MULE DAY 2010 – www.muleday.com

From The Editor

Here in Middle Tennessee as the trees and flowers start to bloom, it's usually a sign that Mule Day is near. As the weeks of anticipation turn to days, you can feel the excitement bursting throughout this vibrant southern town. Locals and visitors alike look forward to some good 'ol fashioned fun with family, friends and of course the occasional mule. I have seen the growth of Mule Day in many ways throughout my years on the Mule Day Committee. Our information guide has grown from a foldable flyer in 1974 to a 64 page program this year. Whether you're an exhibitor, spectator or just a mule lover, our goal each year is to provide information explaining what you can expect to see the entire week here at Mule Day. I want to extend to each and everyone of you an invitation to attend the 2010 Mule Day festivities. I know you will find something fun and entertaining for everyone young and old alike. – Harvey Spann

About the Cover

Joseph Vick, a local mule artist depicts the mule doing everyday choirs. Joseph's prints can be seen and purchased at www.muleprints.com, also you can visit his booth at the park during Mule Day. A special thanks goes out to our advertisers, they make printing this Mule Day program possible. Please help support them while visiting Columbia and throughout the year.

Check-In Center

The Red Top Log Cabin at the entrance to Maury County Park will be used as a “Check-In Center” for exhibitors, concessionaires and people bringing equipment that needs assistance. Our visitors that know where they are going, have the correct paperwork, etc. need not stop at the cabin. The cabin will be open through Friday evening. The “Information Center” within the park will still be open and is there to assist everyone with general information, official Mule Day pins, bumper stickers, etc.

“So, this your first trip to Mule Day?” By Bob Duncan Let’s say, for sake of argument, that you just came from another planet and landed here smack in the middle of Mule Day. Don’t laugh. It has happened before. As the emcee for the annual Liar’s Contest I always ask for a show of hands to see where everyone has come from. A few years ago, as I ticked off the states and a few hands went up here and there, I noticed this one fellow who seemed to hold his hand up no matter what locality I mentioned. Deciding to test the fellow, I asked if anyone was from Iceland. His hand went up. Then I asked for Borneo. His hand went up. Katmandu? Hand up. Antarctica? Hand. It was at this point that I delivered the acid test – anybody here from the Ring Nebula of Seti-Alpha 9? Sure enough, his hand went up. So, now you know that I was not kidding – we do have interplanetary visitors for Mule Day and I offer this case as proof positive of the point. Even considering our guests from outer space we continue to have lots of visitors from around the good old U.S. of A. Of course, some of them come year after year but there are lots of them who come just once. Each year at the Liar’s Contest I ask the crowd if this is their first trip to Mule Day and invariably about half the crowd is here for the very first time. But don’t feel bad as there is a first time to everything. You just have to sharpen your elbows and wade into the crowd. Mule Day is the last great stand of country folk. It is the passing of memories before our eyes long thought forgotten. It is a gathering of the descendants of good, solid peckerwood folk who worked the mules and lived with them; each contributing to their mutual care and feeding. The ownership of a good team of mules meant the difference between relative self-sufficiency and independence as compared to the hand-to-mouth subsistence as a share cropper working someone else’s mules. While the ownership of a good team of mules meant personal progress for your family, the ownership of a bad team meant heartbreak and disaster. The mule is a cross between the horse and the donkey. It is, in short, a hybrid creature and as with other hybrid-crosses, the features of its parents are multiplied and

magnified. The mule is stronger and more resilient than either the horse or donkey. It is more sure-footed and nimble than either. But, at the same time, the mule is smarter, more mischievous and possibly more malevolent than either of the parents. In short, a bad mule is bad news. He has both the endurance and evil wit to wear a poor man down – if he does not kill him outright with a lightning-fast kick to the head. A bad mule will tear up your crops, rip up his harness, destroy your plows and tools, harass your other animals and kick down your gates and fences. A bad mule is a devil on four legs and his reputation will spread like kudzu. You can’t sell him as no one will buy him. You are stuck with him and he is stuck with you. Until death you both shall part. But a team of good mules was a joy to an old time farmer. Such mules would work hard for you. They never stepped on your young plants while you were “busting the middles.” They worked from dawn to dusk in the hot fields and never asked for much. Whether or not mules were good depended largely upon the man who did the breeding. It was his sharp eye and long experience that made good matches between sire and dam. A good and honest mule breeder was an important man to know. Very often he was a man who “made” or “broke” his farming community.

And this is why the descendants of oldtime yeoman farmers still flock to Columbia, Maury County early each spring. This is the anniversary of the great mule trading event that was held here for generations. When a farmer wanted to acquire a team of good mules he came to Columbia – the little Tennessee town world famous for its mules. It was here that the best of the mule breeders brought their stock. It was here that farmers swarmed on “First Monday” (the precursor of Mule Day) to buy and sell. It was here that both the U.S. and British Armies sent their buyers to purchase draft stock to supply their troops. It was here that the local folks all had a picket fence around their yards to keep the huge herds of mules in the streets and out of their flower beds. And now you have come. Eat the barbeque, buy the trinkets, watch the parade and the mule pullings and go to the dances and the shows but, while you are here, think again of those old timers who once came here for reasons of life and death. It was here that small farmers found a way toward prosperity. It was here that untold numbers of families got their first look at their new pair of mules. It was here that hard-working folks found a richer, more productive life. Welcome to Mule Day.

Welcoming You... CITY OF COLUMBIA

MAURY COUNTY GOVERNMENT

Dear Columbia Visitors:

Dear Maury County Visitors:

On behalf of the City of Columbia, I extend to you a very special welcome to Mule Day 2010. As in the past, our celebration will be the continuation for our City’s namesake, the Mule Capital of the World. Our City employees will be available to insure your visit is both safe and memorable. Saturday’s parade is one of the greatest outdoor events in the south and can be viewed in our beautiful downtown/West 7th Street area. The City continues to expand its shopping, dining, entertainment and historical venues that we hope will enhance your Mule Day celebration experience. We are honored you have chosen to spend your weekend with us! We appreciate you visiting Columbia and Maury County for Mule Day 2010. Our hope is that you can say you were treated with southern hospitality by the citizens of Columbia. Have a safe trip home, and we look forward to seeing you again for our next Mule Day celebration 2011!

I would like to take this opportunity to formally welcome all of our 2010 visitors to Maury County and let you know how pleased we are to have you share a Mule Day experience with us. Last year’s Mule Day Celebration was a tremendous success, and we believe the 2010 celebration will be even better. Maury County is still an agricultural based county and I am proud to have grown up on a farm where mules were the mainstay of the agricultural operations. Our family had a pair of big mules named Kate and Maude and as a small boy they seemed gigantic. They did everything that tractors do today such as plowing our garden to pulling the plows and wagons to plant and harvest our crops. While in Maury County, please feel free to call on me or my office assistants for any help or information you need while visiting Maury County. Maury County employees will be happy to answer any questions and stand by to make your visit the most memorable occasion. Please remember that as a visitor to the 2010 Mule Day, you are our honored guests.

Sincerely, Dean Dickey Mayor City of Columbia

T hings You Don't Want to Miss! Looking for action, excitement, and fun-filled entertainment for the whole family, Mule Day is the place to be starting on Thursday night with special entertainment. Paul Daily will kick off the event by amazing you with his horse skills. He gentles horses with words, and pats until they let him bridle, saddle, and ride them all within two hours. Mule Races will follow Mr. Daily. You definitely do not want to miss who goes home with the bragging rights to the fastest mule in Tennessee. Next, Rick Revel will entertain you by telling an emotional and thoughtprovoking story about Tennessee native, Tod Carter. The story will

revolve around his experiences during the Civil War. It will begin with Tod and Rosencranz, the horse he raised, marching off to war until the day that they both died at the Battle of Franklin on his father’s farm. Last but definitely not least, the fast-action, straight shootin cowboy mounted shooters will end the night by keeping you on the edge of your seat. Have you ever wanted to get an adrenaline rush? The mechanical bull will take you for the ride of your life for 8 seconds. If the bull isn’t your cup of tea, the high flying bungee will definitely keep you on your toes. A HISTORY OF MULE DAY Around 1840 Columbia became known for its April Livestock show and Street Mule Market on the first Monday of that month. It was not until 1934 that Columbia began the famous Mule Day and the community joined in the celebration of the mules. On that first Mule Day in 1934 Mr. W.D. Hastings, then chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee, Tom Brown and E.E. Johnson, Sr. planned a parade on the day of the livestock show to get more of the mules and other livestock business that had once made Columbia the second largest livestock market in the world involved. Winning first place in the parade was a donkey-drawn wagon depicting an old-timey trip to town. The wagon was loaded with a crate of cabbage, coop of chickens, basket of eggs and other produce items. For more than 100 years mules were big business in Maury County and the first Monday in April drew huge crowds of buyers, sellers, traders and mules and with these gatherings a festive air was evident. Many give credit for the idea of adding a crown to a champion mule and gracing the occassion with a Queen and

her attendants to the Daily Herald's late publisher W.D. Hastings. Norman Parks says that once this idea came into being he and the late Fred Journey, who were partners in the mule business, pitched in a helping hand, interest began to spread and the first Mule Day as we know it was born. The first mule was seen in Maury County about 1826. Mr. W.B. Wilkes of the Culleoka area wrote that the first mule he saw plowing in Maury County was at John Whitaker's in 1826. About 1830, Thomas Amis and Amzie Caruthers of the same general area began raising mules and driving them in large droves South. After 1941 Mule Day discontinued because of World War II. It returned in 1947 but was discontinued again in 1951 from lack of interest. MULE DAY RETURNS (April 5, 6, 1974 - Friday & Saturday) It was at one of our meetings of the Maury County Bridle and Saddle Club, that maybe Mule Day would be revived again. We decided we wanted to do something that would interest the community so someone suggested Mule Day.

MULE DAY 2010 – www.muleday.com

Some of us met at Harve Mason's house in Westover Park and talked about a dream becoming a reality. It did, and we started to work in the later months of 1973 and the first one hit the ground running the first full week-end in April 1974 with only a small amount of money in the treasury. It couldn't have been done without monetary help from downtown business folks. Buddy Morgan was Mayor of Columbia that year and he, along with the Chamber of Commerce helped to make the return of Mule Day a success.

AMAZING GRACE STAR OF NBC'S TODAY SHOW TO APPEAR AT MULE DAY 2010 During mid-July I was watching the Today Show, and it "caught" my attention that a mule named "Grace" was going to appear during the next hour there in downtown New York City. Grace was given "10 minutes" of air time; part of the segment was there "live" with owner Steve Foster and part was filmed at the Foster's farm with Actor Robert Duvall and Today's Jill Rappaport, which is located in Front Royal, Virginia. Later that day I got to thinking that 'Grace" would be a good addition" to our Mule Day Event, so I called the NBC TODAY office in New York City, and obtained the information on Grace and the Fosters. Steve and Pam Foster made the "trek" from their farm in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley to New York so Grace could strut her stuff on national TV, but folks will next get a glimpse of the "equine wunderkind" on the big screen. It happens that Robert Duvall owns a farm down the road from the Foster's, and after hearing about Grace's talent, he went to visit and decided to cast her in his upcoming film "GET LOW". According to the Foster's, the movie will be released in the spring of 2010. According to Pam Foster, Grace is going to follow in the "hoof steps" of other famous "equine"; Mr Ed and "Francis the Talking Mule" who by the way made an appearance at Columbia Mule Day during the late 1940's and spent the night at the Famous Haynes Haven Farms in Spring Hill. There are several "tricks" that Grace performed on the Today Show, some of them being – Put a paint brush in her mouth, a board in front of her and she

"paints" (yes, her paintings are for sale for up to $1,000) – Put her with a basketball goal and ball and she "dunks" the ball – She is able to get mail from a mail box – Deliver bottled water to a friend, upon command – Ask her age and she will "paw" the number of her age. Steve Foster has been training mules for more than 20 years, but when he met a

the only mule in the contest, claimed the "top spot", as she wowed the judges with her feats in the Richmond, Virginia show. Grace will perform three shows during our Mule Day event, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday in the main arena, (back arena) plus will have a good "spot" in the Parade in downtown Columbia on Saturday morning. See the schedule of events on page 6 for the time each day. Grace's stall will be in the area of the Mule Day Office, so stop by for a visit, with Grace and the Fosters. young Grace and took her into his fold of five, he knew he had a most unusual animal on his hands. Proving to be far from the stereotypical stubborn mule, Grace took to Foster's trick teaching, and loved the attention. Before long, she could push a stuffed animal in a stroller, ring a bell, play "hoops" and stand on a box. Foster states that she knows the tone of my voice "when to stop and when to go". I don't know where Grace is going to take me, but I know I am going to follow her, Foster told the Northern Virginia Daily . Pam Foster stated that she's learned to take the attention her husband lavishes on Grace in stride – knowing the feeling is mutual; for when Grace hears his truck pull-up she whines like a dog for his attention. Grace went from local legend to the national 'spotlight" last year when Foster entered her in the America's Ultimate Horse Idol competition, being 931.381.9557 – Columbia, TN

FRIDAY 12:00 NOON DRIVING SHOW

This show demonstrates how well mules work to wagons. From one mule to a four mule hitch, the mule is worked to see how well he obeys the driver. If you notice, the two mules are matched in color, size, gait and strength. A good driving team works as one. The skidding can be done with one line or by voice command. When done with voice command, everyone’s attention is fixed on the mule to see how well he obeys. During old’en days, a good mule that was trained to voice command was more common than today. However, we usually have one or two that are trained to voice command. So stop by and see these sometimes stubborn animals show off just how smart they truly are. Entry fee $5.00 per class. Payback $60, $50, $40, $30 and $20. 1. Skidding - 1 Mule to Slide - 1 Line and/or Voice Commands 2. Skidding - 2 Mules to Slide - 1 Line and/or Voice Commands 3. Draft Horse Hitch 4. COLUMBIA MULE DAY By: Bob Ammons of Almo, Kentucky Reprinted with permission of Mules & More magazine.

It was a dark and stormy night, we were headed to Columbia, Tennessee, as we traveled south on Interstate 65 out of Nashville the rain was falling like it was being poured from a boot, we made it to Stan’s Restaurant and decided to have supper. Stan’s is a local restaurant just off I-65 at the Columbia exit, and judging from the size of the crowd on such a night it is obviously a local favorite. After trying their barbecue it is easy to understand why people braved the weather to get there. After spending the night in our mule trailer at Stan’s parking lot, we only had to drive 10 miles Friday morning to the check-in cabin for Mule Day 2009. We were greeted at the cabin by Connie Thrasher and Ricky Smith, both were very helpful and presented us with a wonderful first impression of Mule Day. This being our first trip to this huge regional event, we were not prepared for how well organized and how helpful the staff was when it came to getting us to our campsite, and providing us with event information. Everyone there did a first rate job. Friday was our first full day at Mule Day, within the first hour it was obvious this place would have MULES AND MORE, there was something here for everyone, there were arts and crafts booths, flea market booths and daily live entertainment. Even if you have never even seen a mule this event is worth the visit. However, it is also a 22

MULE DAY 2010 – www.muleday.com

mule lover’s dream come true. The first mule we saw was what is probably the tallest mule in the world, certainly the tallest mule I’ve seen. His name is Shorty and he stands 19.2 hands (that’s 6 feet 6 inches at the withers); he is owned by Anthony Findley and Paul Smith of Crossville, Tennessee. Anthony told us Shorty is eight years old and out of a draft mare and a 15 hand jack (talk about hybrid vigor). The big events at Mule Day are of course the mule shows. The first event we attended was the stick mule show. Wilson Putman of Jackson, Tennessee was busy preparing his stick mule, Cody, for the show, but took time out to chat. Wilson, at the age of two, is an old hand at showing stick mules and came away with a blue ribbon. Next, we attended the gaited mule show, it was fortunate we went to the arena early because the bleachers were full, this event was well attended by spectators. As always, I tried to pick the winning mule, an impossible task, as all the mules were performing flawlessly. Every time I thought I had the winning mule picked, another mule caught my eye. Saturday morning found us again wandering around the arts and crafts/ flea market area with my wife, Brenda, finding something at every booth we couldn’t live without. I had agreed to suffer through this, although walking was difficult after the pancake breakfast

that morning. In exchange for my suffering she agreed we would not miss the mule pulling and later the draft mule show. The parade through downtown Columbia is one of the highlights of the event and enjoyed by everyone. In my many years of attending parades in many different parts of this great country, few can rival the Mule Day Parade. If you have never attended the Columbia Mule Day Parade all I can say is you have missed one of the best times possible for the entire family. The parade route was lined down both sides of the street as far as I could see. Although the theme was Mules, there were floats and groups representing many different areas and businesses. By the time Sunday morning arrived I was getting the feeling that Mule Day in Columbia, Tennessee was much, much more than a celebration of the Mule. Mule Day is a celebration of all the best of America and its people. People that are honest, hard working, family oriented, patriotic folks who remember their roots and know that regardless of what the future holds, their values will see them through. I would like to thank all the organizers and staff of Mule Day 2009 for an unforgettable experience. I could not make a single suggestion as to how you could improve this event….everyone performed at 100 percent.

Mule Day History Headlight Nell's Trip To Visit Tennessee Governor – 1950

By Dave Skillington During the late 1940's and with the aftermath of World War ll; Mule Day was losing interest, as the "age of tractors" was fast approaching. The Columbia Chamber of Commerce was the sponsoring organization, and they were looking for something to generate interest in the event. My father Charlie Skillington was the Mule Day Chairman at that time and Louis Amos who was Manager of The Chamber of Commerce, came up with the idea to have someone ride a mule from Columbia to The State Capitol in Nashville to "hand deliver" an invitation to Governor Gordon Browning to invite him to be Grand Marshall of the Mule Day Parade. My Father volunteered to make the trip and he had the "perfect mule" to ride; a black mule named "Nell' that just happen to have "white markings" around the eyes, so she was called "Headlight Nell" from that time forward. So on a cold February morning (the 28th) , my father left our home on Snow Creek Road in the Santa Fe community of Maury County and started on his trip to the State Capitol. He traveled through the Bethel community and stopped at the school (yes, there was children in school at Bethel) and the teacher had everyone come out and meet "Headlight Nell". He continued toward Leipers Fork, which was known as Hillsboro, back in those days, had lunch south of Leipers Fork, and continued toward Nashville, and spent the night on Old Hickory Blvd. across from 26

MULE DAY 2010 – www.muleday.com

Percy Warner Park at a friend's house that was a farmer at that time. The next morning the family traveled to Nashville (yes my mother let me out of school for the day, for one of my teachers told her I would learn more at the Capitol, than I would in school that day), we met up with Daddy and Headlight Nell outside of Nashville and one of our neighbors pulled the shoes off Nell so she would not slip going into downtown Nashville. We had a police escort, and we traveled downtown on Eighth Avenue and went right up the hill to the Capitol. Governor Gordon Browning was waiting for us, and Daddy offered him a Coke that he had carried in his saddle bags on the trip. I remember the Governor telling Daddy that was the coldest drink he had ever had. The event was carried "live" on WLAC Radio, Headlight Nell "brayed" on the radio and people in Columbia thought that a person was making the "sound". Needless to say the trip was a success and Governor Browning accepted the invitation and attended Mule Day 1950. In closing, this event "stands out" as one of my favorite of Mule Day memories.

Old Tennessee Trail

A Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways Trail – by Maury County Visitors Bureau In 1950 when Mr. Charlie Skillington started his trek to Nashville to invite Governor Browning to Mule Day, little did he know that sixty years later the State of Tennessee would be promoting his route – Santa Fe, Bethel, Old Hillsboro (now Leiper’s Fork) and Nashville – as part of the Old Tennessee Trail, the first trail in the Discover Tennessee Trails and Byways trail system. He was just finishing up where the current trail can begin – Nashville.

Launched in November 2009, the Old Tennessee Trail takes you thru Leiper’s Fork, Bethel, Fly, Water Valley, Williamsport, Cross Bridges, Canaan, Mt. Pleasant, Columbia, Spring Hill and Thompson’s Station before ending in Franklin. This trail promotes the settlers and soldiers that brought notoriety to this area. The trail offers an opportunity to take a leisurely drive through beautiful hills and valleys of Maury and Williamson Counties. You are your own tour guide and can stop and start as many times as you would like as you wander these back roads and byways. As you travel the first part of the Trail, you might imagine what your mule team would have faced as it settled this area in the early 1800’s when good roads were non-existent. The rocky hills would have presented quite a challenge as you tried to put in a garden for your homestead since there were no grocery stores readily available to feed your family. As you proceed into the Dynasty of the Duck area, you can see the fertile soil and know that a team of good mules plowed this land to make the owners the money to build their beautiful homes, many of which are still standing. When you begin to complete your drive, you will understand the devastating result of John Bell Hood’s choice of battle plans. And, you would know that in the mix of the battles there were mules bearing equipment for the armies. When you visit Tennessee in early April for Mule Day, we invite you to plan some time in your busy schedule to take this trail. It will help you understand our area much better and it will give you a relaxing day before all the fun and festivities start. For more information before you arrive, visit www.tntrailsandbyways.com. Here in Maury County, brochures will be available at our Maury County Visitors Center, 302 W. 7th Street, Columbia, or Maury County Visitors Bureau, 8 Public Square, Columbia. We are looking forward to seeing you and helping you plan your Old Tennessee Trail experience in Maury and Williamson Counties. The parade will again end at the main gate of Columbia Academy, located on West 7th Street, just past the railroad tracks. This will provide better viewing for more people and will help with the traffic congestion downtown, during and after the parade. All non-animal type floats, autos, trucks and people walking in the parade will enter the Columbia Academy School grounds for pick-up or disband, etc. All mule teams with wagons, mule and horse riders, etc., will stay on West 7th Street on the way to Maury County Park as in the past. No animals will be allowed to enter the Columbia Academy property. The Mule Day Committee would like to thank the officials of Columbia Academy and the City of Columbia for helping with the parade route.

Mule Day Funds Helping Maury County $475,000 - 2000 to 2009! Each year the Maury County Bridle and Saddle Club provide improvements to Maury County Park with the funds generated from the Mule Day event. These improvements (picnic shelter, rest rooms, fencing, paving, campgrounds, & arena upkeep) help make our event even better for the thousands of visitors who visit each year. We also place emphasis on education and supporting the youth programs such as “Pony Clubs” and “4-H Clubs”, for we want to teach about farm life and the great life of owning and caring for horses and mules. For the years 1974 thru 2009 we have donated to thirty-five local charities and the schools along Lion Parkway who work with us during our Mule Day event. Not included in the $475,000; other non-profit groups which help with Mule Day also benefit, and use our event as their main "fund raiser". The Tennessee Tech Alumni Assoc. sells our souvenirs, and has helped 500 students obtain college degrees; The Kawanis Club and Knights of Columbus who handle our gate and parking, receive funds from us which in turn is donated to our community. The Maury County Bridle and Saddle Club, sponsors of Mule Day, and the Mule Day Committee wish to extend a special invitation to come join us and see why Columbia, Tennessee is truly the “Mule Capital of the World.”

The World's Tallest Mule To Appear Again At Mule Day---2010 By Dave Skillington During the set-up of vendors on Wednesday of 2009; there was a lot of talk about "the big gray mule" that was making the "rounds" at the park pulling a wagon of family members. I "tracked" him down, which was easy because of his size, and met for the first time his coowner, Paul Smith of Crossville, TN. Shorty took to my petting and attention just like my Golden Retriever. Shorty is 6 feet, 6 inches to his shoulders or is "19.2 hands" in mule measurement terms. Paul is not sure but has been told by "experts" that Shorty holds the record of being the tallest mule in the world. One thing for sure everyone at Mule Day is not going to argue the claim. Paul Smith is six feet tall and Shorty "towers" above him, as the picture reflects Paul's head is even with the bits on the bridle. I asked Paul if he planned to be in the Parade on Saturday, and he stated that he was and already had his number in the wagon. I told him that I had an "odd request" for him and Shorty, and he stated "let me have it". The request was to "haul" the ashes of a departed man named James Carson who was a mule and horse fanatic and always wanted to ride in the Mule Day Parade but never got a chance to do so. The request came to the attention of Sonjalyn Rine of Maury County Park, and she asked me if the Mule Day Committee could arrange to "honor" the wishes of Mr. Carson's friends and family. During the Parade, Sonjalyn rode "shot gun" in the wagon holding the "ashes container" with Paul doing the driving. Needless to say because the story ran in The Daily Herald prior to parade day, this entry received a lot off attention, including the "lead story" on Nashville television stations. The Mule Day Committee has learned that Shorty had fun at Mule Day 2009, and wants to return for 2010 for which we are very pleased. He will again be "making the rounds" in the park on Wednesday and be in his "display stall" part of the time on Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Entertainment Section at the top of the hill above the Skillington Barn. Stop by to chat with Shorty, give him a few pats, make pictures of the "WORLD'S TALLEST MULE". The Mule Day Committee would like to thank Paul Smith and Anthony Findley for helping make our event more entertaining for everyone.

SATURDAY 2:00 PM DRAFT MULE SHOW The real beauty pageant of Mule Day is the Draft Mule Show held in the Old Arena. This 29 class show is for the mule to put its best hoof forward and be classy. This event culminates in the crowning of the Grand Champion. The show starts with the Jack classes – the father of the mule. This is followed by the Jennet classes – the mother of the henny. These classes are followed by some Draft Horse classes. From class eight until the Grand Champion class the mules will strut their stuff and show us just what beautiful animals they truly are. We look at their long legs, long ears, and build. The Grand Champion is crowned “King Mule”. Now this may be a mare mule or a horse mule. For more years than not, the “King Mule” has been a mare mule. Aren’t the girls always the prettiest! So come on out and cheer for your favorite Mule!

MULE DAY 2010 – www.muleday.com

Mule Definition A mule is, in its usual meaning, an offspring from a male donkey and a female horse, while the reverse of such is called a hinny. The mule is easier to breed and larger in size than the hinny, and usually the chromosomal match up is better when it is a male donkey and female horse – producing a unique offspring. They are almost always sterile, however there have been a few rare cases where mules and hinnies have been able to produce offspring of one type or another. Donkeys have a total of 62 chromosomes, and horses have 64 – the offspring have 63 and cannot divide evenly, which renders them sterile in almost all cases. The mule has long ears, short thick heads, thin limbs, small hooves, and a short mane; it also does not sound like a donkey, nor does it sound like a horse. There are many coats, depending on the sire and the dam. In behavior the mule has the same tendencies as the donkey with its patience, endurance, and agility in being sure footed, making it excellent in hard or more unstable terrain – however it lacks the fear and weaknesses of the donkey , rather it has more strength and is bolder. Their hooves are stronger, and they go lame much less often, and are resistant to disease in comparison with the horse. They also don’t like dogs quite as much as horses do, and are capable of defending themselves or their rider against a number of predators – with

recorded numerous kills against mountain lions. They also can fire off a kick in any direction they wish to with great accuracy, and can be lethal. There have been only sixty documented cases of fertile mules in four hundred years, and one clonedmule. What are Riding Mules and Gaited Mules? Mules come in very handy as riding partners along trails, or other traveling activity. They can match a horse’s abilities with ease- and in some ways offer a steadier ride. They are also often less ill-tempered if you know how to handle them. These mules are renowned for trail riding, and even make many appearances in the Bible. For those who don’t know, mule riding is a very rewarding experience, but there are a few simple things you should know before you decide on buying or renting your own mule. Gaited mules are very prized- as they have certain ways of moving that are desirable. Much like gaited horses, the mules have certain types of gallops, walks, trots, canters, and what is called “ambling gaits”. Trained mules can learn to go between these riding styles, and earn the title of “Gaited Mule” in return. When buying mules, gaited mules are obviously more expensive from the training or special breeding needed to earn the title of ‘gaited’. For trail riding and other non-sport uses, normal riding mules are the best, if you

are looking to save money. Riding mules may not know all of the gaits, but they are still very good travel partners nonetheless. Having control over the mule can prove beneficial in many situations. Un-gaited mules will be stubborn, and basically go at their own pace. Gaited mules have the upper hand in many instances, as you can command them to walk, trot, or gallop based on the situation. Gaited mules often tend to be more ‘teachable’, which therefore lets you create a better bond between owner and pet, should you buy a gaited mule. If you lack the money necessary to buy a gaited mule, but still need the gaits that come with such a prize mule, then you can train it yourself. This can often be very tedious work, as usually only certain breeds are trainable. Even still, mules can be very stubborn at times and resist training. Through persistence and a little research, you can manage to turn a normal riding mule into a gaited mule in due time. All in all, the entire decision comes down to price. If you have the extra money, gaited mules are a wonder to own, and brings extra pleasure in trail riding or sport. If you lack extra funds, then riding mules still make wonderful pets, riding partners, or pupils should you try to train them yourself. This information was taken from the website www.themules.net

PARADE RULES: The Mule Day parade is one of the highlights of the festivities and is attended by more people than any other event or activity during Mule Day. Each year the parade grows and the organizers strive to make it bigger and better than the year before. We are at a point where for the time being we can no longer make it bigger, but we can continue to make it better. The line-up area is going to be shorter for the 2010 parade and therefore we ask only pre-registered entries show up on the day of the parade. For 2010, all parade participants are asked to check in at the top of the hill on Carmack Boulevard and 17th Street. From there you will be directed to your line-up spot after you have checked in and after Coggins papers are checked for mounted entries. All parade participants should pre-register thru the Mule Day office prior to March 17. The parade is for approved entries that are pre-registered and assigned a line-up number through the office. If you have not pre-registered, we ask you come out and watch the parade, but not attempt to be a participant. All participants are asked to adhere to the parade rules. 1. Proof of current Coggins Test required for all equine 2. No balloons in the parade or along the parade route 3. No alcohol allowed in the parade or at the park 4. Meredith Hodges Feeds Young Minds with a Focus on Mules

By Helen T. Hertz

Few things are more gratifying than a young person’s success. To see a youth develop an interest, work toward a goal, and achieve it affirms our sense of possibility and our faith in the notion that things can be better than they are. Good teachers are a crucial part of this process. Without competent instruction and steady encouragement a child’s natural curiosity can wither on the vine. It’s true at home, it’s true in school, and it’s true in the riding arena. A passion for teaching and nurturing young aspirants has kept Meredith Hodges busy for more than three decades. She has poured her vast knowledge of mule and donkey training into a collection of books and DVDs designed not only to get her adult students moving in the right direction, but also to introduce young people to these marvelous animals and help guide the ones who accept the challenge of training their own. From television to one-on-one instruction, Meredith has tapped virtually every medium in an effort to help educate her students. “Kids have an amazing capacity for openmindedness,” says Meredith. “Really, in that regard, they’re a lot like mules. The trick is to keep them open and nurture that belief that success is possible, while reminding them that it takes patience and hard work.” Meredith goes at this from several different angles. First is her comprehensive training series. Anyone who pops a video from Training Mules and Donkeys: A Logical Approach to Longears into the DVD player will quickly see that this isn’t a course offering instant gratification. It’s more akin to grade school—a methodical, step-by-step approach introducing basic skills and building on those over time. People are often surprised to hear that each video in the 10-video series takes up to a year to complete. Meredith’s most recent DVD series and manual, Equus Revisited: A Complete Approach to Athletic Conditioning, complements her training series and does a great job explaining why this process is necessary 52

MULE DAY 2010 – www.muleday.com

and how it works. Just like kids, equines need confidence to learn. Build that physical and psychological confidence, and progress comes a lot easier. Meredith developed the bulk of her training material in the 1990’s, as attendance at mule and donkey shows around the country and general interest grew. But as more young people discovered longears, and the notion of raising a mule as a 4-H project took hold, Meredith noted there were no guidelines available specific to the breed. So she wrote “A Guide to Raising and Showing Mules” for just that purpose. The book is not only an ideal resource for a 4-H project, it’s also an affordable companion to the video series. With her training materials established as an indispensible resource for anyone standing face-to-face with a mule or donkey and students calling and emailing daily for personalized assistance, Meredith once again turned an eye toward the children. Her father, “Peanuts” creator Charles M Schulz, appreciated her passion for mules and encouraged her to do a children’s book. Meredith, never inclined to do things half-way, launched an entire series. Five books, two DVDs and a music CD later Jasper the Mule is popular with

kids and adults alike. Again, Meredith saw this venture as more than just a way to entertain the kiddos. Each book in the series includes a glossary and each story features facts about longears and a few lessons about life. “I created Jasper to help introduce kids to mules and donkeys and to encourage them to always do their best, treat others as they would like to be treated and be kind to all animals,” says Meredith. “I think the series does all of that in a really fun and unique way.” So do a lot of other folks. Jasper’s latest adventure, “Jasper Goes To Bishop” and the companion coloring book have been a big hit. The program, available on DVD, blends animation and live action in a fun-filled tribute to the good-natured competition taking place at mule shows around the country. Jasper has other adventures in store, as Meredith continues to open young minds and encourage people of all ages to build lasting friendships with their equines. 2009 Mule Day Queen

My Farewell

I began the journey to becoming the Mule Day Queen seven years ago, when I competed in the pageant for the first time. I did not place that year but left the pageant with a sense of accomplishment and a determination to do better the next year. I returned the following year with a little more maturity and a lot more preparation, and I placed third runner-up. After becoming a part of the Mule Day Queen's Court, I learned that this pageant was so much more than any other. It wasn't about getting all dolled up and riding in a parade (even though that part is fun!). This pageant was about choosing a representative who could not only look pretty in a dress, but who could reach out to people from any walk in life - someone who was approachable and made people feel comfortable. After this first experience on the Queen's court, I turned to Dave Skillington a.k.a. “Papa Dave” and said, “I have four more years to compete. I want to get on the court for the next three years and then win my last year of eligibility!” And that is exactly the way that it happened! I didn’t think about how nerve-racking it would be when it got down to my last year of eligibility! I held every runner-up position on the Queen's court once. 56

MULE DAY 2010 – www.muleday.com

My experience with the Mule Day pageant and all the people involved was truly amazing (or should I say five truly amazing experiences?). I wouldn't change a thing about my experiences with the Mule Day pageant. BUT on March 7, 2009, as I stood in a line-up of gorgeous girls and the four runners-up had already been named, I was having a few second thoughts about that statement I made back in 2005. At long last, my name was called that evening as the 2009 Mule Day Queen. After saying a quick prayer of ”thank you Jesus!” I was crowned and my dream became reality. Mission Accomplished, whew! Being on the Queen’s court each of those years helped me to understand just what it meant to be the Mule Day Queen and what would be expected of the queen and her court - each year was a wonderful experience and I think it was the preparation that I needed to step into the Queen’s shoes. My year as the Mule Day Queen has been nothing short of incredible. At the state Capitol, I gave an invitational speech to the House of Representatives and the Senate. I gave a speech to the Agriculture Committee during Ag Day on Capitol Hill. On both occasions I was able to meet the governor, Phil Bredesen. During Mule Day, I was given the honor to serve the

Mule Day committee and the Bridle and Saddle Club as an ambassador, and I was able to share that immense task with the four wonderful girls on my court. We had a blast (to say the least)! It is now, as I prepare to hand over the timehonored title of Mule Day Queen, I want to say to every young lady who has a dream of one day becoming the Mule Day Queen - do not ever give up. It is a title worth working for and it may take a while to achieve it, but when you do you will never have another experience in your life like it. Being the Mule Day Queen is so much more than a crown and sash - it is learning about your community, serving your community, stepping outside of your comfort zone to make others feel more comfortable and gaining friendships that will last a lifetime. I am so thankful for the opportunity to have held this title. Your 2009 Mule Day Queen,

Rachael Ethridge “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.” –Winston Churchill
