Stylish cues for outdoor fall decor Skip the wreaths and scarecrows MELISSA RAYWORTH THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Homes are treated to a measure of effortless outdoor decorating for fall: Nature does most of the work by turning the trees a vivid palette of reds, oranges and golds. Add a pumpkin or two on the doorstep and the look is complete. But sometimes, it takes a bit more creativity to add the season’s colours and textures to the exterior of a home. Designer Betsy Burnham says poorly done fall decorating can look out of place. And as Halloween decorating has become increasingly popular, many homeowners aiming for a festive fall look go overboard with big decorations and harsh shades of orange. But with a light touch

RUSTIC WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY/Hayneedle

To take advantage of the gorgeous autumn weather at his mountain house, designer Brian Patrick Flynn added a modern fireplace. To enhance fall style, every October he swaps summer-toned pillowcases for ones more suited for autumn. and some strategic choices, homes anywhere can be made more attractive through the beauty of the

season. Here, Bur nham and two other designers — Brian Patrick Flynn of the Flynnside Out design blog

and Lee Kleinhelter, owner of the Pieces design store — offer advice on doing outdoor fall decorating right.

AVOID CLICHES

If you’ve been hanging up the same fall wreath on your front door for several

years now, Burnham suggests a fresh approach. “It doesn’t have to be a wreath,” she says. “It can be wheat sheaths. It can be pussy willows. Just something that seems autumnal.” Flynn agrees: “I usually stay away from corn husks as door decor,” he says, “and I also skip things that have been done a million times, like scarecrows. Instead, I like to simply play with yellow- and orangetoned plants, and a variety of pumpkins.” Kleinhelter suggests using “rustic elements to complement this time of year,” such as birch logs, twigs and vines. They can be left in their natural colours or painted white or a soft shade of gold. She also likes decorating with “the fiery fall foliage of ginkgo and sugar maple trees,” which can be potted and clustered together in simple arrangements around a front door or in an outdoor entertaining area.

ENTERTAIN OUTDOORS

“If you’ve got space, an outdoor fireplace will allow you to host guests and also take in the amazing foliage,” says Flynn. “I have an outdoor fireplace in my own mountain house, and I deck it out in fall tones each year and just escape outside all day long.”

“TAKE SOMETHING YOU ALREADY HAVE AND RETHINK IT.” LEE KLEINHELTER Outdoor cushions in summery colours can be replaced with warmer, autumnal shades. And Burnham suggests using clusters of scented candles outside in cinnamon, clove or other seasonal fragrances. Depending on your climate, Flynn even suggests hosting autumn dinners outside. Space heaters and a roaring fire can keep guests warm. And candlelight on the table adds to the drama.

like the natural elements in your yard, and come up with a creative yet simple way to use them.” White lights you bought for Christmas decorating can be just the thing to make fall outdoor decorating look special. “We have jumbo vine balls we are going to wrap in lights and scatter in the yard,” Kleinhelter says, in “a ‘pop art’ kind of way.” Burnham agrees: “You can never go wrong with white lights,” she says. “You can do a lot with just framing your door with really beautiful white lights,” perhaps woven through twigs or vines. The look is glamorous, and also practical: If you’ve lined your front door with white lights woven through twigs in the fall, simply add some pine or holly branches to the mix when it’s time to decorate in December.

All three designers are fans of white gourds and white pumpkins. “We use them every year one way or another,” Kleinhelter says. “Grouping them on table settings or outside in multiples by the door is an easy arrangement.” You can decorate with gourds and pumpkins without adding “that crazy pumpkin orange” to your home’s exterior, Burnham says. Instead, pick other shades of orange and yellow that feel seasonal but aren’t quite so bright. “Orange and yellow are the two colours most associated with fall style,” Flynn says. “Stick with mustard tones rather than canary yellow, and as far as orange goes, it’s best to use burnt pumpkin tones rather than red oranges or yellow oranges.” You can also mix in neutral shades of tan and soft brown. “And I always like to throw my own spin on it all,” Flynn says, “by incorporating black.”

MAKE IT RIGHT

Is your home ready for winter?

MIKE HOLMES Make it Right

WAYFAIR

Noyo Home’s slip-covered headboard features a clever trompe l’oeil knit pattern in a turquoise poly-blend fabric.

Sweater decor heats up KIM COOK THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Cosying up in a favourite sweater is one of the distinct pleasures of autumn. And this fall, designers and retailers are stitching up sweater motifs on an array of home decor. Hannah Millman, executive editorial director of crafts for Martha Stewart Living, says knitwear is a trend with near-universal appeal. She suggests some do-it-yourself projects. “Almost everyone has a memory of a sweater that makes them feel good. What’s so great about repurposing one of your own is that you get to keep it and enjoy it,” she says. “And if you’ve found one at a market that someone may have knitted back in the ’40s, you can give it the opportunity to be loved again by making it into something new.” One of Millman’s favourite ways to reuse sweaters: Collect a bunch of creamyhued ones, in one type of knit or perhaps several, and cut them up to make a blanket, pillow or rug. You’ll find

project ideas and instructions at Marthastewart.com and Countryliving.com, where there are also how-tos for lamps, bowls and sconces. “Creating a little story on pillows using pieces of old sweaters is a big trend,” she says. Look for pieces in gradations of colour — perhaps pale pink to deep cherry, or sky blue to indigo. Or search tag sales and thrift stores for sweaters with nature motifs to create a group of woodland pillows. Those dreadful Christmas sweaters of old can be transformed into new Christmas stockings; other heavily patterned and colourful sweaters make great rugs. Millman suggests using a rotary cutter and anchoring the edges of a loose knit with masking tape while cutting, to reduce fraying. She also advises washing any woollens in hot soapy water in case there are moths. If you then machinedry the sweater, you’ll end up with a “felted” material, popular in crafting circles, where the fibres smush together. If you line-dry the garment, the knit pattern

remains and the fibres stay separated. If you aren’t up for a craft project yourself, don’t worry — there are lots of stores offering sweater-themed items.

Bedroom and Living Room Wayfair’s got One Bella Casa’s My Christmas sweater pillow and Rizzy Home’s cable-knit pillow. Noyo Home’s slip-covered headboard comes in a turquoiseand-white knit photo print, like a sweater for your bed. (wayfair.com)

Accessories Lauren Weege’s Fair Isle and caramel cable-knit vase covers are snug and stylish. (laurenmarydesign.com) Anthropologie’s got a collection of ceramics printed with knitwear patter ns, including bowls and bakeware. (anthropologie.com)

Flooring Sweater-knit wool rugs are in West Elm’s fall collection. Betsy Olmsted’s Acid Knit rug for Deny Designs prints a knit pattern in psychedelic hues on a flat-weave rug. (westelm.com)

There’s the usual stuff homeowners do to get their homes ready for winter: clean the gutters, rake the yard, wrap the trees. They’re all smart moves but there are also bigger projects with big payoffs.

1. Check the roof

Your roof protects your home from the top down, shielding it from rain, snow, hail, ice, wind — you name it. If there’s a problem on the roof, there’ll be a problem inside your home — maybe not right away, but give it a couple of seasons. You’ll start to see the signs: leaks, animals in the roof, ice damming and heat loss like you wouldn’t believe. Check to see if any shingles are missing or look worn out. Are they buckling, curling, or missing sections of granules? When cleaning the eavestroughs, if you find large amounts of asphalt granules that’s a red flag for re-shingling. Don’t wait for spring to do roofing work; do it now, if you can. Most good roofers will be booked, but a couple might be able to squeeze you in by early December, which isn’t too bad if Mother Nature’s on our side.

2. Add extra insulation

Your attic is a cold zone. It must be the same temperature as outside. If your attic doesn’t have enough insulation, those outdoor temperatures will make their way inside, which is a huge waste of energy and money. And who wants to live in a cold house? Your attic should be sealed from the rest of your home with vapour barrier and

A E R O W O O D

THE HOLMES GROUP

Before winter sets in, homeowners are encouraged to have their furnace serviced by a licensed technician. have a minimum of 30.5 to 38 centimetres of blown-in insulation, which shouldn’t block any vents or soffits. Your attic needs to breathe so moisture can escape and we don’t get things like mould.

3. Clean the chimney

If you have a wood-burning chimney get the flue cleaned by a pro. You should be doing this at least once a year, no exception. Creosote (soot) can build up on the inside of the chimney, which is a huge fire hazard. It’s very flammable. All it takes is just one spark from a burning log and you can have a chimney fire. Cleaning the flue can also reveal if there’s a crack or anything blocking it on the inside. If there is, toxic fumes like carbon monoxide (CO) can enter your home. Gas fireplaces should also be checked out once a year by a technician, to make sure they’re working properly. Do not risk a CO leak.

4. Get the furnace serviced

This is something all homeowners should have done by a licensed technician as soon as possible. Don’t wait for a freezing cold day to find out your furnace doesn’t work.

5. Inspect windows and doors

Old or wor n windows should be upgraded to at least double or triple-pane, low E and argon-gas-filled

models. Check out the framing around your windows and doors, too. Are there gaps? Are they rotting? If they are, I guarantee you are losing heat and letting moisture in. A good window installer will automatically repair the framing. It will cost more but it’s absolutely necessary.

6. Check caulking

If any caulking is brittle, shrunk or cracked, replace it. Bad caulking also lets moisture and drafts intrude. Moisture leads to rot and mould; drafts lead to heat loss. Your home could lose up to 30 per cent of its heat this winter thanks to drafts. Caulking and replacing the seal or weatherstripping on doors and windows can help stop that.

7. Wrap pipes that go through cold zones

Check them in areas such as the crawl space, garage or along a basement wall that isn’t insulated. Insulating pipes helps prevent them from bursting. Doing what you can now to protect your home saves money by preventing repairs and reducing energy use. Do the work now so you can relax over winter and be a few steps ahead next spring. MAINTENANCE

Flush away toilet troubles Flapper valves often need fixing MEGAN COLE THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA — Toilets are one of the most important and misunderstood pieces of equipment in a house. Even though homeowners tend to keep a plunger next to a toilet, it doesn’t mean they know how to fix it when it isn’t working properly. Clogs seem to be an obvious problem, but Scott Armour, pipe trades instructor at Camosun College in Victoria, says there are other common issues that could cause a toilet to run inefficiently. “Homeowners often run into leaky flapper valves,” says Ar mour. “That is a valve in the bottom of the tank. When you press down your handle it lifts up the flapper valve and lets the water flow from the tank to the bowl.” When the valve fails, Ar-

mour says water will leak from the tank into the toilet bowl. If a homeowner suspects the flapper isn’t working effectively, he says it is easy to diagnose by putting a bit of food colouring in the tank. If the food colouring turns up in the bowl, the flapper needs to be replaced. “It is a fairly simple problem to fix,” says Armour. “You have to identify what type of toilet you have, which can be done by just taking the flapper out. It is just clipped on in two places and attached to the handle with a small chain.”

“HARD OBJECTS, OTHER THAN WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE FLUSHED, FALL IN AND GET STUCK.” FRED BRETZKE To figure out which flapper is needed, take the flapper that’s been removed to a plumbing wholesaler, who will be able to match it to a new one that fits the toilet. “You should just replace it

the exact same way you removed it,” says Armour. Homeowners should be aware that some repairs may require turning off the water and draining the toilet tank. Fred Bretzke, instructor at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and columnist for Mechanical Business magazine, says clogs and backed-up toilets often need to be dealt with by a professional plumber. Homeowners can try to remove the clog themselves by using a plunger, but Bretzke says if the backup doesn’t clear or the problem returns, it may be time to call a plumber. “ H a r d o b j e c t s, o t h e r than what is supposed to be flushed, fall in and get stuck,” says Bretzke. “We find common bathroom stuff in toilets like a toothbrush, a comb or kids’ toys. A toilet is shaped like an S inside, so once something gets stuck in there it makes it very difficult to get out.” Bretzke says plumbers often have to drain and remove the tank, then lift the toilet outside where “thumping it” on grass or soft snow — not the sidewalk or as-

phalt — will cause whatever is stuck to fall out. To avoid having things fall into the toilet, Bretzke says homeowners should avoid putting things like candles and other objects on the tank or on the vanity near the toilet. Putting vinegar in the water in the tank is another easy way to keep the toilet flushing properly. “Sometimes the toilet doesn’t flush right, and the water doesn’t swirl all the way around. That is because calcium is plugging the inside holes around the bottom rim of the toilet,” he says. “Vinegar in the tank will flush through the holes, helping clear the calcium buildup.”

A few fresh thoughts on food storage Safeguard against spoilage MEGAN COLE/The Canadian Press

MEGAN COLE THE CANADIAN PRESS VICTORIA — Love them or hate them, leftovers have a place in most Canadian kitchens. But they need to be stored correctly to prevent food-borne illnesses. Storing food properly also helps get the longest life out of groceries. “Bacteria occurs naturally in our environment, so all food needs to be handled with respect and common sense,” says Brenda Watson, executive director of Canadian Partnership for Consumer Food Safety Education. “A n y t h i n g yo u c o o k that ends up as leftovers like casseroles, meat loaf, pork chops or even the lowly baked potato, you want to make sure they are in the refrigerator in a shallow container within two hours of being prepared and cooked,” she said from Kitchener, Ont. An easy method Watson recommends for selecting food storage containers is using your fist to measure the depth. They shouldn’t be deeper than your fist. “You don’t want to try and chill anything in a deep container because it will be too difficult for that dish to chill quickly. Once it is cool you could put it in something deeper,” she says. In addition to using the correct storage vessel, Watson says it is important not to pack too much in the re-

There are guidelines for proper food storage for everything from meat and produce to milk and yogurt. frigerator. Allowing good air circulation will make sure the fridge isn’t working too hard to keep the contents cold. Portioning items including produce and seafood is integral to keeping items both fresh and cold. Lino Oliviera, chef at Sabor Restaurant in Edmonton, says putting vegetables like lettuce in small breathable containers will ensure you are able to enjoy them for many days. “Remove the produce from the original packaging, shake it out, loosen it and put some life back into it,” says Oliviera. “Then put it in containers that have space and store them in the coldest part of your fridge.” When unpacking groceries Oliviera advises taking the time to handle, clean and store everything from fruit

and vegetables to salmon and shrimp. “You handle produce the same way as fish or meat,” he says. At Sabor Restaurant, Oliviera deals with seafood daily, and he takes care of each piece as soon as it arrives to ensure the items he has received are fresh and that they are stored correctly. Even though Sabor doesn’t often freeze its seafood, Oliviera recommends homeowners freeze fish immediately if they aren’t planning to cook it right away. “Seafood keeps really well if it is individually wrapped and frozen,” he says. “I actually advise that for a lot of people, because if seafood is cut up small and wrapped tight and frozen right away, it will be fresher than the fish you have in your fridge for a couple days.”
