TEMPTRACK

How to monitor the temperature of pharmaceutical and biotechnological products efficiently

OBJECTIVES To develop a formula to trace temperatures using RFID

“The system analysed”, explains David Dalla Vecchia, Manager of RFIDea-Zetes, “will combine the temperature sensor and the RFID tag; this can pass information on in real time”.

KEY DETAILS Budget: 2,173,404 € Subsidies: 1,552,993 € Project duration: August 2012 – July 2015

PROJECT PARTNERS - RFIDea-Zetes (leader) - Baxter R&D Europe - Free University of Brussels – QALINCA - Free University of Brussels – OPERA - University of Liege – ACE

‘Temptrack’, an abbreviation of Temperature Tracking, is mainly targeted at the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector.

Baxter R&D Europe is contributing its expertise to the whole chain, from manufacturing to end use, while SCA Distribution has developed a mechanical system for tracing the temperature. This visual system, with a liquid that solidifies when there is a change in temperature, offers a fast mechanical and visual back-up solution.

Another important stage in this 36-month long project involves confirming that radio frequencies are not harmful to pharmaceutical and biotechnological products. “Under no circumstances can RF have any effect on the product,” clarifies David Dalla Vecchia. “It is a requirement of the regulatory authorities and so one of the conditions for access to the market”.
