Editorial Manga fans, rejoice! The community is celebrating Kodansha's latest announcement; pieces from Naoko Takeuchi's beautiful artbooks, extremely popular and sought-after collectables, are going to see a world-wide reprint. Not only that, the Sailor Moon Art Book - a single book featuring Naoko's "most popular" pieces from the 5 original art books - is going to feature several "unpublished original drawings"! Fans are eagerly anticipating new content after hearing so little from the original creator. The book will be published in seven countries total, including Japan and the US, and each international copy will contain different, unique supplementary material. We at Lunacy can't wait to see it, and of course, talk all about it! The official companies aren't the only ones bringing the goods; Dead Moon Circus, a fan film focusing on the fourth story arc, released Part 1 of its film on YouTube last month. We have some news of our own this issue, too. Firstly, by request, Lunacy now has a Facebook page! It's very shiny and new right now, but In time we might even feature sneak-peeks and extra content exclusive to the Facebook page. This issue is also the first with a "partial theme". Now that the issue is monthly, it doesn't seem fair that some characters get every element of the magazine dedicated to them while others have to share. So, some issues are only half-themed, allowing us to cover a wider variety of topics and interests in the Sailor Moon community.

Music Song: Sailor Team no Theme (Sailor Team's Theme) CD: Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon S Movie Music Collection (Vocal) Memorial Music Box - Disc 9 (Instrumental) This is my first time recommending a song I hadn't heard before taking this position. It is really rewarding, to go through a collection of Sailor Moon music because you're stumped on what to write about, and find an absolute gem of a song. I fell in love with this as soon as I heard it, although it was the instrumental version I heard first. The main difference between the two is that instead of vocals, the instrumental version has an organ playing the melodies. I've started taking Rock Band up regularly (again), and if I had to make a "top 5 Rock Band wish list" for Sailor Moon, this song would be on it. (For the record, Carry On would be #1.) It sounds like it would be very fun to play - I can only imagine the feeling in the studio when they recorded this. I know, I know - most songs aren't recorded live with all parts playing at the same time. But it seems more fun and friendly to imagine it that way! Since both songs are essentially the same save for one part, I'll talk about the instrumental version first, then discuss the lyrics. The instrumentation for this song generally follows the style of TOEI's original anime score – bass, drums, guitar, organs, and a couple of synthesizer patches. My favorite part is the short square lead solo heading into to the first guitar solo. I'm just a sucker for squares - square waves sound really "cool" (as in temperature - but they are very impressive, too!) and fluid. The real instrument they most similarly resemble is the rock organ. Recording an instrumental version of Sailor Team no Theme made a great deal of sense, since the instrumentation is so engaging. They're pulling a lot of weight in this song. Now let's move on to the lyrics. The vocals are very catchy, and certainly add emotion to the song. It's obviously a battle theme for the Sailor Team - the four Inner Soldiers plus Moon - and the lyrics reflect that, although the verses are a little... well, weird.

"I ask you, shooting star, this time / Drown this guy in love, sleeping him away" I'm not the best at interpreting lyrics, but I could see this as a wish to defeat an enemy, as Sailor Moon's powers are based on the idea of love overcoming hate - this is a fight theme after all. The pre-chorus builds up to the big battle, making possible references to at least 3 of the Inners.

“We must raise up our spirits, we must go into battle / The thunder sounds, and the flame blazes, we have the boldness of love” The “thunder” could be Sailor Jupiter, and the “flame” Sailor Mars. “The boldness of love” could refer to Sailor Moon, Sailor Venus, both of them, or all of the Inners. Or, they might've just picked them because they sounded cool and don't reference anyone directly. The chorus is just generic encouragement, pleading the Sailor Soldiers to transform and fight. To be honest, the lyrics aren't that deep. But they're definitely a lot of fun to sing, and for all the fans who don't speak Japanese, isn't that the most important part? We care more about whether it's catchy, which it certainly is. The instrumentation is so good it'll urge you to gather some friends, buy some instruments, learn them, and immediately form a cover band. Or you could appreciate it for being a great theme song for any of the Inners - either way. Listen to both versions of this song online at the Lunacy Magazine Tumblr; check the #Music Recommendations tag for every song we feature! http://lunacymagazine.tumblr.com/tagged/Music-Recommendations

Shopping Merchandise Review Design Functionality Price Quality

Overall: Hi everyone! We will be reviewing the GE Sailor Moon Cosmetic Bag in this issue. I purchased mine from eBay for $14.49 before shipping. When I saw that it was a cosmetic bag I was super excited, since all my makeup is just scattered in my purse at the moment. Part of me was expecting a soft/squishable bag with a couple of slots to organize your makeup, but the more realistic part of me knew that wasn't going to happen. First lets talk about the design: it features some nice graphics, like the star locket and wand, but the pictures seem just randomly put together. The printing quality of the graphics is acceptable; when you look closely you can see the pixels but it's good enough. I gave functionality a score of 2 because this is more like a rigid, plastic pouch than cosmetic bag. The zipper is very hard to open and close which will be very inconvenient when you just want to quickly touch up your makeup. The material this bag is made of is extremely hard inflexible plastic - good luck trying to fit it in your purse! A couple of things you wouldn't know from GE's stock image: 1) The sides of this bag is clear which is great for easily seeing where something is. 2) It comes with a tiny "Sailor Moon" logo charm on the zipper.

Overall, if you're looking for a new cosmetics bag, I wouldn't recommend this. If you're just looking for a small plastic pouch to hold random items, then this is OK. It is definitely not a high quality item but it does feature a lot of nice images of Sailor Moon's accessories that you don't get to see much anywhere else.

Fanfiction Spotlight Thus far, I have made a point of making sure that every author I review comes from my personal Favorite Authors List. These are the authors whose updates I follow religiously, whose stories I reread on a rainy day, whose works compel me to write my own stories in hopes of one day matching them in brilliance. Today I would like to tell you about another fanfiction author on that list: a fine lady known as CharlieChaplin2. Normally, I would focus on just one story, but my indecisiveness means you get a two-forone deal in this issue. Let us start with the silliest of the two: The OTHER Princess Bride. Sailor Moon and The Princess Bride are surely a match made in heaven. Usagi and Buttercup are almost certainly twins separated at birth, and Mamoru and Wesley certainly share a love of masks and secret identities. If I had wanted to write up my own version of this crossover, I would have hammered out a few pages about true love, thrown in a few jokes about storming the castle and “mawwiage” and called it a day. When CharlieChaplin2 writes such a crossover, she constructs a 21 chapter, 51,186 word behemoth, complete with a map. Not only is this delightfully elaborate gem packed with character cameos--from Prince Diamond, lord of the land, to “Miracle” Malachite--but one can hardly read three lines without bursting out laughing.

“For Serena's part she did not think that he loved her back. He was always so quiet, so very in control. He never seemed weak in the knees, he never seemed to flush hotly when they were in close proximity to each other. He never once made a move on any of her subtle advances (and by subtle I mean things like yelling out "Oh no! I am standing under a garland of MISTLETOE! Farm Boy! Do you see that I am standing under a garland of mistletoe? What will happen if I continue to stand under this garland of Mistletoe, I wonder?" at the family Christmas dinner (Darien's response had been to reach up, unpin the mistletoe and move it a foot to the left so that she was no longer under it).” - The OTHER Princess Bride, Chapter 2, "In Which There is Romance"

Read The OTHER Princess Bride:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8026566/1/The-OTHER-Princess-Bride

Read Hooligans:

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5416004/1/Hooligans

If you have ever read The Princess Bride by S. Morgenstern (The “Good Parts” Version abridged by William Goldman, of course), then you will know that the story is full of Goldman’s hilarious tangent-filled asides, providing his personal commentary to the story. In this version, CharlieChaplin2 so completely captures Goldman’s rambling style and wit that at least one confused reviewer told her to stop going so off-topic and just get to the story. It makes me want to take the poor reader aside to explain that, honey, that is the story! But lest I mislead you into believing that multitudes of laughter are CharlieChaplin2’s only offering; allow me to introduce her slightly more serious and complicated in-progress story, Hooligans.

“Mamoru was standing in the rain. Like an idiot.”

- Hooligans, Chapter 1, "It Always Starts With Rain"

Like all great stories, the premise is not an uncommon one: Mamoru goes overseas to university and winds up meeting the Four Kings from the Dark Kingdom, reincarnated as regular people. Also like all great stories, Hooligans veers decidedly away from the typical telling of this premise. Set in the UK, the story is as much about the five Inner soldiers as it is about Mamoru. Because Usagi could not bear to be apart from her true love for long, after graduation, she followed him to his new life, bringing her guardians with her. Now the six of them struggle to come to terms with a new culture, new language, and four rowdy, ridiculously good-looking new men in their lives.

“Maybe it was the horrible British weather. Maybe it was the fact that Mako hadn't had a good fight in months. Her frustration was building, which was why the attack on Rei had been such great news – that wasn't to say that she liked the idea of her friend being in danger, but it meant a return of sorts to the way things had been: that freedom which came with melting into the element she controlled, her body and soul completely free to release the power welled up inside of her...” - Hooligans, Chapter 4, "Apple Tapped"

Hooligans is funny, but it is populated by characters who are deeply complex. Every character is heavily laden by emotional baggage, and none are safe from poor decision-making or an embarrassing turn of fate. This story is still in progress, but at over 94,000 words already, there is more than enough to keep us all occupied until the next thrilling chapter. Or peruse more of CharlieChaplin2's works;

welcome to the

DEAD MOON CIRCUS Exploring the plot of the fourth story arc, SuperS / Dream, the Australian fan production Dead Moon Circus released their film's phenomenal first installment on YouTube in early October. We got to interview director James Peniata and Amy's actress Madi Busch about their adventures on set and behind the scenes. LM: What inspired you to channel your passion for Sailor Moon into making a live action movie? JP: I fell in love with performance and film making naturally progressed from that. I studied at a film academy and after graduation I proceeded to make my first 2 feature films. I was having a really bad day at one point and the thing that cheers me up is to watch a few episodes of Sailor Moon. It just reattaches me to my childhood and helps me to mentally stable myself... 'Moonie Meditation' I guess you could call it. While doing this I realised that I actually have some of the tools I need to make a really low budget Sailor Moon fanfilm. My effects work may not be very 'George Lucas' ... yet... but there is NO way I was going to let that stop me. (Laughs) LM: Most fan-made re-imaginings of Sailor Moon, be they comics, stories, movies, etc. choose to retell the story from the very beginning. What made you choose to leap in at the fourth story arc, SuperS? JP: I honestly felt that there were already a lot of fanfilms retelling that arc. All of them doing so in such different and inventive ways. I personally have always loved the Dream arc... from the characters to the story. It was dark and very much like a twisted fairytale. I knew that Moonies from around the world would appreciate the variety of fanfilms that have been provided for them to continue loving Sailor Moon.

LM: What was the funniest on-set or behindthe-scenes moment for you? MB: Whilst on set I grew really close with Serena (Venus) and Nay (Mars) so anytime we would shoot together they always had me laughing! The funniest moments were probably whenever we shot out in public and would be walking around the streets in our Sailor Soldier outfits - the public didn't know what hit them! (Laughs) JP: One of the FUNNIEST moments was when we were shooting one of the fight scenes, one of our actresses (who shall remain nameless) accidentally placed her hand in dog poo. And while she was more concerned about trying to wash her hand I found it hilarious that you could see her finger print in the poop. Surely enough she simply washed her hand, rinsed her glove... and continued with the day's work. LM: What's your favourite scene from Part 1? MB: The fight scene!! I loved kicking Tigers Eye's butt... sorry Corey! (Laughs) It was a lot of hard work so I'm glad it all payed off. JP: My favourite scene from part 1 is definitely the heart moving scene between the Amazon trio as Fisheye dies. Corey Mills (Tigers Eye), Van Parks (Fisheye) and Andy Minh Trieu (Hawks Eye) did an AMAZING job on creating such a heartbreaking moment between 3 blood brothers being ripped apart.

LM: What was the most challenging aspect of working on the film series? JP: Honestly, having to do 90% of the crew work was exhausting. Many times it was simply me and 2-3 actors at 3am shooting a fight scene outside OR against a green screen. MB: The hardest part was definitely trying to film Dead Moon Circus whilst completing my HSC (final graduating exams). Some days I would go straight from a full day of shooting to an exam and vice versa. But luckily the crew and cast were so understanding and the other Sailor Soldiers would help me study on set! Everyone was such a family, it was beautiful. LM: So it sounds like what you were going through in real life could definitely be related to Amy! Did it help shape your performance? MB: Everyone knows Amy as the brainy girl of the bunch, this was easy to relate to as throughout filming I was studying. I could relate to Amy's problem solving qualities, and hard working attitude because I was trying to do the same thing! Throughout part 1 there are several scenes where Amy is studying and has lots of books with her – it's actually quite funny because these were times that I had my own notes with me so I could learn them! LM: Had you always been a fan of Sailor Moon? MB: As I was only 18 when we filmed Dead Moon Circus, Sailor Moon wasn't something I was that familiar with because it wasn't really on when I was growing up! Although I came across the audition, and once I got the part of Sailor Mercury I did a lot of research and watched a lot of the series - It wasn't long before I became a huge fan!! LM: A few of the characters have been changed a little from what we're used to. Were alterations to characterisation a conscious decision, or more of a result of how the actors interpreted the roles? JP: It was very much a conscious decision. I discussed with my actors beforehand what I was looking for in style and feeling from each character. I provided as much information and back story as possible. And then I allowed them to explore their roles, under my guidance of course. I was very adamant about altering certain things to fit the style of the film I was making but overall I am very proud of my cast.

LM: There's a pretty strong focus on romance in Dead Moon Circus! Rei with Chad, Lita with Andrew, and of course Serena and Darien. Mina's even got her eye set on Sean. Was it a goal to expand on so many couples, or a happy coincidence? How do they get along offscreen? And will Chad ever catch a break? JP: I am an avid believer of Romance. So I tried to introduce as many romantic stories as possible. I felt it was interesting to see how each character approaches the subject of love and I definitely had fun writing some of the more playful and yet PAINFULLY awkward flirtatious moments. (Laughs) Off screen they were just as sweet towards each other. In fact a certain couple actually had quite a few people quietly asking if they were ONLY acting... or ACTUALLY dating. These two will remain nameless. And to answer you last question... the romance between Rei and Chad will definitely build, provided I get the chance to come back and make another fanfilm based off of another arc.

"I really wanted to kick some butt so that the public would remove the stereotype of Amy being the 'useless one' of the group."

LM: In the end, Amy's the only one without a romantic interest. Do you think it bothers her at all? MB: This is the one thing where I feel like I can really relate to Amy, she's not concerned with boys and doesn't let it distract her from her study. In the same way I concentrate so hard on my acting and my career that I don't want to be distracted by boys or other things. LM: As the director, what were you most looking forward to incorporating into Dead Moon Circus? JP: Definitely the Amazons. I absolutely love how insane they are. The fight scenes are also one of my favorite aspects of the film. I was definitely excited to incorporate a darker element to the Moonie universe as well. LM: On that note, Amy really got to kick some butt in part 1! How difficult was it to shoot the fight scene? MB: The fight scene was so much fun! Myself and Corey (who plays Tigers Eye) trained with Chai (Sean) and really perfected every movement. Having had a background in gymnastics and cheerleading, we tried to combine some martial arts moves with gymnastic skills to really have an awesome fight scene. I really wanted to kick some butt so that the public would remove the stereotype of Amy being the “useless one of the group.

LM: To end on a sweet note - James, you put a lot of time and effort into this production, and the payoff was phenomenal. It's clearly a labour of love. What is it about Sailor Moon that makes you like it so much? What keeps you a fan after all this time? JP: The thing that I love about Sailor Moon is the amount of inner strength she has. Growing up I was always so inspired by the endless love and support Darien and Serena had for one another. Fighting for justice and following your heart and dreams has always been a main aspect of my life because of Sailor Moon.

Japanese Focus With this issue of Japanese Focus, I'm going to rock your world, and explore points I believe are being ignored when people make English translations for the term “Shitennou” – the name that is used throughout Sailor Moon to refer to Queen Beryl’s four underlings. I’m here to tell you I don't think it should be translated as “Four Heavenly Kings”. Which will shock the heck out of anybody with a little knowledge of Japanese who can read basic kanji, since the title is made up of these characters:

四天王 SHI • TEN • OU four • heaven • king

At first glance, the correct English translation for this word seems like a nobrainer. But there is a lot of religious, historical, and cultural significance attached to this word which merits explanation. This specific combination of kanji - a "compound" - was originally conceived in China after Buddhism spread to this region from India during the 5th century BCE. This compound was coined to describe the Lokapala (sanskrit); four beings who were the gods of the cardinal directions (North, South, East, and West). These gods are also known as the “Four Devas”, and the translation for this term from sanskrit varies across Asian countries. In Japan, the word for the Four Devas became “shitennou” – they borrowed the same characters the Chinese used after China brought Buddhism to Japan – and the word became religious terminology. When you read Japanese Buddhist texts, and the word “shitennou” appears, it is almost always translated into English as “the Four Devas”. The direct translation of “Four Heavenly Kings” sounds unnatural to native speakers of English, and in fact that phrasing almost never appears in professional or academic translations.

Additionally, a direct translation of "Shitennou" as “Four Heavenly Kings” ignores a monumental event in Japanese history. During the Tokugawa period, there were a few famous generals under Tokugawa Iyeyasu who were referred to as the “Shitennou”, because their military adventures were considered so amazing that they must have been inspired by the gods. Since there were four of them, and since they each controlled four “sections” of Japan under direct military rule of the Shogun Iyeyasu, the word “shitennou” in Japanese also became synonymous with these famous generals. My opinion is that the Shitennou in Sailor Moon are modeled after these Tokugawa Iyeyasu generals, rather than after the Four Devas of Buddhist ideology. Since the Shitennou in Sailor Moon are of a high rank in a military-like setting, both when under a Queen in the 20th/21st Century and a Prince in the Silver Millennium - who is a military figure of the Earth and notably not a religious one - I translate it as “Four Generals”. Plus, incidentally enough, in various Sailor Moon canons the Shitennou are each given a “zone” on the Earth that they “rule over”. Jadeite is the Asia / Nepal area zone ruler, Nephrite is the North America / Canada area zone ruler, Zoicite is the Europe / Switzerland area zone ruler, and Kunzite is the Middle East / Turkey area zone ruler. Since they don’t rule in any religious capacity in these zones but rather militarily, this further supports my theory that “shitennou” should be distanced from the idea of Buddhist religion and connected more with Iyeyasu's famous Japanese generals. So there you have it! I hope you found this segment enjoyable. Until next time!

How-To

... make a Jupiter style lunch bag!

Makoto's always got a big lunch with her - easily enough to satisfy two - and it's always in her super cute and immediately recognisable lunch bag. Use her colour scheme or invent your own to make a beautiful and unique "kinkachu". What you'll need: ♥ Fabric in your choice of pattern/colour ♥ Fabric cord ♥ Thick, durable ribbon ♥ Two buttons or beads of any design ♥ Glue/clear nail polish to seal cord

This tutorial is based on one from My Bento Lunch @ Blogspot. Link:

http://mybentolunch.blogspot.com.au/2008/04/bento-kinkachu-tutorial.html

Fold your material so that it's doubled, and mark out a square where the bottom is on the fabric fold. The average size for the square is about 10-12 inches. If you want a smaller one for desserts or kids' lunches, just adjust the size; the one in this tutorial is pretty big, to fit two large lunchboxes for main and dessert, just like Makoto. Whatever size square you make, add on about an extra 6 inches for the frilly part above the draw string cord. Clearly mark the 6 inch point with pencil. Hem the four corners of the bag, and the long sides up to the 6 inch point. It's not necessary to hem anything else, but hemming the shorter sides may make it easier for you in the long run. Now, turning the fabric inside-out, sew the sides of the bag together, leaving the 6 inches at the top. When done, fold the bag so that the seams are in the middle on the front and back, making triangular points at the top. Measure 2 inches down from the top of the triangle, and draw a line across in pencil. Sew across this line. Sewing the triangles gives the bag a flat bottom, which is essential in a bento bag to ensure your lunch stays horizontal. Depending on the size of your bag, you may need to make your triangles bigger/smaller.

Now we sew in the space for the drawstring cord, which will also form the bag's cute ruffles at the top. Fold the top of your 6-inch fabric down enough for the cord to fit neatly inside. Then, fold the fabric a second time so that the the top of the flap is level with the top of the bag's opening. Following this diagram, you will be sewing closed the first fold whilst attachingit to the second. Your bag is more or less finished; now for the bows. As in the diagrams below, make a loop with the ribbon, then pinch it together to make a bow shape. Hold it together with a couple of stitches. Sew your buttons or beads to the front of the bows, and then sew them onto the front of the bag, one below the other.

Hint: If your ribbon frays when cut, and hemming is not an option, try sealing the edges with a dab of clear nail polish. Thread the cord through the drawstring loop and tie a knot on each end. Hint: To seal the ends of your cord to stop fraying, you can use hot glue, super glue, clear nail polish, etc. Stop it from fraying before you can apply it by wrapping sticky tape around the cord before cutting through it. You're done! To keep your bag closed tight, just tie your cord in a bow. Try experimenting with different fabric, ribbon and button combinations.

Poisoning Friends

In honour of Jupiter's birthday, we asked you...

What would you do if you met Sailor Jupiter for a day? ... and here's what you told us!

"What I would do if I met Sailor Jupiter for a day? I'd ask her how to be strong. I looked up to her a lot when I was a child, and for the longest time, she was my favorite. And the one thing that stuck in my mind was just her strength, especially after learning her backstory. I would just ask her how to be strong like her. " - agrotera-thanatos.tumblr

"i would totally take mako-chan tree climbing."

- anonymous

"We would make a really, really epic feast for dinner and bake enough goods to keep us in breakfast for days, and she’d help me go over all my recipes to make them diabetic-safe for my roomie, and she’d teach me how to grow roses in my windowboxes. And then she’d turn me down very sweetly when I confessed my love. XD"

Like a duck swimming

"I’d totally ask her how to live on my own. I can’t cook, clean, or remember to eat on a regular basis thanks to my utter lack of survival instincts, so I rely on others to do it for me. Mako’s such a brilliant homemaker (unlike me) so I’d ask her how she does it. Also, I’d definitely ask for a bit of judo training. Not much I can do without a taser with my tiny arms, so her tactical fighting style would be fantastic to learn."

- bowl-homunculus.tumblr

"Oh jeez, I’d have to have her help me write up an entire recipe book and teach me how to be a decent cook. I try really hard but sometimes…it’s embarrassing. One time I left some steaks in the broiler and forgot about them for an hour. Even the starving stray cats wouldn’t eat it! I even burned peas once."

- sunriseovervenus.tumblr.com

Burned... peas...? "Mako-chan and I both like trees/plants a lot, so I think I would like to talk to her about plants and gardening. Maybe she could give me tips on making a garden I can handle even with my pollen allergy!" - starry-dreamer.tumblr

"First, I would thank her for being the one heroine in my childhood that I loved and needed the most, forever inspiring me and drawing strength from even today. Then after that, I'd buy her a round of drinks and pick up some cute guys with her. *raises glass* Here's to you Sailor Jupiter, the scout with the most talent in many ways and whom a fellow Huge Schoolgirl can always look up to!" - morphississ.tumblr
