Taylor VW’s new facility suits every kind of driver A first-time buyer looking for something economical. A seasoned VW owner seeking an upgrade to a sportier version of their favourite model. A commuter looking for fuel efficiency first and foremost. Regina is full of past, present and future VW drivers, each as unique as the cars they drive — and, with them in mind, Taylor Volkswagen opened the doors of its new 30,000-square-foot facility and stand-alone 2,200-square-foot used-car facility on June 16. The Taylor Volkswagen dealership had outgrown its previous location, which it shared with Taylor Audi, and a move to an exclusive facility was inevitable, said general manager Ryan Williams. “The two worked well together, but then volumes grew so much that we had to separate the facilities. We were bursting at the seams for so many years.”

“Seventy-five to 80 per cent of our customers live in the east and southeast. We did look at other options across the city, but this definitely made the most sense,” he said, adding that the new facility sees much more business in the evenings due to customers stopping in on the way home, whereas at Taylor Volkswagen’s previous location, business tended to dwindle in the late afternoon. “Being located between a commercial and a residential area has worked out very well,” he said.
The location change is just one of the many positive features of the new facility — now dedicated exclusive to Volkswagen — that have vastly improved the experience for local VW owners and buyers. “Customers now have a much better experience bringing their vehicles in for service. Now that we have separated [Volkswagen and Audi], we have a full shop dedicated solely to Volkswagen. Our service capacity has gone up four times because the shop is no longer shared.” The new shop has 10 mechanical bays and nine technicians. Also, as would naturally be expected with such a size upgrade, the facility’s inventory of both vehicles and parts has increased, which, according to Williams, has led to a surge in business.
“We are seeing a lot more sales of both new and used vehicles, and more people coming through the service department’s doors,” he said.
“We are one of the few manufacturers who offer both diesel and hybrid cars. And, for people who do a lot of travelling, those are the most economical,” he said. “VW diesel cars get upwards of 1,100 kilometres per tank. Gas prices going up as they have and will continue to do, diesel cars can give people who commute a lot of savings. You do pay a little more for a diesel engine, and maintenance is incrementally higher than what it is on a gas car, but you get that payback if you’re putting on the kilometres.” Taylor Volkswagen offers diesel engines on almost all of its product line.
Along with the improvements to parts and service, the facility boasts an open, light-filled eight-car showroom, while the previous location could only accommodate three cars in its showroom. There are nine salespeople on hand to meet the needs of any shopper who comes in the door.
“There is something here for everyone, from entry-level cars all the way up to a fully-loaded Touareg,” said Williams. As far who makes up the largest percentage of Taylor VW’s customer base, “our demographic is pretty much split down the middle, male and female, and tends to be made up of younger professionals.”
According to Williams, the typical VW customer tends to arm his or herself with knowledge and understanding by investing time researching models before buying. “They know what they want. They’re tech-savvy and are often drawn to sportier, lessmainstream vehicles.” Iconic sports cars, like the VW GTI, are particularly popular with a large percentage of VW customers, but Williams said that he sees every type of buyer looking for every type of car — new, used, sporty, economical or family-friendly. VW drivers in Saskatchewan, Williams said, are particularly drawn to the most fuel-efficient vehicles available, often because they live in rural areas and log a lot of mileage commuting into Regina.
