editor's note It’s hard to believe that exactly one year ago I was slurping down a Bloody Mary in my ski boots at the base of Big Bear Mountain. My only predicament at that point in time was one Bloody Mary or two? And then, wham. There is nothing like a worldwide pandemic to make your cocktail consumption worries feel petty. Fast-forward a few months and there we stood (six feet apart)—in the thick of it. Sadly, there is no Pandemic for Dummies book. And while this sh!t storm may have ripped the rug right out from under us, it surely didn’t diminish our sense of unity, creativity and will to create hysterical memes. We know what it feels like to be in it together. The sense of community, from neighborhoods to nations, has been nothing short of extraordinary. I’m proud to say that I work for a company that has fought in the trenches, right beside those who needed it most. We’ve helped local restaurant owners keep their businesses afloat, shop owners keep their doors open and numerous other SoCal businesses who needed a helping hand. We believe that now is the time for generosity.

Within the pages of this issue, you’ll find a foodie guide full of “awardwinning” family-owned restaurants that have worked hard to keep our dining scene alive and well. From the best breakfast in town to datenight destinations to dream about, this guide is an ode to Southern California’s diverse and innovative culinary community. Like most other companies, we had to pivot in 2020. Fredrik Eklund’s LOCALE cover shoot was no exception, where three of our team members attended the photo shoot outdoors, masked up and stayed sixfeet apart. The location, a stunning $38 million home in San Clemente that The Eklund Gomes Team has listed, was an ideal, openair and breezy set for the afternoon ahead. Coastal Cool • Eklund’s presence was felt throughout the whole day. He’s tall, put together, witty and kind. The New Yorker in him merges flawlessly with his new California-cool lifestyle. He cracked jokes in the different shoot locations, shouting from the balcony, “I feel like I’m Romeo on this balcony! I’m starting to feel like I should buy this home.” His fun personality brightened everyone’s mood. Ocean Views • With the entire shoot having to be outside, it couldn’t have worked out better; the property featured panoramic ocean views, a sparkling swimming pool, Mediterranean architecture and a grassy lawn with games. Surfers were riding the waves just below the home, and the sun was shining on everyone. “Even just being outside of the home was breathtaking! You had a sweeping, 360-degree view that left everyone on set in awe,” says production coordinator Lauren Lewellen.

That’s a Wrap • Concluding the shoot, Eklund was all-in to jump onto the floating swan in the pool— all while wearing a suit. It was definitely the highlight of the whole shoot, and Eklund agreed, exclaiming, “This is the best part of the day! Can we do it again tomorrow?”

Real estate mogul Fredrik Eklund is a force to be reckoned with. From being the No. 1 broker in New York to his major real estate expansion in California, it seems there isn’t anything Eklund can’t accomplish—all while still managing to succeed beyond belief. The 43-year-old Bravo TV star, who stars in the entertaining reality show “Million Dollar Listing New York,” made his move from the Big Apple to Los Angeles in July 2019. Since then, he’s been rapidly expanding his real estate business, The Eklund Gomes Team, in the Los Angeles area. This past fall, the team made their way down to Orange County—while it was bound to happen, the business decision came quicker than anticipated. “OC wasn’t in my immediate plans,” Eklund says. However, he received an email from eager real estate agents Seth Nelson and Ariana Gaffoglio; they met the next day at Hotel Bel-Air, and the connection was instantaneous. “I’m very intuitive; we instantly clicked. They felt like family right away,” Eklund explains. The Eklund Gomes Orange County Team was born just days after. “Now I’ve been down to Orange County once a week and selling a lot.” Orange County is, of course, one of the most expensive real estate markets in the country. The $38 million home in San Clemente listed by the team was the location for Eklund’s LOCALE cover shoot. While the home boasts incredible views, stunning architecture and exhibits a charming Mediterranean feel, the 450 linear feet of oceanfront is Eklund’s favorite aspect of the property. “With my help, we are looking to expand more down here [Orange County]. I’ll probably end up living down here one day!” he says. This year, he hopes to be the No. 1 team in Orange County, and they are already well on their way.

So, how did Eklund get to where he is today, selling some of the most sought after real estate in the country? His journey began in New York City. “All I knew was I wanted to be successful in New York. I was very drawn to the energy of New York... reinventing myself and working my ass off. But, I didn’t really have a plan,” Eklund recalls. He moved from his hometown of Stockholm, Sweden to New York City at the age of 25—without knowing anyone. After the move, his new friends in New York suggested he give real estate a shot. With two sides to his personality (one being an analytical and business side and the other being, as Eklund puts it, colorful and eccentric), it seemed that this was an ideal career path for Eklund. “You gotta have both [sides], I think. You have to entertain your clients; you have to make it fun and spread good energy—nobody wants to work with a lazy, angry broker!” Eklund states. He goes on to explain that the task of buying a house is stressful, and it’s his job to make it fun. “So, I got my license, and I was just trying it out. I have to say, I’m lucky in a way because New York—at the time—was very undervalued. It was about to see an incredible explosion in new development, pricing, activity...becoming almost the capital of the world at that time. This was in 2003 and 2004, [so a few years] after Sept. 11, the city was really coming back strong, and I just jumped right into it. I was lucky,” Eklund explains.

But his success isn’t all attributed to just luck. Eklund studied at the Stockholm School of Economics before moving to the US, and he even founded an internet company and worked at an investment bank back in his past life. A few years after his arrival in New York City, he co-founded The Eklund Gomes Team at Douglas Elliman in 2010 with John Gomes, which now has offices in Manhattan, Beverly Hills, Brooklyn, Miami and Laguna Beach. It seems as if he’s always had the grind and grit it takes to prosper. Across the country, from coast to coast, Eklund manages to stay on top. In markets like New York City, Miami Beach and Beverly Hills—where real estate is competitive, lavish and jaw-dropping— Eklund succeeds. He sells luxurious homes to some of the most influential people in the world. “It is difficult, and it can be exhausting because I take it so seriously. I’m super competitive, a perfectionist and a control freak, so for me, why go into a market if you’re not going to basically be No. 1?” Eklund says. He does it right and does it to be the best—not just the best for himself, but the best for his clients across the various markets. Eklund recalls the feeling of being scared when he moved to the States and then having the same feeling when making the cross-country move to California. His advice is to just do it; go after your dream. “Usually, it’s not people who say no to us; it’s our own insecurities and our own, maybe laziness [that’s in our way, which makes us] feel content where we are,”

Eklund says. “I think everyone is walking around with this dream, and you just gotta do it. It’s very difficult and it’s very scary, but in my opinion, it always pays off because if it doesn’t pay off the way that you thought it would, it will pay off in a different way,” Eklund says. In addition to having an astounding career, Eklund is the proud father of threeyear-old twins, Milla and Freddie. While his career and personal life are now in harmony, it took a couple of years for him to get to this point. “It was not easy—I’m not going to sugarcoat it. I’m lucky because I have such a good team at work; [my husband] Derek is amazing; I have nannies—I have an army of assistance. I could never do this without all of those people,” Eklund says. “The kids grow up so fast; they have to take priority over work because work can always be done at a later stage—or in my case, an earlier stage—but the kids, I only have one shot at.” Eklund’s optimistic outlook, larger-thanlife personality and diligence have led him to this prosperous point in life. He’s someone who truly lives life to the fullest, diving into adventure and lighting up a room. “This life is so short; it’s like a blink. I think we’re given a limited period of time to really enjoy ourselves but also to really experience a lot of different emotions and things—and not material things. So, how are you going to do that? How are you going to take advantage and really feel gratitude for the time that you’re given?” Eklund expresses. He’s found his cool California groove and finally feels at home in the Golden State. Only time will tell what the next chapter holds for Fredrik Eklund.

Chef Tangonan previously worked at popular OC spots like The Cannery in Newport Beach and Catal Restaurant in Downtown Disney. But what happens when the tables disappear? Outside-the-box thinking led two local valley entrepreneurs to an inside-the-box solution...literally! Tony Marchese was feeling the effects of the pandemic at his restaurant, Trio, in Palm Springs. “I had to start looking at alternative business models,” he explains. He teamed up with local farmer, Mark Tardos, who was similarly confronted by the drop in demand from restaurants. They came up with CV Harvest Box. “It’s farm-tofront door,” explains Marchese, a service that collects produce from a multitude of local growers, packages them, and ships them out to customers' homes. “Some products are picked on Thursday and delivered on Friday,” adds Marchese. “You can’t get any fresher!” In a global, chain-store economy, we tend to forget the bountiful agriculture that exists in our own backyard. With three growing seasons, the Coachella Valley is blessed with an abundance of fruits, vegetables and dates. “We’re very lucky to have some amazing local products,” adds Marchese. It’s a billion-dollar industry that employs around 12,000 people.

Marchese dubs the program “locally integrated,” elaborating: “eat local, buy local, support local. Everything's about trying to keep the money right here within the valley.” Additionally, it allows consumers to dodge the crowds, delivering a treasure chest of the finest, freshest produce each week. Sample mixes include dates, Indian eggplant, live cilantro, Dino kale, Ruby Red grapefruits, Fuyu persimmons, microgreens, organic pomegranates and strawberries. “We’ve also started adding small businesses to bring a wider variety,” adds Marchese. Ancillary offerings include baked goods, cookies, salsas, sauces and oils as well as prime steaks. Some ingredients are even bundled into complete DIY Moscow mule and Bloody Mary kits.

Every box also comes with a featured recipe, or you can explore a multitude of local chefs on social media that put their own weekly CV Harvest Box deliveries to work. “It’s a fun project, and it just keeps growing,” enthuses Marchese. The Orange County native found his calling in the medical field early on. The son of a surgeon, Dr. Grover always had a passion for science and being able to help people. As an undergrad at UCLA, he served as an EMT, which further sparked his interest in medicine. Dr. Grover considered pursuing cardiac surgery or orthopedic surgery, until he discovered the world of plastic surgery during medical school at the University of California, San Diego. “When I rotated on plastic surgery during my third year, I just found [it] to be really exciting,” says Dr. Grover. “You’re exposed to all aspects of the human body from the face to the toe; men and women; adults and kids; and everything from very technical, highly challenging reconstructive surgeries to all aspects of cosmetic surgery. I’m very particular and type A in my nature, so plastic surgery seemed to be a nice fit.” Dr. Grover completed his residency training in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery at Stanford University before taking an additional fellowship in Aesthetic and Oculoplastic Surgery at Paces Plastic Surgery Center in Atlanta. His extensive training and exposure to different medical situations provided him with valuable skills and learnings that he utilizes today. “Plastic surgery is a blend of technical skills and artistry,” he explains. “Being exposed to

all sorts of reconstructive surgery, you’re able to really open your mind and see how you can create things and solve problems in very challenging situations. That’s why I think it was a really nice transition over to cosmetic surgery.” After his training, Dr. Grover opened a practice in Beverly Hills with another surgeon and gained experience working with celebrity clients and performing rhinoplasty. The doctor and his wife, Nina Grover, Esq., decided to relocate to Orange County to raise their family. He then founded Grover Aesthetics in Newport Beach and has been operating this private practice for the past 21 years. Grover Aesthetics provides a full collection of services for the face, nose, breast and body, including facelifts, liposuction, microneedling and injectables. Houseplant enthusiasm has been steadily on the rise, especially now that people spend more time at home. “Plants make people happy,” says Eliza Blank, founder and CEO of The Sill. Her words are simple yet deeply truthful. Plants provide a connection that many people need right now. The Sill offers a one-stop shop to buy your new green friend, learn how to keep it alive and join a like-minded community. Plants can be ordered online and delivered directly to your door.

“The Sill is not only about home decor or just selling you plants; we’re here to connect people with plants,” Blank says. She believes happiness stems from the relationship that develops from taking care of your houseplants. Growing up, Blank’s mother and grandmother were avid gardeners. She describes plants as the backdrop to her life. Before becoming a houseplant connoisseur herself, Blank was a brand manager in New York City. When she moved from her hometown in Massachusetts, nature’s absence in the concrete 118 LOCALE MAGAZINE

jungle struck Blank physically and emotionally. Without access to garden centers, she had trouble finding knowledgeable people to teach her how to care for her greens. Challenging personal experiences, shopping for plants and seeking a likeminded community planted the seed for The Sill, and a brilliant idea began to grow. Education is an integral element of her business: “Having a relationship with plants can truly be transformational. There’s something about learning a new skill that unlocks the essence of personal growth in someone. It’s a reminder of our capacity to learn new things at any age. Watching a plant grow creates a feedback loop, which I think is critical to why people find such satisfaction in plants.” The Sill hosted several in-store workshops that have gone virtual since the beginning of the pandemic. Each workshop now can host hundreds of people versus the 10-to 12-person capacity in the shop. The classes vary from Humidity 101 and Artificial Lighting to Winter Plant Care and more. Navigating this past year has been both challenging and rewarding for Blank and The

Sill. “Making sure the business stayed healthy and was growing is a huge accomplishment,” she says. Blank stays motivated by pushing boundaries and pushing herself. She’s most proud of being an inspiration to young women who have followed her journey and aspire to become entrepreneurs. “As I’ve gotten past challenges and hurdles of growing this business, I’m interested in how far I can go. Not for personal gain, but to break barriers and be a role model,” Blank states.

Expectation’s harsh grasp on our future often beckons us towards our non-existent crystal ball, inadvertently impacting our ability to fully focus on growth in the present. Taking advantage of the now while embracing the unknowns of the future is the mantra of India-raised artist Hemali Vadalia, whose creative journey required a huge leap of faith and the ultimate stray from tradition. Entering the workforce as a computer programmer, Vadalia’s feelings of unfulfillment prompted her to leave her job and open up to the possibility of the safer traditional route—marriage and a family. Shortly after, she realized her true passion lay in the world of storytelling, art and creation—a career which would go completely against her culture’s tradition. “Education is very important in Indian families; however, art is still not accepted as ‘real’ education,” she explains. Regardless, a passionate Vadalia received her master’s

After her formal art education, a multitalented Vadalia hoped to intertwine her love of animation and painting, but she wasn’t entirely sure where to start. As if it was meant to be, she stumbled upon an invitation for artists to work on what would become the first-ever feature-length animated painted film. After an intensive training and testing process, Vadalia was selected to work alongside a team of artists in Gdańsk, Poland, to paint and animate for the 2016 Oscarnominated film “Loving Vincent”. With each second of the film being comprised of 12 frames, Vadalia composed and animated seven whole shots, completing a grand total of 358 unique paintings for the nowbeloved film.

Vadalia’s creative journey stands as a true testament to the rewarding nature of staying true to your passions, which can oftentimes require endless patience, faith and perseverance. “Sometimes it’s difficult to find motivation when you’re just looking at your progress from last week to this week. But when you look at it from two years before and now, you want to keep working at it,” she says. Peering into her crystal ball, Vadalia confidently shares that she’s in no rush to figure out her ultimate end goal. “I am still working towards it. I want to learn to articulate and organize thoughts and express myself. Life happens so quickly that we miss taking note of the little things, and it is often in those small things that happiness lies. I am trying to be more attentive to those moments and paint them.”

Dr. Dell’Acqua has been working in cosmetic dentistry for 25 years, and during that time, the good doctor has made it her business to make her patients feel comfortable and relaxed. Fast forward and you’ll find Ott in Chicago running Chrome City—her own creative agency—and Keller working as a chef in restaurants around the world and on multi-million dollar yachts. Turns out, these two know how to hustle. Despite their success stories, a few years ago, Ott decided to leave her fast-paced life in Chicago behind, moving back to her old San Diego stomping grounds. When she got there, however, she felt a sense of disconnection. “I had been gone for seven years, and when I got back, I didn’t know how to connect with the city,” says Ott. things up and give people the opportunity to connect, the duo decided to tap into an untouched territory in San Diego: experimental pop-up dinners. Enter The Blank Table—a bi-monthly dining platform designed to transform the San Diego cultural experience. “People are craving real connections more than ever, so we set out to provide a setting where people from all different walks of life can sit down, converse and share ideas face to face,” says Ott. But The Blank Table is far from any Monday-morning meeting. With the accomplished Chef Keller behind the menu, expert mixologist Sean O’Connell behind the bar and designer Katie Jayne Sprenkle setting a table that’ll take your breath away, each event elicits a magical mood. “It’s a full sensory experience,” she says. “It’s not just about the food; there is always music and a theme.” While Ott plays hostess, Chef Keller and mixologist O’Connell work behind the scenes, crafting cocktails, pairing flavors and perfecting the presentation.

and oysters topped with grilled pineapple chutney and moved onto decadent dishes featuring tuna carpaccio, seared scallops and yellowtail, finishing the evening with a serving of sweet buttermilk panna cotta. Since the first event in June 2019, The Blank Table has hosted at a variety of different venues across San Diego, including a former skatepark-turned-art studio, a private dock on Harbor Island and a family-owned nursery in Mission Hills. When the pandemic hit, however, the crafty team of four shifted their MO to fit the current climate, using their talents to curate private dinners for those who crave connection during a disconnected time. In other words, instead of hosting, The Blank Table comes to you!

“I love the element of surprise,” says Ott. So to keep things interesting, the team decided to not release the location of each event until the morning of. Oh yeah, and nobody knows who’s coming. That’s right—strangers dining with strangers at a secret location. Sounds odd right? Well, that’s the point. The Blank Table offers guests a chance to step out of their comfort zone and sit next to someone that is making San Diego tick.

“It’s about [the person hosting] now,” says Ott. I talk to the client, try to understand their vibe and do a lot of research on who the dinner is for.” For example, for our last client, I found out she had traveled the world, so we did different cocktails and flavors from the countries she had visited. I am really into researching the person and making it feel like everything is unique to them.” Clients can choose between four pricing options with the choice to add beverage pairings and floral and decor design. “It’s a great way to spoil people,” says Ott. “Fred’s food is dynamite, and the amount of work that Sean does to match the food with the flavors of the cocktails is magic. They go all out.”

The first dinner took place in Pacific Beach at a secluded garden space called Yard & Sea, and it was an immediate sellout. “We had guests enter through an alley. People were like, ‘Where am I?’ Then they walked into this beautiful, decked-out space,” explains Ott. The menu featured an amuse followed by three carefully curated courses and dessert. The gift box, ornate and festive, and packed with toys for a girl her age, was from Project Giving Light, a nonprofit organization. Founded in 2017 by husband and wife Harry and Kim Bagramian, Project Giving Light delivers memorable birthday parties and gifts to homeless and unstably housed children across Orange County and beyond.

Kind Hearts • Not only does Project Giving Light host memorable birthday parties for homeless children, but they also organize drives for food, clothing, school supplies and backpacks.

Initially made up of the Bagramians and their two young children, Project Giving Light had small, humble beginnings. The idea was born after the couple spent time helping children deemed homeless by the county at Skyview Elementary. “I felt like these children were not being celebrated,” Harry Bagramian explains, noting the obvious difficulties of their life circumstances. “For some reason, it just hit us. We, too, had children who were young, and I said, ‘I think these kids need to be celebrated on their birthdays.’”

Over the last four years, Project Giving Light has celebrated over 1,500 kids on their birthdays. Their most formidable endeavor over the last eight months has been their new birthday box program, which permits volunteers to fill decorated, corrugated boxes with items for boys and girls of varying age ranges. Once filled, volunteers can send them directly to Project Giving Light, and their team will deliver to one of their many locations all across California. While the efforts of many non-profits have been at a standstill during the pandemic, Project Giving Light has defied all odds by expanding, providing desperately needed PPE (personal protective equipment) like N95 masks and sterilized gloves to Orange County hospitals as well as establishing a monthly grocery store gift card program to help over 100 local families. “We’ve been trying to be adaptable, agile and as helpful as we can to local families during these difficult times,” Bagramian explains. With the help of their biggest partner, the Orange County Foster Care Agency, Project Giving Light was successful in giving 200 birthday boxes to children in August of 2020 alone. “We’ve heard such great feedback from some of the social workers. It really gives you perspective on what these kids are dealing with on a daily, weekly or yearly basis,” Bagramian adds. To address the rife and pressing issues of poverty, Project Giving Light has extended their outreach to the city of Los Angeles. They’ve partnered with Union 160 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Shine Bright • Every part of Project Giving Light is imbued with meaning, including their name. The “light” in Project Giving Light stands for “love, integrity, grace, hope and truth.”

Rescue Mission, Hannah’s Children’s Home, and have taken their services up north, working with San Francisco City Impact, where they sent 150 more birthday boxes in the month of December. Thus far, a key to their success has been consistency. “In our experience, consistency breeds authenticity,” he says. Following the same ethos, Project Giving Light aims to give these kids a consistent, loving experience on their birthday, and the only way to make that a reality is through the consistent donations and volunteer hours of others. “We want 2021 to be a year of explosive growth,” Bagramian explains. “Our goal is to give 7,500 boxes by the year’s end, but there is no reason why it can’t be 20,000 and we can’t get boxes sent all over the country.” According to Bagramian, donors and volunteers contribute not only to giving these underprivileged children hope and happiness today, but also to creating enduring memories for them in their future. “No matter our circumstances, all of us can look back on the good and the bad things that have happened to us, but when someone or something impacts you in a meaningful and significant way, that changes you and makes you feel loved. Orange County Pure Barre Owner Monica Grubin owns five studios in the area: Huntington Beach, Irvine, Mission Viejo, Costa Mesa and Newport Beach, which has been Grubin’s original studio for 12 years. “Before Pure Barre, I worked in Orthopedic Surgery and was attending Physician Assistant School,” says Grubin, “but once I found the Pure Barre Technique, I realized this workout was what the fitness space was lacking and could solve orthopedic problems before they needed surgical intervention.”

The studios offer three different classes, not levels. “I think that is my favorite aspect of Pure Barre; it is literally for anyone,” explains Grubin. Members of all different experiences will be in one class together. “We don’t have levels, as you can really go at your own pace,” she explains. “If you need to take a break, take a break. You focus on your own body and movements.”

The three classes offered are: Classic, a full body workout with a series of low-impact, high-intensity movements; Pure Empower, more cardio and interval training; and Pure Reform, resistance-based training, targeting major muscle groups. “I honestly don’t have a favorite class,” says Grubin. “It just depends on the day. Women tend to feel different every day according to our cycles. The three classes are a good mix of all workouts.” As for this past year, it’s no secret that fitness centers have had to change how business is run. “We’ve gone virtual, with virtual class offerings. We have new regulations in place— as many fitness centers do—like temperature checks, distancing and sanitation procedures,” explains Grubin, ”but we also have a CASPR air filter, so all air being pumped into the studio has been purified.” The studios are also able to control their exposure, as locations are only about 1,000 square feet. Plus, class sizes are small and must be registered for, so the studio is able to know who attended which class. “We are able to keep it safe,” assures Grubin.

Invest in Yourself • Classes, training programs or other educational opportunities can be very valuable. You can improve upon, or add to, your set of skills. This can make you more productive, a more valuable asset in the workplace and can also help you feel better about yourself. Invest in the Markets • “Anyone can do this,” says Kuhn. “There are all sorts of platforms, such as Schwab, Fidelity, Betterment and Vanguard. Any of these allow you to invest in the equity markets or the bond markets, even if you only have a thousand dollars.”
