Studyâ€‰Away Dreams made possible Student Support Services 19 total SSS participants studied away from Luther during the 2012â€“13 academic year. 14 2 2 1 experienced J-term in China, Ecuador, England, Germany, Ireland, Japan, South Africa, Spain, and Switzerland. students took J-term as a chance to study in U.S. locations such as Hawaii and Holden Village, Washington. students expanded their horizons significantly with year-long experiences through the Nottingham program in England and a study abroad program in Japan. student related life-changing experiences from her spring semester abroad in Botswana, Africa. Making study away affordable “I planned ahead to save money and made it my goal to study abroad by J-term of my junior year. I didn’t get any scholarships, but I also didn’t have to get any loans; I was able to pay my WHOLE trip up front by check! I even had extra money for spending in Europe. YAY!” —Kara Osterman ’14, J-term 2013, English 239: In Frankenstein’s Footsteps in England, Switzerland, and Italy “Studying abroad gave me the opportunity to see the world from my own perspective, meet fascinating and diverse people, and take cheesy pictures with every statue I could! Every penny is definitely worth it.” —Aimee Lenth ’14, Nottingham Program 2012–13 (full year) “Associated Colleges of the Midwest’s study abroad program in Japan initially scared me—the price was intimidating and it was over 11 months long. In the end, it was my dream to go to this country. Through online and ACM rescources, I was hooked up with both the Gilman Scholarship and a scholarship from the Japanese government of $11,000. Scholarships, loans, the help of family, and determination made it possible.
