Student Name: Elizabeth Tyrer

Studio Brief Title: Brief 7: Puffin Design Award Synopsis: The competition brief was set by Penguin to redesign the cover of S.E Hinton’s classic young adult novel ‘The Outsiders’. I decided to produce an illustrative cover design that references the themes of rivalry and violence that are central to the novel, using gold foiling to reference the iconic line ‘Stay Gold Ponyboy’. The cover uses hand rendered type and illustration to appeal to its target audience of young adults. List of deliverables

One mocked up book cover design. Final Boards.

I will blog this under the module codes ‘OUGD603’, ‘OUGD603: Design Practice’, ‘Brief 7: Penguin Children’s Prize’ and ‘Brief 7: Context’. I will produce a book cover design that will be mocked up.

Evaluation: The Puffin Design Award brief was one of the first book cover designs I did this year, and I felt that it was an important brief because it gave me the confidence to believe in my abilities within publishing design. It also allowed me to explore the use of hand rendered type and illustration, something that I had not really used in my graphic design briefs in the first and second year. I feel that the strength is in the illustrations and composition of the book cover, which I tried to make feel more dynamic and interesting to appeal to the younger book readers who would be drawn to the visuals. I feel that the back of the cover is quite weak visually, as I struggled to find a typeface that worked with the illustrations, and I also didn’t allow myself as much time to complete the back cover. I stayed relatively organised with this brief, but if I were to do it again I might allow myself more time to design and plan the cover, and less time to complete it digitally. I would also try and print the cover out as opposed to mocking it up, although this was not possible at the time because of the money it would cost to print and foil the cover professionally.
