Studio Brief Title: Brief 8: Penguin Design Award Synopsis: The competition brief was set by Penguin to redesign the cover of Jonathon Coe’s classic novel ‘What A Carve Up’. I decided to communicate the idea that each of the characters, the influential Winshaw family, ends up digging their own grave, creating a darkly humorous cover that references Private Eye, a publication that would satirise their downfall. Mocked up book cover design. Final Boards

I will blog this under the module codes ‘OUGD603’, ‘OUGD603: Design Practice’, ‘Brief 8: Penguin Adult’s Prize’ and ‘Brief 8: Context’. I will produce a book cover design that will be mocked up.

Evaluation: I really enjoyed completing the Penguin Design Award book cover, as I really loved the book and felt that it was an exciting challenge to try and communicate the themes of the novel within such a restricted space. It allowed me to think more critically about my concepts and to develop and refine the idea more than I normally would. I feel that the strength is in the idea more so than the execution of the design: I have tried to make it obviously similar to Private Eye as I felt that this would appeal to the audience effectively, as Private Eye also satirises the Conservative Party and influential families similar to the Winshaws. If I had had more time, I would have liked to actually print the cover so that I could have produced more professional images, and I would have also maybe tried to use my own photography for the grave digging image as I would have had more control over the visuals.
