Just the Facts

Amid growing concern over travel in México, we look at the numbers and what’s being done By Ashley Alvarado

The news can be scary, but relaxing is easy when you have all the facts and views like this.

There is a travel warning for México, and the website offers a state-by-state assessment, which includes Baja California Sur. It encourages exercising caution but notes that most violence experienced here has been targeted within criminal groups.

Is there a travel warning for Los Cabos?

How does Baja California Sur compare to the rest of the country?

The United States Department of State website is a great resource for international travelers, and it regularly updates travel warnings and alerts for countries around the world.

México is a large country; it’s the 14th-largest country in the world, in fact. It covers more than 760,000 square miles and is home to more than 120 million people. Not only is Baja

There’s no denying increased concern over travel to certain parts of México. Headlines and Facebook posts travel quickly, spreading fear and, sometimes, misinformation. In light of heightened concerns, Los Cabos Magazine decided to reach out to experts and authorities to answer travelers’ frequently asked questions.

T R A V E L California Sur the youngest state, but it has the second-smallest population (about 700,000). The violence that has plagued México is concentrated in states like Durango, Sinaloa, and Guerrero (among others), which have been the focus of the so-called Mexican Drug War. While there has been a significant uptick in violent crime in the Baja Peninsula, it has by and large avoided tourists. Has there been an effect on tourism in Los Cabos? Los Cabos Mayor Arturo de la Rosa Escalante acknowledged, “There certainly is a nationwide problem with regard to incidents of insecurity,” but pointed out the insecurity concerns have not affected Los Cabos tourism. He told reporters in June: “We’re growing more than any other destination in the country: in 2015 [there were] 1.5 million visitors, in 2016, 2.5 million, and in 2017 we will surely reach 3.2 million.”

general, according to a report in Mexico News Daily. Local businesses are also supporting the increased law enforcement presence. In January, they agreed to pay roughly $1.3 million over 12 months to house and feed 190 officers from the National Gendarmerie, which is a division of the México’s federal police.

What is the government doing to keep Los Cabos safe?

Los Cabos is home to a special tourism police; these specially trained forces are regulars in tourist hot spots and speak English in order to better serve you. Additionally, early this summer Los Cabos opened a center of attention and protection for tourists (CAPTA) on the Cabo San Lucas Marina. If you are dealing with any issues—concerns over health, safety, security, or travel—you can address them at CAPTA, which is open all day every day of the year. It’s good to remember Los Cabos is also home to a U.S. and a Canadian embassy.

ROGELIO PÉREZ

“We’re doing our part responsibly: purging our [police] corporation and purchasing uniforms and equipment for them,” the mayor told journalists, as reported by El Universal. “We have the country’s highest paid police, second only to Tijuana.” The security infrastructure in Los Cabos comprises 300 federal police offers (with more than 50 new patrol vehicles), 900 soldiers, 250 marines, and 50 federal agents under the attorney

Is the tourism industry just glossing this over? The Los Cabos Tourism Board has acknowledged the spike in security issues in the Baja Peninsula. The director, Rodrigo Esponda, explained via www.itravel-cabo.com: “We have an obligation to let visitors know the situation. But recent events must be seen in context. With two exceptions, the violence and shootings have not been anywhere near the tourist areas. Overall the destination of Los Cabos is perfectly safe. Thousands of tourists have been arriving every day. In the first quarter of this year, Los Cabos airport has experienced a 27.4 percent increase in passengers. And overall, Baja California Sur has welcomed 875,000 tourists so far this year. This would not be happening if Los Cabos wasn’t safe.” Should any information change, you can visit www.loscabosmagazine.com or www.loscabosguide.com for updates, as well as travel and security resources. A Local’s Guide to Los Cabos Shopping It’s time for a little retail therapy

Los Cabos Magazine | Fall 2017

L I F E S T Y L E You’re on vacation in a shopper’s paradise. It’s time to treat yourself to a little relaxation and retail therapy. After all, nothing haunts us like the things we don’t buy. Here, in Los Cabos, you’ll have the shopping experience of a lifetime. I hope you left a little extra room in that suitcase of yours.

JOSEPH A. TYSON

A delightful way to stay cool in Cabo San Lucas is to venture into the beautiful—and air-conditioned—Puerto Paraíso (www.puertoparaiso.mx) shopping center. I remember when Puerto Paraíso opened; it was like the circus had come to town. Up until that point, Cabo San Lucas had been considered something of a T-shirt town. This new shopping center—with its marble, granite, escalators, elevators, and store windows full of eye candy— changed that. The mega complex also features a movie theater and arcade. Located on the Cabo San Lucas Marina in the heart of the city, Puerto Paraíso at the time of its construction was the most ambitious commercial shopping and entertainment center ever constructed in Southern Baja. It promised to offer tourists and locals a world of entertainment, dining, shopping, and more, including open areas for strolling and relaxing. That promise has held true. Today, after a total overhaul, one can find a plethora of trendy boutiques and internationally recognized brands in the multilevel complex offering clothing, jewelry, art, fine dining, and entertainment. Looking for beachwear? Puerto Paraíso is the place to go with a number of swimwear shops. Customers come from La Paz and San José del Cabo to purchase swimwear because of the vast options here. The trend for swimwear continues to be mix-andmatch separates and tankinis allowing that few women are the same size top and bottom. Tropica Calipso Swimwear owner Margarita Partridge says, “There are now more playful and exciting styles and colors available in all brands for every size and for every

woman. Cover-ups are a must in any swimwear shop and very important in giving the customer her complete look.” To stand out from the competition at Puerto Paraíso, Partridge points to her bilingual sales team, who have been fitting customers since 1993. Two more must-visit swimwear shops are Zingara and Intimissimi. The latter is owned by Cristina López, who hails from Guadalajara. At her store, you’ll find gorgeous lingerie in addition to swimwear. Puerto Paraíso features a new food court with a mix of Greek, Mexican, and Peruvian food, as well as new retailers like the MacStore and Forever 21. In addition to world-renowned Ruth’s Chris Steak House located in a stunning marina-front location, there are an abundance of eateries to take the edge off a shopping spree. Other shops to check out include Cabo Hats and its Scala collection, Kid’s Paradise for unique children’s wear, Mexico Hand Made for a special remembrance of your trip to Los Cabos, Tommy Bahama for golf ac-

cessories and more, a shop for Harley Davidson fans, Happy Land play area for kids, and several outlets for souvenirs such as Casa Tequila. There are also pharmacies, banks, and Häagen Dazs ice cream. Luxury Avenue (www.luxuryavenue .com) is an upscale shopping center housed within the Puerto Paraíso complex that features brands such as Armani, Bvlgari, Cartier, Tous and the flagship stores Ultra Femme and Ultra Jewels. Longchamp and Tag Heuer join the high-end collection this fall. Speaking of jewelry, Diamonds International (www.diamondsinternational .com) at Puerto Paraíso offers an enormous selection of fine jewelry and luxury watch brands. If a new pair of sunshades is on your shopping list, look no further. There are stores galore in Los Cabos with trendy designer brand names such as Chanel. When you get tired of shopping, sit down…and try on shoes. The perfect place to do this is at Casa Vieja

The Shoppes at Palmilla appeal to a well-traveled and sophisticated clientele. Yes, here you can find unique designer clothing and accessories, exclusive timepieces of jewelry, furniture, fine art, and fabulous food choices. But the shopping center also appeals to those seeking an afternoon at an exclusive boutique mall offering an afternoon of relaxed browsing, personal service, and exciting restaurants like Nick-San, Chin’s Chinese restaurant, and Tenangos Mexican Cuisine, to name a few. Here you’ll also find the U.S. Consular Agent office as well as a bank, organic grocery, beauty salon, and real estate and law offices. Take an afternoon and visit San José del Cabo for a one-of-a-kind shopping experience. When I have out-of-town guests, this is where I take them. We go to the main boulevard in downtown San José, where they can walk down one side of the street and back up the other side checking out many unique shops with the trinkets, gems, and jewels that México is known for. One place that is a must-visit is Indira Gems (www.jewelrydesignserscabo.com), a jewelry boutique specializing in oneof-a-kind pieces. It’s located in front of the historical San José Mission Church. Here’s where you can shop till you drop, and enjoy every moment of it. Y 26

March 15–17 Attendees will witness a spectacular arts festival known as Gala de Danza at the architecturally renowned Mar Adentro Hotel in San José del Cabo. The space is transformed into a global amphitheater to create a stage that appears to be floating on water and converging with the sea while patrons watch in awe from chic hotel suite balconies sipping Champagne and nibbling on canapés. Arts impresario and founder Christina Lyon has secured international renowned principal dancers from the American Ballet Theatre and Bolshoi Ballet. www.galadedanza.com Y 30

Girls Getaway Social media stars and the ultimate Los Cabos Magazine itinerary By Carleton Eckhardt & Mikaela Wightman Photos by CaboPictures.com

First time in Los Cabos? Come along with us as we detail our weeklong Los Cabos getaway, which was designed by the teams at Los Cabos Magazine and Los CabosGuide.com Thursday As soon as we arrived in Los Cabos, we retrieved our luxury Jeep Wrangler from Ten Car Rental (www.tencarrental .com). It was the perfect ride for our adventure. First stop: beautiful Hacienda del Mar Los Cabos (www.haciendadel mar.com.mx). Our suite was immaculate and spacious, the grounds were nothing short of spectacular, and the staff members were very accommodating. If you are looking for cocktails, tequila, and dancing (as we were), look no farther than the Nowhere Bar (www.no 32

wherebar.com) on the Cabo San Lucas Marina. This hotspot boasts an amazing tequila selection and a dance floor made of lighted neon tiles—just the kind of activity we were looking for on our first night in Los Cabos. Friday Our second day started with breakfast at the hotel’s on-site restaurant Girasoles de la Hacienda with a view of the beach and ocean as well as smoothies, freshsqueezed juices, mimosas, and Mexican specialties. We devoted the rest of the day to our favorite activity: shopping! Starting out at Cobalto Pottery (www .cobaltotiles.com)—the place for the best Cabo souvenirs—we did not leave empty handed. It is impossible to resist the beautiful handmade ceramic kitchenware, tiles, and woven handbags.

Los Cabos Magazine | Fall 2017

That evening, we made plans to head to the Cabo San Lucas Marina and hop on the famous 65-foot Tropicat (www .tropicat.com) catamaran for a sunset wine and jazz cruise. Tropicat is loaded with tapas-style snacks and a full bar. We grabbed piña coladas and made our way to the bow to take in the view and snap a few photos. This is the picture-perfect way to see incredible rock formations as well as Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach. Afterward, we ended up at the weekly Social Friday event at Pitayitas Bar (www.pitahayas.com), the little bar next to the gorgeous palapa-covered dining room at Pitahayas restaurant at our hotel to cap off our glorious day on the water. The indoor bar is beautiful and modern, with a red carpet entry. The real draw is the cozy outdoor sofa seating. With a lively

crowd, great energy, and skilled bartenders, Pitayitas offered a great ending to a perfect day. Saturday On Saturday, we relaxed at the hotel and took advantage of the amenities, including services at the on-premise Cactus Spa with a 60-minute Swedish massage and an exotic chocolate-scented massage. The second was a calorie-free indulgence rich in cocoa butter and milk proteins that replenishes moisture and restores elasticity. Sunday Sunday was spent at Breathless Resort (www.breathlessresorts .com) on the Cabo San Lucas Marina, thanks to its day pass. Such a great party vibe! We highly recommend spending the day poolside with the resort’s constant flow of cocktails, Mexican snacks, and Champagne. Tip: Come hungry. The breakfast and lunch buffets were laden with delectable dishes. Tequila tasting at La Biblioteca de Tequila restaurant is mandatory. After a long day at the pool, we hit Barefoot Grill, where ribs and burgers are prepared on the grille. The Purple VIP Rooftop Lounge is ideal to catch the sunset and enjoy a night cap. Monday Monday took us on a road trip to the East Cape, taking lots of photos of the desert flora, serene beaches, and the Sea of Cortés. Tuesday On Tuesday, we decided to look for resort wear and headed to I. O. Domani Boutique (www.iodomani.com) in Koral Center. It features brands such as Rachel Pally, Elizabeth & James, and House of Harlow. It’s a chic collection of gorgeous colors and prints, with an eclectic selection of jewelry. We enjoyed a light lunch at Pan di Bacco (www.pandibacco.com) within Los Cabos Magazine | Fall 2017

El Merkado. Here pasta is rolled by hand behind the counter of beautiful breads. Highlights of our meal included gnocchi a la Sorrentina, rucola e prosciutto salad, and delicious pizza. We took a roundabout tour enjoying the desert scenery, ending back at the hotel to freshen up. Wearing our new outfits, we had dinner at La Deriva (www.laderivarestaurant.com) at the Solaz Los Cabos. We relaxed in the outdoor seating area and enjoyed incredible Italian cuisine in a stunning setting with views of the beach and water. Dinner included creamy and delicious burrata, mussels prepared in a white wine and Gorgonzola sauce, and fresh squid ink pasta. Wednesday We went back out on the water for an amazing snorkeling excursion with Tropicat. We sailed out past the iconic arch at Land’s End and enjoyed lunch and cocktails while having the option of jumping in the refreshing water to snorkel. For dinner, we went to Daikoku (http://loscabos.daikoku .com.mx/en), an exciting Japanese restaurant in Cabo San Lucas, where we shared an assortment of sushi and maki in a beautiful Japanese garden complete with waterfalls. The interior is modern with a glass floor over a Zen garden. We couldn’t leave Cabo 34

without a quick visit to famous Cabo Wabo (www.cabowabocantina.com). Thursday On our final day, we had to make a stop in San José del Cabo. It was an absolute pleasure to visit Indira Gems (www.jewelrydesignerscabo .com), a stunning jewelry boutique owned by Indira López and Isidro Sánchez. Every piece is a work of art. We were shown the process of craftsmanship that goes into each contemporary design. We were fortunate to work with Cabo Pictures (www.cabopictures

.com) during our stay and have each unforgettable moment caught on film. Whether a special occasion, event, or moment that you want to capture in Cabo, don’t pass up the opportunity to work with Cabo Pictures. We are thrilled with the images and know you will be, too. Their expertise and eye for detail are just what it takes for a memorable experience. Y Carleton Eckhardt is a lifestyle and travel blogger; her website is www.carletoneck hardt.com. It will consist of a mixture of condominiums and single-family homes, similar to Portus’s other successful projects. The Phase III-B topography allows for something exceedingly rare in Los Cabos: single-story view homes. Owners here will have access to their own clubhouse as well as the clubhouse at neighboring Phase III. The Ventanas projects are popular for both full-time and vacation ownership. The modern design complex will include 84 two- and three-bedroom condominiums in three multistory towers, a central clubhouse, and single-family homes (villas). The 60 villas are offered in two models; each is a three-bedroom home with two-and-a-half baths and are two-story designs. These units are offered “mainland style,” meaning the buyer can customize them by adding closets, kitchen, and air conditioners. The amenities planned for the clubhouse include an infinity pool, fire pit, gym, children’s play area, and a deli. The common areas will also include gardens, tennis court, fire pits, and children’s areas. The units themselves will come with high-end finishes, including travertine, granite counters, on-demand hot water, and GE Profile appliances. The ground-floor units are offered with the option of a private plunge pool. All units will have the options of adding individual water purification systems, hot tubs, and furniture packages to make them truly turnkey. Pre-construction pricing starts at just less than $300,000 U.S. with financing offered. The pre-construction terms are 50 percent down payment with the balance amortized for 10 years at 6.5 percent for a threeyear balloon or 7.5 percent for a fiveyear term. Y

Mapping Your Real Estate Plan A real estate expert shares her must-ask questions By Carol S. Billups

When working with a client at the start of his or her search, I find it helpful to have a preliminary meeting to 40

explore the buyer’s situation; that meeting usually leads us to a specific strategy. Here are a couple of the points we go over in that session: How will you be using this property? It seems like an obvious question, but the answer affects much of the decision process. In particular, it is important to know whether you will be using the property as a full-time or winter residence. Some developers are quoting expected delivery times 36 months away, which could

FRANCISCO ESTRADA

It’s the real estate question you didn’t know you were supposed to ask: Which option are we ready for? With so many new opportunities in Los Cabos, there are more choices (and requisite decisions) than ever before. Should you buy a pre-owned custom home in an established community? Opt for new construction in a newer development? Or maybe elect to cash in on pre-construction pricing? How can one choose the path that’s best?

R E A L

E S T A T E

severely impact your planned move. In such cases, it might be better to limit your search to properties that are ready for occupancy, even if you are a year away from moving. Various factors affect the future delivery dates of properties under construction; it’s wise to check with local brokers about the delivery history of a particular project. If your interest is a vacation property, the pre-construction program might be a good fit. Some developers provide free accommodations in other units prior to delivery of your own if they have a relationship with a hotel or a rental program is in place in the communities they previously built. In effect, they are offering you free vacations during the construction phase. Pre-construction pricing is generally based on a discount of up to 20 percent from the anticipated cost of the same unit when delivered. If you will be using the property as a vacation rental, the calculation has to take into consideration the opportunity cost of missed rentals during the construction phase while at least 30 percent and up to 50 percent of the purchase price is tied up with the developer. A lot can change in 18 to 36 months; sometimes units that were sold pre-construction come back on the market just as they are ready to be delivered. This might be a good compromise depending on your circumstances.

sentially a cash deal with payments spread out over the construction period) and up to 7 percent for a 12-year term. Many developers offer pre-construction-to-mortgage packages although not on all of their products. Developer financing is very structured, and you will have to accept the terms offered with no modification. Seller carryback, on the other hand, is a completely different situation. Because it is a one-time, one-person offer, the sellers can often be persuaded to accept a more creative financing situation. They are also much more flexible on price as a general rule. In June 2017, the average home seller accepted offers of about 85 percent of the original asking price per the multiple-listing service (MLS). While each deal is individual, it would not be surprising

to see a seller accept 35 percent cash down payment with the remainder financed at 6 percent amortized over 15 years and with a balloon payment at the end of five years. Working with your MLS-BCS member agent, you can decide which options are best for your situation. With so many new projects under way, there is sure to be one tailor-made for your needs. Y Carol S. Billups is broker-owner of Cabo Realty Pros, a full-service real estate firm in Cabo San Lucas. After more than 17 years, she still loves working with clients to find the perfect property and buy it safely. Billups can be reached by email at carolbillups@hotmail .com or by phone at 044-624-147-7541 in Cabo or (760) 481-7694 from the United States or Canada. You can search the entire multiple-listing service inventory for free on her website, www.caborealtypros.com.

Are you paying cash, or do you need financing? Commercial mortgages are still rare in Los Cabos, so most financing is seller carryback or developer financing. Some are getting quite competitive in offering attractive packages. Tramonti, a new condominium complex on the tourist corridor, offers a full array of financing packages in both peso and U.S. dollar denominations with interest rates as low as 0 percent for the shortest term (esLos Cabos Magazine | Fall 2017

O U T D O O R S The 1,000-mile Baja Peninsula stretches from the U.S.–México border to Land’s End, the point where the Sea of Cortés marries with the Pacific Ocean. It’s a two-state peninsula that is home to some of the country’s most interesting cities—Cabo! La Paz! Loreto!—and most sensational beaches. But there’s a lot more to Baja to be explored, including an untrammeled desert-like outback, hidden waterfalls, and epic dunes.

For the ultimate Cabo selfie, consider the satellite tower hike that begins near the entrance to the Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Resort on the Pacific Ocean side of Cabo San Lucas. It measures nearly 1,100 feet long and hovers about 170 feet above ground at its lowest point. Crossing it by foot or ATV provides stellar views of the canyon, especially during wetter months when it’s lush with green trees and other vegetation. The park is also home to several high-adrenaline activities like bungee jumping, off-road ATVs and UTVs, and a giant swing 300 feet from the ground. Instagram is awash in Los Cabos beach photos. There are pics of Médano and Palmilla, Lover’s and Chileno, Hotel Beach and Cerritos. And while it’s easy to get fed up with oversaturated selfies, we have a voracious appetite for all those beach shots. Here we take a look at some of the region’s most famous playas. Médano Beach (Playa el Médano) One of the world’s most recognizable beaches, this picturesque, two-mile stretch of sand in downtown Cabo San Lucas is known for its close proximity to the arch at Land’s End and landmark spots like the Office, Mango Deck, and now Breathless. While you can enjoy moments of quiet early in the day and from sunset on, Médano buzzes throughout the day with families and coeds on wave runners, stand-up paddleboards, banana boats, and, of course, visiting the row of beach clubs. This is, after all, the most swimmable beach in Cabo San Lucas. Water taxis shuttle tourists around the Cabo San Lucas Bay, while others take wave runners or kayaks to Land’s End. Still others enjoy peak viewing parasailing with Cabo Expeditions or powered hang-gliding with Cabo Sky Tours. Here, too, you’ll see city-size cruise ships park, as their guests take a day to explore Cabo San Lucas. Cerritos (Playa Los Cerritos) North of Cabo San Lucas, you’ll find Cerritos Beach, which has earned legions of fans because of its wonderful swells and breaks that make for a spectacular surfing experience. You’ll hit Cerritos on your way to Todos Santos, the famed artist colony. The beach is so awesome, though, that it’s likely you’ll not want to leave. There’s a lot to do here. Mario Surf School owner Mario Becerril Zayas says, “This is actually one of the best beaches in México to learn how to surf because there are no rocks. For the more serious surfer, some of the best waves are right next door at San Pedrito, a place Americans refer to as Pescadero Beach.” The Cerritos Beach Club features a beachfront restaurant and bar. Chileno Bay (Playa el Chileno) When it comes to my favorite beaches, a third can’t-miss playa is Chileno Bay. It has consistently earned Blue Flag status for excellence by the Foundation for Environmental Education for its water quality, safety, and services. Located along the tourist corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, Chileno is a popular spot for tourists and locals, especially on the weekends. In addition to excellent snorkeling conditions—near and farther out in the Los Cabos Magazine | Fall 2017

bay—the recently renovated facilities include wooden palapas, umbrellas for rent, and an on-site bathroom. There’s plenty of parking, including handicap access. This is a beautiful spot that is beloved by people, but not yet a hotspot for strolling vendors (as you’ll see in some other popular beaches). Widow’s Beach (Playa Las Viudas) Located off the main highway near Santa María and Chileno, this is a favorite beach for those seeking the quiet of a secluded beach. While there has been a lot of construction of late, there’s still a lot to enjoy here, including out-of-thisworld volcanic rock formations. Santa María (Playa Santa María)

Palmilla Beach (Playa Palmilla) Located on the southern edge of San José del Cabo, near the grounds of the famed One&Only Palmilla, this beach offers excellent swimming in a protected cove. The resort area was one of the first to attract the Holly52

wood jet set back in the 1950s. How great is the swimming here? It’s now the starting point for the swim stage of the annual Los Cabos Ironman competition. It’s easy to get here; just follow signs for the Palmilla exit of the tourist corridor and take advantage of the public parking. Costa Azul (Playa Costa Azul) Surfers love Costa Azul, the annual site of the international Cabo Surf Open and a neighbor of Palmilla. There are great burgers and beers at the seaside Zipper’s Restaurant and Bar, but that’s not why people flock here. Instead, it’s all about the epic surf breaks found at Zippers and the Rock. For those same reasons, swimming at Costa Azul is risky and recommended only for seasoned surfers. Lover’s Beach (Playa del Amor) Here’s another iconic Cabo San Lucas beach. The nearest beach to Land’s End, Lover’s Beach is accessi-

ble only by water taxi from the Cabo San Lucas Marina or Médano Beach (prices average $8–$12 U.S.). The swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking conditions are great here on the Sea of Cortés, and it’s only a short walk over to Divorce Beach, which faces the Pacific Ocean. Keep in mind, the misnomer Pacific Ocean is anything but calm: Don’t swim or venture out into the water. Cabo Pulmo The East Cape is home to several incredible beaches, but the most famous—and rightfully so—is Cabo Pulmo, a marine reserve that’s home to some of the world’s best snorkeling and scuba diving conditions. You’ll want to rent a car or arrange a tour to get to Cabo Pulmo (it’s a bit of a drive, but totally worth it). See map on page 96. Make sure to pack a waterproof camera! For complete beach listings, visit www.cabosanlucasbeaches.com. Y

Next door to Chileno Bay is Santa María Beach and its swim-friendly cove and recently renovated palapa shade area. The lovely horseshoe-shaped beach is the quiet, serene sister of the busier Chileno Bay. Santa María features clear water, high-visibility snorkeling, and calm waters for swimming. All of this has helped the cozy beach remain one of the two more popular snorkeling tour stops offered by several activity tour companies like Cabo Escape, EcoCat, SunRider, and Cabo Expeditions. The new 40-acre resort and residential development called Montage Los Cabos has transformed the area, and now it is an improved, higher-quality, visitor-friendly, little getaway. There are a few vendors offering cold refreshments and healthy mixed fruit at Santa María. (The sand farthest away from the ocean is a bit coarse.)

Eat Your Veggies There’s nothing boring about these vegetarian dishes By Sandra A. Berry

Vegetarianism has been practiced since ancient times, but gone are the days of boring, predictable dishes. Today’s vegetarian menu options—especially in Los Cabos—go beyond steamed vegetables, brown rice, lentils, and tofu to offer a plethora of delectable choices from around the world. Mediterranean-style diets emphasize plant-based food, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts. Replacing butter with healthy fats such as olive oil and canola oil, and using herbs and spices instead of salt to flavor foods are also good choices. We are fortunate to have several excellent Italian restaurants in Los Cabos that cater to vegetarians and anyone who is health conscience while seeking tasty food. Chef Stefano Miotto of La Dolce (www.restauranteladolce.com) hails from northern Italy and has many requests for vegetarian dishes at his popular Italian restaurant. His wait staff is eager to serve items such as spinach and cheese ravioli; fettuccini primavera; cannelloni; spaghetti puntanesca, with a sauce of a mélange of vegetables; and pomo-

doro, a sauce of fresh tomatoes. “Any pizza can be made with veggies,” he says, “and we have gluten-free pasta available all the time.” Another popular Italian eatery is Romeo & Julieta (www.restaurantromeoyjulie ta.com) with Italian-born chef Matias Forte at its helm. Forte says many items on its menu attract vegetarian diners. Popular items include a portobello stuffed with spinach; cream of asparagus and artichoke soup; minestrone, a tradi-

tional Italian-style vegetable soup; pizza with goat cheese, Gorgonzola, figs, and pears; pasta with burrata cheese, basil, pine nuts, and organic olive oil; and risotto with wild mushrooms. For those pescatarians who eat fish and seafood, several dishes are worthy of this category; try the shrimp linguini and bluefin tuna with sesame and herb crust. Chef Antonello Lauri, another Italian native, invites guests to enjoy the flavors of his homeland at Invita Bistro (www.invitabistro.com), whose signature dish is eggplant parmigiana; it’s a popular item requested by vegetarians. Other dishes include fresh salads, yummy bruschetta topped with tomatoes, garlic, and basil, as well as fusilli primavera. Invita Bistro’s house-made breads and foccacia are legendary. Paolo della Corte serves as executive chef for Sunset Mona Lisa (www.sun setmonalisa.com) and its sister restaurants, Sunset Point and Pan di Bacco. He serves many dishes indicative of his native Naples, such as mushrooms baked with mozzarella; Gorgonzola salad; mushrooms fettuccine; risotto of the day; and tagliatelle with black truffle. When we spoke, he reminded me that all his desserts are vegetarian. At Sunset Mona Lisa, you can try the passion macaron, warm red fruit crumble, or hazelnut iced parfait. The Sweet

At Alcaravea Gourmet (www.alcar aveagourmet.com), a vegetarian can make a meal on appetizers alone. Start with roasted veggie antipasto, mushrooms that are sautéed with white wine then baked, or mushrooms stuffed with sundried tomatoes and artichokes. You can then move on to salads, including Caprese with heirloom tomatoes and basil (a personal favorite) or spinach salad. Pita bread is inviting with various veggie toppings.

With its two Los Cabos locations, the Japanese restaurant Nick-San (www .nicksan.com) offers plenty of vegetarian options. One great option is vegetable tempura, even if you usually avoid fried foods. Tempura is light and crisp, rather than greasy. Pot stickers (or “gyoza”) is a popular veggie dish and may be steamed or pan-fried. Soba noodles, made from buckwheat flour, are a common ingredient in Japanese cuisine, often served in a plain broth or in a chilled salad. Soba is the base for a number of traditional Japanese dishes, a handful of which are vegetarian. Miso soup is an-

other one of the foods you’ll find, and it is usually, though not always, vegetarian (and vegan). The basic ingredients are miso, seaweed, and tofu, and a little soy sauce, sesame oil, or other seasonings to flavor a simple broth. Indian cuisine—with its liberal use of healthful and flavorful spices and herbs like ginger, cinnamon, coriander, and turmeric—is full of antioxidants. The presence of lentils, garbanzo beans, and herbs in many dishes also makes Indian food a high-fiber and vegetarian- and vegan-friendly option. Namaste, the Indian Kitchen (624-218-0820) is a great addition, bringing yet another bit of global flavor to Los Cabos. Green cuisine is becoming more popular; veggie restaurants are cropping up that cater to the rising demand for meat-free dining options. There is a relatively new restaurant in Cabo San Lucas called Mako Vegan & Veggy Restaurant (624-157-3716), which serves lunch and dinner with a variety of meatless items such as sopes, corn masa with nopal (cactus); puff pastry stuffed with goat cheese; and bread with broiled zucchini and bell pepper. Tacos are filled with a house vegetable stew and served with guacamole and salsa. Pizzas and calzones are available, including a sweet rendition with apple or pear in syrup, goat cheese, cream cheese, nuts, and sunflower seeds. A vegan cheese is offered with tostadas.

It’s easy to find vegetarian options among starters, like the salad (top) at Alcaravea Gourmet and the miso soup (bottom) at Nick-San.

66

Los Cabos Magazine | Fall 2017

Vegetarian food is no longer for a small minority but rather the mainstream. Indeed, vegetarian cooking is enjoying a makeover, prompting meat eaters to put down their steak knives. New green cuisine is tapping into the rise of the “flexitarian,” the occasional vegetarian who is helping to shrink his waistline by eating less meat. Vegetarianism has been buoyed by the same health-conscious wave that has drawn consumers in unprecedented numbers to low-fat, vegetarian, and organic foods. The trend of being fit and healthy will stay for a long time. Y

Chef Enrique Díaz Gerard authors a menu brimming with Mediterranean fare that diners have come to acknowledge and appreciate as an unforgettable evening dining experience. But just as the evening meal at Alcaravea Gourmet has become a special occasion for many, having lunch here is a very popular daily occurrence—especially for businesspeople in downtown Cabo San Lucas. Three-course, all-inclusive luncheon daily specials are available from noon until 4:30 p.m. with a choice of fish, fowl, beef, or pasta for approximately $15 U.S. A choice of crispy salad or soup (traditional minestrone or creamy vegetable) is offered along with refillable iced tea or lemonade, followed by a choice of entrée. Each day there is a different dish. Examples include seabass topped with pesto; top sirloin with marsala wine sauce and mushrooms; chicken breast with eggplant baked in tomato sauce; and pasta in butter with tomatoes and olives. Each entrée is accompanied with either pasta with cream or tomato sauce or vegetables. A different dessert comes with the meal;

it might be a chocolate brownie and a dollop of vanilla ice cream; a square of mango and yogurt mousse topped with a mixed fruit compote with whipped cream; or profiterole, a miniature cream puff filled with whipped cream. None of these desserts is too overwhelming, but rather they are just the right size to satisfy the sweet tooth. Of course, you can opt to order anything off the dinner menu; these tasty creations are available during the lunch hours, too. Azul When the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort unveiled its made-over space, it included Azul—a subzero tequila, mezcal, and Mexican-style tapas lobby bar featuring a mind-boggling collection of tequila. Cocktail connoisseurs will appreciate the handcrafted cocktail menu, with standout concoctions like the Rosemary Paloma and Tepache Collins. The 160-seat venue also features breathtaking ocean views and a tapas menu that wows: Think tempura tacos, grasshoppers (here known as “chapulines”), and slow-roasted pork sopes. The signature dish at Azul is its guacamole with grasshoppers and mezcal. To prepare it, the grasshoppers are carefully washed and toasted on a comal (a traditional clay cooking tool), then chefs season them with lime juice and spices. The crunchy grasshoppers are delicious and the perfect thing to dip into Azul’s fresh guacamole. What drew people to this oddly placed spot in sleepy Cabo San Lucas? The expertly curated music lineup and bar were great reasons to come. One of the region’s most popular events is Sammy Hagar’s annual birthday bash, which this year includes four days of festivities. These are epic celebrations featuring music, drinks, food, and more. Of course, Cabo Wabo’s continued success is due in no small part to an awesome kitchen that features a rock-solid menu. The open patio bar serves beverages and snacks, while the upper terrace features dishes for lunch such as the famous lobster tacos or the Waburrito, a huge burrito stuffed with chicken, tomatoes, and cheese. Planning dinner before a night at the club? Start with pan-seared sea scallops served with Cabo Wabo tequila butter or vampiros (crispy corn tortillas piled with Oaxaca cheese, refried black beans, and grilled beef fillet). The chile-and-cream-cheese-stuffed mushrooms are another favorite starter. The entrée menu is compact but mighty. It’s headlined by a lobster burrito (sautéed lobster, onion, tomato, and garlic are deglazed white wine and finished with heavy cream). Other standout main course options include jumbo shrimp in a cilantro-honey glaze and the panseared beef tenderloin. For dessert, opt for the lemon or chocolate and caramel tart or banana bread pudding.

If you’re looking for authentic flavors, go where the locals go— especially for lunch. Here at Campestre Restaurant Bar, you’ll find a bustling and colorful dining hall alive with families, executives, and tourists enjoying two-course specials of the day at only $99 pesos. A white board has the specials, which change daily, with a starter of soup such as corn chowder. A beverage of the day served in a pitcher is included; think flavored orange water, lemonade, or horchata. Today’s entrée might be a choice of steak with sauce, pork chuleta (pork chop) in salsa, or a chile relleno with shredded chicken and cheese covered in a rich tomato sauce served with rice and beans. Another day entrées may be rajas con pollo (green chiles with chicken) in a cream sauce or chicken enchiladas. If you’re in luck, you will be there when liver and onions are offered. Of course, you can order from the menu. Popular are fajitas, including fish fajitas, again with servings generous enough for two. you’re magically cast into a Japanese garden setting. There are two tables where water runs through the tops of the tables and then two small waterfalls that cascade into a Koi pond. A water wheel adds to the ambience that you’re next to a small stream in the forest. There are two teppanyaki grills in the outside garden area. As you walk up a small flight of stairs and enter the restaurant, the floor you’re standing on is made of thick glass with a Zen garden below. You usually go to a restaurant for the food, but Daikoku throws in a spiritual experience along with the food, has a very warm and hospitable staff, and air-conditioning. There are many sushi restaurants in Cabo, but Daikoku is one of a kind. To my knowledge, it’s the only one to offer bluefin tuna, the emperor of the ocean. The best cuts are from the belly, and from a 400-pound tuna, you may get only a couple of kilos. If you love tuna, you must give this a try and you will not be disappointed. If you’re a meat lover, try the filet mignon, which is cooked on the teppanyaki grill and served with assorted vegies. The menu also includes chicken and shrimp and other exotic things to choose from. If you’re into sake, Daikoku has a variety of sakes from Japan. The word is out: Ángel Carbajal has opened a new restaurant. If you’re a resident or a regular visitor to Los Cabos in the past 20 plus years, that news means something. Carbajal’s chance meeting with Japanese chef Masayuki Niikura in Los Angeles in 1986 had far-reaching consequences for the first California. The two collaborated to open Nick-San in 1994, pioneering the fusion of traditional Japanese cuisine with Mexican accents and ingredients, forever changing the face of the Cabo San Lucas dining scene. Prior to Nick-San, fine dining in Cabo San Lucas was virtually nonexistent; with local restaurants focusing on fresh local seafood and Mexican comfort food fare, served up in casual surroundings. Since Nick-San, Los Cabos has emerged as one of the most creative culinary destinations in México, drawing a host of celebrity chefs and spawning myriad pan-Pacific fusion cuisines. The success of the Nick-San brand subsequently led to additional restaurants in the Shoppes at Palmilla, just outside San José del Cabo, and in Nuevo Vallarta and México City. But after 23 years at the helm of Nick-San, Carbajal was looking for a new challenge. Hence: Fat Tuna Copas y Cocina. The sleek 80

three-level restaurant is set in the heart of the Land’s End city’s nightclub district—it sits on the same block as latenight meccas Mandala and El Squid Roe—and showcases all the seafood mastery one would expect from Carbajal (think spicy octopus with three chiles, lime, garlic, Himalayan salt, and quinoa), as well as a generous selection of steaks (including a Wagyu rib eye with ponzu and sesame oil pearls, and flank steak with garlic fries). The real eye-openers, however, are found on the pasta menu; it features delicious options that, in their finished form, often seem as much Mexican dishes as Italian. Gnocchi with chorizo? Black risotto with huitlacoche? Pizza with arrachera? Welcome to the wonderful world of Ángel Carbajal. Local press and fine dining connoisseurs gathered April 28 for a private cocktail party to celebrate Carbajal’s latest project. A state-of-theart elevator whisked VIPs from ground level to the rooftop, where they were fêted in grand style with top-shelf tequila cocktails and what seemed an endless succession of delicious hors d’oeuvres, before settling in for a more thorough examination of the bill of fare. Chef Emanuele Olivero’s beef carpaccio at La Deriva highlights his signature ability to showcase premier ingredients simply and effectively.

Celebrated Italian chef Emanuele Olivero is known for his commitment to fresh, high-quality ingredients and his singular ability to prepare them in a way that allows each to shine. His new restaurant, La Deriva, is the perfect showcase for Olivero’s talents. The glass-enclosed restaurant and its terrace offer incredible sea views. Start with carpaccio di manzo (beef tenderloin with arugula and Parmigiano–Reggiano) or cozze al gorgonzola (mussels in white wine with Gorgonzola and rosemary), and you’ll know you selected the right spot for a romantic evening or any occasion. As a second course, choose from fish, fowl, or beef prepared as only a true Italian can do, with a touch of vino, fresh organic veggies, and just the right seasonings. Pastas, porterhouse, and organic chicken are all prepared to order to enjoy with your favorite wine. Nick-San Palmilla On our last trip to Nick-San Palmilla, we started with a Champagne cocktail from the Champagne Bar at the Garden to get ourselves into the ambience. The chef sent an amuse bouche of whitefish sashimi served with truffle oil. And we continued with a jicama tartar made of seabass, jicama, chasoba, and a refreshing citrus dressing. Try this dish with the house sauvignon blanc so you will be able to appreciate even more the fruity sides of the wine and of the dressing as well. While Pan di Bacco is known by late-night revelers for its extraordinary pizzas, fine wines, and special cocktails, few know of its bountiful breakfast-brunch menu. Pancho’s Restaurant This downtown Cabo San Lucas institution is a living, breathing celebration of the country: its history, its food, and spirit (tequila, of course). Named for one of México’s most famous historical figures, Pancho’s is dedicated to preserving the country’s legacy of good food, good drinks, and good times. Outstanding seafood includes whole grilled red snapper, lobster, and fresh fish. A special may include chicken stuffed with cuitlacoche topped with poblano and panela cheese sauce. For an enjoyable experience, sign up for one of three tequila tastings in its tequila room and receive a “Master of Tequilas” certificate. Reservations suggested. Peacock’s Restaurant As part of the renowned Mi Casa family of restaurants, this Médano Beach district restaurant subscribes to an ultra-fresh and organic approach to fine dining: Produce is grown locally on the restaurant’s own organic farm in nearby Pescadero (visit the website to learn more). Chefs favor non-commercial fish and source it from locals. And beef is purchased exclusively from a Sonoran ranch that does not use growth hormones or GMO corn in its feedlots. The results are undeniable. The menu dances from Europe to the Americas, demonstrating both whimsy and purpose. Try the rice paper veggie rolls with a mushroom vinaigrette or the grilled octopus with grasshoppers. The restaurant also makes handmade pizzas and tlayudas. D I N I N G Pitahayas Chef Volker Romeike’s standout Sheraton Grand Los Cabos Hacienda del Mar restaurant has wowed guests for more than two decades. Not only does it offer stunning views of the Sea of Cortés but it’s a vast celebration of culinary wizardry. Pitahayas debuted in 1995 with an innovative Pacific Rim concept and dramatic palapa roof. The restaurant and the menu underwent makeovers in 2015. In addition to a more modern look for Pitahayas, Romeike made over the menu to blend Mexican and Asian flavors. The results have been palpable. He demonstrates his inventiveness with dishes like smoked pork tamal with yellow mole; jicama taquitos with shrimp and char siu; and seafood tortilla soup. The fresh octopus salad is a revelation, while the tuna poke is a delightful summer bite: fresh tuna is paired with watermelon,

Here’s a lovely spot for fast and casual Italian deliciousness right on the Cabo San Lucas Marina. Pop in for lunch or dinner to enjoy not only delightful views of the marina but also a wonderfully curated menu of timeless Italian cuisine. Chef Roberto Macciadris serves pastas, pizzas, focaccia, soups, and salads. Many come with exciting twists. At Presto, you’ll love the added je ne sais quoi cream cheese (here known as “filadelfia”) brings to dishes like salmon carpaccio and pizza; the Viale features bacon, spinach, mozzarella, and cream cheese. On a hot summer night, you may prefer a cool salad. The Caprese is a celebration of fresh, quality ingredients (tomato, mozzarella, basil, balsamic vinegar, and olive oil), while the Caesar uses 90

A choice of octopus or steak roulade was listed on the special menu, with a grand finale of Sfogliatella, a delightful pastry with a lot of history. The regions of the Central Apennines (Umbria, Marche, and Abruzzo) offer a taste of honest, Italian home cooking and was featured at Romeo & Julieta on September 12. Umbria, the only region without a coastline, specializes in meats, and black truffles are home here. The hidden gem of Marche produces olives, and a favorite addictive

Brian Solomon came to Cabo more than two decades ago on a fishing trip and—like many of us—fell in love immediately. He purchased a restaurant on the spot, and Solomon’s Landing was born. A lot has changed in the years since Solomon first arrived. What began as a small taco bar has grown into a sprawling Cabo San Lucas Marina restaurant with an international following and a menu so large it should have a table of contents. This is a great spot to grab a beer and a burger and watch some football or a big fight, but it’s the breakfast op-

One delicious way to explore Italy’s many cuisines is Romeo & Julieta’s “Discover Italy” promotion. Each month—while the promotion lasts— the restaurant features a trip around Italy, showcasing the food of one of its 20 regions. The first installment highlighted Calabria, a picturesque region with diverse food like baked eggplant stuffed with sausage. Next up was Sicily, with cuisine influenced by French, Arabia, and North Africa. Pasta alla Norma was named after a 19th-century opera and was one of the featured dishes as a first course, with Sicilian cannoli as dessert. Next came Campania with a calzone and Caprese salad. 92

The hearty mushroom risotto (top) at Romeo & Julieta is a creamy revelation, especially on a cool fall evening. The sashimi (bottom) at Solomon’s Landing expertly blends spiciness and citrus for a wonderfully refreshing bite.

The views from Sunset Mona Lisa are nearly as spectacular as the menu, which is stellar.

tions we want to focus on in this review: Guy Fieri of the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives raved about the strawberry-banana French toast on an episode of his hit show, and for good reason. It’s divine. But it’s only one of many must-try items in the six-page breakfast menu. The chilaquiles were also featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, and we can’t get enough of the green version. A new addition to the breakfast menu, the drowned eggs (huevos ahogados) are served in juicy black beans with queso fresco, jalapeños, and chopped nopales. The aptly named Benedict from the Sea is like a benediction with two poached eggs, hollandaise sauce, Jack cheese, and sautéed shrimp. Have a sweet tooth? Try the cinnamony apple waffle that comes topped with warm apple compote and fresh whipped cream. Sunset Mona Lisa This evening, while shell blowers were honoring the sunset, a young man from the table in front of us knelt on one knee and proposed to his lovely lady. It is no secret that, when you mix an incredible view with delicious food, romance is inevitable. Michelin-star-trained corporate chef Paolo della Corte brings his love of Mediterranean food from his Italian homeland with polish and pizzazz. You’ll be blown away by outstanding food, service, and ambience. Burrata cheese oozes when cut; here the ball is wrapped with a bow and served with pesto and tomatoes, a great start for what is yet to come. Another starter is raw beef fillet shavings drizzled with olive oil and served with arugula Los Cabos Magazine | Fall 2017

and shaved Parmesan, perhaps followed by organic arugula salad with pears, cranberries, and honey Champagne vinaigrette. Specials may include chocolate clams, softshell crab skewers, or a five-tuna platter. Pastas and risotto might be paired with white clams, gnocchi with diced salmon, or ravioli stuffed with lamb. Seafood includes roasted salmon, local sea bass, or octopus braised with mushrooms. A unique dining experience can be had with beef fillet or pork chops cooked tableside on hot lava rock. Desserts are not to be missed, no matter how indulgent your dinner. Try the “Almost Cappuccino,” a chocolate-formed coffee cup filled with coffee ice cream, milk foam, and crunchy cocoa. Pizza, tapas, wine, and epic views are what you can expect at Sunset Point, the sister restaurant to Los Cabos’ iconic Sunset Mona Lisa and the newer oyster and Champagne bar Taittinger Terrace. Here you can enjoy all the same mesmerizing views of the Sea of Cortés and the nightly Technicolor sunsets, as well as a more relaxed—while still sophisticated—ambience. For a casual date night or evening out with friends, come to Sunset Point to take advantage of the 180-degree vistas and the inspired Italian menu. The tasting menu is an easy and enjoyable way to explore the Sunset Point menu; the three-meal includes tapas or a salad or fresh mozzarella followed by terrina di terracotta (oven-baked pasta) or a gourmet pizza and a dessert (there are straightforward desserts and cocktail versions). Vela The menu is just as lovely as the views at the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort’s outdoor patio dining spot, and that’s saying a lot. Chef Elihu Sepúlveda’s mastery of a refined Italian-themed menu is made unique via a few regional Mexican twists. The fresh local seafood, for example, is spectacular, particularly in offerings like the yellowfin tuna carpaccio and the pan-seared totoaba. The pastas are terrific, as one would expect at an Italianesque eatery. Delicious Italian dishes abound, including traditional specialties like lasagna and spaghetti alla carbonara and the totally untraditional black mole linguini with poached fennel lobster and eggplant ragout.
