Concept

CONNECT & COLLABORATE The brief was to create a yearbook for Art and Design Interdisciplinary. With their input, the concept of ‘Coordinates’ was created and translated into a visual product by myself, Suzanne, Mike and Greta as well as a their graphic design team.

Coordinates is a publication that not only celebrates each student’s individual work: it celebrates and promotes the connections that have been made throughout the course on the last three years.

Research

For several reasons, which included budgetary restrictions and the fact that the course is so eclectic and unique, our research focussed on unusual formats and lofi finishes which would reflect the diversity and work of the students.

Research into unique formats included zines, presentation packs and use of posters as a means of presenting the work.

Research

Although the overall design is more ‘lofi’, we thought it would be interesting to balance this with a more high art style of typography. We researched into publications that were similar in content such as art and design books and magazines to inform our typographic choices. Elizabeth Tyrer

As our concept was based on ‘Coordinates’ we needed a way to translate this visually. We wanted a way to show them all as individuals inside a larger community, and so we came up with a grid system within which they could stand as separate designers, and then be

connected to each other through hand drawn lines. We used their initials as the coordinates, keeping this running through the whole book as it adds a level of consistency we felt was needed with such a diverse course. The hand drawn lines were used to keep the look lofi.

The Design

We wanted the layouts for the yearbook to be fluid, as everyone on the course is so different and they felt like a very formal structure would not represent them accurately. We carried through the coordinates to stand next to the names in a separate margin to add

visual interest as well as to ensure the concept makes sense throughout. There are two to three images on each page, and we tried to create a system that allowed for sufficient space between each image.

The Design

Designed to fit in with our budget constraints as well as create a more unique and interesting format for the students, we created a book that is formed from 8 A2 posters which, when folded and bound make a 32 page A4 book.

The posters inside act as a bonus for viewers and a keepsake for the students, and include work from a Coordinates workshop run by us. The actual publication is made up of student work, course quotes and images of the studio and the students in process.
