Ferrari’s new FXX K research and development program receives its world premiere next weekend at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. The laboratory-car is based on Maranello’s first hybrid model and will grace the world’s tracks from next year onwards. The K in its moniker is a reference to the “KERS” kinetic energy recovery system it adopts in maximising its track performance.

Unfettered by homologation and racing regulations, the FXX K will never be used in competition. It was, in fact, developed to be completely uncompromising, incorporating technological innovations that will guarantee an unprecedented driving experience to the exclusive group of Client-Test Drivers with whom the Prancing Horse will roll out a test program over the coming two years. The car’s enormous potential is attested to by two significant figures: a total power output of 1050 cv (860 cv delivered by its conventional V12 engine and 190 by its electric motor) and maximum torque in excess of 900 Nm. The FXX K’s 6262 cc V12 features

new camshafts and a modified valve train with mechanical rather than hydraulic tappets. The intake manifolds have been redesigned and given a special type of polishing treatment. The exhaust system has been modified as its silencers have been eliminated. The HY-KERS system has been evolved specifically for pure performance with the result that the driver can control the function logics from the specific 4-setting Manettino on the centre console: Qualify, for maximum performance within a limited number of laps; Long Run to optimise performance consistency; Manual Boost for instant maximum torque delivery; and Fast Charge, for a fast recharge of the car’s battery.

A focus on delivering maximum efficiency at every stage of every track lap has resulted in extensive but integrated work on the entire car body in terms of both active and passive aerodynamics. The front of the car is dominated by a twinprofile spoiler and a larger splitter, which is 30 mm lower, with a gap in its centre. This design is an application of the concepts developed to improve aero balance in the GT category of the WEC, which Ferrari has won for three consecutive years. Two pairs of vertical elements, an endplate and, externally, a dive plane, together with vertical fins channel the air towards the car’s flanks, generating a longitudinal vortex that creates a localised depression. This in turn sucks the wake from the wheels to the outside of

the aerodynamic underbody. Along with the side skirts that extend out from the sills, the vortex helps isolate the airflow from the underbody to boost its efficiency. The solutions on the rear of the car are highly sophisticated, too. The tail section is now higher and the mobile spoiler extends further for a total increase in extension of 60mm when fully deployed. A vertical fin and a small wing each side of the tail act as guide vanes in the low drag configuration and boost the spoiler’s efficiency in the high downforce one. This system also creates considerable downforce at the rear of the car, allowing the use of an extreme diffusion volume for the rear diffuser which optimises air extraction from the underbody. The section of the flat underbody just ahead

of the rear wheels is also exploited to the full to generate downforce thanks to the reduced pressure in the wheel arch guaranteed by the direct connection to the rear of the car by a by-pass duct. The result is a 50% improvement in downforce in the low drag configuration and a 30% improvement in the more aggressive downforce configuration, resulting in a figure of 540 kg at 200 km/h. Vehicle dynamics are further improved by the adoption of Pirelli slicks complete with sensors that monitor longitudinal, lateral and radial acceleration, as well as temperature and pressure. This ensures an accurate analysis of the interaction between the tyre and track surface, providing even more vital data to enable the traction control system to guarantee maximum performance. The intervention level of the E-Diff electronic differential, F-Trac traction control, Racing SSC (Side Slip Angle Control) – now specially calibrated to suit the car’s slick tyres – and the high-performance ABS can be controlled using the five-position Manettino on the steering wheel. ‹‹‹

E-TYPE Jaguar announced in May 2014 that it would recreate six new Lightweights, each built by Jaguar Heritage, part of Jaguar Land Rover’s new Special Operations division The core component of the Lightweight E-type is its aluminium bodyshell. This material replaced the steel of the production E-type in the quest to shed weight – some 250lb (114kg) were saved compared with the standard car. Despite the 50-year gap, the aluminium build of the six new Lightweights gives them an immediate affinity with the current Jaguar range, the F-TYPE and XJ models being built to exacting standards with aluminium bodies for exactly the same reason. In fact, Jaguar is now the world's leading manufacturer of aluminium-bodied cars and the company

has unrivalled experience in the relatively new field of applying aluminium technology to volume production cars. So when tasked with the job of recreating the Lightweight E-type's aluminium body, today's Jaguar engineers could relate at once to what their predecessors had achieved 50 years before. However, despite the enormous advances in technology since the early 1960s, the decision was taken not to incorporate modern materials or fixing methods. While high-strength aluminium alloys and bonded structures would have been invisible, they would not have been true to the original design – and nor would they have conformed to the FIA’s homologation requirements for historic racing. Instead, today's advanced technology was deployed to ensure the highest quality and most faithful rendition of the Lightweight E-type's open two-seater body components. Using state-of-the-art scanning technology, the inner and outer surfaces of a Lightweight bodyshell were digitally mapped. The resulting massively detailed scan, which recorded dimensions and shape down to a fraction of a millimetre, was then assessed by Jaguar's technicians to validate how the body was assembled back in the 1960s,

how consistent the structure was side-to-side, and how it could be engineered today to produce the highest quality result for the Lightweight E-type project. As this digital capturing process gave Jaguar's engineers complete control over the Lightweight E-type body's 230 individual components, their shapes could then be optimised before the data was sent to the tool room at Jaguar's Whitley engineering centre. Even panels which are unseen within the structure have been faithfully reproduced. To ensure absolute symmetry, one side of the scanned body was used as the datum, this being 'flipped' to produce an identical condition on the opposite side. Additionally, before being signed-off, the outer ‘A-surface’ CAD scan was transferred to Jaguar's design department where the surface geometry was finalised. All this work ensured that the tooling from which the majority of the new body parts are produced is as accurate as possible. Approximately 75 per cent of the panels are made inhouse at Whitley, just a few very large pressings being supplied by external specialists using Jaguar-designed tooling. The grades of aluminium used for both the understructure and surface panels are almost identical in mechanical properties to those used for the original 1963 Lightweight E-types. The body is completed to original Lightweight E-type Chassis no. 12 condition, by which time Jaguar had added some additional strengthening in key areas of the shell. The aluminium body is then completed by the addition of an aluminium bonnet, doors and trunk lid. As with the original cars, an aluminium hard top is standard. The development of the body-in-white tooling was undertaken by the same department that builds all Jaguar Land Rover prototype vehicles, so the expertise applied to the project was world-class. The build process and assembly procedures were initially proved out on Car Zero; this is effectively an engineering prototype and will not carry one of the six Lightweight chassis numbers. For the Lightweight E-type project, Jaguar's engineers created a 'grey book' of the type used during the

This internal document sets out the required quality standards in terms of bodyshell fit-and-finish and ensures a consistency of build quality for all six new Lightweight E-types. It was this engine that had powered the C- and D-types to five Le Mans victories in the 1950s, and the unit developed for the Lightweight E-type is based on the 3,868cc (236 cu in) engine which, in the D-type, had won Le Mans in 1957. A similar big valve 'wide angle' cylinder head is used, but in place of the D-type's cast iron block, Jaguar introduced an aluminium block for the Lightweight E-type which substantially reduced the amount of weight over the front wheels. This also features in the present-day car, with pressed-in steel

Another major feature transferred from the D-type is the dry sump lubrication system. This uses a scavenge pump to collect oil from the sump and return it to a separate oil tank in the underbonnet area. This eliminates oil surge during fast cornering and consequent risk of damage to the engine's bearings, and also allows a greater quantity of oil to be carried. The compression ratio is 10:1 and today's car is supplied with three 45DCO3 Weber carburettors. These were homologated by Jaguar for the Lightweight E-type in addition to a Lucas mechanical fuel injection system – which is being offered

to customers as a cost-option (and which is fitted to Car Zero). The exhaust manifold is a steel fabrication and leads the exhaust gasses into twin pipes which take them through a centre silencer box to the rear of the car, where the exhaust system ends in twin polished tail pipes.

single-plate clutch and a Jaguar closeratio, manual four-speed all-synchromesh gearbox as used by the Lightweight E-type in period. A variety of final drive ratios are available, all with the Powr-Lok limited-slip differential, but a 3.31:1 ratio is supplied as standard.

Whether carburettors or fuel injection is specified, brake horsepower is well over 300, and with torque in the region of 280lb ft at 4500 rpm, the car is endowed with rapid acceleration from comparatively low engine revs – a traditional feature of Jaguar racing engines.

The twin wishbone front suspension and independent wide-based wishbone rear suspension (where the drive-shaft serves as the upper link) are set-up according to period racing practice, with uprated shock absorbers controlling the torsion bar springs (front) and the four coil springs (rear).

A 12 volt negative earth electrical system is used, and the engine benefits from a modern inertia-type starter motor. The water and oil radiators are in aluminium alloy, there is an aluminium expansion tank for the coolant, and the fuel tank is mesh-filled for safety. The power is transferred to the road via a lightweight, low inertia flywheel, a

The steering is the excellent standard E-type rack-and-pinion, with a traditional wood-rim wheel for the driver. Larger (12.25in) brake discs are fitted at the front, with the rear brakes being standard E-type. No servo is fitted. The 15in diameter wheels are period type in the correct 'perforated' style, and like the

originals are cast in magnesium alloy. Rim width is 7in front, 8in rear. Dunlop racing tyres are fitted, 6.00 section front, 6.50 section rear, both in CR65 compound. The monocoque bodyshell is built at Whitley where it is mated to its tubular engine sub-frame – which is stiffened with gussets as for the original Lightweight – and then shipped to Jaguar's Gaydon facility for painting. From there it is then taken to Jaguar Heritage at Browns Lane where the car is built up with powertrain, suspension, brakes, steering, electrical items, instrument panel and soft trim. This process takes place in a dedicated area close to where the original Lightweight E-types were assembled in 1963/64, and the work is undertaken by highly skilled technicians used to assembling extremely complex JLR prototypes. It is at this stage that personal consultation with the customer dictates the final


Jaguar in the 1960s. This leather is used to trim the competition-type aluminium bucket seat base. The centre console covering is also leather, and there is a choice of seven trim colours. As befits a thoroughbred GT car where weight saving in all areas is demanded, interior trim is minimal. However, the customer can opt for a more fully-trimmed car and the Jaguar team can devise bespoke trim packages. This may include door cards, headliner for the hardtop, removable custom saddle-leather floor mats, and a cover for the transmission tunnel.

Car Zero underwent a 15-day shake-down period at Jaguar Land Rover's test facility at Gaydon to prove out the car's dynamics and establish optimum suspension settings. This involved Mike Cross, Jaguar's Chief Engineer, Vehicle Integrity. Jaguar's engineers even established a 'design verification plan' for the car, just as they would do for an entirely new model. Each of the six new Lightweights will go

through shake-down tests to ensure that they meet the required standards in terms of braking, handling and steering. Jaguar's Advanced Design Studio has been involved in the project from an early stage, charged with arriving at the appropriate level of trim for the new car, together with selecting the materials used and the nature and colour of finishes. AMG GT THE NEW MERCEDES

The first Mercedes was a racing car, its most recent successor carries this heritage forward: with the new Mercedes-AMG GT, the Mercedes-AMG sports car brand is moving into a new, top-class sports car segment for the company. The GT is the second sports car developed entirely inhouse by Mercedes-AMG. Its front mid-engine concept with transaxle and the intelligent aluminium lightweight construction form the basis for a highly dynamic driving experience. Its likewise newly developed AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine underscores the hallmark AMG driving performance. The first sports car engine with internally mounted turbochargers ('hot inside V') and dry sump lubrication is configured in two output ratings: as a GT with 462 hp and as a GT S with 510 hp. The new GT combines driving dynamics and first-class racetrack performance with superb everyday practicality, and efficiency that sets new standards in the segment. Following in the footsteps of the SLR and SLS AMG GT, the Mercedes-AMG GT is easily one of the most anticipated cars of the year. For well over a decade, AMG has worked to create a single model which sums up the world's oldest car manufacturer's focus on performance going back to the 19th century.

performance that was in extreme supercar territory for its day while also offering a more controlled and luxurious grand touring character. One of its most recognized features were its butterfly doors. While Mercedes-Benz planned to build 3500 of them, the actual number manufactured was closer to half that.

Which brings us to the new MercedesAMG GT. While offical pricing has not been announced, a sticker of about $120k is expected. The AMG GT will aim for a more affordable market niche than its SLS AMG GT predecessor. While still a far from affordable car for the vast majority of people, it is also likely that this will be a more realistic aspirational vehicle for the general automotive enthusiast. If not during the production run, then maybe a few years down the road! And like the many generations of Mercedes-Benz

THE NEW MERCEDES-AMG GT IS A SPORTS CAR IN ITS

sports cars that have been cared for and restored by their owners to this day, expect the AMG-GT to be an instant classic that will find a home in garages across the globe for many decades to come. How does it compare in specs to the SLS AMG? While there were different variations of this model, the SLS AMG GT Finale Edition had an output of 583 hp from its naturally aspirated 6.2 liter V8. By comparison, the GT features a newly developed twin turbocharged 4 liter V8 producing 462 hp with an optional GT S variant producing 510 hp. The compactness of the engine is greatly enhanced by turbochargers being placed within the V of the two cylinder banks rather than on either side of the engine. This configuration, called "hot inside V," offers the added benefits of quick turbo response and low emissions. The AMG GT is in fact the first sports car engine with both "hot inside V" and dry sump lubrication together, with the latter offering improved cooling and better lubrication under the most extreme driving conditions. ‹‹‹

The approach that made the nanoFLOWCELL® system’s rapid advances possible was based on extensive research activities in the nanoFLOWCELL AG’s DigiLab simulation lab in Zurich, Switzerland. This is where mastermind and director of development, Nunzio La Vecchia, and his team have been investigating key aspects of quantum chemistry through molecular engineering. Years of experimentation went into simulating and digitally testing charge transport mechanisms, then synthesising and real-world testing of the resulting materials.

This work produced charge-carrier liquids significantly more concentrated than those used in conventional redox flowcell systems. Whilst terrestrial redox flowcells operate using electrolyte tanks that hold thousands of litres, a few hundred litres is enough to power the QUANT e-Sportlimousine on a long drive. Development of the prototype’s powertrain concept being shown in Geneva will continue for the nanoFLOWCELL AG as a part of the overall vehicle concept. The production

of five more prototypes for research and development is planned for 2014. The small team at nanoFLOWCELL® AG has big challenges ahead of it and is working with major partners to further optimise the technologies presented here. T

he core business of the known for racing sports techniques WIMMER company from Solingen, Germany, is still the professional optimization of the serial data (chip tuning) and all kind of other areas relating to power improvement, like engine modifications, hand made stainless steel sports exhausting systems, chassis techniques and – simply necessary when needed – high performance braking systems. In this case it is allowed, by the way, to talk about „genuine handicraft“, because WIMMER “tailors” carefully each vehicle individually to the customer's needs on an ultra-modern DjnoJet testing bench. Furthermore, WIMMER is competence partner of the KW company and renowned service partner for X-BOW of KTM. Concerning the last mentioned point, the WIMMER specialists have begun to work and transformed three members of the X-BOW-”family” into a really infernal trio with all in all more than 1,300 HP.

WITH 1,300 HP First of all, there is the X-BOW GT. Thanks to the extended engine tuning “made by WIMMER” with metal cat, modified turbo charger, optimized high compression pump, special air suction, special WIMMER exhaust system, a lot of internal hardware upgrades inside the engine and modified chassis components and giant Wimmer EVO 2-Carbon rear wings with

adjustable flaps, the serial parameters of 285 HP (= 210 kW) and 420 Nm of max. torque have been catapulted up to diabolic 485 HP (= 357 kW) and 520 Nm of max. torque. For comparison: An indeed potent AMG 45 with an engine output of „only“ 180 HP per liter is in a way an altar boy when comparing it to the engine output of 242,5 HP made by WIMMER, and that

apropos of nothing with just only 850 kgs of weight! The power to weight ratio of 1,75 kgs per HP only brings tears of joy in the eyes of even the hardest friends of engine power, along with the possible lateral acceleration of 1.5 G with onroad tires. This warrants for a spurt from 0 to 60 mph of clearly below 4 seconds with Vmax of 160 mph (255 kmph), surely enough to let the driving fun free running sometimes on track days at the very front of the first league. Moreover, the car handling has been clearly optimized even in the threshold by interventions

into the aerodynamic characteristics on the downthrust. But also for everyday driving with wind shield and some softer drift suspension, the country road “bend robber” with its full carbon chassis is eye catcher par excellence. Of course, this one and other WIMMER X-BOW belong into the hands of real men with “gun license” only. Also in this case, pure driving feeling is not spoiled by ESP, ABS, traction control or even servo steering. The price for this exposition car is about 130.000 Euro.

The next one is the in fact for speedway engineered X-BOW R. By analogy with the GT, the WIMMER motor tuning team provides this bolide by 455 HP (= 335 kW) with 500 Nm of max. torque instead of 300 HP (= 220 kW) and 400 Nm of max. torque with Vmax of 154 mph (248 kmph) by help of the already known extensive interventions. Thus, the 785 kgs car is driven thoroughly according to its stand. Optionally available is an especially reinforced gear with sports clutch and high end differential lock. Besides the chassis modification, the vehicle has central locking, rendering the wheel change somewhat faster, and company own dynamic flaps in visible carbon fiber as supplementary equipment. Here, once more, is shown the competence of WIMMER RST even in fields of chassis tuning with wheel load measuring and an especially “tailored” to customer's needs setup. Besides the recent technical preconditions, the professional advertisement warrants for fastest lap times. Except for the racing course, the X-BOW R is also feared on mountain passes and as “country road robber”. The exposition vehicle is available for 120.000 Euro. Depending on the driving route, here also made by WIMMER EVO 2 wings can be favorably integrated into the car conception. Likewise there are optionally available totally special optimizations


going just even to custom made parts in visible carbon fiber for all car models. And finally the third family member: X-BOW RR. Here is no need to be spoiled by the choice of speedway or country road tuning, because the RR has no road approval, being thus a pure battle car with air restrictor. In the estate here shown, it brings along 370 HP (= 272 kW) worth of 110,000 Euro as WIMMER exposition car. Concerning this exemplar, everything has been optimized for the pursuit of the last decisecond under racing conditions. Optionally, there is also a special WIMMER North loop setup incl. wheel load measuring available. By the way, each one of the three variations can be equipped by power parts of the manufacturer KTM and by WIMMER own tuning parts. Already existing KTM vehicles can also be optimized by WIMMER, readily and with devotion to each thinkable customer's desire. ‹‹‹
