Cold Spring Harbor High School held its graduation ceremony on Sunday morning, when 157 students received their diplomas in front of family and friends.

For the 157 members of Cold Spring Harbor High School’s Class of 2018, the June 10 ceremony was the culminating experience of their high school careers. The high school’s field house was packed with family, friends, teachers and faculty who came to congratulate the students and wish them well in their future academic and professional endeavors. Commack High School’s Class of 2018 took the next step on Friday, graduating before a crowd of hundreds. Honored speakers were Raphael Iskra and Matthew Ciurleo, members of the graduating class of 581 students. Iskra used his speech to address something that “has become deeply important to our Commack family: hacky sack.” The game, played with a specific set of rules in Commack, has connected the Commack community, creating circles of friends and laying “the foundation for what’s next to come in our lives,” Iskra said. He also said it has taught students values, such as teamwork and the importance of seizing opportunities. He continued, “Some of us will study at a university. Some will proudly serve in the armed forces. Some will master a trade. And some will enter directly into the workforce.” But, “in any case, whatever our direction may be, we will not arrive there alone. Rather, we will be joining a new circle, waiting for more hacky sacks to be volleyed our way.” With his speech, the ‘time-traveling’ Ciurleo brought his classmates
some advice from the ‘future.’ “As you know, it’s imperative for time travelers not to share too much about the future. I can tell you, however, a single piece of information I learned: The secret to success is that it’s incremental,” Ciurleo said, comparing success to improvement in the game of baseball. “It’s simple enough to tell someone to try harder, but, to what extent? Knowing when to keep pushing, or shift gears to try something new, isn’t always easy… Greatness doesn’t need to come in leaps and bounds, but rather by accruing one more ‘hit.’ It’s not terribly challenging to do just a little more to make ourselves all the better.” Superintendent Donald James commended the Class of 2018 on its accomplishments, including the accrued $45 million in academic scholarships. “As we send them off, I must admit that Commack has given them the very best education that America can provide. There is no doubt that Commack is one of the finest school districts in the U.S. The evidence produced by this class demonstrates itself and its accomplishments. It’s easily one of the most accomplished classes in Commack’s history,” James said. “I congratulate the graduates and their parents as each graduate is a product of your love, dreams and diligence.”

cheered, and the high school band performed “Pomp and Circumstance.” Following the Pledge of Allegiance, which was led by class president Brendan Bouzas, and the high school band’s performance of the national anthem under the baton of Vicki Henson, Principal Carisa Burzynski welcomed and thanked the families, board of education, fellow administrators and community for their support. She also praised the graduating class on its various accomplishments, calling it a class that was “inclusive from the start, and its members “true leaders.” Burzynski also advised the students to be true to themselves. “Listen to the voice inside you because that is truly who you are.” Graduation speaker Ruben Saint Paul took the podium to reflect on the class’ four years at Glenn. He said he did not expect the day to be so bittersweet. “We are all sharing a collective tear of reminiscence,” Saint Paul said. “Glenn has been a
catalyst for our intrinsic change.” Salutatorian Catherine Reyes-Ordonez encouraged her classmates to make positive contributions to the world, and to not be afraid of prompting change. “Stop just saying. Rain Can’t Damper Tornadoes’ Grad Ceremony
Harborfields High School Class of 2018 did not let a little rain put a damper on their commencement exercises on June 23. The graduates, proudly dressed in green caps and gowns, entered the high school gymnasium to “Pomp and Circumstance” by the high school band, as loved ones beamed and waved with pride. Senior members of the high school choir performed “The StarSpangled Banner” and the Harborfields alma mater at the start of the ceremony, which was followed by words of encouragement and lessons from Superintendent Dr. Francesco Ianni. He spoke to the graduates about the importance of time and to “have character and determination in everything that you do.” Salutatorian Sarah Katz also addressed her fellow graduates, calling the Class of 2018 a family and acknowledging the greatness within them. “Sitting among this great crowd are great minds, leaders, soldiers, musicians, doctors, writers, dreamers and people who I believe can change the world or at least light the spark that does,” she said. Valedictorian Emma Johnston also focused on how Harborfields is a family and how moving to the district changed her life. “I learned that Harborfields is truly a magical place,” she said. “It is a place of support and mass synergy and it is a place where every walk of life can come together as a community to bring out the best in each other.” Class President Christopher Burney spoke about his time in the dis-
trict and wished his fellow graduates the best while encouraging them to take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way. Featured speaker Casey Sturm, English teacher, addressed the graduates while speaking of his time spent as a student at Harborfields. “I can’t wait to see how you change the world,” he said. Principal Timothy Russo congratulated the graduates while offering words of advice as they embark onto the next chapter of their lives. “Don’t sit back and not take advantage because you are afraid of failure…embrace the opportunity and enjoy the moment,” he said. “And whatever the results are, you’ll find some satisfaction even if there was adversity.” Russo also presented each graduate with an evergreen tree, symbolizing the foundation and roots of their support system. “Let this be a reminder to you of Harborfields and what you’ve meant to us,” he said. Before the presentation of diplomas, Russo took a special moment to honor Maggie Schmidt, a member of the Class of 2018 who died last year after a courageous battle with cancer. Following Russo’s speech, which told of how Schmidt touched the lives of everyone she met, the board of education presented each graduate with a diploma. After moving their tassels to commemorate the end of their high school journey, the graduates tossed their caps high in unison, officially becoming Harborfields alumni.

A sea of red caps and gowns enveloped the stage Friday evening at Half Hollow Hills High School East as 490 seniors prepared to officially become the graduating class of 2018. Half Hollow Hills Superintendent Patrick Harrigan welcome parents, family and friends to the graduation ceremony, and shared in the sense of pride that filled the auditorium, both on the stage and in the audience. The graduates heard speeches and
words of advice from the top two academic achievers in the class of 2018, valedictorian Andrew Dircks and salutatorian Josh Feig. Dircks will be headed to Cornell University in the fall, while Feig will continue his academic career and the University of Pennsylvania. Half Hollow Hills High School East principal Milton Strong congratulated the class of 2018, and urged the graduates to strive for excellence as they continue their journey in life.

Journey Continues For 357 High School West Grads By Connor Beach

In front of an auditorium packed with family, friends, teachers and classmates, 357 members of Half Hollow Hills High School West’s Class of 2018 took the culminating step in their high school careers last Thursday evening when they became the 40th group of seniors to graduate from the school. Half Hollow Hills Superintendent Patrick Harrigan, who began working in the school district when the class of 2018 entered kindergarten, said he had the opportunity to watch the students grow into outstanding people. “I’ve come to know many of these students and their families for their entire 13 year educational journey, and I share in the pride and excitement that fills this
auditorium tonight,” Harrigan said. Hills West Principal Michael Catapano said that, whether going onto college, the military or the workforce, he was proud of each and every graduate, and that “all are prepared for the challenges of the world beyond High School West.” The distinguished student speakers at the ceremony included salutatorian and National Merit Scholarship winner Irene Anthony. Anthony reflected on the hard work and dedication of the teachers in Half Hollow Hills school district. “The fact that our teachers struggled alongside us in the classroom, holding extra help in the one or two periods they have free, says a lot about their character,” Anthony said. “To all the parents and teachers in the room, we are going to make you proud again one day. I promise you.”

Valedictorian Danielle Fulep, who teachers described as “mature beyond her years,” urged classmates to go out and achieve their full potential in whatever they are passionate about. “Every single person, no matter their GPA or how many AP classes they’ve taken, has an unbounded potential to succeed in life,” Fulep said, adding that her peers should strive to attain a good balance between work and enjoying life. Class president Edward Popolizio presented the class gift, a new display case and an informational ticker, on behalf of the class of 2018. Once the speeches were complete, each of the 357 smiling graduates strutted across the stage to receive their diplomas, officially becoming alumni of the school where most have spent the last four years.

Blue Devils Graduate, Earn $12M In Scholarships Photos/Huntington/Darin Reed
A crowd of around 2,000 turned out to Blue Devil Stadium Friday night to send Huntington’s Class of 2018 off into the future with the high school’s 157th annual commencement ceremony. The early-evening ceremony saw 340 seniors awarded diplomas. The commencement featured a series of touching and sometimes humorous addresses by class members and school and district officials. Collectively, members of the Class of 2018 claimed more than $12 million in scholarships. “While we have to give credit to the community that nurtured us, we also have to recognize that in some ways it
shielded us from the outside world,” said valedictorian Aidan Forbes, who is headed to Cornell University in the fall. “It was our shell and if we are to continue to grow, we must shed it. And that process will be painful. We will leave our old friends behind, although hopefully not permanently, and be forced to find new ones. Whether you are going to college or not, we will all be faced with new, more rigorous challenges. We will also have to find new ways to fill our free time with meaning and purpose. And all of this will be difficult.” The seniors were told they will always have a home in Huntington and be welcome at the high school, and to take

Salutatorian Sebastian Stamatatos, who is headed for Villanova University, used his address to tell several funny short stories and dole out advice. School board President Thomas DiGiacomo, a member of the Class of 1979, recounted some of the highlights of the Class of 2018’s long trek through the district. “Because of these experiences and so many others, both in and out of the classroom you have become the ‘who’ that you are today,” DiGiacomo said. “You’ve come a long way since your first day of kindergarten; over 13 years, which happens to be a total of 2,340 school days. So, as each of you leaves here today, I wish you only the best that life has to offer.” Principal Brenden Cusack gave an especially powerful address. “On an emotion-filled day like graduation day, it is natural for lots of questions to present themselves to you,” he said. “Questions like, ‘What is most important to me?’ ‘What will I be doing years from now?’ and ‘How am I going to live a happy life?’ may be at the forefront of your mind. These questions can be overwhelming and scary, and they are, in fact, completely natural. Over the next few weeks, months and even years, many people will tell you to do what makes you happy. ‘Just do what makes you happy and everything else will fall into place;’ ‘Choose a job that makes you happy and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.’ I’d actually like to challenge that idea. The goal of life is not to just be happy.

The point of all of this is not to simply do things that make you happy. If your goal is just to be happy, you may have a hard time figuring out what that actually means, and you may be missing the bigger picture.” Cusack continued, “Happiness is not the goal. Happiness is the byproduct of a meaningful life. If you are able to decide, over the next few years, what is truly important to you and to the world around you, and you put all of your focus, attention, drive and effort into that one thing, the end result will ultimately be your own happiness. There will be challenges and obstacles as you begin to develop an understanding of what is meaningful to you, but once you do, all of those other swirling questions and ideas will come into focus. You will find order in what might sometimes feel like chaos, and your happiness will unfold for you throughout the years.” Superintendent James Polansky told the group of students that, following graduation, they have a “blank slate” in front of them. “The past, however, is the material that makes up the slate itself. Your parents, siblings, family members, friends, teachers, administrators, neighbors and others have contributed elements to this material. This material will surely impact the pathways you choose and the decisions you make. You will continue to mold a life for yourself based on these choices and decisions. Realize right now, if you haven’t already, that not every choice is going to be perfect. It is important that you learn from less productive decisions; that you grow as a result of missteps.”

537 Tigers ‘Look Up’

Celebrations abounded at Northport High School on June 23 as families and friends paid tribute to the Class of 2018. Across two separate ceremonies, 537 young men and women stepped onto the stage to accept their diplomas and take the next step towards the future. The festivities kicked off with “Pomp and Circumstance,” which was performed by the Graduation Honor Band. Seniors processed down the aisles to their seats, cheered on by family members and loved ones. Student Elizabeth Caccavale led the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a performance of the national anthem by the high school choir. After Principal Daniel Danbusky’s opening welcome to all in attendance, and a harmonious rendition of “Field of Gold,” performed by the high school choir, salutatorian Nicholas Holfester addressed his fellow classmates. He took a moment to reflect on the class’ four years at Northport, and all the years prior, that led each student to graduation. “If I can offer you all one piece of advice for the future, it’s this… look up,” he said. “Look to find the wonder in life – to find the new in the familiar, and the beauty in the ordinary. Look up. Because when you do, a world of possibility awaits you.”
Before officially presenting the Class of 2018 to Superintendent Robert Banzer and the board of education, Danbusky shared some words of wisdom with the soon-to-be-graduates. “Don’t live life as a check-list focused on getting the right answers,” Danbusky said. “It’s important to be right, but not when it comes at the cost of your own development. Always remember: learning is a process. The more you accept the process, the more you’ll enjoy your life.” After the diplomas were passed out, valedictorian Daniel O’Connor stepped up to the podium to address his fellow classmates. “In a sense, uncertainty is nothing new to us,” he said. “We’ve been dealing with it all of our lives. Who knew what elementary school would be like on the first day of first grade? Who knew what dramatic turns our lives would take in high school? None of us had these answers, and yet somehow we learned to embrace the uncertainty. Thanks to our time here at Northport, our education has extended far beyond academics, and we’re ready to step into this new season of our lives, prepared to embrace the unknown.” The seniors then moved their tassels, and exuberantly tossed their caps into the air as new alumni of Northport High School.

Whitman Leaves Mark On 486 Graduates Photos/South Huntington/ Steve Bartholomew
Whitman’s North Gymnasium provides a safe and dry environment for the 486 graduates and their families through Saturday’s ceremony.
On Saturday, as the 486 members of Walt Whitman High School’s Class of 2018 joined their friends and family in the school’s north gymnasium for the annual commencement exercises, co-valedictorian Joseph Van Gostein said his and his classmates’ four-year journey has left its mark on both them and the school. “Over the last four years, we have etched ourselves indelibly across the school, and in turn, the school has
etched itself into our hearts,” Van Gostein said. Co-valedictorian Joshua Joseph, in his address, said members of the Class of 2018, including himself, have grown themselves over their four-year journey at Whitman. “I would have never dreamed of being able to make my own cringe-inducing mixtape in a professional recording studio in my high school as a shy freshman,” he said. “That’s a
testament to the unique creative space that is Walt Whitman High School.” Also taking to the podium were Principal John Murphy, class president Jack Anest, Superintendent Dr. Dave Bennardo and school board President Nicholas Ciappetta, who is also a Whitman grad. Members of the Class of 2018 then walked across the stage to receive their diploma and officially become Whitman alumni.
District employees have the honor of presenting their graduating sons and daughters their diploma. Here, Scott McEntee gets a hug from his proud mom.
