NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LOCUMS IN SOUTH AFRICA

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT M aking career choices is not always easy. Getting older and having more responsibilities in life invariably force us to apply extra careful consideration in taking that next step. I have always been a proponent of good market research when making important decisions and to me career decisions, permanent employment or working freelance fall into that category. Working as a locum pharmacist is rewarding, but don’t expect everything to be clear sailing. Sometimes you are faced with downright stormy weather out there. It is important to be aware of the positives as well as the negatives of a locum lifestyle. Here is a list drawn up by Kathryn Scorer that I found very helpful when trying to give clear a picture to prospective locums on what they should expect.

THE POSITIVES • Higher rates of pay compared to permanent employment. • It’s a great way to honing your skills and developing more experience at different work places to build your CV. • Locum work gives you more flexibility with work and home life helping to achieve the perfect work/life balance. • Locum work can provide you with temporary work until you find permanent work. • Locum work can be done in conjunction with a permanent job to supplement your income. • Where you choose to work is entirely up to you.

8

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

Andro Engelbrecht

• You only need to give a short notice period when resigning. • Ideal for people who like to work/travel in different locations across the country. • You are pretty much self-employed. • You can claim expenses against your tax. THE NEGATIVES • You may have to work during less desirable periods i.e. evenings, weekends, holidays or even Easter and Christmas periods. • You don’t accrue entitlements such as sick leave, annual leave or long service leave and may not have access to maternity and pension benefits. • Locum work is never guaranteed. It can be unstable and unpredictable. • There may be payment delays. • You may find it difficult to gain support from management and feel like you are treated less importantly than permanent staff. • You may have to attend training sessions in your own time. TIPS ON HOW TO BE A BETTER LOCUM 1. Be proactive, its great using locum agencies to find work assignments, but it’s just as important looking out for positions on your own. 2. Subscribe to job posts of locum agencies on social media, Whatsapp groups and job boards. 3. Download and install mobile applications e.g. Facebook, locum agency, to aid in job updates as described above.

4. Do your own research about the locum employer and the relevant professional responsibilities. Educate yourself on what is expected from you with regards too compliance at these work places as well as training and assessment modules. Keep a log of this. 5. Have a strong relationship with your locum agency. It is important to keep in touch with your recruitment consultant so they have a better understanding of what you’re looking for in a position, your availability or report back about any problems you might be experiencing. Also inform the locum agency if you’re interested in working at other locations or perhaps you’re looking for a permanent position. Such communication will keep you fresh in the minds of the staffing consultants of your locum agency. 6. Communication: It is so important to communicate with your employer regularly. Touch base with them once a week and if you have a rolling contract find out how long you will be needed at that work place. Circumstances may change in a matter of days and you do not want to be left short of work. If you have some idea as to how long you will be needed then you can communicate this to your locum agency and be on the hunt to find other work. 7. Be organized. If your plan is to never be out of work you must be organised. A diary is a must. At least this way you can visually see where you have work and can plan for future work with your agency or employer. Inform your locum agency of your availability and communicate changes regularly to them. NALSA’s MISSION The purpose of the National Association of Locums in South Africa (NALSA®) is to provide a foundation of industry standards and ethical guidelines for companies specialising in locum and term contract staffing services. These principles are the

8. Keep receipts. As you are a self-employed contractor you can claim travel and meal expenses and any other expenses that may be constituted necessary to do your locum work. This reduces the tax you pay and increases your take home pay. It is therefore important to keep these receipts in the event of an audit. 9. As a locum pharmacist, you don’t have the employment rights of leave, such as sick leave or holiday etc. My advice is to plan ahead; especially for unexpected events, such as illness or accidents. 10. Choose your locum pharmacist agency carefully. There are some shady agencies who are not registered with APSO (The Federation of African Professional Staffing) or not have a blanket professional indemnity insurance. Be suspicious if they’re not registered with the Department Of Labour as a Private Employment Agency. 11. Choose an efficient locum agency. There is nothing worse than not being paid for the work you have done or waiting weeks on end for payment. Look for a locum agency that will process your payment in a timely manner and will resolve any issues straight away. 12. Also, make sure your timesheets are signed by the correct authorised person and sent to your locum agency’s payroll office. Submit the timesheet soonest after completing your assignment and no later than the end of a calendar week as locum payments are calculated on a weekly basis. This will minimise possible delayed payments.

PROPERTY ADVICE Who are the Community Scheme Ombud Services?

C

ommunity Scheme Ombud Services (CSOS) was implemented in South Africa 2009/2010. The National Department of Human Settlements developed a detailed business case document which paved the way for the development of the CSOS Bill, which became an act on the 11th of June 2011, and it came into operation on 7 October 2016. They aim to facilitate and maintain a dispute resolution service to promote good governance of community schemes. Both body corporates (apartment blocks) and homeowner associations (free standing houses within a complex) need to register with CSOS. There is a monthly levy which is now applicable when registered

12

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

with CSOS, and they rake in to the tune of about R 85 million each month.

What are they all about? Sectional Title Schemes now have compulsory reserve funds that they need to pay the appropriate savings over to, in an attempt to avoid special levies for owners in the future. They also now need a 10 year Maintenance Action Plan (MAP), which members need to approve annually at their meetings. These are not applicable to Homeowners Associations, CSOS is merely a platform to lodge disputes for those types of properties.

PROPERTY

By: Terence von Molendorff (CEO Red Pepper Properties)

How will it affect my property?

How does lodging a claim work? You download the dispute form from the CSOS website, complete it in and submit it to CSOS. They charge an admin fee, the latest fee was R50-00 and an additional R100-00 if it goes to adjudication. Conciliation refers to the process where the parties use the services of an independent conciliator to be appointed by the Ombud, to assist parties to arrive at a mutually agreeable solution. If a remedy is not reached, the matter then goes into adjudication where an independent adjudicator appointed by the Ombud determines how the dispute is to be resolved and makes a binding decision.

Besides the fact that the levies would have to increase in order to pay CSOS every month, if your scheme falls into a category where you need to make provision for a compulsory reserve fund, your levies would increase even further. Management fees would also increase in order to justify all the extra admin and work that is associated with being registered with CSOS. This after the tremendous municipal account increases and VAT increases‌ All of a sudden that investment property you have been eyeing does not look so attractive now with the additional massive increase in the levies recently.

How disputes have been handled in the past. We have experienced some outrageous decisions previously, however it is the law and we need to make sure all our associated property schemes are registered with them. Their jurisdiction is not yet clear, as on their application forms it stipulates any owner, occupier, management agent, board of directors and trustees can lodge a dispute, but we LOCUM LIFESTYLE

13

PROPERTY

have seen old management agents (who pay no CSOS fees) lodge disputes with CSOS, which have been entertained.

Benefits of being registered with CSOS

CSOS does have some benefits. If the complaint is truly valid and the person who lodged the complaint has really exhausted all options and has come to a dead end whether it be by not getting joy from their managing agent or even their neighbour if the issue was with them, CSOS can be a viable avenue to pursue. For example, if

14

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

you live in a free standing house and your neighbour has a tree encroaching on your boundary wall causing it damage, and they refuse to remedy it, CSOS could be an option to explore.

Conclusion

The long and the short of it is that CSOS is definitely affecting all associated properties, whether it be for the good or bad. They are a public entity, an entity of the Department of Human Settlements and now form part of the laws of our country.

THE MISSING LINK TO REALISING YOUR DREAM

I

f you knew just this one thing, your dreams would come true.

No longer would you be a bystander, watching other people’s ideas being realised, but you would be seeing yours come to fruition. Who mandated you to work for someone else’s dream and lie awake at night dreaming of yours? One thing is clear; we all possess a certain ability that is essential for the conception of a dream. Every child seems to have it in spades. As a result, we conceive dreams all the time. We come up with amazing ideas. Dreaming the impossible dream seems so natural. Zig Ziglar referred to it as the greatest nation on the planet. Yes. It’s our imagination. Our ability to see the invisible, to dream of a better future that does not yet exist, seems to be our creators’ gift to every one of us. So why does it seem so futile? Is its sole purpose to torment us? ITS HOW EVERYTHING BEGINS People all over the world will tell you that everything that exists began first as an idea that was sparked by a need. What they are saying is that everything was first imagined. This is something that few will dispute. If something did not exist at some point in the past, then we can conclude that it may have been viewed impossible until someone imagined it to be possible. This suggests that imagination itself is our ability to see the impossible. If what we dream is not beyond what already exists, we

20

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

are not utilising our imagination effectively. We can also conclude that the future is in fact already present in the minds of the imaginers. Interestingly, the present is actually the reflection of someone’s past imagined future. What many people perceive to be cutting edge is actually old news. The reality is that if something is imagined, it has been conceived, and if it has been conceived, then it’s just a matter of time before it is birthed. So why do so few dreams see the light of day? Why are so many stillborn? JUST ONE STEP When we analyse the process of turning a dream into reality, we can simplify it to just one step. I hear your objection. If it was only one step, why do so few people’s dreams become a reality? That’s exactly what I thought for many years. I would hear people say (and I would read about it in books) that it was only the first step that was difficult. Well, at least, that seemed to be the conclusion. After all, if few people were succeeding, then logically the first step must be difficult. But what if they came to the wrong conclusion? What if it wasn’t difficult? What if it was really easy? THIS IS IT If we look at the things that exist, the one step

that most people are missing, is staring them right in the face. When I tell you what it is, you are going to find it unbelievably true.

first step. In fact, they have instead suggested that we need something more than what we were born with. Therein lies our prison.

Take a look at all things manmade and you will see it. The clothes you wear, the phone you use, the car you drive, the house you live in, all clearly show the answer. Have you seen it?

THE MAGIC INGREDIENT

Yes, they were all conceived in someone’s mind, but there is something visibly obvious. Everything that exists was first written down, a documented plan that described that which was already conceived in the minds eye. The first step is clearly and obviously the Master Action Plan or MAP. It’s what precedes the manifestation of all created things. Yes, it is really that simple. THINK ABOUT IT How many people do you know who have told you about their dream? Something that they do not yet possess, but wish they had? Almost everyone right? So everyone has the ability to dream or imagine. Unfortunately most people abuse this ability, and when they do, it is spelt W-O-R-R-Y. Now think about step one, how many of these same people have ever shown you their written plan or MAP? Not many, perhaps none. See the problem? So there is a different conclusion that we could draw. Instead of assuming that the first step is difficult, we could assume that people simply haven’t taken it or they are not aware that they need to take it. No one actually has taught us this about simple

You see most people I have spoken to think they first need some magic ingredient. They think that they have been short changed. Perhaps others are just lucky or more intelligent. Maybe they are favoured or they were dealt a lucky hand. Possibly its not what you know but who you know. What about the money, the people, the resources? Everyone knows that is why dreams don’t come true. This is probably the easiest and most common excuse people use. They seem to think that if a dream is worthwhile it must cost you something. Blame is a wonderful game. It is used by of every person whose dream seems illusive. They blame the economy, their parents, their circumstance, there must be a reason other than me. I remember reading somewhere that if you want something that you have never had; then do something you have never done. From this, one could easily deduce that people who do not achieve their dreams have no plan, then by having a plan you could experience something different, not so? The magic ingredient is not magical at all. It’s simply doing what others are not prepared to do. A GREAT QUOTE “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” You and I have heard this said many times. We may have even quoted it ourselves without

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

21

MOTIVATION

paying any attention to its true meaning though. Essentially it implies that there is no such thing as NO PLAN. The hidden message in this quote is that if you fail to plan, there already exists a default plan, one that ensures failure. Failure could be summarised in these two words, unfulfilled dreams. Those who do not take the time or who do not put in the effort it required, to clearly articulate their dream in the form a written plan, are the ones that will spend the rest of their lives working according to the plans of others. Their personal dreams being shelved permanently. The saddest two words that anyone could utter are “IF ONLY” No one should ever have to utter them, especially not you. THE WEALTHIEST PLACE Dr Myles Munroe spoke about it often. He used to say that the wealthiest place on the planet was not the gold or diamond mines, but rather the graveyards of this world. Places lying full of unfulfilled potential, people who never realised their dreams. It is in the graveyard that we find inventions that never improved life, cures for diseases that never healed anyone, friendships that were never born, ideas that lay dormant. Are you going to add to the wealth of the graveyard? THE SECRET Definitely not. I agree with you. Your time has

22

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

come. This is a new day. It is time for your dream to move from conception to birth. Now is the time to prepare your plan. Now is the time to take the first step and MAP YOUR LIFE. When you do, people everywhere will be impacted by what you create. You will begin a living legacy. Others will start to see the future you have imagined. When you MAP YOUR LIFE, when you write your dreams down clearly and in such a way that they inspire, they will certainly come to pass. The secret to life is to rob the grave. Die empty.

New Cars 2018 New car models available in South Africa

2018 Mercedes A-Class More sophisticated then a S-class? Not possible you say. The A-class actually has higher resolution displays, more intelligent voice commands and more advanced self-driving features. The new A-class also feature augmented reality navigation and RGB lights to appeal to a younger market. Daimler crammed the most amount of technology they thought possible, while still allowing the car to move on 4 wheels. The new Aclass is expected to launch in August.

2018 Jaguar E-Pace The new Jaguar E-Pace just launched in SA. The smaller brother to the F-Pace is said to be sportier to drive and more affordable. Standard specification seems to be very generous with much more equipment included in the base price when compared to rivals. Prices start from R605 100 for the 110Kw Turbodiesel base model that also claims a fuel consumption of 5.6l/100km.

2018 BMW i8 roadster The BMW i8 might have debuted all the way back in 2014. BMW, however only recently decided to make a roadster version of their futuristic sportscar. The 275Kw of power comes from the same 1.5l turbo and electric motor setup as before. The new BMW i8 roadster should launch at the end of May 2018 in SA. One will set you back R2 329 300, which is R234 100 more than the coupe.

24

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

2018 Suzuki Swift The all new Suzuki Swift is 104kg lighter than the outgoing model, weighing a total of only 890kg. Fuel consumption is said to be improved significantly. A Sport model will also be available with dual exhaust and a sporty cabin. Hopefully it will also be as fun to drive as the outgoing model. The new Suzuki Swift should be available in SA by June 2018.

2018 Hyundai i30 N Hyundai is seeking to rubbish the notion that their cars are boring to drive with especially with VW Golf GTI as competitors. The Hyundai i30 N comes with 184Kw, but if you spec the performance package that figure gets bumped to 202Kw. It also comes with a e-differential and you can even change the sound the dual exhaust pipes make. Local launch date is not yet known.

2018 Nissan Micra The new Nissan Micra is longer, wider and lower then the outgoing model. The car can even be customized to suit your unique taste. The styling is a big upgrade compared to the predecessor and should appeal to younger buyers. A 0.9-litre turbopetrol and a 1.5-litre turbodiesel will be available, both making 75Kw. The new Nissan Micras should be available by June 2018 in SA.

JAGUAR F-PACE 20d AWD R-Sport Test Drive

By: Ernst Lombard

26

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

MOTORING

I

f you are in the market for a luxury car and a Jaguar is not on the shortlist then you should make your shortlist longer. Our test car was stock standard with no extras. Base price for the Jaguar F-pace 20d AWD R-Sport is R878 704 as of May 2018. Just getting into the F-Pace I was already impressed with what I saw. The high-quality leather seats and leather on the dash may be standard, but a very nice standard indeed. Reverse camera, front and rear sensors are also standard. The 20D AWD R-Sport comes with 2.0 turbodiesel with 132kw and 430nm. More on this surprisingly punchy engine later. There is also a 280KW supercharged V6 that will set you back R1 208 559 for those looking for a bit more power.

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

27

MOTORING INTERIOR The leather seats and interior trim leaves a very good impression. The dash feels premium and expensive. Since our test unit was stock, the touchscreen unit did not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The functionality of the touchscreen unit was definitely hampered without these technologies. We recommend that you tick them on the options list. We were glad to see Jaguar still uses physical buttons to operate the volume and Bluetooth controls. Physical buttons are much easier and safer to use on the road compared to touch buttons. ENGINE When we saw that the 4-cylinder turbodiesel only kicks out 132KW in a car that

SPECS OF OUR TEST UNIT : Engine Power Torque Transmission Fuel consumption 0-100kph Top Speed Fuel range (average)

28

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

weighs 1775kg, I thought it might be a tad slow, but was pleasantly surprised. The engine feels strong and torquey and is supposed to return 5.3l/100km. All 430nm of torque is available from only 1750 rpm. This all sounds very impressive but don’t expect to overtake super cars on the N1. While driving in the streets of Cape Town, we were impressed with pull away speed at the traffic lights. Jaguar has somehow worked their magic to make this diesel sound, well, not like a diesel at all. The Jag feels more nippy and faster than what the spec sheet would suggest. The overtaking capability while travelling at highway speed might be the only short coming of this brilliant motor.

4 cylinder turbodiesel 132kw @ 4000rpm 430nm @1750-2500rpm 8-speed automatic 5.3l per 100km 8.7 seconds 208 kph 1 132km

MOTORING SUSPENSION + DRIVING Let’s get to the biggest surprise during our test. We took the F-PACE past the aerial cable way and up the Table Mountain pass. This is where we found out that this Jag does not feel like a 1,8 ton car. I’ll go as far to say it doesn’t even feel like a SUV at all, but more like a sports car. I was very impressed with the way it handled around corners. Make no mistake; this is a big car. The newly launched e-pace does provide better standard equipment at a lower price, but one can argue that it cannot match the presence on the road of the F-pace.

FUEL ECONOMY

The elevation change on our test route will take its toll on any vehicles fuel efficiency. Going up and down Table Mountain is not exactly the best way to get the most from your fuel tank. We did however average 7.2l per 100km, which is very impressive for such a heavy vehicle.

CONCLUSION Some may argue that a motor vehicle is simply something to take you from point A to point B. Others will say that luxury motoring is a lifestyle. You will not be disappointed in the lifestyle that this Jaguar F-Pace provides. Take one for a test drive and decide for yourself. A special thank you to Johan Oosthuizen and CMH Jaguar Land Rover Cape Town for giving us the opportunity to test drive the new Jaguar F-Pace. STRETCHING EXERCISES TO COUNTER THOSE LONG WORKING HOURS By: Jolandi Vermeulen

B

eing on our feet all day can lead to pain in your legs, swollen feat, tight calves and lower back pain. Muscles can become stiff and painful as you stand and work all day. One of the main ways to prevent theses pains is to ensure that you’re wearing comfortable shoes. I have put together six stretching exercises that are effective at relieving pain and stretching tight muscles.

Enhanced physical fitness. Increased mental and physical relaxation. Reduced risk of injury to joint, muscles, and tendons. Reduced muscular soreness. Reduced muscular tension. Safety guidelines for stretching to avoid injury while stretching and will also help minimize muscle soreness after your stretching: Don’t bounce when stretching. This opens you up to muscle tearing and injury. Bouncing as you stretch can cause small tears,

32

called micro tears, in the muscles, which will leave scar tissue as the muscle heals. This scar tissue will tighten the muscles even further, making you less flexible. Don’t overstretch. Your body will tell you its limits...listen to your body. A stretch should be tight, but not painful. If you overstretch you might create an automatic myotatic reflex that will actually cause the muscle to recoil and tighten in an attempt to protect itself from injury. You know you have gone too far if you feel pain as you stretch.

1. Sitting on the Heel Stretch Many people suffer from lower back pain, which could be prevented by regular stretching to prevent build up of tension in the muscles. Repeat this stretch three to five times to release the tension build up in the back.

Movement: Kneel on the floor, the buttocks must be resting on the heels with the legs together. Lean forward with the torso until the arms are flush with the floor in front of the body. Hold for ten to twenty seconds then gently return to starting position. Do not stretch to a point of pain.

2. Lying One Leg Cross Over Stretch This stretch is a great way to stretch the lower back and buttocks to assess the difference in flexibility with either sides of the body. Movement: Lie on the floor with both legs stretched out in front of the body. Flex one

knee up to the chest using the opposite hand and pull the knee horizontally across, allowing the opposite side of the body to twist slightly. Hold the position for ten seconds before repeating on the opposite side. Do not stretch to the point of pain. LOCUM LIFESTYLE

3. Adductor Stretch Any type of training that demands stabilisation of the leg of changing direction quickly leaves the adductor muscles fatigued and stiff. This stretch is an effective flexibility exercise to stretch the adductor muscles of the leg. Repeat three to five times.

Movement : From standing position, bend the one leg, taking the body weight over the one side until the stretch is felt in the adductor muscles. Hold the position for ten seconds before switching to the other side.

4. Kneeling Hip Flexor and Quadriceps Stretch This is an excellent stretch to ease the tightness of the quadriceps and hip flexors. Repeat three to five times.

Movement : Kneeling on one knee, place the hands on either sides of the body for stabilisation and balance. Lean forward on the leg that is supporting you and feel the stretch in the quadriceps and hip flexors. Do not stretch to apoint of pain.

5. Standing Calf Stretch It is possible to stretch the calf muscle while standing. These stretches are an easy and effective way to stretch the calf before, during or after a workout routine or after a day’s work while standing on your feet. Repeat three to five times each leg.

Movement : Standing upright, slowly bend the back leg and push the knee forward you feel the stretch in the calf muscles. Hold for ten seconds before repeating the other side.

6. Lying prone on back pull leg up to chest This stretch is a great way to help relax the muscles surrounding the spine and stretch lower back muscles. Repeat three to five times.

Movement: Lie on the floor on the back and hold the one knee and the other (or both at once), close to the chest so the body is in a fetal position. Keep the abdominal muscles contracted and then release.

Nestled in this hidden gem is Breedezicht Estate, offering a quality development to weekend guests or even homeowners, looking for a lifestyle investment.

300 kilometres from Cape Town CBD, Witsand was once a bustling little town with a port where steamboats loaded goods destined for the Cape Town market. Today, Witsand boasts a variety of offerings, from its famous landmark of the Barry Memorial Church, built in 1849, to ruptured remains of steamships and the well-preserved little harbour. Home to the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra and Cape Vulture, Witsand presents a rich diversity of fauna and flora. With over 260 bird species, the largest concentration of the endangered southern right whale and 3,000 hectares of undisturbed fynbos right on its doorstep, this old fishing village is an investor’s aspiration. The Breede River is widely known as a fisherman’s retreat, supporting an abundance of fish from spotted grunter, steenbras, white and red stumpnose, leervis, and red roman to cob that weighs up to an impressive 50kg. Looking for something with a bit more adrenalin? Kitesurfing in Witsand is rated as one of the top kite surfing destinations in South Africa due to the perfectly flat lagoon, spaciousness and, of course, the onshore South Easter in the summer and the

Taita Falcon Lodge

A BIT OF HISTORY ne late-summer’s morning way back in 1994, Faan Fourie took a long walk through the untamed and rough African bush east of the well-known Victoria Falls. He came upon a site so breathtakingly beautiful, that he felt it would be a mistake not to share it with others. The view before him was the grandeur of the Batoka gorge in its entire splendour 230m deep, embracing the swirling waters of the Zambezi River in its depths. So it was that in 1995, Faan and his wife Anmarie took on the challenging task of building Taita Falcon Lodge where no road existed and with no hardware store around the corner to go to for building material. Undeterred and using indigenous materials from the surrounding bush, they meticulously set about making their dream a reality and the lodge slowly took shape. A self-taught carpenter from a nearby rural village was appointed to make the necessary furniture. This he did all by hand, from the chopping of a suitable tree, sawing the logs with a pit saw and producing the finished product with the very basic of tools.

O

Phne: Office:+260 (213) 321 850 (office hours only) Phone Lodge: +260 (213) 327046 (not for bookings) E-mail: taita-falcon@microlink.zm P.O.Box: 60012, Livingstone, Zambia Directions: The lodge is approximately 45 minutes drive from Livingstone and is well signposted from the main Livingstone / Victoria Falls road. The turnoff to the Lodge is 9km from Livingstone and about 1 km before the Victoria Falls border. From the turnoff the road is well signposted – over the railway line and right again at the big Baobab Tree (Lookout Tree). Access by road requires a high clearance vehicle as the last 11km of the road is a dirt road and is a slow drive through the bush. Accessing the area is straightforward. You can fly directly into Livingstone Airport from Johannesburg, Lusaka, and other regional centres. Alternatively, scheduled and charter airlines fly into Victoria Falls Airport (over the border in Zimbabwe) so note that additional transfer charges apply and you’ll need Zimbabwean visas for most nationalities.

AVANT-GARDE WINTER FASHION A

n up and coming trend in the fashion world is referred to as “Avant-garde fashion”. It has taken Paris by storm and has managed to also emerge into the trends here in South Africa. Perhaps you might think that it is a bit “uhm” controversial for some of us, who tend to lean towards more classical styles. Not Avant-Garde. It is a flexible style that can be toned according to your own subtleness. The dressing code is all about self expression. Let your clothes speak the language of your uniqueness. Do not follow the main stream this winter, instead make a statement saying: “This is me, I lead, I do not follow” with this new trend.

56

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

FASHION Besides the fact that you are freely invited to explore with self expression when choosing Avant-Garde as your style, it can also be a more economical approach to fashion than having to change your complete wardrobe this winter. Let’s face it, fashion is changing constantly every season at such a fast-pace, one needs to be quicker than “The Flash” to keep up with the trends. Avant-Garde leaves ample room for mixing and matching of various styles and playing with garments from different fashion era’s. So yes, this is a great trend to blend those winter items you bought last year with clothes that have been lying in your spare closet from the 1800’s. Dress it up in your own unique fashion and colours to reflect you and spice it up with some “soul” accessories. Don’t think that you can pitch up at work wearing knee height boots, a fur coat with a cowboy hat and a lace skirt now, can you? Absolutely not. It is one thing to express your uniqueness on a weekend, when your time is your own and yet another to adhere to the acceptable notions and code of conduct of your work place. But - there is always that word “but” - that allows us to leave a hint of self expression even at work, without stepping over the “tolerable line”. HOW TO WEAR AVANT-GARDE AT THE WORK PLACE: “Work hard, play hard” is a great principle adopted by many South Africans, especially in a locum profession. This fast-paced career can leave one looking rather dull towards the end of the week, with endless daily tasks and long work hours. I can see many pluses that Avant-Garde offers you as a locum. Think about it, if someone says “wow you are looking tired” (which by the way is only a polite way of saying you look terrible) you can now smile and say “well thank you, it is part of my unique Avant-Garde style and I am expressing my true feelings”. AvantGarde will leave you feeling like “the eye of the tiger” no matter what people say. Remember confidence is power. Make sure to blend your own uniqueness into your “dull” work wear to brighten up your day. HERE ARE A FEW SUBTLE DIFFERENCES YOU CAN MAKE: • A fun coat, something furry or feathery or even one that was knitted by your grandmother years ago • Thick funky knitted scarfs or choose ones

• • • • • • • • •

with prints of your favourite childhood cartoons or polka dots Wear funny socks with your suits Choose embroidered or beaded handbags Accessorize with feathery or colourful flower patterned items Express your uniqueness in the jewellery you wear; play with wood, feathers, steel or hand crafted jewellery that you love Wear stockings with colourful prints under a plain pinafore dress Pixy styled shoes Winter berets Tell a story through your look Pay attention to the details, maybe choose a specific hemline, thicker stitching or a thicker weave, colourful zips or buttons

CLOTHING PIECES THAT COMPLIMENTS AVANT-GARDE 1. LAYERING CARDIGANS Draping and styling in a number of ways is very important in the Avant-Garde fashion, choose cardigans with this in mind. 2. SHIRTS AND JACKETS Monochromatic shirts with asymmetric detailing combined with an Avant-Garde leather jacket. A simple and very effective way to transform your wardrobe and revolutionize your style is to start with one item that you can wear with any outfit, such as a denim jacket or a trench coat. When getting dressed, start planning your outfit by working your “outside in” with the first focus point on your trousers, jacket, followed by the cardigan, shirt and matched with your shoes and accessories to the detail. Give unity to your composition! THREE THINGS TO AVOID ON WEEKENDS: 1. Garments that you feel uncomfortable in 2. Any item that does not leave you feeling confident 3. Following trends (be courageous and original) What is Avant-Garde according to the main stream designers, including Barbara I Gongini? In short this cutting-edge fashion defines the aesthetics of our time. Based on a forwardthinking mentality, Avant-Garde fashion pushes new and unconventional designs and encourages risk-taking, experimental creativity and the rejection of the Avant-Gardism, by definition, rejects the notion of trends, conventions and anything that involves a lack of originality.

LOCUM LIFESTYLE

57

FASHION This is why fashion designers often avoid what is considered culturally popular and surprise with designs that are not only meant to last but also express who you are. Avant-garde (pronounced a’vantgarde) is an intellectual, artistic and cultural movement characterized by the experimental, the radical and the unorthodox approaches. Derived from french and meaning vanguard or advance guard, the term describes the few who dare to go in front and defy conventions. The current also defines an attitude of freedom from the conventions of society. This is why Avant-Garde is not the same as modernism. Modernism, as a term, defines a period that integrates all aspects of society while Avant-Garde rejects the mainstream in favour of the unique. Your body is a canvas, so create your composition artfully and make sure every element is part of the story: from your clothes to your jewellery, makeup and even your attitude. According to Ann Lee Couture Avant-Garde is: “creative fashion. Innovative, out of the box” IS AVANT-GARDE FOR ME? This trend is for you: • If you show an interest in style and have come to regard fashion as an intellectual effort. • You have developed an awareness of the environmental and social issues that surrounds us. • If you are looking for subtle ways of showcasing your personality, without having to renew your outfits every season.
