

Bianca Bononcini (above) and Kayleigh Perkins Mallory (right) ping away, Bononcini was being informed that her dream was about to come true. While not as experienced as Mallory, Bononcini, 25, has had her share of success at the 1-Litre level over the past three years. The daughter of veteran driver Phil Bononcini — ironically, one of the drivers Mallory is trying to catch on the ULHRA all-time list — Bianca has been around the sport her entire life. “I’m so excited. I just feel so fortunate to have the chance,” Bononcini said. “Growing up in a family of racers, I knew that this is what I wanted to do. I feel so blessed that they are giving me this chance.” Bononcini’s chance comes as part of the Precision Performance Engineering Race Team’s Driver Development Program. She will be paired with veteran driver Mark Evans who will show her the ends and outs of Unlimited hydroplane racing and serve as her mentor. “He has seen everything, done everything. I just love him. I’m fascinated by him,” Bononcini said of Evans. “He’s always talking and has these great stories. Following my dad around to races I had seen a lot but I had no idea about all of the behind the scene stories. He’s just a class act. He’s a great guy.” Like Mallory, Bononcini believes that the fact that she is a woman has overshadowed her accomplishments on the race course. “I’ve heard a lot from critics about how I’ve only raced in 1-Litres and blah, blah, blah,” Bononcini said. “But two of the guys currently racing came straight from the outboards and a lot of Unlimited drivers had only raced in the flat-bottoms. “At the end of the day, racing is racing whether you’re a boy or a girl. Turn left, then go straight.” Bononcini said that her father was not initially happy when he found out she wanted to continue the family business, but he has since turned into her biggest fan. “I’ve always idolized my dad. He wasn’t thrilled when I started racing. I mean, I’m his little girl,” she said. “But after I got started, he’s been very supportive. He took me out into the

driveway and set up cones and made me walk around them, timing myself to the next cone. It’s the way he learned when he was getting started.” Bononcini will be in Madison with the U-57 team next weekend and owner Ted Porter has already said he is hoping to give her some seat time on Madison’s suddenly small mile and two-thirds course. “One of our goals is to get Bianca out there,” Porter said. “That small course should be perfect for her. It’s more of what she’s used to.” Mallory, on the other hand, will be skipping Madison as well as all other Unlimited races. With no ride imminent, she prefers to concentrate on her smaller boats. “I’m very frustrated. I thought that I had proven myself. This sport is extremely frustrating but it is also very rewarding,” Mallory said. “This may not be what I want right now, but I’m having a blast this year. I have my Unlimited Light and my 1Litre and we have a great team and I’m concentrating on that.” However, Mallory was also quick to note that she doesn’t plan on being away from Madison long. “I plan on racing in Madison someday, you can count on that,” she said. “Everything happens for a reason but I promise you, I’ll be there.”

Bononcini, Mallory not the first to break gender barrier By FRED FARLEY

H1 Unlimited Historian

ho says that Unlimited hydroplane racing is a “men only” sport? It isn’t. You will find waiting in the wings no fewer than two female participants who are determined to make their mark in “Water Racing’s Greatest Show.” They are Kayleigh Perkins Mallory and Bianca Bononcini. Both young ladies are in their early 20s and have impressive credentials as drivers Fred Farley in the Limited Inboard Unlimited Historian classes. They view Unlimited competition as a logical next step in their racing careers. Both Mallory and Bononcini come from boat racing families. Kayleigh’s brother, Brian Perkins, drives the U-21 Unlimited hydroplane for the Go Fast-Turn Left Racing Team; Bononcini’s father, Phil Bononcini, is a retired National Champion driver in the Unlimited Light Class.

To date, in the post-World War II era, only one woman has ever driven in an Unlimited race. She was Brenda Jones who qualified in 1981. During her brief career, Brenda finished first in a preliminary heat at Seattle in 1982 and in a consolation heat at San Diego, also in 1982, as driver of owner Pat O’Day’s Miss KYYX. Prior to World War II, no fewer than three women drove in Unlimited or Gold Cup Class competition. The best known of these was Marian Barbara (”Betty”) Carstairs, the British challenger, who three times sought unsuccessfully to wrest the Harmsworth International Trophy from the U.S. defender, Gar Wood. Ms. Carstairs was a gutsy lady indeed. The Standard Oil heiress drove ambulances on the battlefields of France during World War I. Delphine Dodge Cromwell of the Dodge automotive family was the first woman to drive in the APBA Gold Cup race in 1926 and 1933. Maud Rutherfurd was part of the husband-and-wife driving team of Jack and Maud Rutherfurd. She made several starts in the prestigious National Sweepstakes Regatta for single-engine Unlimited hydroplanes in the 1930s. Kayleigh Perkins Mallory is a three-time

consecutive National Champion in the Unlimited Lights for the years 2007, 2008, and 2009. The Lights can be compared to the Triple-A leagues in baseball and Ms. Mallory hopes to step up to the major league Unlimited level soon. At the 2010 Seafair Regatta, Kayleigh had the opportunity to test drive the U-1 Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison on Seattle’s Lake Washington. For someone who had never before jockeyed an Unlimited hydroplane around buoys, she reeled off some pretty impressive lap speeds — the fastest at 147.058 miles per hour around the 2-mile oval course. Bianca Bononcini has been driving in the Limited category since 2008, most notably in the 1.5-Litre Class. She gives a lot of credit to her Dad who serves as her radio man on race days. According to Bianca, “He tells me who’s coming up on me, who’s on the outside, who’s on the inside, and how much time I have left before the start. I would not be doing as well as I am without him.” For 2011, Bononcini has a major opportunity with the Ted Porter Unlimited team as back-up driver for the U-57 Formulaboats. com. She is part of Porter’s New Driver

Development Program, which is patterned after similar development programs in other forms of motorsports. Bianca will test, qualify and race the U-57 under the guidance of veteran driver Mark Evans at certain events. In Porter’s words, “This gives our team a competitive edge that no other team can match. This perfect blend of youth and experience will keep us a front-runner and move us beyond recent years.” ••• The writer Fred Farley has has attended more than 250 Unlimited hydroplane races and has served as the American Power Boat Association’s H1 Unlimited Historian since 1973. He and his writing partner, Ron Harsin, have penned seven books on Unlimited racing including “The Madison Regatta” released in May. Farley and Harsin will hold a book signing from 4-6 p.m. Friday, July 1 at the Village Lights Bookstore, 110 E. Main St., Madison.

Porter’s team unleashing triple-threat in 2011 N

By DAVID CAMPBELL Courier Staff Writer

estled in a warehouse down a tree-lined street in the northern Indiana town of Decatur, few would suspect that inside sits the home of the largest team in the H1 Unlimited fleet. The Precision Performance Engineering Team, better known as Formulaboats.com, calls Decatur home and has done so since its inception in 2006. Owner Ted Porter, whose family owns the Formula Boats Company, relocated his team to the site of a former Budweiser Distributorship several years ago to accommodate his growing fleet. It’s an ironic twist of fate considering that it was Porter’s acquisition of the former Miss Budweiser equipment that started the team five years ago. “Oh the neighbors just love us,” said team manager Mark Hooton with a wry smile. “Actually, we used to have a motorcycle racing team in the garage next door and they would test out their bikes on Adams Street. So, since they left, the neighbors haven’t said a word. “When we trailer fire one of the boats in the street, the kids come from all over to watch.” Porter enters the 2011 season with seven Unlimited hydroplanes under his ownership. Four of the hydros are now being used strictly for display purposes and are out of building. But in the warehouse on Adams Street, three boats are nestled together with enough room to spare for an equipment truck, storage for the team’s equipment and engines, and offices. Half of the building is dedicated to painting and sanding of the boats. It is a far cry from where the PPE team started. When Porter purchased the Miss Budweiser T-5 and T-6 hulls to go along with his first boat, he had more boats than room. “Our first shop was this small garage right across from Ted’s house,” Hooton said. “If we needed to do anything on one of the boats, like pull an engine, we would have to pull everything out of the shop to get to it. It was a little tight.” Porter won the national championship in his very first season as an Unlimited owner when rookie Mike Allen steered the U-7 Formulaboats. com II to the title in 2006. But this year, he has ramped up his program to three full-time boats and will also

Porter’s top boats, the U-5 Graham Trucking and the U-7 Valken Sports, both feature catchy new paint schemes but it is what is underneath the wrap that makes the team dangerous. The team has spent the offseason getting the two flagships ready for what many believe will be a grueling season. “We have spent a lot of time building new wings and other parts,” Hooton said. “With three boats, we have to be ready in case we break something, and we expect

Madison to be a pretty rough race.” The most work however has been saved for the U-57 Formulaboats. com, the entry that Evans and Bononcini will share time in. The boat, which started life as the U-10 Winston Eagle “lobster boat” in 1991, needed quite a bit of work just to get on the water last season. The biggest problem was parts. Built by Jim Lucero, the U-57 was not compatible with either of the Budweiser-built hulls and Hooton and the crew were left scrambling to put it together. “Luckily, the Lucero stuff is compatible with the (Fred) Leland stuff and we were able to finally get what

we needed,” Hooton said. “Mark had a few changes he wanted us to make and we were able to get them done and we think we’re going to have a pretty fast boat. Mark is pretty excited about the season.” Running a three-boat team has its disadvantages but Porter has been able to make it work in the past. His drivers are the only ones to break the monopoly that Steve David and Dave Villwock have had over the sport over the past four years. But Porter, who serves on seemingly every major H1 Unlimited committee, doesn’t necessarily do it just to win races. “We’re trying to help out the sport

anyway we can,” he said. “You try to bring as much exposure to the sport as you can and that helps out everybody.” In the front office of the shop on Adams Street sits a trophy case where the PPE team has placed their hardware earned over the past several years. Filled to the brim, trophies now sit on the floor, on desks and on bottles of water because there is no where to put them. With the plans the team has this season, it may be time to build a new case. “I think we’re just going to build a new wing,” said crewmember Bob Rainwaters with a smile.

Powerboat P1 USA to bring unique style of racing to Madison By DAVID CAMPBELL Courier Staff Writer

The Powerboat P1 USA series is set to make its debut at Madison and will bring a type of racing to the area never before seen. The P1 series is teaming up with H1 Unlimited at four races this season, starting with this year’s Lucas Oil Indiana Governor’s Cup. While the P1 series itself has been around for several years, this will be the first year of the new USA Superstock series. “This is an important step for P1 USA,” Martin Sanborn, P1 USA Managing Director said of the partnership. “The event schedule for our initial season had to be spectacular, and we can’t think of a better way to make a splash than to be involved with the pageantry and professionalism of the H1 Unlimited series. With their title sponsor for 2011, the Air National Guard, the events with the H1 series will be incredible.” The Powerboat P1 series is based in Great Britain and has been racing in the British Isles for the past nine years. The P1s did see action at several sites in the United States last year, but this year will be the first for a full American schedule. The P1 boats resemble off-shore boats and are capable of racing in up to eight-foot swells. But unlike the larger off-shores, the P1s are capable of running on smaller courses, such

as Madison’s newly redesigned mile and twothirds track. One of the unique features of the P1 series will be its racing format. Over 20 boats are expected in Madison for a two-day event with each day featuring different styles of racing. On Saturday, July 2, boats will be paired in a series of head-to-head match races. A specialized course will be set up on the existing hydroplane course where P1 boats will be faced with a lane containing three buoys in line but will race around them in different order to keep the winner in suspense until a final dash for the line. Winners of each match race will advance, bracket-style, until the final two boats are left. There, an extended two-lap finale will be contested to determine the winner. The winner of the match race will earn the pole position for the first of two SuperStock races on Sunday. In those races, boats will be filled with fuel before the race starts and will not be allowed to re-fuel. The marriage between Powerboat P1 and H1 Unlimited will benefit both sides. Powerboat gets a chance to grow next to a series that has existed since World War II and the Unlimiteds get to return to Houston to race there for the first time since 1989. The two series will also share television expenses at their four paired sites.

Powerboat P1 USA’s SuperStock series boat (above) will race on a unique course at Madison (right) in Saturday’s head-to-head match races. “The inclusion of the P1 USA and the SuperStock series into the H1 event platform will allow us to bring another professional series to the water at some of longest-standing event venues in the sport,” H1 Unlimited Chairman Sam Cole said. “They are capable of running on shorter courses, and can continue to run in the roughest conditions, insuring continuous water activity.” After Madison, the two series will head to Detroit July 8-10. H1 Unlimited will race in Tri-Cities, Wash. on July 29-31 and Seattle in Aug. 5-7 while Powerboat P1 will head to Morehead City, N.C. on Aug. 19-21. The two series will rejoin forces in Houston over Labor Day weekend on Sept. 2-4 and in San Diego on Sept. 16-18. H1 Unlimited will close out the season Nov. 17-19 in Doha, Qatar.
