MALIBU - In a game that defines a rivalry, the 159th match-up between LMU and Pepperdine had 12 lead changes, 12 ties, a historical moment and a late run by Pepperdine, which was the difference, giving them an 80-69 win in West Coast Conference at Firestone Fieldhouse. Senior Anthony Ireland would lead all scorers with 24 points, and with 15 in the first half he became the fifth Lion in school history to reach 2,000 points in his career. Freshman Gabe Levin added 16 points and eight rebounds while fellow freshman Evan Payne had 13 for the Lions (11-12, 3-8). For the Waves (1310, 6-5), they featured a balanced attack five players in double figures, including Malcolm Brooks with 16 and Jett Raines with 15. Down the stretch, the Waves outscored LMU 16-3 in the final seven minutes of the game, including a 9-0 run in the final 2:52 to pull away in a back-and-forth affair. The Lions took a 66-64 lead with 7:02 to play on a Payne lay-in, but they would get just one more field goal the rest of the way. The Lions would shoot just 1-for-7 from the field in the final seven minutes and would finish hitting just 37 percent from the field in the second half. They would finish 41.5 percent for the game while Pepperdine hit 45 percent.

WELLS FARGO PCH CUP This will be the 160th all-time meeting between LMU and Pepperdine. The two longtime crosstown adversaries have come together in an effort to boost their decades-long rivalry with the creation of the Wells Fargo PCH Cup. The series is an annual scorecard for the NCAA-sponsored athletic contests between the Lions and Wave. Wells Fargo began sponsoring the PCH Cup prior to the 2011-12 competition. LMU and Pepperdine are represented by 12 of their intercollegiate athletic teams through both regular and postseason competitions over the course of the academic calendar. Points are awarded for successes in the head-to-head match-ups and the university with the highest point total accumulated throughout the year will be named PCH Cup champion and awarded the PCH Cup. For more visit LMULions.com//trads/PCH-Cup.html one of the best in the WCC in getting And-1 opportunities. Freshman Evan Payne is tied for the league lead with Saint Mary’s Brad Waldow in completing 13 And-1 chances (basket and made free throw). Anthony Ireland is fourth on that list with 11. As a team, the Lions have hit 41 heading into the weekend. • While Ireland has been a mainstay in the Lions’ line-up the last four seasons, playing shorthanded is nothing new for the Lions in the six seasons under Head Coach Max Good. The Lions enter the Pepperdine game with just seven scholarship players. Junior Chase Flint, who had played in 42 games as a Lion with 24 starts, suffered a broken elbow against Portland on Jan. 16 and will be out the rest of the season. He is the third former starter to be lost for the season in 2013-14 due to injury. Combined with freshman Patson Siame’s year of residency, the Lions will play this weekend with just seven scholarship players. • Entering the Pepperdine game, key players have missed 56 games this season due to injury, including Flint’s eight games, Godwin Okonji (leg suffered in car accident prior to practice on Oct. 20, see LMULions.com for more) for the entire season (27 games) and senior Ayodeji Egbeyemi (hip) the last 19 games. The two seniors will look to apply for a medical redshirt and the end of the season. Freshman Gabe Levin also missed two games with a shoulder injury. Freshman Nino Jackson, who has been out after a severe ankle sprain prior to the game against UC Riverside on Dec. 2, has withdrawn from the University and is no longer with the program due to personal reasons. Sophomore transfer Ben Dickinson missed the game on Jan. 18 against Gonzaga and also remains out indefinitely for personal reasons. The Lions have had nine starting line-ups this year, second only to Good’s first season in 2008-09 for fewest line-ups. A year ago the Lions had 10 different starting line-ups as key players missed 30 games. In 2011-12 when they won 21 games, the Lions featured 11 starting line-ups but had key players miss just 25 games, the fewest in Good’s tenure. In 2010-11 they had 15 line-ups with players missing 63 games. In 2009-10 in which the Lions had 18 wins, they had 10 line-ups with the second fewest missed games, 26. And in his first season, the Lions were down to six scholarship players at one point and key players missed 68 games.
