Concept

NO CHARACTER LIMITS. Myself and Hannah completed this brief as part of the Print and Paste poster project, in which you can submit artwork that will feature on a 16 board poster space in Manchester. The subject of the poster should be thought provoking as well as providing a positive

social commentary. We decided to create the poster based on promoting the practice of letter writing instead of using social media. We created and illustrated the copy to play on the definition of characters, making reference to the character limit on Twitter.

Research

As we wanted to aim this at a younger audience, we looked into using hand rendered type and illustration, as well the use of colour displayed in large scale wall murals that catch the eyes of passers-by. We liked the quality of variety that we found in our research, as

we found that this related well to our concept and the idea that there are so many different people in the world. We also felt that the more informal illustrative type worked well as this would appeal more to younger people as well as being more visually playful.

The Development and Design

We created an alphabet of hand rendered type, each creating 13 of the letters and then choosing the best to use. We used pen and pencil to create a more informal alphabet that references hand written letters. Each letter is different to communicate diversity.

Bold vibrant colours have been chosen to attract the attention of people walking past the poster. The colours will also appeal to our target audience of younger people.
