hen I entered the 30,000-square-foot showroom off Newport Boulevard that is von Hemert Interiors and Furniture Sales, I felt like a kid that had snuck into their parents’ closet and was now rubbing up against the expensive fur coats. I glanced at a price tag hanging off a nearby kitchen chair inlaid with intricate beautiful designs. The chair alone costs close to what I would pay in rent next month. My sister drooled over the Swarovski crystals glimmering in the afternoon sunlight on another gorgeous throne-like chair. Carrie von Hemert, Vice President and co-owner of von Hemert Interiors, came quickly out of her office to show us around. She told me wonderful stories of their family’s rich history. She took time to address all my interests from travels to what it feels like to furnish the homes of the rich and famous. Despite my intimidating surroundings, Carrie made us feel like we were among family, and wasted no time in teaching me about the finer things in life, which I can look forward to someday, too.
