NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LOCUMS IN SOUTH AFRICA

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

A

ccording to a press release by the Federation of African Professional Staffing Organisations (APSO) it’s no surprise that employers have added social media to applicant screening. Even Government, according to a recent advisory note issued by one of their departments, has climbed onto this particular bandwagon. Anyone, including recruitment agencies who use social media to screen applicants must stay within the law. CANDIDATE PRIVACY Information collected from any candidate’s social media profile (public or private) will be subject to the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPI). POPI is expected to be fully operational in the near future. To comply with POPI you should: • Inform the candidate that personal information is being collected from social media; • Get the candidate to give consent for the processing of such information; UNFAIR DISCRIMINATION What you need to avoid is the possibility that a disgruntled applicant that you declined, based on something in their social media profile, claims unfair discrimination under the Employment Equity Act. That

8

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

Act prohibits unfair discrimination on the grounds of race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, family responsibility, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, HIV status, conscience, belief, political opinion, culture, language, birth or any other arbitrary ground. So please exercise caution when relying on information gleaned from social media profiles. FOCUS ON INHERENT JOB REQUIREMENTS While you should be cautious, remember that fair discrimination is permitted. So you could reject a candidate for reasons that are related to the inherent requirements of the job – even if that information has been collected from social media. Social media checks can provide useful information and the trend is certainly towards including such checks in candidate screening. However, make sure you have the candidate’s consent and that, regardless of the reason/s for declining, your discrimination is based on inherent job requirements. Harassment in the workplace is not confined only to sexual harassment, but can take many other forms. Some examples, as described in the CCMA information sheet “Harassment” ( © CCMA) includes: • Bullying

• spreading malicious rumours, • or insulting someone, particularly on gender, race or disability grounds; • Ridiculing or degrading someone, • picking on them or setting them up to fail; exclusion or victimisation; • unfair treatment, for example, based on race, gender, sexual orientation, pregnancy, age, disability, religion, HIV status, etc; • overbearing supervision or other misuses of power or position; • unwelcome sexual advances; • making threats/comments about job security without foundation; • deliberately undermining a competent worker by overloading and constant criticism; • preventing individuals from progressing by intentionally blocking promotion or training opportunities. One such harassment which can also be seen as unethical and breach of contract with the staffing agencies is when locums are threatened that they will not be offered new assignments if they don’t work directly through the employment company in an attempt to bypass terms of the official staffing contract already in place. This would be blatant harassment. This is a violation of your rights as a locum to choose to be placed by the agency. Every worker has the right to be treated with dignity and respect in the workplace and workers do not have to tolerate harassment by these employer companies. Note that the CCMA states that employers have a duty to protect workers from harassment and employers should develop a code of conduct on harassment in

consultation with the employees and employee representatives. Harassment is in fact classed as an unfair discrimination and only results in a violation of human rights, poor morale among employees, causes unexplained absenteeism, late coming and poor concentration at work. It is the cause of loss of productivity and a major cause of worker resignation. When employees are unfairly discriminated against in this way, it is advisable that the employee should first confront the harasser directly, in the presence of a witness, and request the harasser to cease the harassment immediately. Employees also have available to them the normal grievance procedures, or they can turn to their union or employees association for assistance. Once the case has been reported, the employer is obliged to investigate the case and if necessary disciplinary action must be taken against the harasser. Any matters that cannot be resolved at employer level can be referred to the CCMA for conciliation and if a resolution is not reached by that process, then the matter will be referred to the Labour Court. Harassment, because it constitutes unfair discrimination, falls within the jurisdiction of the Employment Equity Act. Acknowledgement is made for the information contained in CCMA information sheet “Harassment” for the information contained in this article. CCMA information sheets can be downloaded from the CCMA web site at www.ccma.org.za

GLEN McQUIRK

LEADERSHIP: PREPARE FOR LEADERSHIP L - Legacy E - Explore A - Altitude D - Destination E - Engineer R - Revelation LEAD LEGACY LEAVERS A great leader is one who leads others to leave an even greater legacy. Freedom can be experienced by everyone in a position of leadership, but something greater rests on their shoulders; responsibility. Although a leader has the freedom to choose what he or she wants to do, a leader must firstly always do what is best for everyone in the team. In days gone by, the captain of a ship would be the last to disembark if the vessel he was sailing was in danger of sinking. The captain would always ensure the safety of all souls on board before abandoning his ship. In recent years, it is clear that this form of leadership is scarce. People want the freedom of leadership without the responsibility that it entails. True leadership is demonstrated when the leader is not so concerned about who receives the credit. Great leaders are more interested in the legacy their followers are equipped and inspired to leave, than they are about leaving their own legacy. What legacy would you like to see your followers leave? BE AN EXPLORER Be the first to leave a footprint. Being the first to walk on the beach after it has been washed clean by a high tide is an exhilarating

16

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

experience. It does something for your soul. When you look back over your shoulder, all you see is one set of footprints; yours. Somehow you feel something well up inside of you as you realize that no one else has ever set foot on that beach in its current state but you. You feel a connection with the essence of life. You feel like you were born for this and wish you could do it more often. Perhaps you have just had an insight into the secret of how life should be lived. Maybe true leadership is about leading where no one else has dared to lead before. It could be about having the courage to face your inner fears of the unknown and to venture out like a child into a territory filled with beaches without footprints. You know the answer. Why not be a footprint maker? Where are you planning to leave new footprints? SOAR TO GREAT ALTITUDES Get excited when you feel turbulence; it means you are moving to a higher altitude. The fasten seat belt sign is always switched on before takeoff. Turbulence is a necessary barrier that must be passed through in order to reach a high altitude where smooth flight can be experienced. Even here though, storms can cause some rough flying. An experienced leader knows that the pursuit of a worthy goal or destiny will always be interrupted by some turbulent air and will be prepared for it. In fact, he/she seeks to break through this barrier time and time again and uses it to gauge progress to a higher and higher level. A follower, on the other hand, sees a little shake up as something to be avoided at all cost and will very quickly descend to a mediocre level of accomplishment

in life. Tell your team to fasten their seat belts because you are about to move to a higher level. Switch the seat belt signs on. Power up the throttle. Take off. Most of the time turbulence is just a lot of hot air. What turbulence are you experiencing? Are you ascending or descending? SEE YOUR DESTINATION VISION: Visible Imagination Shared Inspires Moses daringly and yet effectively led the Israelites out of Egypt by clearly stating their destination, the promised land. Knowledge of the destination inspired over two million people to head out of slavery directly into a desert wilderness. The result of this step of faith was many miracles. Despite the overwhelming favour they experienced, they quickly lost sight of their destination and became consumed by the circumstances they found themselves in. They began to complain about the situation instead of focusing on their destination. The desert became their comfort zone, their home and their grave. Every one of them was fearful of the unknown; the false report of an invincible army of giants barricading their promised land kept them in hiding. Only two people saw the opportunity and not the obstacles, enabling them to prevent their situation becoming their destination. What situation have you allowed to become your destination? ENGINEER YOUR MIND Generally it requires a different mind-set to solve a problem than the one that created it. New perspective thinking is desperately needed in finding solutions to resolve issues that we ourselves create. Our minds are in need of an upgrade. It is important for us to learn new

things. We can do this by listening to audio material, reading books, attending motivational and inspirational talks, and participating -in seminars and workshops of a personal development nature. We are quick to look at the cost of these sources of input and consequently miss the incredible value that would be gained through the investment. What we put into our minds, no one can take away from us; we do not have an uninstall button. Everything we put in, good or bad, remains. Maybe its time we choose to put in more good. LOOK FOR THE REVELATION Revelation is the ultimate insight; its what lies beyond the obvious. It generates a deep commitment and resolve. Revelation usually comes after long sustained purposeful thought or meditation. It often presents itself at a time and place of its own choosing. It is instantly recognisable and immediately activates an emotional response that seeks to be expressed in some way. It may meet with aggressive opposition such as (almost audible) thoughts of doubt that seek to suppress and bury it in the deep recesses of your subconscious. A true leader easily and quickly recognises the value of these instantaneous inspired insights, using the energy generated by them to move forward faster and make a positive shift. The leader within you will develop a deaf ear to that small voice which so desperately wants you to turn a blind eye to these moments of inspiration. Never laugh them off as unattainable or unrealistic. People who do, sink back into their comfort zone of lack and despair. What revelation do you need to rescue from your inner graveyard?

PROPERTY ALTERATION INVESTMENT TIPS

F

inding the best combination of value-adding and lifestyle-enhancing upgrades to your home isn’t always easy, particularly on a budget. Before you start adding features to your property you must consider what potential buyers will think of it. Contact a local estate agent and get a before and after evaluation of your property. Do By: Aldo Cilliers not over capitalise/spend on your property.

The Garden

The garden, front lawn, your yard, it doesn’t matter what you call it, should look neat and tidy. This ads so much to the curb appeal of the property. Make sure the grass is short and green and the edges are trimmed. Do some landscaping. Put nice pots and good looking plants in your front garden where they will catch the eye. The first thing you see when you stop at a house is the garden and the driveway. This needs to get extra attention.

18

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

Garage door replacement

A good-looking garage door tops the list when it comes to returning cash to your pocket. This curb-appeal enhancer will get you back almost every cent you spent when selling your property.

Entry door replacement (steel)

You will recoup over 91 percent of your cost by replacing your entry door with a 20-guage steel door, complete with clear dual-pane half-glass panel, jambs and an aluminium threshold with composite stop. These doors come factoryfinished with the same colour on the front and

PROPERTY

Sliding door and windows replacement: Replacing old sliding doors and wooden window frames with new aluminium ones is always a good start that will certainly ensure a good return on investment. Buyers always look at doors and window frames when considering buying property. Looking at and through clean and neat windows always ticks all the right boxes. Buyers will notice immediately if doors and windows are in need of repairs.

Paint your walls

It goes without saying that if your house looks bad and contains cracks, mould, damaged boundary walls and so on, it will harm the potential value of your property. A weatherproof exterior wall coating with a 10-year warranty will add value to the property. Home buyers want to know that the house will still be standing after you left. When deciding on house colours, be sure to paint the house in a neutral colour so buyers can envision themselves living in the space.

Go green

back sides. An impressive wooden front door will also enhance the look of your home.

Deck addition (wood)

One advantage of owning a house is having a yard. Nothing enhances a yard like a wooden deck. This feature will hold more than 82 percent of its value come resale time. Minor kitchen remodelling: Before you embark on a major kitchen overhaul, consider a minor one, which will recoup about 81 percent of its cost. Cabinet boxes are left in place but updated with modernized shaker-style wood panels and drawer fronts. Replace laminate counter tops with granite or marble tops. Next, swap out older appliances with energy-efficient models. Update your sink and faucet, repaint the trim, e.g. ceiling and cornice.

Energy consumption is a growing concern in South Africa, so making your home more energy efficient will go a long way to adding value. Ensure that all light bulbs are LED. Install timers on any outside lights so they are only used when necessary. In an average household, the geyser counts for 40-60% of the monthly electricity bill. If a solar geyser isn’t an option, invest in a geyser blanket to clad the water cylinder and hot water pipes. Also install a timer to ensure the geyser is only switched on when needed. Water usage is also something we need to watch in South Africa. Ensure all taps are leak free and install water-efficient shower heads.

The law

You need to comply with the laws and requirements of the municipality in which your property is located.” “When in doubt, it is always best to confirm with your local municipality what their requirements are in terms of alterations and add-ons. A registered architect can always provide invaluable advice.

New Cars 2019 By: Ernst Lombard 2019 Alfa Stelvio Quadrifoglio The Alfa Romeo super SUV is coming to SA in 2019. Powered by a 2.9litre V6 Ferrari engine, this Alfa is not your average SUV. It produces 375KW and 600Nm of torque. The 100kph sprint takes less than 4 seconds from stand still. Top speed of 283kph is also very impressive for a SUV.

2019 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera The crazy 2019 Aston Martin DBS Superleggera will be powered by an even crazier 5.2lire twin turbo V12 engine. The 100kph sprint takes 3.4 seconds from standstill. Top speed is rated at a similarly bonkers 340kph. Expect prices north of R7 million. This Aston definitely makes for a fantastic bedroom wall poster.

2019 BMW M850i xDrive BMW South Africa have confirmed that the new BMW 8 series in the form of the M850i xDrive is coming to SA in 2019. The new BMW coupe will be powered by a 4.4litre twinturbo charged V8 engine producing 390Kw and 750Nm of torque. Price has been confirmed at R1,88 million.

Six new exciting and unaffordable cars of 2019

Motor journalists often get criticized for writing about cars that no one can afford. In 2019 we wanted to write about more affordable cars that our readers could save up for and actually buy one day. Unfortunately, writing about budget cars proved to be more tedious than expected. So we came up with this more… exciting article. Here are six new cars coming to SA in 2019, that none of us can afford. They do however make great bedroom wall posters.

2019 Ferrari 488 Pista The new Ferrari 488 Pista is said to weigh only 1260kg, 90kg lighter compared to the GTB. It is powered by Ferrari’s 3.9litre that produces 530Kw and 770Nm of torque. The 100kph sprint takes an insane 2.76 seconds from stand still. Top speed is 340kph. Expect a dream car price to match the appeal.

2019 Jaguar I-Pace Jaguar’s first all electric SUV is coming to SA. Jaguar has even invested in a charging network in SA, making it possible to publicly charge your EV. The I-Pace has a 294Kw motor with 700Nm of torque. All of the power should be available instantly thanks to the electric motor. Prices start at R1.687 million.

2019 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Lamborghini is bringing their fastest Aventador to SA. Powered by a naturally aspirated V12 engine making 566Kw and 720Nm of torque. It makes serious power without using a turbo charger, unlike most supercars. 0-100kph only takes 2.8 seconds. 0-200kph takes only 8.6 seconds. Top speed is 350kph. Expect prices north of R9 million LOCUM LIFESTYLE

he 10th of July 2019 marks Bentley’s 100th year .

1920 – 1929 The Bentleys of the 1920s are some of the most distinctive cars of the vintage era. W.O. Bentley became a fan of developing racing engines; “I wanted to make a fast car, a good car: the best in its class…” which resulted in the creation of the first 3-litre, 85 bhp Bentley engine, providing speeds of 80 mph. 1930 – 1939 The 1930s brought many challenges for the Bentley Marque. Despite Bentley’s racing records and new public acclaim, Bentley Motors was beset by financial difficulty and in 1931 Rolls-Royce stepped in to buy Bentley Motors. 1940 – 1949 The move to Crewe in 1946 after World War II provided access to a community of highly skilled engineers and mechanics. 1950 – 1959 In 1952 the Bentley R-Type Continental made its debut, a Mulliner-bodied coupe with a top speed of just less than 120 mph. This made it the fastest four-seater car in the world and very quickly earned a reputation as the ultimate in high-

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

speed luxury. By 1957 Bentley had launched the new highly anticipated four-door Bentley Continental Flying Spur and the Bentley S2 was announced in 1959. It used an all-new 6.2-litre aluminium V8 engine. 1960 – 1969 The 1960s brought continuous development to the Bentley Motors family. In 1965 the Bentley T series was launched and displayed for the first time at the Paris Motor Show. 1970 – 1979 The 1970s is a landmark decade in the history of Bentley Motors. The founder, motor enthusiast and creator of one of the world’s most desirable high performance grand tourers, W.O. Bentley, dies aged 82 in August 1971. 1980 – 1989 The 1980s sees the Bentley identity developed and the beginning of the Bentley range and model line we know today. Bentley’s Le Mans heritage is echoed in the name of the new T series, the Mulsanne, benefiting from a new rear suspension design. By 1982 a high‑performance ‘Turbo’ Mulsanne is launched, capable of 0 to 60 mph in seven seconds and by 1985 the Mulsanne is developed once again to become the Turbo R, the fastest road‑going Bentley of the age.

1990 – 1999 The acquisition of Bentley by the Volkswagen Group in 1998 added resource, new technologies and even greater impetus to the momentum of the Bentley renaissance. 2000 - 2009 By 2001, Bentley relived its heritage with a return to competition at Le Mans. In 2003, the Continental GT was launched – the first car of the modern Bentley era. Inspired by the R-Type. 2009 also marked a major milestone in Bentley’s history. The Bentley Mulsanne embraces the highest standard of modern technology. 2010 - 2019 In 2015, Bentley launched the Bentayga – the first luxury SUV and Bentley’s fourth model line. The fastest, most powerful, most luxurious and most exclusive SUV in the world. 2018 saw the launch of the all-new third generation Continental GT. Sharper, lighter, faster and more refined than before, the third generation Continental GT is the definitive Grand Tourer. Since 2003, Bentley has delivered almost 70,000 Continental GTs to customers, making it the most successful Bentley in history.

MOTORING

BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT Born in 1888, W.O. Bentley grew up as an engineer enthusiast. He despised the cars of the late 19th and early 20th century, considering them dangerous, unsophisticated and noisy, so it was no surprise to the people around him that he turned his attention to building cars that would satisfy his own extraordinarily high expectations as a driver, an engineer and as a gentleman.

KL ASERIE DRIFT SAFARI CAMPS

T

he Boutique Amani Safari Camp was acquired in 1990 and has been cultivated to house guests in ultimate, under stated bushveld style. The raw bush that surrounds the Camp gives it an authentic, isolated atmosphere, allowing visitors to escape the hustle and bustle of city life entirely. In 2012, the Camp was washed away in a flood, and has since been rebuilt to offer a true home away from home. Today, a dry riverbed separates the Camp from a frequently used watering hole, which lies adjacent to the

MARATABA SAFARI LODGE

M

arataba and the Marakele National Park are an inspiring example of how a private/public partnership can rejuvenate a previously stagnating reserve. And what a reserve this is. Located in the foothills of the Waterberg Mountains, this malaria-free park boasts dramatic landscapes encompassing vast plains, dense bushveld, winding rivers, deep gorges and majestic mountains – it is arguably the most stunningly scenic reserve in the country. However along with its undeniable beauty and dramatic landscapes, it is also a haven for an impressive variety of wildlife due to its location in the transitional zone between the dry western and more moist eastern regions of South Africa and thus sports a hugely diverse array of fauna and flora.

40

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

Marataba is a lodge truly in keeping with its spectacular surroundings. Seemingly inspired by ancient African ruins such as those found at Mapungubwe and Great Zimbabwe, the lodge boasts 15 exotic tented suites which are an intriguing mix of canvas, wood and packed stone walls - each exquisitely furnished and decorated with a modern twist. they really constitute supreme luxury of the highest order. These tents each have their own private deck overlooking the sweeping plains and meandering river below whilst the Waterberg Mountains tower majestically above. A lavish free-standing stone bath invites you to soak up the opulence of the room and there are both indoor and outdoor showers – where you can fully take in the dramatic scenery around

the lodge. At the end of another adventurous day, the hugely comfortable king size bed lures you to slip under the covers and fall asleep to the timeless night sounds of the bushveld. The lodge enjoys a private concession area covering some 23 000 hectares in the heart of the Marakele National Park. You have the opportunity to view all the large game species from elephant and rhino to the big cats, as well as an amazing variety of birds including the largest colony of endangered Cape vultures in the world (more than 800 breeding pairs have settled here) As far as flora is concerned, the park is home to rare finds of yellowwood and cedar trees amongst others. You will enjoy exploring this vast wilderness with an experienced ranger who has an intricate knowledge of the

bush, a passion for conservation and its wildlife. The rangers are seemingly a walking talking bush encyclopaedia able to take on a barrage of questions from the kids whilst dispensing entertaining chunks of safari trivia and a host of mind-boggling stats and fascinating facts to the older passengers. Guests can also go on bush walks where they capture the spirit of following in the footsteps of the brave explorers of bygone years along with a qualified guide, you’ll head out on designated routes through the park. Your guide will share their expertise on the medicinal uses of the local flora whilst you’ll get the opportunity to view animals at eye level and experience the rhythm and energy of the bush in a much more intimate setting. In the warm months of summer,

grab your swimsuit, hat and sunscreen and venture out with your guide to swim in the naturally formed rock pools at the base of the mountains - a sumptuous picnic and fully stocked bar will accompany you so you can either frolic and splash in the water or relax with drink in hand and take in the splendour of your surroundings. The lodge also aims to create a fun environment for children - they will get the chance to experience what it’s like to walk in the shoes of a game ranger, even just for a day. The rangers will take special care to spend time with the youngsters on the game drive or back at the lodge, teaching and guiding them through the wonders of nature and the African bush. Back at the lodge on your down time you can soak up the sun around the lodge’s swimming

pool, read a good book, enjoy a cold beer or glass of wine or share your adventures with family and friends - all in the comfort of the architecturally stunning main lodge area which includes a cozy lounge with a fireplace, as well as a refreshing swimming pool with pool loungers and hammocks placed in the trees/ Dining at Marataba is an inspiring and memorable experience – it may be lunch under the lantern tree watching the animals drink at the waterhole, dinner on the deck under the stars, a sundowner stop with yummy snacks on the plains, or a bush breakfast and bush picnics next to the river. This tented camp is truly one to remember and promises a once in a lifetime safari experience. Reservation / Enquiries Phone +27 11 880 9992 Email res@marataba.co.za

ungwe Safari Camp has been operating on the same site for over 24 years offering simple yet memorable safaris of real value to our guests. At Pungwe our ethos is to deliver a truly authentic safari experience with limited impact on the environment. We believe that the essence of any safari is best captured in the sights, sounds and smell of the bush and we endeavour to create an environment in which these elements take centre stage so that our guests have a life altering experience. Location Pungwe is situated in the remote and undeveloped southern portion of the Manyeleti Reserve, on the northern

border of the Sabi Sand Reserve and the eastern border of the Kruger National Park. We are fortunate to have unfenced boundaries with both of these iconic reserves, allowing for free movement of animals between the three reserves. Manyeleti is renowned for its large concentrations of game and relatively low levels of development guaranteeing exceptional game viewing with minimal vehicle densities. authentic safari camp. The thatched roofs over each of the large tents ensures that the interiors remain cool in summer and mild in winter. The en-suite bathrooms with their free-standing hot showers, large baths, flushing toilets and intricately designed basins provide all the creaturecomforts one expects. Each of the tents offers either twin or king-size options under four-poster style mosquito nets, providing protection and an ambiance reminiscent of a by-gone era, further enhanced by the soft glow of lanterns. Our food is wholesome and often cooked over an open fire using locally sourced fresh produce. We do cater for vegetarians and although remote and off the grid, the luxury of ice is always available.

Our Green Footprint Our small size and off-the-grid status ensures that Pungwe Safari Camp has an extremely light ecological footprint. All lighting is provided by lanterns, cooking is done either on an open fire or on gas appliances and refrigeration is courtesy of solar power. `The fact that we encourage our guests to walk further reduces our impact on the environment. VARIETY COULD BE THE KEY TO HEALTHY LIVING W e live to stimulate our senses. To smell, touch, hear, see, feel and of course taste. This can complicate matters when it comes to following a healthy diet. One finds oneself daily in the conflict zone with an inner dialogue “to taste, or not to taste?” And as with Murphys law, once you have started with a healthy eating plan; 2 days later you might find

52

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

yourself walking into your best friend’s kitchen to be pleasantly welcomed by the smell of freshly baked baked bread. As if this is not enough, your friend is smiling at you from the other side of the kitchen with a thick slice of warm bread dripping with melted butter. Before you know it, the two of you are sitting at the table gobbling up the rest of the bread with a cup of coffee

- your healthy eating plan now a distant memory of the past. Nevertheless, the sensation of stimulating your taste buds confirms that everything about this moment is indeed, delicious. It was after many of these experiences that I gave up on healthy eating plans that I was only able to follow strictly for a week or two (if I locked myself up in my bedroom with no temptations in

sight). I mean, why deprive oneself of these delicious moments? Imagine living life without enjoying a taste of exquisite food and the warm, comforting, feeling it leaves in your “belly” afterwards? Balance is key and I believe that if we can incorporate healthy eating habits at least 70 - 80% of the month, we would live much healthier lives and it creates ample opportunity for those delicious cheat meals. Moderation is important, as always. I have found that an eating plant that focusses on variety and stimulates different taste buds offer more results. I have managed to lose over 10kg of unhealthy fat in the past 4 months and safely increased my daily fitness level to 6000 steps. My blood pressure has stabilised without needing to take any more medication. Besides living a healthier lifestyle, it does not feel like I am on diet, as I am constantly stimulating my taste buds with different foods types. This monthly guideline is easy to follow, and it includes a variety of healthy foods & cheat meals. Yes, you need to put in some work and be strict, especially during the detox & alkaline weeks but it is totally doable, and the heightened energy and positivity makes up for the loss of eating comfort foods during this period. There are a few rules to keep in mind: 1. Start Week 1 at least 5 days before the next full moon phase

2. Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily 3. Cheat meal means a meal and not a cheat day 4. Be creative with your meals 5. Exercise regularly WEEK 1 FOCUS: detox week CHEAT MEALS: 1 cheat meal only on the 7th day (anything you like) AVOID: fried foods, meat products, dairy, wheat, sugar and alcohol EAT DAILY: quinoa, raw carrots, raw cabbage, raw beetroot, pineapple, pawpaw, grapefruit, raw garlic, black walnuts, oregano, cloves, It is recommended to start the detox plan during the week of full moon as most parasite eggs in the body tend to hatch during this time and the food above assists with ridding your body of toxins and parasites. During this week, drink plenty of water and freshly squeezed grapefruit and apple juice. Avoid eating any meat, sugar, dairy and wheat prodcts during the week. Instead opt for options such as oven baked vegetables drizzled with olive oil, mixed with quinoa or a vegetable stir-fry in coconut oil. Have a fruit salad for breakfast. In between meals, make sure to eat the above ingredients in a raw salad (at least 2/ day) mixed with olive oil, raw garlic, lemon juice, glove & oregano dressing. Eat clean. Cut down on coffee (1 black, no sugar / a day) instead replace it with

herbal teas. WEEK 2 FOCUS: destroy harmful pathogens and prevent cancerous cells – maintain your body’s pH level as close as possible to 7.4 CHEAT MEALS: 1 cheat meal only on the 7th day (anything you like) AVOID: all high acidic foods, coffee and alcohol EAT DAILY: high alkaline foods Get yourself a reputable alkaline chart and plan your daily meals according to the alkaline food group. Medically it has been proven that harmful pathogens, diseases and even cancerous cells cannot grow in an alkaline body with a pH reading close to 7.4. Your energy levels will also increase, and any mental fog should clear as well. Buy pH strips from your local pharmacy and test your pH level first thing in the mornings to monitor your body. Avoid coffee & alcohol (replace it with herbal teas) this week and increase your water intake. WEEK 3 FOCUS: protein – meat, meat and more meat! CHEAT MEALS: 1 cheat meal on Saturday (anything you like) AVOID: carbs, vegetables (besides greens) and fruits EAT DAILY: protein & full cream dairy, green vegetables only This week you will stock up on protein for breakfast, LOCUM LIFESTYLE

lunch and dinner and even to snack on in between meals. Start your day with fried eggs in butter, followed by grilled chicken & cheese for lunch and perhaps a steak for dinner with melted garlic butter, combined with broccoli, peas or green leafy vegetables. Snack on biltong or chilli bites in between meals. Do not eat fruits this week or any other vegetables except green ones. Also drink a lot of water and enjoy your coffee or a glass of alcohol occasionally. Choose full cream dairy options. WEEK 4 FOCUS: stimulate your taste buds with healthy carb meals CHEAT MEALS: 2 cheat meals

54

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

Wed & Sat (anything you like) AVOID: protein and dairy EAT DAILY: healthy carb meals, fruits, vegetables, legumes, tofu, vegetarian protein This week consists of eating organic oats with honey for breakfast or muesli (All Bran flakes too) with almond milk. Snack on a fruit mid-morning and enjoy a carb loaded lunch; whole wheat pasta and pesto or a rye sandwich with cucumber, lettuce and tomato. Basmati or brown rice, legumes such as beans, chickpeas, tofu or falafel are all on the menu for this week. Try out some vegetarian protein options for dinner, they are very tasty as well - Fry burgers or Quorn sausages. Be creative but

stick to the guidelines and remember, NO MEAT. Carbs are comfort food and you will find that this week will create a feeling of satisfaction and excite the taste buds before entering the detox week again. Also drink a lot of water and enjoy your coffee with almond milk or a glass of alcohol occasionally. Have regular blood pressure tests and consult your physician before changing your diet or going off chronic medication Written by: Lemanja Mears
