letter from the director As 2016 draws to a close, it’s great to look back on the achievements of the last twelve months. Perhaps most exciting was the June opening of THE STUDIO, our hands-on-art and design space. It has been such fun to see makers and tinkerers of all ages enjoy this new creative playground. We are making our local manufacturing and design community part of the fun by tapping into their creative expertise which will keep the installations fresh and the projects inspiring as we move forward. We also became a partner in the North American Reciprocal Museum Program. This gives members at the $100 level access to member benefits at other museums. Show your NARM card, and you’ll be treated just like a member at over 700 institutions across the country. It’s never been a better time to be a member of the Arts Council! Our community partnerships have blossomed over this past year as well. We’ve developed new class trip programs with the Holland Museum and the Kruizenga Art Museum. In November we held our second annual Nutcracker Ballet Afternoon Tea with the Grand Rapids Ballet Youth Company. This magical event enchanted everyone and sparked more ideas of collaboration between our two organizations. (Stay tuned for more exciting news on that front!) In 2017, we look forward to celebrating our organizations’ 50th year! It will be filled with art classes and workshops, exhibitions and cultural programming. It will also be a banner year. We are launching a new Avenue Banner project for downtown Holland. Once again artists’ colorful, whimsical works will be enlivening our streetscapes and delighting our visitors with fresh designs. We have so much to celebrate and much to look forward to as we welcome the New Year! We hope you’ll join us.

timeless structures: memories built with light november 17 - january 14 lievense gallery Karin Nelson, an award winning and nationally published artist from Grand Rapids, Michigan, is best known for her structures: city buildings, rustic barns ... any manmade form with flat planes to reflect the sun. With the aid of large pallet knives and cheap bristle brushes, she expresses her subjects with masculine lines and strong marks. And yet her paintings strike a warm, welcoming chord with her viewers, transporting them to memories from their past. She accomplishes this by representing the lighting conditions in her scenes with a realistic color palette, even though the subjects are slightly abstracted. arin explains, “I believe the strongest triggers to visual memoK ry are related to light, and the endless combinations that make up its nuances. When I am successful in expressing the delicate, mysterious quality of light in the scene, there is a good chance that others have witnessed that same sight, and are brought to a place of memory. And that’s when the connection occurs between myself and the viewer.”

Calligraphy Workshop-Hand Lettering for the Beginner Instructor: Jane Ewing In this workshop you will learn to letter in script known as Uncials, a lettering style used in the 4th to 8th centuries. With a broad-edged pen you will practice writing the distinct letters of this alphabet. You’ll take home your created manuscript book, the pen and exemplars to perfect and enjoy developing your calligraphic skills. All materials are provided. Big Brush Watercolor Painting Workshop Instructor: Mary Sundstrom Learn to paint watercolor in a bold and expressive way. We get out the big brushes (Japanese Hake brushes), palettes and masking fluid to make simply composed, richly colored pieces. For some this will come naturally, for others it could be the leap of faith you need. This class is for all levels but especially those that have considered watercolor painting too fussy and hard. Bring two 22”x 30” pieces of cold press watercolor paper to class, one tube each of red, yellow and blue paint and a bag lunch. All other supplies will be provided. Abstract Expressionism Painting Workshop Instructor: Bette Delvecchio Are you the next Helen Frankenthaler or De Kooning? In this playful workshop, you focus your painting on color, texture, expression and form! Spend a day moving paint around without concern for representational imagery. Bette shows you how to create a textural base coat and work up from it using color, technique and composition. Acrylic paint, canvas, brushes and palette knives are supplied. This class is for all levels but especially those who are ready to try something new. Bring a bag lunch. drawing Drawing is Key Learn the basics of drawing. Instructor, Sean Sterzer is a master of “Economy of Line” which focuses on excellent composition, and she begins with the techniques you need to create a beautiful drawing or sketch.
jewelry Fused Glass Jewelry Learn basic techniques for fusing glass jewelry from Gini Cooper. Fusing is easy to do even if you’ve never worked with glass before. Lampwork Glass Jewelry Workshop Fire up the torches and join this exciting introduction to basic glass bead-making with Gini Cooper. Through demonstrations, experimentation and instructor guidance, you will learn how to make your own glass beads. Materials are provided and class size is limited.
painting Classic Oil Painting Techniques Learn how to oil paint the old masters way. Instructor John Andersen teaches you what mediums, tools and techniques you need to build a beautiful and traditional oil painting. Color mixing and composition will be demonstrated and discussed.

music Bluegrass Jam Sessions Experience American folk music in this jam session, free and open to the public. All instruments and ability levels are welcome. The first hour serves as a slow jam, with an educational element mixed in. After the first hour, anything goes! Bring an instrument and sing a song, pick quietly in the background, or just sit and listen! We share musical traditions, but most of all we have lots of fun! All Ages

ceramics Ceramics and Clay Sculpture Classes These classes provide expert artist instruction from Instructor Mary Wolter in wheel-throwing, hand-building, texturizing, glazing and firing. Ages 18 & up Clay Date: Ceramic Workshop for Two This fun and creative workshop, led by Instructor Mary Wolter, is for two people! Whether it’s a date or a friend, spend the evening getting your hands dirty. You will be introduced to basic ceramics and the potter’s wheel. Ages 18 & up Ceramics Open Studio Open Studio is available to anyone who has taken a ceramics class at the Arts Council. Currently, you can purchase 8 visits with our Open Studio Punch Cards for $80. Open Studio access includes glazing and firing. Twenty-five pounds of additional clay can be purchased for $30.

general information for students The Holland Area Arts Council offers diverse and exciting classes for all skill levels, and our instructors have impressive credentials and extensive teaching experience. We offer scholarships for those who qualify. For more information call (616) 396-3278 or email helpdesk@hollandarts.org. Refund Policy. No spots are reserved without full payment or scholarship forms. To receive a check refund, withdrawals must be requested at least 5 business days prior to the start of class, and a $10 processing fee will be retained. To receive class credit, withdrawals must be requested before the second class. If you have questions about class placement, classes that are full, age appropriateness, or other issues that are not addressed here, contact our Program Director, Mary Sundstrom, at mary@ hollandarts.org. Make-Up Classes. If a class session is cancelled by the Arts Council, a make-up class will be scheduled. Generally, make-up classes are held the week following the last scheduled class. Photo Permission. By registering for a class, you agree to allow the Arts Council to photograph you or your child for promotional purposes. For 18 years this beautiful facility, situated in Downtown Holland, has been the cornerstone of the arts and the intersection of Holland’s principal cultural organizations. grants The Holland Area Arts Council serves as the Regranting Coordinator for Allegan, Mason, Muskegon, Oceana and Ottawa Counties. The Minigrant program is a grant-giving partnership funded by the State of Michigan through the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) and administered by agencies in each region of the state. Minigrants provide funds for locally-developed, high-quality arts and cultural projects: special opportunities to address local arts and cultural needs and to increase public access to arts and culture.
