Transforming elevator lobbies into comfortable spaces

Ogilvy is an award-winning integrated creative agency founded back in 1948 with offices located across the world. The Nanjing office in China is situated inside a 43-floor super high-rise building. A new lighting solution for the Ogilvy Mansion’s bottom floor elevator lobbies was designed to create an inviting and comfortable space for employees and visitors that also reduced energy usage. They needed high-quality lighting that adjusted to the different times of day and delivered a pleasant visual experience.

Lighting designer Pang Lei selected Color Kinetics OneSpace Prefab panels for the project to create a smooth, clean appearance where the light source is completely hidden. 21 OneSpace Prefab panels were integrated into the ceiling of each of the two elevator lobbies, arranged 5cm apart in three rows to align with the shape of the wall and maintain the existing spatial pattern.

The tuneable and dimmable panels are quickly and easily adjusted. Users can set light levels for different times of the day, with certain settings helping to reduce energy consumption. Plus, employees and visitors are protected from glare at all times. When important guests visit or when it’s dark outside, the panels are set at 100% brightness to simulate daylight. During peak hours, panels are switched to 50%. And, during off-peak hours, the panels are kept at 50% brightness to make significant energy savings.

A glass wall has been transformed into an immersive feature in the lobby that invites pedestrians inside the hotel and provides a unique guest experience. The new roof lighting draws attention to the hotel from afar and establishes it as a prominent area landmark.

Inspired by maritime culture, the distinctive coastal influence is clear the moment you arrive at the 30-story Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel. Located adjacent to the San Diego Convention Center, the hotel features newly renovated guest rooms that are authentically ‘San Diego’ in their design.

Featured in the hotel lobby is a 12 x 60m (40 x 200ft) wall comprised of more than 400 1 x 2m (3 x 6ft) panels of beautifully frosted glass, each weighing 100lbs. Color Kinetics’ partner, Pro-Cal Lighting, designed, programmed, and installed a new LED lighting system for the glass wall and also a unique architectural feature on the roof.

Working overnight to avoid disruption and provide a seamless guest experience, over 7,000 Color Kinetics Flex LMX gen2 nodes were individually mapped on the Color Kinetics Light System Manager gen5. They were then installed in each of the wall’s glass panels. Color Kinetics Vaya Linear MP RGB fixtures 10° x 50° lens were used to illuminate the roof detail.

Using Interact Landmark, hotel staff can remotely control, manage, and monitor the rooftop and lobby lighting, substantially reducing on-site time and providing custom lighting effects for key customer events.

When we visit hotels, cafes, restaurants and supermarkets, classrooms and offices, we breathe, talk and laugh — as well as cough and sneeze. With the new measures to prevent the coronavirus from spreading, our way of living has changed completely. For example, we now wash our hands frequently, keep distance between each other and make sure to disinfect surfaces. But what about disinfecting the the air? It’s a problem that the Director of the Sonepar Connect agency in Reims was keen to solve.

“It’s my responsibility to bring an extra layer of protection to our friends, collaborators and clients who come to meet us every day in our office. For this purpose, we have chosen to install Philips UV-C disinfection upper air luminaires to treat the air and disinfect it.”

Sonepar Connect Reims, France

Innovations in use Projects

Philips UV-C disinfection upper air luminaires continuously disinfect the air that flows through the upper areas of the room, thanks to natural convection (or air circulation). This also ensures that the disinfected air flows back to the lower part of the room. The UV-C rays are controlled by specific reflectors and the louvre design, which allows disinfection of air while daily activities can continue safely below.
