GIVE

By Juliet Dunham

1 in 4 homeless Americans is an United States Veteran. These men and women are cold, hungry, and in need of help. The Valor Clinic Foundation is providing homeless veterans in northeastern Pennsylvania with food, supplies, and counseling that will help get them into transitional and permanent housing. This 501(c)3 public charity is dedicated to not only providing bare necessities and temporary comforts, but in assuring that life-changing help is offered to veterans in our area. Founder Mark Baylis returned home from service in the United States Army and started volunteering at a local soup kitchen. As a veteran, he connected with other veterans who began relying on him for guidance as they completed VA Medical Services paperwork. Baylis, with every interaction, saw an immense problem. Highly trained, competent soldiers were returning from duty and found themselves lost. Basic adult skills such as resume writing and job interviewing eluded them. Medical issues were not being addressed. The overwhelming majority of them were suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). “Homelessness is a symptom of PTSD. We have to look at long-term solutions for the problem,” Baylis explains. And so, in 2012, Valor Clinic Foundation was born. Baylis, co-founder Tony Cross, their board, and a slew of volunteers work tirelessly on short and long term projects to tackle the serious issue of homeless veterans. “Stand Down” events are held monthly. Homeless veterans are led through a donation walk; supplies include clothing, footwear, and toiletries. Before leaving, the Valor team provides the individual with a pack of high-protein, easy to open food, a hot meal, and a friendly conversation. The largest Valor effort to date is Paul’s House. The shelter, the site of the former Jonas Hotel, opened its doors to its first resident on Monday, October 27. Residents of Paul’s House will partake in the Valor Program- a 90 day training focusing on stress management, PTSD counseling, life skills, job skills, and acclimation to civilian life. The goal of this program is to transition homeless veterans into permanent housing with gainful employment and adequate counseling services. Valor Clinic Foundation needs your help. There are many ways to contribute. For a full list, please visit flairmag.com/valor

FEATURE

planning A guilt-free

Holiday By Juliet Dunham

“We talk a lot about guilTY versus guilt FREE,” explains Jennifer Bayer, Director of the Adult Day Care and Memory Care Services at Pocono Tranquil Gardens. “When you’re home, everything is very task oriented and caring for a loved one becomes another task. When you come here, even for the afternoon, the time is quality time.” For families of Alzheimer’s patients, deciding how and where to care for a family member is challenging. The day-to-day reality of dementia related illness is not easy. During the holidays especially, the demands of life can be too much for a caregiver and neither the patient nor caregiver fully enjoys the spirit of the season. With four different levels of Memory Care at the East Stroudsburg facility, Pocono Tranquil Gardens has options for families endeavouring to provide quality care for a loved one while meeting the demands of life. PTG offers residential personal care and a dedicated Memory Care Unit, but what truly sets this facility apart are its Adult Day Care and Respite Care programs. “We are the only Adult Day Care program in the area,” states CEO Bhavna Chhabria. “Adult Day Care is much different from a senior center,” continues Bayer. “Senior centers are more focused on socializing and do not assist with activities of daily living. They do not assist with meds or getting to the restroom. To come here for the Day Care, clients need to have a need- physical or cognitive.” Respite care is an extended stay at PTG of a week or longer. This care is often sought when a caregiver is ill, is traveling, or perhaps when a family is considering the transition to personal care. Both Day and Respite Care at PTG rely on cognitive therapies. For Bayer and the staff, “Our goal is to maintain current levels of brain function for as long as possible and prevent

14

decline.” They employ therapies that bolster recognition as well as short and long term memory. Reminiscing, journal writing, imagery exercises, physical exercise, technology stations, art therapy, and relaxation are all popular and effective activities from which Day and Respite Care clients benefit. Bayer has also successfully implemented “Play with Purpose.” “We have meaningful, purposeful tasks. We coupon—they LOVE couponing—and match the coupons to grocery lists, set and clear the table for meals, fold some laundry— rewarding tasks they know how to do.” Through all of these activities, the clients have fun and socialize, too! “This is a wonderful option for families who are planning to go skiing or to the water park for the day,” offers Dr. Chhabria. “Their loved ones can come here and benefit greatly from Day Care while they are doing other things.” Adult Day Care also helps families with hygiene, offering grooming and bathing services. These programs truly alleviate guilt for all parties: the caregiver is released from the guilt that they aren’t doing enough or executing tasks perfectly while the patient is released from the guilt of being a burden to someone they love. Trained, caring professionals partnering with families is the benchmark of the successful programs at Pocono Tranquil Gardens. As holiday plans take shape, it is important to plan for Day or Respite Care, too. Take the time to complete paperwork, choose care that suits your family’s needs, and explore insurance coverage. Some patients are eligible for VA coverage or qualify for care through the Area Agency on Aging. All patients are treated with respect, with dignity, and with their best interest at heart. For more information on all of the programs offered and to read testimonials, visit www.poconotranquilgardens.com. To schedule your tour, call 570.426.4000.

Ski Shop

& 940 Snowboards By Karen Tetor

When a Pocono specialty ski and snowboard shop has almost 1,400 “likes” and a perfect 5-star rating on Facebook, the enthusiastic posts quickly reveal the secret: Alpina Ski Shop/940 Snowboards owners Kimberly and Dieter Kirschner regard every customer as a true friend. “‘We want to call you a ‘customer’ only once,” insists Kimberly, who welcomes everyone at the door. “After that, we want to call you ‘friend.’” “Hey! I’ve been looking for you to come in!” beams Kimberly to a woman carrying in her skis for a tuning. “I know you’re looking for new ski pants, and I just got in a style that is going to look great on you!” Kimberly is the store’s ringmaster, centered amidst the colorful winter sports inventory she masterfully selects with a stylistic eye for men, women, and children. Alpina Ski Shop/940 Snowboards draws both skiers and boarders who know that the gear and the goods come with personal service at this one-stop shop that is actually two stores in one. “Dieter!” she then calls back to her husband and business partner. “Pete’s here for his boot fitting!” Dieter, the area’s renowned Master Boot-fitter, holds reign in the rear of the shop. Pete Kearney, a ski instructor at Jack Frost, is one of the host of supplicants who rely upon Dieter’s brilliance in custom-fitting. Pete heads back to the Master. “I have E Quad feet,” laughs Pete. “It’s hard to believe a ski boot could be so comfortable. But it’s Dieter who makes it that way.” Dieter’s throne is his wheeled, duct-tape-patched stool, upon which he darts before the display of Dalbello, Nordica, Fischer, Full Tilt, Apex, and Rossignol ski boots. His gleaming new Nordica boot convection oven (“It heats those boots to 175-185 degrees!”) takes equal place beside his “old, reliable” forced hot air heater, a piece of equipment which has molded boots for all kinds of slopebound feet. “And I’ve seen some pretty weird feet!” laughs Dieter whose custom liners and custom foot beds have ratcheted up ability levels since 1997, when the duo took over the venerable shop. Kimberly is unpacking boxes of new stock. A hot pair of Sorel boots, with fur trim and purple accents. Cuddle-soft Snow Angel under layers. A color-burst of jackets from Patagonia, NILS, Armada, Roxy, and Obermeyer, to name a few. From the rear of the store, Dieter’s voice intones the “truths” that have peppered his dialogue for almost 30 years of equipment sales and service: • “I can make a boot bigger, but I can’t make it smaller.” • “It’s not just the car [the boot]; it’s the driver.” • “Our shop experience in boot fitting allows us to guarantee every boot we sell.” • “That boot-fitter certification isn’t what matters; it’s my experience.” Whether the problem is a bunion or a bum stance, whether the foot is a man, woman or child’s, the entire staff knows boot fit is a key remedy.

“Alpina Ski Shop/940 Snowboards is all about knowledge and quality,” says Kimberly, whose inventory embraces everyone from toddlers to men’s size 5X. She takes pride in all customers, including the many area skiing professionals who rely upon them for gear, sales and service. Likewise, they love equipping young families ready to embark upon a life-long love of the slopes. Kimberly and Dieter are a team whose dedication to “customer care” has turned the full spectrum of customers into friends. Visit Alpina Ski Shop and 940 Snowboards on Route 940 in White Haven, one mile west of Jack Frost Ski Area. For more info, call 570.443.9701, visit 940snowboards.com or find them on Facebook.

HEALTH

“Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.” Though we teach our children to ignore taunts because they cannot be physically hurt by them, evidence shows that words can wound. Bullying is increasingly recognized not just as a hurdle of childhood, but as a public health issue with serious, longterm consequences. Bullying can have a lasting impact on mental health and has been identified as a contributing factor to substance abuse and even suicide. Children who are bullied are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, and other health complaints, even into adulthood. They are also more likely to miss or drop out of school and see their GPA and test scores drop. In rare cases, bullied children have been known to react violently: 12 of 15 school shootings during the 1990s included shooters who had been bullied. But bullying doesn’t just affect the child being bullied; children who bully are at a higher risk of engaging in violent and self-destructive behavior through adolescence and into adulthood. They are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, start sexual activity earlier, be convicted of criminal activity, and be abusive toward partners and children as adults. Bullying can be verbal, such as name-calling and threats; social, meant to hurt the victim’s reputation or relationships, such as spreading rumors or public embarrassment; or physical, by hurting the victim’s body or damaging his or her possessions. Bullying is aggressive behavior that is repetitive and involves a real or perceived power imbalance, such as popularity or physical strength. Though any child can be a victim of bullying, it can occur due to a disability or a negative perception of a child’s sexual orientation, religion, race, or ethnicity. Bullying has recently become more pervasive and difficult for victims to escape through the emergence of cyberbullying, which takes place electronically and follows adolescents home. Sadly, bullying can be experienced in adulthood as well as adolescence. Similar behaviors can be found in the workplace and in the home and can escalate into hazing, harassment, intimate partner violence, or stalking. These behaviors require different prevention and responses

46

Local Flair

and are often subject to federal and state laws, which do not apply to youth bullying. Many children who are bullied do not tell an adult for fear of rejection or retaliation by the bully or their peers, fear of being seen as weak or being judged, or because they have feelings of social isolation and humiliation. Signs that your child may be a victim of bullying include:  Frequent or unexplained injuries  Lost or damaged property  Difficulty sleeping or nightmares  Faking illness or frequent headaches or stomach-aches  Drop in academic achievement  Sudden avoidance of friends or social situations

In addition to modeling kindness and respect and keeping up open communication with your child, help him or her to understand what bullying looks like and how to react when it happens. Consider discussing these strategies to help keep your children happy and safe:  Encourage children to stay near adults or in a group of friends.  Encourage children to report bullying to a trusted adult.  Discuss how to safely stand up to bullies by using humor, clearly

and confidently saying “Stop,” and walking away from the situation if these strategies do not work.  Encourage children to get help or show kindness when they see another child being bullied.  Report to police or school authorities if bullying has escalated and is endangering your child.

2014 A Year of Education

For investors, 2014 might go down as the year in which they received an education. The economy did not shift into a higher gear, inflation pressures abated rather than increased and interest rates did not climb to the heavens as many were predicting this time last year. WS&M LLC was not among the firms predicting sky-high interest rates, booming employment and double-digit equity market gains. Although we did believe that long-term interest rates (such as the ten-year U.S. Treasury note yield) would be higher than where it is today, we were not among market participants who believed that long-term rates were on a long-term upward trajectory. Our forecast for the 10-year note yield was the low to mid 3.00% area, but with one caveat. We said that if our call was off, it would be because long-term interest rates would be lower rather than higher than our forecast. Thus far, this has been the case. Weak inflation, poor wage growth and dysfunctional foreign economies have put downward pressure on prices. This is due both to weaker demand for raw materials and finished goods and the resulting strengthening of the U.S. dollar. In the equity market; we did not believe that the stock market would repeat the performance of 2013. Our call was for a 5% or, possibly 10% increase in large cap stock prices. At the time of this writing, the Dow Jones Average was up about 2.2% on the year with about seven weeks to go. The small-cap centric Russell 2000 index was down about 3% at the time of this writing. Although the situation in the markets could change by the time December 31st rolls around, it would appear that our call to move up in quality was the correct strategy.

If 2014 was the year investors received an education, 2015 might be the year that they are taken to school. By “taken to school,” we mean that investors who have relied on assets which have benefitted inordinately from accommodative and have “reaped the wind,” might reap the whirlwind on 2015. As such, we are not sanguine on aggressive investments such as junk bonds and floating rate bank loans. Our focus for 2015 is on high-quality dividend-paying stocks, investment grade corporate bonds and essential service and state general obligation municipal debt. For aggressive investors, BB-rated high yield corporate debt might be appropriate. We would like to state that suitability matters most. No one investment is appropriate for all investors. Consult your financial advisor or contact Wealth Strategies & Management, LLC before investing.

Investing in the bond market is subject to certain risks including market, interest rate, issuer, credit and inflation risk. Bonds may be worth more or less than their original cost when redeemed. Floating rate bank loans are loans issued by below investment grade companies for short term funding purposes with higher yield than short term debt. Bank loans are often less liquid than other types of debt instruments. There is no assurance that the liquidation of any collateral from a secured bank loan would satisfy the borrower's obligation, or that such collateral could be liquidated. Investing in lower-rated securities involves greater risk than higher-rated securities. High Yield/junk bonds (grade BB or below) are not investment grade securities, and are subject to higher interest

48

Local Flair

rate, credit and liquidity risks than those graded BBB and above. They generally should be part of a diversified portfolio for sophisticated investors. Municipal bonds are subject to availability and change in price. They are subject to market and interest rate risk if sold prior to maturity. Bond values will decline as interest rates rise. Interest income may be subject to the alternative minimum tax. Municipal bonds are federally tax-free but other state and local taxes may apply. The payment of dividends is not guaranteed. Companies may reduce or eliminate the payment of dividends at any given time.
