HOW IT C AME TO BE FROM THE BEGINNING • The Certified Farmers’ Markets began in 2008 with the opening of the Palm Springs location. Shortly after in the fall, the La Quinta location kicked off. And then the following year, the Palm Desert market opened.

• “The purpose from the very beginning was to provide an economic platform for small family farms in California. They are farming in a traditional way— farming a variety of produce, which allows customers to eat products that were picked the day before, so they are literally getting the freshest products possible,” says Megan Goehring, general manager of Certified Farmers’ Markets of Coachella Valley.

ON MY WAY! • The Certified Farmers’ Market La Quinta is open on Sundays from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The market runs through the end of April and opens back up again in October. For additional information visit www.certifiedfarmersmarkets.org.

AN ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT • Goehring notes, “In addition to the farms, we provide an opportunity for small culinary entrepreneurs to sell their products without taking the big risk of opening a brick and mortar.” Small businesses often begin their journey at a farmers market before launching into something bigger.

A HELPING HAND • “Because we are under the nonprofit Palm Springs Cultural Center, we can apply for community and federal grants to make this high-quality food available to everyone in the Coachella Valley,” says Goehring. Those who are unemployed are also able to take advantage of the 10 for 10 program that is in place.

FRUITS & VEGGIES

JOY IN THE LITTLE THINGS • “People have the opportunity to find new treasures at the Farmers’ Market if they love fresh food and being creative with their cooking,” says Goehring. LAUNCH YOUR PRODUCT • Goehring explains how they’ve launched a lot of terrific businesses out of the Farmers’ Market. “We are always seeking new, small culinary businesses that are looking for a place to sell their products to consumers.”

• Some of the local farms you can find at the market include Canyon Creek Mushrooms, Coachella Urban Valley Farm, Chavez Farm, Mondragon Farm, Perris Farm, Blissful Bees, Raul & Family Farm, Spring Hill Farm Cheese and Nest Farm.

AN ARTFUL AFFAIR TAKE A SELF-GUIDED ART TOUR THROUGH THE STREETS OF LA QUINTA Written By: Lynne Eodice and Taylor Gorski

Art is alive and well in La Quinta, and you don’t have to go far to see a wide variety of paintings, sculptures and murals. You can even create a masterpiece of your own! Here are seven things you need to see during your selfguided art tour of the city.

A

1 Connecting Books & Art

• Artist John Cuevas combined art, literature and nature to create “Volta,” a mural that spans two converging outer walls of the La Quinta Public Library. This colorful mural depicts several book titles along with the human brain. “VOLTA” MURAL AT LA QUINTA PUBLIC LIBRARY 78275 Calle Tampico La Quinta, CA 92253 760.564.4767 www.rivlib.net 14 LOCALE MAGAZINE

3 Beauty Is in the Eye of the Beholder • New to the La Quinta neighborhood is a mural called “Bird Song” by Nate Frizzell. Showcasing a desert landscape with colors of a cotton candy sky, this stop next door to the La Quinta Museum is a must-see. “BIRD SONG” MURAL 77885 Avenida Montezuma La Quinta, CA 92253

4 Blossoming in La Quinta

• The “Bloom” mural by artist Nate Frizzell is a great example of hyperrealism in art and features flowers, birds and a woman's face. It’s located at Fred Waring Dr and Adams St and is one of the latest additions to La Quinta’s Art in Public Places program. “BLOOM” MURAL Fred Waring Dr and Adams St La Quinta, CA 92253 760.777.7000 www.playinlaquinta.com

BEAK-A-BOO • Located in the roundabout center on Jefferson and Avenue 52, you’ll find a larger-than-life aluminum roadrunner statue. This sculpture by Don Kennell is 18 feet long and 12 feet high and has been on loan to the city from Goldenvoice since 2015. It was also at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in 2014! ONGOING EYE CANDY • Art is an important part of La Quinta, and the Art in Public Places program keeps its streets, parks and other spaces beautiful with both permanent and temporary installations.

• Located inside the 31,000-square-foot skatepark project is an installation by Justin Coopersmith called “Wheels of Fortune.” Using mixed media, wood, metal and paint, this piece is just another reason to stop by the new X-Park. "WHEELS OF FORTUNE" AT X-PARK 46170 Dune Palms La Quinta, CA 92253

7 Significant Sculpting • Created by artist Marie Barbera, “Desert Legacy” is a bronze sculpture of a Cahuilla mother and child.
