the arts for you

public art Part of the Holland Area Arts Council’s role in the community is to oversee public art projects. These initiatives give artists an opportunity to display their talents and creativity while drawing the public into a lively and robust conversation about the arts. From “Pigs on Parade,” “Towering Tulips,” and “South Shore Village Murals,” to the “ReMastered,” “See the Z” and “ReCycled” avenue banners, public art projects delight and engage our community.

On the third Thursday of every month, a House Band of area musicians will play in our Padnos Gallery for backup. We welcome you to bring your own instruments and join in. The first hour (from 5:30 to 6:30) will be designated specifically as a “Slow Jam,” so musicians of all levels should feel welcome to come and play! There will be lots of sharing musical traditions but most of all - lots of fun! This program is FREE and we encourage all ages to attend. There is no requirement to participate in the jam - you can just come and enjoy the music. Summer Programming for Kids Every summer, the Arts Council takes art into the community. Watch for us this year at the Multicultural Festival on Saturday, June 13. We’ll also be at Zeelmania on Monday nights from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. in July and August. Join us for a new art project every week! We close out the summer at Holland’s Farmers Market (date to be decided).

Art for All students play with paper mache.

Bluegrass Jam Sessions take place in the Padnos Gallery. Musicians and viewers are surrounded by art -- music for the ears and eyes!

featured workshops and classes summer workshop Douglas David Oil Painting Workshop Experience hands on the classic principles of painting. Each day Douglas will give a short demonstration with discussions on composition, massing, building form, light and shadow, depth, atmospheric images and how to know when your piece is finished. You’ll study these principles of design and paint while creating a landscape, seascape or streetscape painting, working in your own style so that the finished piece is your own. On the first day, you’ll work in the studio. On the second and third day, you’ll venture out to the beach or Holland’s beautiful downtown. Most importantly, you’ll have class time to put paint to canvas, ask questions, and get one-on-one feedback on your oil painting practice. Supply list will be provided upon registration. Friday, Saturday and Sunday • July 24, 25 and 26 • 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. lunch breaks • $325 About Douglas David Douglas David has painted his way across the country, capturing the beauty and spirit of the things he loves – tranquil country landscapes, sunrises and sunsets on his favorite beaches, a simple pitcher of spring lilacs or peonies, a lemon, lime or a slice of watermelon on a checked tablecloth. Paintings that reflect comfort, warmth, meaning and simplicity; ones that reflect everything important to him: his close-knit family, life-long friendships, creatively fulfilling work and giving his best. A recipient of numerous regional and national awards and honors, Douglas’ teaching is a way of giving back and sharing his journey with those who choose to study with him. Nate Roberts, a music professor at Hope College, began his musical education at a young age in the folk and bluegrass traditions of the Allegheny mountains in New York. He graduated with a degree in jazz performance from Hope College and a Masters of Music from the University of Oregon. Nate teaches mandolin, guitar and banjo lessons, directs Hope’s Folk Ensemble and is active in the performance community, including in the creation of Third Thursday Bluegrass Jam Sessions and the MI Academy of Folk Music. Kyle Nester is the Elementary and Middle School Orchestra teacher at Holland Christian Schools and has been playing the fiddle since he was a wee tot. He trained as a classical musician and music educator and has recently fallen head-over-heals in love with folk music. He can’t wait to teach his students about the common ground that folk, classical, and all music shares. Jared DeMeester, a Hope College grad, just finished his first year of grad school at Western Michigan University, studying jazz upright bass. He’s leaving to pursue two businesses that he started making longboard wheels and silk screening hand drawings. He continues to play and teach bass because he feels music leads to different places and different people. Angelee Berrian, a Hope College grad, studied English and Writing but has always loved vocals. Angelee now sings lead vocals for The Field Hymnal, a west Michigan Americana quartet.

letter from the director: our vision for the future

Staff Lorma Freestone Executive Director Mary Sundstrom

Imagine a shadow puppet stage that invites you to explore the history of the art and experience the thrill of bringing art to life.

Program Director

Picture a gorgeously painted jungle a la Rousseau and imagine yourself transported to another world.

Margaret Foreman

Envision a wacky Rube Goldberg gadget that moves and sings and clangs while teaching about sound and musical scales.

Communications Manager

This is our vision for Cretaive Connections. Colorful mobiles illustrating examples of the elements of art and principles of design will hang from the ceiling. Interactive exhibits designed by local artists and tables full of art supplies, projects and activities will greet visitors. On-the-road carts will engage children and adults outside of the Arts Council’s walls at schools, in neighborhoods and during community events. Based in what was formerly our Mainstreet Gallery, this bright, creative space will inspire curiousity, play and artistic expression.

Carol Vredeveld Business Manager Ken Freestone Facilities Manager

Because West Michigan has developed a reputation for excellence in art, and particularly design, the Arts Council plans to dedicate a space in our center to focus on these themes. Children today are growing up in a highly visual world, surrounded by the images of television, videos, advertising and other media. The human brain has a visual cortex that is five times larger than the auditory cortex. Is it any wonder that students respond so positively when they have opportunities to learn through the visual arts?

Board of Directors

We believe that a children’s museum specifically targeting our area’s most celebrated talents of art and design is a much needed addition to our center and community. We are so excited about this fresh endeavor, and we hope you’ll join us as we pursue a creative community.
