Alongside a set of Strauss orchestral works being performed at the Barbican by conductors Nikolaj Znaider and Sir Mark Elder (on 1, 4 and 8 May), find out more about the composer whose work Also sprach Zarathustra was made forever infamous as the opening theme to Stanley Kubrick’s film 2001: A Space Odyssey. A day ticket includes a morning rehearsal at the Barbican with conductor Sir Mark Elder followed by a talk by Dr Barbara Eichner (Oxford Brookes University) and a performance of Strauss’ Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings, performed by LSO players and Guildhall musicians, at LSO St Luke’s.

The Kronos Quartet performs Steve Reich’s piece for string quartet and tape Different Trains (1988), while Ireland’s leading contemporary ensemble, Crash Ensemble, presents Philip Glass’ Beckett-inspired Company (1984) and Rzewski’s minimalist masterpiece Coming Together – featuring Gavin Friday, former frontman of seminal post-punk band Virgin Prunes.
