Editorial If the only way to start last issue's Editorial was with "thank you", then the start to this issue should be an apology. As many of you know, a serious virus targeting email accounts forced us to delay the October 1st issue of Lunacy. We sincerely thank you for your understanding, patience and support during this time. But now we're back, with a double-themed issue for the month of October! After a lot of discussion, the team behind Lunacy has decided that it would be in our best interest to switch to a monthly rather than bimonthly publication schedule. That means we can focus on quality over quantity! Moonlight Real Girl CD box set Venus's dream has always been to become an idol; in the 2003-4 TOEI live action series Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, or "PGSM", she achieved it. In this modern reimagining of the original series, "Minako Aino" finally became a household name. She racked up more than twice as many image songs as any other character in the series, many of which were introduced and featured as a part of the plot - most notably C'est la Vie, a pun sounding exactly like "Sailor V" to a Japanese speaker. The tunes might have been standard infectious bubblegum pop, but their real worth shone through in the lyrics, exploring and exposing more intricate aspects of Minako's motives and characterisation. This is what I'll be focusing on. PGSM is an aspect of the fandom that woefully few fans have experienced, and the twists and developments of each character should really be discovered by oneself. So I'll try to avoid spoilers.

"I won't show you my tears. This is a battle within myself." Kiss!² Bang!² appeared late in the series; after briefly deciding to quit being an idol and focus more on her duties as a Sailor Soldier, Minako is convinced by the others to pursue her "normal" dreams with as much dedication, and she returns to show business by recording this new song. It's also, happily, my favourite PGSM Minako song. Casting Ayaka Komatsu in the role of a pop star may have been ill advised, as singing is not her strong suit. She had purportedly never sung before the role, and speaking frankly, it shows. Many fans have noted that she has a tendency to speak her lines rather than sing them. That being said, Kiss!² Bang!² suits her abilities and voice. It is a steady, rhythmic yet feisty song with a pitch range staying firmly in Ayaka's "safe" territory. It puts more of a focus on the tune and lets her vocals coast along.

Thematically, it's often said that Minako in PGSM is much more serious than her anime or manga counterparts. I think she's just been shaped by different circumstances. PGSM Minako is - to be intentionally vague - very, very sick. This has made her outward appearance very stoic. But there are moments in the series where you can see the playful attitude we normally associate with Venus shining through; this song is one of them.

"Kiss! Kiss! Love is precious. Bang! Bang! But it's like you're smothering me." "Kiss! Kiss!" she coos in the chorus, spinning something sweet. Then, "Bang! Bang!" She cheerfully shoots you down with a bitter chaser. Many of Minako's more light-hearted songs are such playful, atypical, almost bored observations, seeking more than the "traditional" romance. Kiss!² Bang!² is comparatively light on any deeply introspective lyrics - it reflects an optimistic point in the series - but it's not devoid of them. This song is the climax of her decision to continue juggling her illness, her duties as a Sailor Soldier, and her career as an idol. Accordingly, some of the lyrics seem to hint at these struggles, particularly her health. "I'll overcome my pain and protect you," she muses, once again palming off a letter to her Princess as an anonymous love song. It was, after all, her friendship which inspired her to keep fighting her sickness, no matter how dire the odds.

Overall: Hi everyone! We will be reviewing the much anticipated GE Star Locket necklace in this issue. I purchased mine from circlered.com for $11.99 each before shipping. When I received them, I was quite disappointed. The packaging wasn't pleasing to the eye at all - GE just wrapped the chain around the tag a few times and shoved them into little baggies. Before it went on sale, GE did state "due to manufacturing difficulties a few light scratches may be present on necklace" and that it was "very minor and not obtrusive in any way". I found this to be an understatement. With a collector mindset I bought 3, thinking I was going to keep one sealed and the other two to wear all the time. All 3 of mine had major flaws; there are brown spots/stains all over. Some stains were circular, some were lines that looked like cracks all over the top. When someone asked them how this happened, they replied; "It could either have been during production, transit or any number of things. We do not have the answer." In the end... we have no solid answers or cleaning methods, and all my necklaces still have those brown stains! Stains aside, the design is quite pretty, and I'm really glad it's a glossy, shiny gold. It does not open or play music, which is expected since it's just cheap costume jewelry. I've had the necklace for around a month now but I've yet to wear it! The reason being... the bail! I can't think of another way to describe it besides cheap and badly made. The back of the bail, the side that will be touching your body, is quite sharp and sticks out. It actually scraped my hand and left a mark - it will for sure snag and ruin your sweater. I also heard from other collectors that the bail opens up easily and off goes your star locket pendant! Overall, I have to say I'm disappointed, especially since GE kept delaying its release, knowing how important it is to fans and wanting to make sure everything was done right. Maybe if I take away the anticipation and sentimental value, and judge it for the cheap mass-produced necklace that it is, then maybe it's not so bad. In the end though, regardless of the flaws, I still recommend getting one. It is the fabled Star Locket after all.

... make Garnet Orb cookies!

Many of you may have seen this trick before, especially around Christmas - called "Stained Glass Cookies", these biscuits have see-through panels of melted candy that look just like... well, stained glass windows. This twist on that old favourite shows you how to make delicious and beautiful treats inspired by Pluto's Talisman; that symbolic jewel the Garnet Orb. What you'll need: ♥ Ingredients for a basic sugar cookie recipe with dough that does not rise or spread much after baking (see link below) ♥ Red-coloured hard candy ♥ Cachous (silver decorative baking balls) ♥ Yellow M&Ms, Smarties, or any other small round yellow candy pieces ♥ Purple & yellow food dye ♥ Icing sugar ♥ 2 heart shaped cookie cutters, one larger than the other ♥ 2 circular cookie cutters, one larger than the other, with the largest fiting in the smaller heart cutter ♥ Baking paper If you have a sugar cookie recipe that you know and love, and you know that it keeps its shape after baking without much spreading/rising, then feel free to use it; the results will be the same, so do what works best for you. Be aware of how many cookies this recipe makes, and scale your own ingredient quantities appropriately. Make sure you add the purple food colouring to your dough! The key to achieving the look is the right size and shape cookie cutters. You will need two heartshaped cookie cutters, one smaller than the other, with a reasonable size difference. You'll also need two circular cookie cutters, with a similar size difference, where the larger circle can fit within the smaller heart. Here's a diagram; Pink lines: Larger cutters Green lines: Smaller cutters Pink circle fits within green heart. You can find sets of incremental cookie cutters in popular shapes like hearts at most craft or cooking stores, and online practically everywhere. Your circle shapes don't have to be cookie cutters! Look for bottle caps, glasses, jars, etc. that are the right diameter.

Make sure that the cutters you use will leave a cookie that's thick enough for you to hold without it breaking. Cutting the shapes is the trickiest bit - and it's not even that tricky! Roll out your dough and cut out your larger heart shape. Don't cut out anything else yet. Place the heart on your baking tray with baking paper now; take two small balls of dough and stick them to the top of your heart, squashing them flat and slightly into the dough, to make the smaller heart at the top of the Orb. Put a cachous in the top and bottom as in the photo above. Now, make the "nests" for your yellow candy to go when the cookies are cooked. There are two ways to do this; Make little dents in the dough that your candy will sit in, or stick more flattened dough balls on the side that the candy sits on. Make two on each edge; set the candy aside. Left: Apply smaller shapes before cutting out the middle. Right: An example of dents, and of the biscuit just before baking.

Now cut out the smaller heart, and without removing any dough, cut out your two circles from the smaller circle. Now you can remove the excess dough, so that you are left with a hollow heart with a hollow circle inside. Crush up your hard candy in a bag, and place the pieces in the hollow circle. Bake as per the recipe. The candy should melt to make a window! If your window looks too thin, put on another layer of crushed candy and bake again. When completely cool, remove from tray and stick M&Ms in place with yellow dyed icing sugar.

Fanfiction Spotlight It is Minako month here at Lunacy, and so there is only one author on whom I can call. Okay, well, there are many, many amazing authors on whom I could call for Minako month, but the first who will always spring to mind for me is VenusOrbit1, or VO1 for short. If you have spent any amount of time in the "Senshi/Shitennou" pairing community in the past ten years, you will know and love (and maybe even fear) her name. Most will know her for her legendary story, As We Were, which told the story of the five Inner Soldiers, Mamoru, and Four Kings as American college students. Conflicts with monsters were interspersed with parties and beer pong, and love and friendship blossomed in the midst of drunken hazes. VO1 is most known for her humor - dark and biting and usually merciless - and also her talent for smut. Minors beware - do not make the mistake of sitting down to read a VO1 story if you're not looking for something rated R or higher, because this is a world of sex, drugs, and occasional sparkly powers and destiny and stuff. What you may be less familiar with is VO1’s more recent, more mature fanfic, Economics. In this story, she takes the cast of Sailor Moon and rearranges them into a dark romantic comedy the likes of which Hollywood only wishes it could envision. There are no magical powers or legendary tales of destiny here, and there is no need for them in a world of overworked stock brokers and eco-warriors and burlesque dancers-turned-artists. Do not be afraid that it has lost its roots, though: Mina still has a white cat, even if it does not talk, Makoto still bakes, Darien is still a decent guy hiding behind a jerk facade, and Serena writes stories about bunnies. In this story, Kevin (who, if the name didn't tip you off, is Kunzite), a successful but lonely businessman, has been sent a birthday gift by his delightfully snarky and pretentious best friend, a talent agent by the name of Darien. The gift, of course, turns out to be a private show with one of Darien’s former clients, a starving artist by the name of Mina whose paintings are not selling, but who has not forgotten her years as a burlesque dancer. They ended up folded together again on the sidewalk, and somehow Kevin managed to hail a cab, the cabbie giving them a long, distasteful stare as Mina practically jumped in after and pulled Kevin's body to her, planting hard kisses on his neck. Kevin pulled something out of his pocket and pushed it through the slits in the clear plastic partition. "For your trouble," he gasped, as Mina pushed him against the door and attacked him again. The cabbie pulled it through, checked out the numeral in the corner of the bill, and raised his eyebrows. "Thank you, my friend. You can make as many babies as you want to back there." - Economics, Chapter 3

I urge everybody with a love of Sailor Moon to read through all of VO1’s works - including the many short stories and side-takes located on her writing LiveJournal - but Economics stands solidly on its own as a tale of love, friendship, and substance abuse.

Japanese Focus This issue, we’re tackling the hard stuff. I’m going to do my best to explain one of the most common - and most difficult to translate - terms found in the Sailor Moon meta-series: “Maboroshi no Ginzuishou”; “the Phantom Silver Crystal”.

幻の銀水晶 For decades, the proper English translation of this phrase has been under intense debate and scrutiny. Let’s discuss why. Anyone who has followed the North American versions of the Sailor Moon manga and anime will find that professional translators have come to no consensus of how “maboroshii” should be translated.

Fortunately for the rest, there is some background information that points to the correct meaning of the word “maboroshii”. It is not common knowledge, but the creator of Sailor Moon, Naoko Takeuchi, was first and foremost a professional chemist. During her studies as an undergraduate at the Kyoritsu Chemical College in Tokyo, Naoko made her manga debut with the one-shot series “Love Call” in 1985. Because Naoko Takeuchi is a trained chemist, tons scientific terminology, mineralogical references, and chemical names have wound up in her works – especially in Sailor Moon. Ever noticed that the majority of Sailor Moon's villains are named after minerals or gemstones? That's just another facet of Naoko's influences and background.

In some versions you’ll find “illusory”. In others you’ll find “mystical”. In still others you’ll see Usagi’s crystal described as “legendary” - which is way off base. Needless to say, there has been little to no consistency for any of the professional translations used, and in some cases, the "translations" of the word are in fact completely inaccurate. This inconsistency has sparked a number of debates, especially among fan translators of the series. When so many official sources can’t get this term right, how can anyone else be expected to? “Maboroshii” has had Japanese to English translators scratching their heads for decades, and it’s almost never handled well. Luckily, the rest of the phrase describing Usagi’s crystal isn’t as difficult to translate.

水晶 The last characters, “suishou”, mean "crystal". Together, "ginzuishou" means "silver crystal". That’s easy.

The picture above is of a “phantom crystal”. When a crystal forms around another pre-existing crystalline structure, like quartz, it is known as a phantom crystal; so called because you can see the “ghost” of the previous crystal inside the newer one. Phantom crystals are a very beautiful and a rare treasure - it is likely that during Naoko Takeuchi’s studies she came across the phenomenon, especially since she had a keen interest in mineralogy.

That being said, the term for “phantom crystal” in Japanese when referring to this phenomenon is not "Maboroshi no Ginzuishou", but this:

ファントム水晶 “FANTOMU suishou”. The highlighted characters say "phantom” – written with Japanese characters known as katakana, used mostly for writing foreign words. So it’s hard to argue that Naoko Takeuchi absolutely named Usagi’s “Maboroshi no Ginzuishou” after the phenomenon of phantom crystals, since she didn’t use the standard term for the scientific phenomenon. But it’s extremely likely that she intended to make a reference to it.

幻 The problem with translating "maboroshii", and the reason English speakers can't just default to a literal translation, is that it has all kinds of meanings in English depending on the context in which it is used. It can mean phantom, illusion, dream, vision, or fantasy. And in the case of Usagi’s crystal, the context that would help a translator determine which definition o use is left ambiguous. Most translators find themselves at an impasse; should they go ahead and translate the word as “phantom” because of the existing mineralogical reference? Should you drop the word “maboroshii” altogether due to the difficulty translating it to English? Or should you use an already established official "translation" for the word, even if the meaning is not the same? There are no linguistic clues in Sailor Moon itself to point you in the right direction. Nobody speaks about the crystal in any way that adds clarification to the meaning. If you didn’t know that the series creator was a chemist who loved to study minerals, you’d be thrown for a loop.

While I was doing my own independent translation of the Sailor Moon manga, I really struggled with how to deal with “maboroshii”. In fact, in the end, I decided to drop it from my English translation of the phrase altogether, because I couldn’t find a good way to deal with it. No matter how much I liked the romantic aspects of “Phantom Silver Crystal”, I just didn’t have the evidence to support why that translation was better or more accurate than, say, “Visionary Silver Cyrstal”. That's because at the time, I was unaware of the “phantom crystal” phenomenon. I would guess that most of the professional translators involved with Sailor Moon are similarly ignorant of rare crystal formations. Now that I am revisiting this term a few years later, with more data about Naoko Takeuchi’s background, I really believe that the proper translation for Maboroshi no Ginzuishou ought to be “Phantom Silver Crystal”. Sure, it’s circumstantial evidence at best, but the words "phantom" and "maboroshi" are roughly equivalent in this sense. I believe that Naoko Takeuchi intentionally used 幻 (maboroshi), a kanji meaning "phantom”, as a pun and reference to the mineralogical phenomenon of phantom crystals.
