A BRIEF HISTORY OF SHAWNEE MOUNTAIN In 1975, Karl Hope, an avant-garde developer, added skiing to the amenities for his new timeshare program in Shawnee. He opened three trails, two lifts and a cozy lodge at the summit of Shawnee Mountain. In the first few weeks skiing was free (the cashier’s window wasn’t completed), then the price went up to a whopping $6.00! Complimentary coffee and donut service came from the tailgate of a pickup, and rentals were available from the back of a U-Haul. Three years later, operations moved with the new Base Lodge and a rental building. In 1979, Shawnee Development, chaired by Charlie Kirkwood, purchased Shawnee Mountain. Spring of 1982 saw the construction of Shawnee Place, a play & water park at the base of Shawnee Mountain, which operates each summer. 1983 saw night skiing more than double the skier turnout. The ski area expansion continued throughout the 1980’s with more lifts, more trails, expanded snowmaking and a massive rental building. The early 1990’s saw the addition of a Terrain Park and Half Pipe for snowboarding, and a new quad lift to the summit. Today, owned by Ski Shawnee, Inc., Shawnee Mountain has 23 slopes and trails, a nationally recognized ski school with outstanding children’s programs, and a new snow tubing park. State-of-the-art snowmaking and grooming, the nation’s largest ski rental shop, a half-pipe and terrain park, tremendous lift capacity of 12,600 skiers per hour and a service-oriented staff make Shawnee Mountain special.

a pocono hidden gem THE WONDERS OF NATURE AND OUTER SPACE

words | DEBBIE BURKE

Where you can explore the nature around us and the stars and planets above us, all in one place? Look no further than East Stroudsburg University. ESU is home to the Schisler Museum of Wildlife & Natural History and McMunn Planetarium located in the Hoeffner Science and Technology Center. The museum and planetarium are both named for alumni who continue to support ESU’s legacy of providing an innovative learning environment: Arthur and Fannie Schisler ’62, and Charles A. “Tony” ’69 and Patricia Lythgoe ’68 McMunn. The Planetarium, which opened in 2008, and the Museum, opened in 2016, have hosted more than 15,000 visitors from around the world. The Schisler Museum provides visitors with the opportunity to tour the world and experience the natural habitats of over 140 mounted specimens in five world-class exhibits: The Frozen North - Arctic Circle; The Cold Forest - Alaska and Canada; Canyon Country - American Southwest; The Verdant East - Pocono region; and the African Bush – Miombo Woodlands.

In the 150-seat planetarium, visitors can step into the cosmos with featured films narrated by celebrities like Tom Hanks, Liam Neeson and Mark Hamill. Films shown, using the Spitz projection system, are digitally displayed onto a 30-foot dome which is similar to systems used at the Hayden Planetarium in New York. Cathy Klingler, Curator of the Schisler Museum of Wildlife & Natural History and McMunn Planetarium, said, “One of our most popular programs is the Nature by Night Flashlight Tours. Visitors explore the museum in the dark guided only by the glow of their flashlight and learn about the nocturnal habits and which animals are awake while we sleep.” Theses tours are scheduled on the first Friday of each month and registration is required. Cathy added, “We are expanding our programming to reach visitors of all types. Our family programs encourage intergenerational exploration and discovery, while our group programs—for everyone from schools to Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, to special needs programs to senior centers—are aligned with state and national educational standards.”

The Schisler Museum of Wildlife & Natural History and McMunn Planetarium are open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is $6.00 for adults, $4.00 children (3-17yrs.) and seniors 60 yrs. and over. Group visits and special event rentals are also available. For more information, visit www.esu.edu/museum or call (570) 422-2705.

FLOW LINE & COLOR BY ARTIST

sean turrell

words | DEBBIE BURKE

Artist Sean Turrell has received accolades and recognition all the way from New York City, Tampa and Boca Raton to Italy, France and Malta. Born in East Haddam, CT and schooled at the University of South Florida, Sean lived in Delray Beach, Florida until making his home in the Poconos in 2005. “We visited in 1999,” he said. “It’s pretty, it’s close to great museums and I liked the mountains.”

The people are faceless, he added, because they don’t represent a single person; they represent “the plural.” The wood for his sculpture – which features long, fluid shapes reminiscent of the human body – is not so much found as it finds him. “And if circumstances work out,” he said, “I make it into art.”

Sean primarily considers himself a sculptor but also expresses himself through photography and painting. At any one time, he said, he’s working on many pieces with many different media. His connection to Malta came about when an artist he had exhibited with moved to Europe and invited Sean to take part in a show that would open in the small, sunny Mediterranean country. “The show then travelled to three other European cities over the remainder of the year,” he added.

Because art is often enjoyed outdoors with its natural, hardto-beat lighting, Sean has a few public art pieces. Locally, he painted the train mural found on Main Street in Stroudsburg. Another piece is outside a train museum in Boca Raton.

Inspired by life and death, Sean’s recurring themes include womanhood and femininity, childbirth, religion, and sex, because, as he said, “they continue to be issues of our times.”

In June, Sean will kick off his exhibition schedule and will feature artists “from near and far.”

The Turrell Art Studios at 4 North 6th Street in Stroudsburg was initially opened as a custom frame shop. “Since then, the scope has expanded into a fine art gallery,” Sean added.

For more information, visit www.seanturrell.com or follow him on Facebook @seanturrell.

ROLLING HILLS GARLIC VINEGAR rich in history, taste, & aroma words and photos |KEVIN CONROY The tranquility of Rolling Hills Farm in Saylorsburg is evident from the moment you set foot on the property. Ducks and geese quack contentedly, chickens cluck and scurry, and a big chocolate lab comes bouncing down the drive. Rob Schwartz, Rolling Hills co-owner, is out in the field on his tractor. He waves as a voice of greeting comes from the farmhouse. Sheila Schwartz, his wife, walks with you towards Rob. The rhubarb is beginning to sprout on the edge of a lower field but the garlic is going strong. It thrives in the mineral-rich glacial soil found in this region. In this field under the sunlight is where Rolling Hills vinegar begins. The vinegar business was started by Sheila’s uncle Frank Pollock. What began as a few cloves of garlic floating around in a bottle of cider vinegar has, through years of effort, transformed into a thriving trade. Behind the Schwartz’s beautifully restored and renovated 1863 brick post-and-beam farmhouse stands a small, whitewashed stone building – the aging room. The aroma of cider vinegar and garlic fills the air. Rolling Hills Farm has been in Sheila’s family some seventy years since it was purchased by her grandfather, Sheldon Pollock. He ran the property until he died in 1956. His wife and children shouldered the responsibility for the farm until son Frank became its sole operator in 1974. Frank was a founding member of the Monroe Farmers Market and a driving force behind the Pocono Garlic Festival. Rob reminisces about sitting at the table with Frank taste-testing secret batches of vinegar identified only by number. In 1994, Rob became Frank’s associate in Rolling Hills Garlic Vinegar, and in the late 1990’s brother-in-law Steve Marenski became a full partner in the business. Rob and Sheila moved onto the farmstead in 2010, and are restoring the acreage to be the thriving produce farm it once was. The aging room is small for a dwelling but, filled with barrels, seems perfect for its present use. The smells of garlic and vinegar permeate the air. The aroma is one of intense freshness, then a sharp but almost delicate smell of apple cider vinegar with wood tones. The Schwartz’s use only all-organic local apple cider vinegar from one specific farm to make two versions of their product, one lightly sweetened with brown sugar, the other sweetened with local honey so smooth you can drink it.

You can find their delicious products at the Monroe Farmers Market as well as on the Rolling Hills website at www.rollinghillsgarlicvinegar. com. Rolling Hills Farm is located at Meixsell Valley Road in Saylorsburg PA, tel. (610) 381-6515.

The year 1994 heralded two firsts in the Poconos, the first Pocono Garlic Festival and the first time Rolling Hills Garlic Vinegar became available to the public. Rolling Hills sold 256 bottles that day. Now, each year, they sell 16,000 bottles, most of it at garlic festivals in the Hudson Valley, Easton, Connecticut, and the Poconos.

the poconos We all know that the Poconos are famous as a four-season destination, but there’s something very special about the summertime…it’s being outside. The Poconos have recently launched a marketing program that accents a lifestyle promoted in part by the “outside.” Whether it’s canoeing on the Delaware River, hiking the scenic trails at Skytop Resort or the Appalachian Trail, trout fishing in any of the high-quality streams in the Poconos or simply mowing your lawn at that perfect vacation home you’ve always dreamed about, it all happens in the Pocono Mountains. Owning a vacation home may require upkeep, but owners can add real market value to their getaway by taking simple steps that definitely have a payback when selling the home. New mulch is certainly one way to add value. Pruning those trees, shrubs and bushes while highlighting your home can also add value, making sure the grass is well-kept, and planting an array of flowers are all enticing to that buyer coming to look at your home. Today’s buyer in the Pocono Mountains is definitely looking more at the lifestyle

and outdoor activities available to them either in their community or within a short drive when they purchase their Pocono getaway. A number of great communities in the Poconos offer outdoor swimming pools or great golf courses that cater not just to Dad and Uncle Billy, because today, families love to golf. Understanding that more people are interested in and taking part in outdoor activities, it’s not just about the kitchen and bathrooms, but instead what’s available to the buyer outside the home. There are a number of homes and townhomes available for sale throughout the Poconos and the surrounding region that offer exceptional views of the mountains. Whether it’s Shawnee Valley, Northslope I, II or III with views of the Shawnee Ski Area or the fantastic mountain views from Lake in the Clouds, they all offer what the buyer is looking for. Homes with views, in most cases, will always maintain their market value. Outdoor family fun begins at Lake Naomi. From the renowned Lake Naomi Swim Club for kids of all ages

THE OUTDOOR C APITAL OF THE WORLD

who compete with other private communities, to their championship tennis amenities offered to owners and their guests, to sailing a multi-colored sailfish in Lake Naomi itself or simply enjoying outdoor arts and crafts at their award-winning kids’ program, it’s all about the outside. Lakefront homes, a big draw to buyers, are readily available and in certain cases can be million dollar-plus homes. Lake Wallenpaupack is one of those destinations. With 51 miles of shoreline, it is one of the only lakes in the Poconos that offers motor-boating. There’s nothing more satisfying than getting up early in the morning when the water is calm to go waterskiing, tubing, or fishing from your own dock. And for canoeing and kayaking, there are literally close to 100 lakes all offering the best in boating. Now may be the right time for you to purchase that lakefront home. All these activities, destinations and selections truly make the Pocono Mountains the Outdoor Capital of the World.

THE WATERSCAPE OF THEIR

DREAMS words | DEBBIE BURKE

When Paula and Kevin Palestino retired and moved to the Poconos in 2013, they wanted to bring a little bit of nature with them. They already enjoyed a koi pond at their New Jersey home, and with the relocation, they had a vision to do even more. “We have always enjoyed having aquariums and pets, so it seemed only natural to have a koi pond at our home,” said Paula Palestino. They contacted the construction coordinator at John Gilroy’s office at Gilroy Northeast Inc., a Tannersvillebased excavation and construction firm. In 2013, the work began even before the Palestinos moved in: John Gilroy installed the oval-shaped main pond and built a patio with walkways. They also built the turtle and goldfish ponds. “This made it possible for us to transfer the fish and turtles when we moved in,” said Paula.

The Palestinos chose Maya Beige Stepping Stones by Techo-Bloc for the walkways, surrounded by river rock leading to to the ponds. The new patio of approximately 502 square feet was designed with the Techo-Bloc Elena Random Pattern style in the color Sandalwood which included a chestnut brown Hera border. John suggested a smaller Hera border to create a better overall design. The main patio had a random mix design. Kevin said, “The patio made the yard a pleasure to be in, and a functional entertaining area.” Last summer, Gilroy Northeast installed a new filtration system and an upper pond, complete with a beautiful, soothing waterfall, colorful irises and water lilies. Paula was pleased with choosing Gilroy Northeast to beautify their outdoor living space, stating, “We are very happy with the pond, the patio and the walkways that John and the entire Gilroy Northeast staff installed.” Gilroy Northeast transforms outdoor spaces in both the residential and commercial realms, with a portfolio that includes water parks, shopping malls, restaurants, churches, parking lots, concrete installations, sidewalks, demolition, sheds, lawns, and commercial snow removal.

Making Home Improvements or Buying a Second Home? with Melisa D.B. Mersini Vice President Wealth Strategies & Management LLC Stroudsburg, PA Office: 570-424-1555 wsandm.com

It’s that time of year when home improvements and buying second homes are on the minds of many. Careful decisions and planning can help save money and avoid potential problems.

remains available without interest being incurred. It would be beneficial to meet with your bank regardless of the size project to see all options available and determine which would be the most suitable for you.

Using do-it-yourself materials that cost a few thousand dollars or less is generally an easier spending decision than those projects with higher costs, permits and contractors. Many do-it-yourself home stores have enticing offers promising no interest for a set period, and a deadline to pay the amount in full. It is important to understand that if the balance is not paid in full by the end of the interest-free period, all otherwise free interest will accrue and be added immediately to the account balance. The typical interest rate charges are between 17.99% to 26% regardless of your credit score and history. Be sure to understand the terms and have an action plan to pay the account off before the interest-free deadline, or the project could cost you more than you intended.

As part of your financial planning, an investment account can be another source of funds to cover the cost of the improvement. Saving for retirement has become the norm; however, saving an investment for non-retirement needs is often overlooked. If you have an investment account, be sure to work closely with your advisor. He or she will be instrumental in providing a planning path to successfully meet your needs and desires.

When the improvement becomes larger, you may opt to take a home equity loan. These loans offer a lower rate. Home Equity loans typically require a larger minimum lending request such as $25,000 or greater. Even if you do not need the larger amount you can still apply for a Home Equity Line of Credit. HELOCs provide a larger approved credit line that can be drawn when needed by means of check-writing or a debit card. Any amount not borrowed

The purchase of a second home has many considerations. How will the purchase affect retirement? How should the second home be titled for estate purposes? What expenses can be written off if I rent out the property? Before you purchase another home, seek the advice of your financial advisor, CPA, and real estate attorney. If your planning consists of simply depositing money blindly in an investment account, you may miss potential strategies to optimize the bigger picture. It’s your financial future; take the time to discover how effective planning can potentially help you reach your goals about yours and your family’s financial future.

magic UNFOLD

SCENE ONE WATCH THE

BY FARDA LANDSCAPING Warmer weather is here!

And our readers have their outdoor spaces on their minds. We sat down with Anthony Farda, of Farda Landscaping and Excavating, to discuss important considerations for choosing the right landscaper. Here’s our first look at an in-progress project that we’ll be sharing with readers over the next several issues. Local Flair: Clients have many choices when selecting a landscaper. It might be new construction, a renovation, or improving an existing landscape. What factors should they consider to choose the right landscaper? Anthony Farda: I would say first and foremost, you should be looking at references. Being in business for so long, I think I am most proud of the relationships I’ve built that span decades. My goal is to earn the trust and confidence of my clients. The greatest compliment is being called back for additional projects year after year. The majority of my clients are referrals.

Local Flair: Do you have suggestions to help homeowners envision a design or improvement for their property? Anthony Farda: It comes down to combining your property’s challenges and potential with your lifestyle. Managing drainage, sun, shade, wind and wildlife concerns come to mind. I enjoy problem-solving. I work closely with clients to make sure that they understand all of these factors, and then I propose a design that’s appropriate for them. I emphasize the importance of looking ahead and performing work in the correct order. Landscaping can add substantially to a home’s value, but it’s an investment. It has to be done in the right sequence. I spend time with clients, gain an understanding of their priorities and provide them with a carefully planned design that can be completed in phases as needs change and budgets allow. We even offer interest-free financing to qualified customers to overcome budget hurdles.

Secondly, be sure the proposal they submit encompasses exactly what you have agreed upon. A lower bid may seem like the frugal choice, but I would encourage people to do a close side-by-side comparison of what is being provided; from total square footage to product quality and the size of plant material. Each landscaper may come in with a different vision for your project so it’s important to settle on a design and obtain bids specific to that.

Local Flair: What trends are you seeing in the industry?

Local Flair: What sets Farda Landscaping apart?

Local Flair: You’ll be sharing a start-to-finish project with Local Flair readers over the next few issues?

Anthony Farda: I think it’s our years of experience and ability to look at a rough site or an outdated landscape, and envision its potential while understanding its challenges. Having our own fleet of heavy equipment and skilled operators allows us to take the job from start to finish, and I am personally on every job site. Our niche is creating designs that complement the style of the home, blend seamlessly with the surroundings, and fit the lifestyle of the homeowner. The natural beauty of the Poconos lends itself to incorporating hand-laid natural stone walls and walks, and native plantings. Farda Landscaping combines those features in a unique way.

36 Local Flair | June/July 2017

Anthony Farda: Outdoor living spaces are still top projects. Popular items are fire, water and kitchen features, adding tremendous financial value to a home; but also personal value, through the way they bring family and friends together. Sustainable plantings and native plantings are also a budding trend.

Anthony Farda: Yes, this project is a new construction on a raw site. There are a lot of interesting grades and outdoor areas with various potential uses. I hope readers enjoy seeing this first look and then watching the project unfold over the next couple of issues. We’re excited to share our process with readers to help give them a better idea of the work we do.

Stay tuned for the next two issues of Local Flair as this project transforms into a thing of beauty!

41°03’10.4”N 75°08’42.2”W

The newest park in Smithfield Township is not easy to find. That is because it is not yet officially open as a park. GPS won’t get you there, nor is there a sign at the parking entrance. Go up Marshalls Creek Road from the intersection of Business Route 209 at the Marshalls Creek shopping center. Look for what appears to be a large, abandoned parking lot on the right. If you park and bushwhack inland and up the creek, you will be rewarded with the sight of Marshalls Creek Falls. This hidden gem is one of the highest and most stately cascades in the area. Standing below, it is difficult to imagine you are only ten minutes from the road and close to civilization. Like much of Smithfield Township, the falls is a reminder that we are living in a world parallel to a primeval time that is unchanged by the ages of man.

From Jazz to Doo Wop to Mozart:

THE 2017 POCONO MOUNTAINS MUSIC FESTIVAL

Bob Dorough

words | DEBBIE BURKE

The Pocono Mountains Music Festival (founded in 2009 as Buck Hill Skytop Music Festival) is bringing another amazing musical lineup for the 2017 season. Among the many scheduled crown jewel performances of the Festival will be its special tribute and presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award to local jazz musician Bob Dorough, whose wildly famous “Schoolhouse Rock!” songs have made him an American icon. Perhaps appropriately enough, this will occur at Stroudsburg High School on August 5th with Pop Music entertainment by The Doo Wop Project, featuring the rich voices of five Broadway stars, on the program. This season kicks off with a pre-Festival Friend-Raiser, with Tony-nominated actress and cabaret sensation Karen Akers. The Festival then follows with the beloved Broadway classic The Music Man in Concert, with its very delightful and recognizable score. Back by popular demand, an encore performance by Lincoln Center’s amazing National Chorale is not to be missed! It will feature music by Beethoven, Mozart, and Gershwin. Jazz duo Liz Callaway and Ann Hampton Callaway infuse “Sibling Revelry” with smooth harmonies and sweet syncopation, while Classical Jam shares its creative approach to music, engaging the audience with humor and talent. “Danny and the Rocket” – a new musical theater work which is a romantic musical full of plot surprises – is presented in collaboration with New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts-Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program.

Closing the Festival will be the Performing Arts Camp Showcase. Camp students will present their own concert after honing their talents from the previous two-week intensive camp with industry professionals. Performances are held at various Pocono venues including Pocono Mountain East High School, Skytop Lodge, Buck Hill Falls, East Stroudsburg University and Stroudsburg High School. The Festival’s Founder and Board President, David S. Mazza, M.D., has maintained the focus to not only bring extraordinary entertainment to the Poconos, but also to provide a strong educational component for students. The Festival’s library program is now in its fifth year. Festival artists use the power of their art form to inspire and excite the program’s Young Readers. Another element of the Festival’s ongoing commitment to the region’s youth is the Pocono Mountains Performing Arts Camp for choreography, acting/art, musical theater, and percussion, which welcomes rising 6th graders through college seniors. The Pocono Mountains Performing Arts Camp provides a broad cultural experience that is completely unique to our area. The two-week summer program offers fascinating daily workshops in music, theater, dance, the visual arts, and master classes with prominent industry professionals. Tuition is competitively priced at $300 and scholarships are available. The Pocono Mountains Performing Arts Camp encourages all students to apply, whether or not they are considering a career in the arts. No audition is necessary to take part in this inspirational two-week intensive camp. The Pocono Mountains Music Festival is a 501©3 not-for-profit charity organization, and is beginning its eighth year through years of constant generosity by its donors and patrons, local businesses and sponsors, and the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts. The Festival donates 10% of its tickets to local not-for-profits, and includes many other local arts organizations in its sphere. Please visit the Festival website for a closer look at the synergistic relationships with our community. This year, Ray “Skip” Sheetz is the Director of Development. Skip, as he is known in the community, is fund raising for every aspect of the Festival. For more information please visit www.poconofest.org.

MEET Pocono Mountains THE Visitors Bureau NEW CEO CHRISTOPHER BARRETT, CEO Taking the helm from the retiring Carl Wilgus, the PMVB has just appointed its new president and CEO, Christopher Barrett. Chris has served as the Executive Vice President/COO/CFO for Target Media and Target Digital, a media firm headquartered in Harrisburg, and before that, he held multiple senior management roles in sales, marketing and theme park operations with Hershey Entertainment & Resorts. Chris is a graduate of Penn State University, served on the Penn State Harrisburg Board of Trustees, and most recently served on the Derry Township Board of Education (Hershey Schools) as Treasurer, along with many other officer roles over his twenty-year tenure.

Local Flair: How will you make your assessment of the strengths of this region, along with determining the areas that need more love and care? Chris Barrett: This region is well-known as a powerhouse destination. The PMVB has done a wonderful job of building a new chapter for the Pocono Mountains from a branding standpoint. One only needs to look at the recent capital investments. They tell the story. Local Flair: Please describe how you’ve accomplished successful branding campaigns. Chris: By listening, observing and researching. Sometimes the answer is simple, other times complex. Collaboration is key. I also never let my ego get in the way. A mentor once told me that “ego will get you every time.” It was the best counsel I’ve ever received. Local Flair: How does one successfully promote a destination? Chris: The people who breathe the life into the destination (the owners, general managers, sales and marketing and operations leaders, and front line team members), at the end of the day, they make the difference. They are the storytellers who give the product a life. I’ve always liked getting to know them as they help me build the brand aspects and essence in my own mind. Local Flair: What are your preliminary impressions of the Poconos, and do you have a direction in mind to market the region? Chris: My impressions have been positive from the start. I’ve always had a great deal of admiration and respect for both Carl Wilgus and Bob Uguccioni, my predecessors. I’ve sought their advice on many occasions (when I was the President/ CEO of Discover Lancaster), as I always considered the Pocono Mountains a top-shelf destination. My direction is simple: 1. To provide value to the incoming guest by strong planning content; 2. To provide value for our members by helping

them in any way possible, from a marketing and promotions perspective; 3. And, I would also be remiss if I didn’t mention the quality of the team working here at the Bureau. They are top-notch and up to speed on the digital changes that are affecting the market at a breakneck pace. The destination is lucky to have them. Local Flair: You have a wide experience base in theme parks and entertainment. How will that translate to the Pocono market? Chris: I was extremely fortunate to have had a great career with Hershey Entertainment & Resorts. That experience taught me the absolute importance of always giving the guests high value products and experiences, and that they are always right…. no matter what! Local Flair: You wrote a jingle for the Dutch Wonderland Family Amusement Park. How did that come to be? Chris: It was a collaboration of many talented people. It started one day before we reopened the park under the Hershey banner as key team members were eating lunch. Someone said in the conversation that Dutch Wonderland is a place where kids can be king. From that point I developed the copy line “It’s a Kingdom for Kids.” We eventually added the product characters (Princess Brooke and the Knight) that were developed from scratch. Our first Princess is now an anchor for a major news outlet. She was amazing and really made the character what it is today. I still have the original sketches and product characters that were developed into collectibles. It’s one of my best memories. Local Flair: Did you relocate your family from the Harrisburg area? Chris: Not yet. I want to spend time taking in the whole area.

MARKETreport

by BOB KELLY KELLY REALTY GROUP KELLER WILLIAMS REAL ESTATE

Monroe County Average Home Sale Prices skyrocket

It is a pleasure

to sit down and pen an article on the Monroe County real estate market, and for that matter, our entire area and the nation, as we are in a very good time for residential real estate.

of people who are reintroduced to the Poconos in such a positive manner.

As I predicted in earlier articles, many of the great economic development projects are truly bearing fruit in the real estate market. Some examples are Kalahari Resorts Waterpark, Aquatopia at Camelback Resort, the new St. Luke’s Medical Center, all of the Lehigh Valley Health Network - Pocono projects, and the vast expansion Sanofi has embarked on for research and manufacturing.

Our state and county governments need to pay close attention to infrastructure in these projects. The current lag in highway and interchange investment and the growing traffic issues are only a few items which could slow the great potential being unleashed in the county, driving not only real estate, but also our local economy. Left unchecked or on the current timelines, there is a risk for new visitors to be discouraged before ever having the opportunity to experience our great attractions and vast outdoor lifestyle.

As we move into 2017, even more new projects lurk on the horizon for Monroe County, such as the recently announced 200,000 square foot Ripley’s Aquarium and the yet-to-be-named indoor amusement park. These projects and many more to follow will only continue to drive the number

In Monroe County after nine straight years of decline in pending home sales, that trend finally reversed in 2016 as home sale prices rose 9.6% and homes on the market dropped 30.4%. This very positive trend has continued into 2017 in a big way. The first quarter brought very

encouraging news that home sale prices in Monroe County continued to rise, now showing an average home sale price increase of 16.1% over the past 12 months. Inventory is also down with the past 12 months coming in at -29%. As we begin to experience the dog days of summer, we can be hopeful these numbers continue due to the lack of homes for sale in the county. If interest rates continue in check and no national economic hiccups occur, this could turn out to be a fantastic year for Monroe County real estate!

MAMMOGRAM

words | DEBBIE BURKE

Advanced detection and diagnostic technologies for breast health are becoming more readily available, and thank goodness for that. In Monroe County, St. Luke’s University Health Network has recently gone live with their 3D mammograms. According to Dr. Joseph Russo, Section Chief of Women’s Imaging for St. Luke’s University Health Network, “3D mammogram technology has been shown to find 50% more breast cancers than traditional mammography.” It was a priority, he added, for the team to offer this technology to the patients in Monroe County, and St. Luke’s is also installing 3D at the Wind Gap site, which goes live this summer. In total, 3D technology is available at five of their 13 women’s imaging sites, which will increase to eight sites by the end of the summer. Most women are unaware that as far as the potential for breast cancer, having dense breasts is a greater risk factor than having a first degree relative with breast cancer. 3D technology is a particular benefit to those with dense breasts, because it is a more sophisticated tool for the radiologist to discern more subtle cancerous areas.

“We are detecting breast cancer at a rate often 20% higher than the national average,” said Dr. Russo. St. Luke’s has fewer callbacks and fewer biopsies because of “the outstanding abilities” of their dedicated breast imaging team of physicians who are only reading breast. According to Michele Giletto, Network Director of Women’s Imaging at St. Luke’s, “Nothing is as important as the physician who is reading the study.” Leaving behind the “one size fits all” model, personalized medicine is taking over numerous subspecialties and, Dr. Russo acknowledged, breast imaging is no exception. St. Luke’s has developed a personalized screening program that takes into account a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer as well as her breast density before recommending the optimum screening regimen. “I believe that the foreseeable future won’t be in the development of new technologies but in the development of the appropriate usage of these technologies,” he said. “This should not be a time when women stop getting mammograms as the media would imply, but a time when women begin to take advantage of imaging tools that were not available to their mothers and grandmothers.”

MUSIC AMONG THE REEDS

words | DEBBIE BURKE

His musical inclination began at age 6

when he first heard jazz masters Charlie Parker and Dave Brubeck. At 12, Spencer Reed followed his brother’s footsteps and learned guitar. But until he was 15, he thought he was going to be a doctor. Then in high school, he said, “I realized I wanted to be a musician.” Spencer’s professional career started at the young age of 18 when he began singing for a Bronx, NY band called “The Soul Distributors.” Eventually he landed gigs with superstar Chris Towns (who worked with Count Basie) and Kalil Madi, the former drummer for Billie Holliday. Through his agent at the time, Spencer got a gig “on a day’s notice” at Tamiment Resort in the Poconos. “I had hardly heard of the Poconos,” he said. The Pocono Mountains has a rich musical and entertainment legacy: Sid Cesar, Imogene Coca, Dick Shawn and Norman Lear, who wrote plays for the Tamiment, bringing a migration of show-seeking music lovers from New York City. Spencer’s agent had arranged for some work at Tamiment, where he and his wife Nancy moved on very short notice. They started getting work as a duet, with both of them playing guitar and singing. Nancy is a jazz bassist and vocalist. It was her scatting style that caught the attention of Steve Jakubowitz of the Tannserville Inn. At that point, work became steadier. Then another stroke of luck occurred – the Delaware Water Gap’s very own COTA, or Celebration of the Arts. Nancy and Spencer (who now live in Stroudsburg) were added to the musical lineup for the very first COTA festival in 1978. “It was pivotal for us,” said Spencer. “It was our first direct association with the legends who lived up the road,” he said, referencing Phil Woods, Rick Chamberlain and Bob Dorough.

As their careers grew, they were invited time and again to play COTA as well as at the iconic and oldest continuously running jazz club, the Deer Head Inn. COTA is now in its 40th year. The annual Delaware Water Gap’s COTA comes around this September 8, 9 and 10. It kicks off on Friday evening with music, wine and art at the gallery nearby, followed by wallto-wall music all day Saturday and Sunday. “COTA is our favorite annual event. It’s an extremely humbling experience for me every time. The best part is hearing and seeing all of the incredible players up close in the context of our unique

It feels like a big party and everybody is invited.” Nancy and Spencer festival.

will play that Sunday at the gazebo at the nearby Church of the Mountain. In August, Nancy and Spencer will perform at one of their favorite outdoor venues, The Settlers Inn near Lake Wallenpaupack for Wally Lake Fest. This is also a three-day event and it will be held from August 25 through August 27. Spencer is all about giving back to his community through teaching. Besides giving private lessons for many years, he teaches guitar and jazz lab at Blair Academy, gives free guitar lessons at the Castle Inn, and serves as band director at East Stroudsburg’s Notre Dame school system at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. His most exciting news at the moment was the launch this May of the Castle Inn Music Show on Blue Ridge TV-13. As the host of the show, Spencer says he’s thrilled with the lineup of musical guests, most of whom will be local. The show airs on Mondays at 4 p.m., Wednesdays at 9 p.m., and Saturday mornings at 9:30 a.m.
