A REGATTA SPECTATOR’S GUIDE TO A SAFE BUT FUN WEEKEND

By RENEE BRUCK

B

The Madison Courier

Courier Staff Writer

efore packing up a cooler or the car to head down to the riverfront for the Madison Regatta, remember a few guidelines to make the weekend — and gate entry — less stressful for everyone. Madison Regatta office manager and past president Crystal McHargue said only a few rules apply to the Madison Regatta weekend festival, and most rules are in place for safety. No glass bottles or containers will be allowed through the gates, nor will any weapons be allowed on the riverfront during the festivities. Also leave the skateboards, bicycles and pets at home. Those items won’t be allowed through the gates either. Most anything else — within reason — will be allowed for visitors to enjoy the weekend on the riverfront. Here are a few recommended items Madison Regatta fans might find useful to take along for a weekend of festivities and racing.

• Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. While everyone hopes for good weather during the Madison Regatta, the sun can cause painful memories after the

race because of sunburn. Take along sunscreen with a high enough SPF number that will help protect you from the sun. A hat can provide shade and protect skin. • Money. More than 30 vendors will be on hand selling food, merchandise and memorabilia during the weekend, McHargue said. Other stores and restaurants will also be selling must-have food and other items throughout the festivities. • Lawn chairs. There isn’t extra seating or benches added to the riverfront especially for the weekend event, and unless standing all day sounds fun, be sure to take something to sit on. If moving around sounds better than sitting during the races, a chair might save a favorite view of the race course. • Food. Food will be allowed through the gates if a favorite restaurant sounds more appealing throughout the weekend, but a variety of food items will be sold by dozens of vendors on Vaughn Drive. Even alligator meat will be on the menu of one vendor this year, McHargue said. “You name it, we got it,” she said. • Comfortable shoes. While a comfortable spot in the shade works for a while, there’s a lot to see along the riverfront. Be sure to take a comfortable pair of shoes to walk to the vendors or

Adult beverages are allowed on the riverfront during the Regatta as long as they are not in glass containers, sunscreen and hats are a good way to protect skin from sunburn and cash is always handy for souvenirs but remember to drink in moderation and a souvenir hat, while very cool, might not offer enough protection. (Courier file photos) to walk the space inside the gates to find a good seat. • Bottled water. Keep water on hand throughout the weekend for hydration. While medical personnel will be on hand during the racing events, don’t cut the racing weekend short because of a trip to the hospital due to heat-related illnesses that could have been prevented by staying hydrated.

• Coolers. Make sure to keep a refreshment of choice chilled throughout the day. Coolers will be allowed through the gates on the riverfront throughout the weekend, McHargue said. • Adult refreshments. Adult refreshments are allowed through the gates during the Madison Regatta, but be aware that police will be on the riverfront to deal with any problems that

might arise. • Madison Regatta wristband. Don’t forget to buy the wristband that serves as the ticket to events on the riverfront. The cost of Madison Regatta wristbands are $25, and cold pit passes are available for $20. Wristbands can be bought online at www.madisonregatta.com, by calling (812) 265-5000 or at one of the Regatta gates.

Cooler temperatures are well on their way. So too, are higher energy costs associated with keeping warm during the cold winter months. With electricity and energy costs at record highs, this quiz will help you identify ways to save on energy bills. Take our quiz and find out if you’ re ready for winter!

HOW DID YOU DO? If you scored mostly “a”s, you are ENERGY SAVVY Great job! You know that keeping up your home means more than making sure the trash is taken out or the dishes get done.
