The LSO’s pioneering spirit, inimitable signature sound and commitment to serving music – and the people who love music – have been a part of the Orchestra’s unique ethos since its creation in 1904. The Orchestra, which is owned and governed by the 95 musicians who
together on one stage; and the Orchestra returns to Trafalgar Square once again for its annual outdoor celebration, BMW LSO Open Air Classics. The LSO’s work extends far beyond the concert hall too. LSO Discovery, our world-leading education and community programme, which has been running for over 25 years, reaches over 60,000 people from all walks of life every season. The Late Symphonies The great symphonies are among the biggest musical statements imaginable … … bringing the sounds of the orchestra to life in brilliant kaleidoscopes of colour and telling tales that are both epic and intimate. Mahler described it as ‘creating a world with all the technical means available’. For Tchaikovsky, Bruckner, Mahler and Shostakovich, the

Bernard Haitink takes two Ninth Symphonies that were never heard by their composers – Bruckner’s colossal but unfinished work, a monumental expression of his deep religious faith, and Mahler’s valedictory Ninth. ‘We’re serious but we have a good time,’ were the words of Michael Tilson Thomas when asked about how he and the LSO work together. ‘We’re not all that concerned about colouring within the lines.’ Michael Tilson Thomas made his debut with the LSO in 1970, beginning
dozens of recordings, touring Europe, the US and Asia, and performing together in front of Her Majesty The Queen – he now returns to London as Conductor Laureate. In the first of two concerts, he tackles an all-Russian programme, probing the tortured introspection of Tchaikovsky’s ‘Pathétique’, and joined by Lisa Batiashvili for Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No 1. For the second,

Sibelius Symphony No 2
Sir Simon Rattle conducts the UK premiere of a specially written children’s opera. Composed by Andrew Norman, this new work sees the LSO Discovery Choirs embark on A Trip to the Moon, meeting a band of bumbling astronomers and mysterious moon people along the way. Sibelius’ Second Symphony concludes the programme, with musicians from the Guildhall School joining the Orchestra on stage.
