AT THE HEAD OF THE PARADE

Grand Marshal Timothy Rossiter Leads The 2019 St. Patrick’s March After growing up in Brooklyn, earning both his undergraduate and MBA degrees from Long Island University, Timothy Rossiter began walking the streets of the greater Huntington area in the early 1980’s when he joined his late cousin Bob Rossiter, and Rossiter-Gundermann, Inc. in the life insurance industry. Together Tim and Bob furthered their business acumen in the financial services industry; Tim became a Certified Financial Planner and ultimately established Rossiter Financial Group Inc. in 1998. With his office conveniently located at

175 W. Carver Street, Tim has been a fixture in Huntington where he has been spotted around town for many years. When he’s not on the golf course, in his office, or visiting with clients, Tim enjoys spending time with his family (which includes eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren). Tim has held the office of President for The Association of Financial Professionals. A certified hospice volunteer, Mr. Rossiter currently serves on the Board of Visiting Nurse Service and Hospice of Suffolk. Tim is a proud veteran

who presently serves as Treasurer for American Legion Post 360 in Huntington. Taking pride in his Irish heritage, he is a long time active Div 4, Huntington Hibernian. He serves on the Board of Taispean Charities, the charity fundraising arm for Division 4 of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He also heads up the annual AOH Paul Costello Memorial Golf Outing, which supports our local Parish food pantries. Mr. Rossiter reports that he is thrilled and humbled to be the Grand Marshal of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2019

Meet The Collen: Kayleigh McArdle Kayleigh McArdle comes from a long line of active A.O.H members and is extremely proud of her Irish Heritage. Currently a senior at Walt Whitman High School, Kayleigh is involved in several organizations and athletic teams. Kayleigh challenged herself with demanding AP and college level courses. One of the them is AP Spanish where only Spanish is spoken in the class and Kayleigh is one of few members of the class who does not have Spanish speakers at home. As a result of this class and a focus on learning Spanish she will graduate in June with a bilingual diploma. Kayleigh is a member of the World Language, English, and National Honors

Societies. She is also a member of numerous clubs at Whitman including the Girls Leader’s Organization, the Gay-Straight alliance, Sign Language club, and the one that has impacted her the most, the Ambassadors program. Kayleigh has been a co-advisor for her school’s Ambassadors Program since the first year it was offered in her freshman year. In this club students are invited to activities with the special education department of Whitman to create friendships with the children and in the end, improve their social skills. Watching the students grow and learn throughout the years has been such a pleasure for Kayleigh and one her favorite experiences of high School.

After spending years as a competitive gymnast competing and excelling on the state and regional levels Kayleigh transitioned to team sports, playing field hockey and lacrosse from junior high until today. She was a varsity starter on lacrosse and a team captain for the field hockey team this season. Kayleigh has received the Scholar Athlete award from Whitman for three years running. Kayleigh is going through the final steps in the evaluation process for her college choice. It’s between either James Madison University in Virginia or the University of South Carolina to pursue a bachelor of science degree in nursing.

Kayleigh McArdle

Happy St. Patrick’s Day Congratulations Kayleigh, looking forward to what’s to come…

Meet The Colleen: Meghan Molloy Meghan Molloy began volunteering with the Huntington Hibernians when she was 9 years old. She was a Wee Colleen for a number of years and has marched in numerous St. Patrick’s Day parades. Meghan is now a busy senior at Plainedge High School. She is part of the orchestra, president of the Key Club, treasurer of Mathletes, and a member of Best Buddies. An accomplished athlete, Meghan has been a member of varsity cross

country, winter track and spring track and field teams for all four years of high school. Meghan received the manager of the year award for her dedication to the cross country team when she couldn’t run due to a hip injury during her sophomore year. She is also an Irish Dancer for the Innisfree School of Irish Dance where she started dancing when she was 6 years old. This past Christmas, Meghan organized a volleyball tournament at her high school where each player had to bring a

toy. The toys were donated to Bostons Children’s Hospital and the Morgan Center, a preschool for children with cancer. Aside from volunteering at events for the Hibernians, she has also spent time working with the BBQ Brethren and the American Culinary Federation, both groups that cook for those in need. Meghan will be attending college at Lock Haven University where she will be an exercise science pre-athletic training major.

LI’s Largest and Oldest St. Patrick’s Parade

T

he Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) Division 4 will host its 85th annual Huntington St. Patrick’s Day parade on Sunday, March 10, 2019. The parade kicks-off at 2 pm near the Huntington LIRR train station and proceeds north along New York Avenue (Rte. 110) before turning west onto Main Street (Rte. 25A) and ending at St. Patrick’s Church. This grand parade has a rich history dating to the early 1930’s when the nation was in the grips of the Great Depression. Finnegan’s opened the day after Prohibition ended to cater to the growing population of Irish workers. Down the

street, Valencia Tavern opened on the very same day to cater to the Italian laborers. Although times were tough, a great community tradition was started when the entire town came together to celebrate the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade held anywhere on Long Island.

E

ighty-five years later residents continue to celebrate the unofficial start of spring on the second Sunday of March when the St. Patrick’s Parade marches through Huntington village. On Sunday, members of the Irish-American fraternal organization the Ancient

Order of Hibernians will again march dressed in their distinctive gray morning suit tuxedos. At the head of the parade will be Grand Marshal Timothy Rossiter leading bands, schoolchildren and scouts, fire departments and community groups to the reviewing stand at the western end of Main Street. The core of the parade is of course the bagpipe bands and no parade on Long Island can match Huntington’s lineup. Pipe bands from all over the Island and New York City consider Huntington to be one of the finest parades around. This year the parade will include a a

dozen pipe bands, including Clann Eireann Irish Pipe Band, the parade’s lead pipe band for decades. Brooklyn-based Clann Eireann is the oldest, continuous independent Pipe Band in the United States. New York City’s world-class NYPD Emerald Society Band and the famed Northport Pipe and Drum Band are among the kilt-wearing, bagpipe-playing marchers that will delight thousands of spectators on the parade route. This year brings some exciting new parade participants, including the members of Empire State Snow Dogs Association with 100 snow dogs. “Mush!”

ST. PATRICK’S PARADE JOURNAL - SPECIAL TO THE LONG-ISLANDER

Details on the full parade march can be found in this special section of The Long Islander which will hit the newsstands on March 7, 2019.

A

ncient Order of Hibernians members are proud to have their brother Timothy Rossiter lead the division down the streets of Huntington as the Grand Marshal. Timothy is founder of Rossiter Financial Group headquartered in the Gundermann building in the heart of Huntington village. Learn more about AOH at HuntingtonHibernian.com.

ST. PATRICK’S PARADE • 2019 THE SERVICE ISN’T WHAT IT STARTED OUT TO BE AT THE GIANT HOME CENTERS

Brueggemann Funeral Home of East Northport, Inc.

Poor Billy Bob. By now, everyone else has figured it out. The prices really aren’t so great, the selection is limited, and the service, well, let’s just say it isn’t what it used to be. That’s why more and more homeowners are back to shopping at their local stores. Here, consumers can get pleasant service, professional advice, and find quality products like VelveTop.
