Urban lighting design Architecture lights

Editorial

Colofon

Welcome to the 2021 autumn edition of eLuminous! This year has seen the world, the lighting community included, tentatively take steps back towards what we call normality.

Published by Signify – High Tech Campus 48, 5656 AE Eindhoven, The Netherlands www.signify.com/pioneersoflight

We were all shocked in 2020 when our cities fell silent and our busy streets emptied. Our urban areas slumped into an unprecedented period of quietness. This did not stop the lighting community from demonstrating its ability to innovate further. This month’s magazine focuses on the urban environment, with Signify’s new Urban Styling approach coming into effect through our new modular range, UrbanFlex.

Editor in chief Vincent Laganier Steering committee Anissa Abbou, Jaap Schuuring, Marinelle van den Munckhof Editing Point 6 Graphic design concept one/one

We also have webinars delving into the design qualities of 3D printed lighting within retail spaces, absorbing case studies, and featured products from all Signify brands. Enjoy and stay safe!

Project 1

Holland Casino Venlo Venlo, The Netherlands

The casino’s façade is comprised of a grid of glass disks and smaller metal elements. The metal elements have a duotone coating, which makes the building appear to change color as visitors move around the structure, and projects a vibrant image during the day.

© Living Projects

Scheduled to open in late 2021, Holland Casino Venlo is certain to achieve instant ‘landmark’ status. Designed by MVSA Architects, the casino was constructed in the form of a Dutch flower that rises from the middle of the structure and extends naturally to the surrounding landscape.

At night, spectacular façade lighting provides an unforgettable experience for passersby and casino guests, thanks to LEDs located behind each large glass disc. The objective of the lighting design was to make the unique building highly visible from a distance, serving as a welcoming gateway to The Netherlands from the nearby German border.

Color Kinetics FlexElite RGBW (5,760 nodes) were mounted behind the glass discs to illuminate the façade, while 196 Color Kinetics ColorGraze MX4 Powercore fixtures light the top of the building. The dynamic color-changing lighting delivers a breathtaking display during the darker hours and emphasizes the casino’s flower-shaped structure. The light effects can be easily adjusted to reflect different themes. Interact Landmark provides secure remote monitoring and management of the fully programmable lighting system.

Creating a landmark of tomorrow with dynamic lines of light PwC Building Diegem, Belgium

Project 2

Project 2

PwC Building Diegem, Belgium Lighting for the innovative new building is designed to add value, leverage its high-traffic location, and enhance the architecture by providing elegance, coherence, and branding. This was achieved by making a bold statement on the façade with lines of dynamic, color-changing light that accent the structure’s architectural form.

© Ghelamco

Renown real estate investor, Ghelamco, constructed a new 28000 m², 12-floor office building for PwC (Pricewaterhouse Coopers) to create an iconic and highly visible landmark located next to the Brussels Airport and enroute to NATO and European Parliament. Completed in July 2021, the building was created as a visionary office of tomorrow, focused on quality, sustainability, and the well-being of its employees. Sustainable materials were used for the construction of the building to minimize the ecological footprint of the company.

Project 2

PwC Building Diegem, Belgium Color Kinetics products were selected for their reliability and ability to perfectly achieve the intendeddesign. Strands of iColor Flex MX gen2 (66 nodes) embedded in the profile of the building contour the architecture with a continuous line of light. The end-to-end the lighting solution is controlled by ActiveSite and powered by Data Enabler Pro.

© Ghelamco

Signify delivered a turnkey project and managed service contract for the next 10 years. Moreover, the spectacular exterior lighting has established the PwC Building as a highly recognizable area landmark reflecting the forward-looking goals of the project.
