Getting colourful up on the roof Right blend can help Victorians fit with neighbours DIANA MARSZALEK THE ASSOCIATED PRESS When a 2011 stor m destroyed their black shingle roof, Carol and Ray Knoff of Vinton, Iowa, opted to replace it with a roof in vintage Victorian colours: a claylike red and grey. Victorian homes typically had red slate roofs, which weathered grey over time, so the blend worked, says Carol Knoff. “It took Vinton a while to like it,” she says, but the neighbours have since come around. The 1901 house is among several Victorians built when Vinton housed one of the world’s largest canneries. Many homeowners these days are shunning monotone roofs of brown, black and grey, and perking things up with colour — blues, reds, purples, greens or combinations of those hues. “A lot of people are going with roofs that stand out on their own,” says Kate Smith, a Newport, R.I.-based colour consultant. “They want

A red-and-grey coloured roof that replaced a storm-damaged black one at Carol and Ray Knoff’s home in Vinton, Iowa. something different that expresses them and expresses their personality.” Which could be a tricky proposition, Smith says: “You want to stand out while still fitting into your neighbourhood.” She admits to being taken aback herself when coloured roofs first came into vogue several years ago. Exterior home colour should always be used judiciously, she says. But it is even more crucial to use it correctly when you’re adding it to a large fixed feature, such as a roof, that is not easily changed with a fresh coat of paint. “Anything that’s permanent needs to blend,” she

says. “You don’t want to have too many colours that aren’t working together.” One trick for doing that, Smith says, is to select roof colours true to your home’s history and architecture, and in natural shades. For instance, Victorian homes originally had coloured roofs — reds, orange, pur ple and g reen were typical — because the colour of the slate varied so much, she says. Homeowners wanting to restore that look should match those subtle tones. “When you saw purple, it was not a bright Barney purple,” she says.

Initial softening will help clean cat mucus stains REENA NERBAS FOR POSTMEDIA NEWS Q: We have a cat who sneezes copious amounts of horrible mucus on everything — walls, leather furniture, rugs and wood furniture legs — essentially anything within nostril reach. I clean up what I know about when it’s fresh, but the dried stuff is as hard as lacquer and just doesn’t come off without a metal scraper. (Now, before the howls of abuse hit me, this is not a veterinary issue. He has been to many vets, with a variety of ultimately unsuccessful treatments, totally depleting my bank account, with the ultimate pronouncement that “some cats just do this. You need to just live with it.”) I have tried glass cleaner, spray cleaners, baking soda and vinegar, all to no avail. Elbow grease just takes off as much paint as it does boogers. Do you have any suggestions, especially for painted walls and leather couches? It’s just ‘snot’ nice to live like this. Many thanks. A: The trick is to soften and remove the mess without damaging the paint. In order to soften the mess, you will need to wet it and soak the area. Take wads of toilet paper and soak them in water. Smack the toilet paper onto the mess and leave for an hour. The moisture will soften the area making it easy to scrub with dish soap, water and an abrasive cloth. If you don’t want to use the toilet paper trick, use a spray bottle filled with water. Spray the area repeatedly to soak it before using a plastic putty knife to remove the mess. This method is not as effective as the toilet paper method which actually traps water onto the surface. According to a cat expert I spoke with, if this happens regularly, you should consider keeping a journal to figure out what induces the sneezing — for instance, food or a treat with a certain ingredient, cleaning (which kicks up dust), or litter box use (again, the dust). Q: Any uses for old, stale bagels besides making bread crumbs or throwing them out? A: Cover bagels with peanut butter and throw some birdseed on top. Place or hang bagels outside for birds to feed on.

Preparation helps in hiring a good plumber licensed plumber does not need to carry insurance, but the company he works for does. The minimum liability coverage for most plumbing companies is $2 million, but the pros I work with carry $5 million. Companies that take on bigger jobs will need more coverage, but more liability coverage also gives homeowners more peace of mind and security because they know they’re covered if something goes wrong that was the plumber’s fault. Regardless of the amount, always call the insurance company to verify the coverage and make sure the company’s insurance hasn’t expired. Always do a background check and look at their work history. This applies not just to the jobs they do for the company they work for, but side jobs as well. Look at recent jobs, jobs they finished a month ago, a year ago, five years ago. Older jobs tell you the durability, quality and longevity of their work. Ask them about the different kinds of jobs they do, and how many they personally (not just their company) do each year. The last thing to remember is that good plumbers explain their work. When they meet potential clients, they are clean and presentable, and can explain the job in great detail and in a way you can understand. But if a plumber says, “Yeah, don’t worry. I can do the job. It will cost you this much,” and they don’t explain what they’re actually going to do — for example, how they plan to reroute plumbing lines — then they’re not the right plumber and it’s time to move on.
