Making Our Seniors Matter Brampton The Gift of Estate Planning

December 2015

By: Kate M. Saldanha

As the holiday season approaches, we often think about our loved ones and giving back. By making an estate plan and organizing your affairs, you can give your loved ones a final gift by making it as easy as possible for your Executor to administer your estate after your death. Having a Will in place ensures that legal authority to do things on your behalf flows as smoothly as possible to your Executor who will be in charge of your estate. You can help your Executor by keeping information about your money, Investments, insurance, property, and debt in one place and telling your Executor where to find that information. Your Executor will need a lot of information about you; having all of this information in one place makes the Executor’s job easier. It is often a difficult and emotional time when a loved one has passed away but nevertheless an Executor must start making decisions and acting on behalf of the estate right away. Creating a well thought out estate plan, giving clear instructions in a properly drafted Will, and organizing information about your assets in a location you share with the Executor is a wonderful final gift to your Executor and loved ones.

Comments from City Council Representatives at Senior Council meeting November 3, 2015 City Councillor Jeff Bowman Thank you to everyone who organized the 10th Anniversary of Flower City Seniors Centre. It was a great event. LRT Vote- long night. The meeting ended at 2:00am. It will now stop at Steeles until we work on other arrangements. We are also looking at the go train schedule as many of you are aware it stops at a certain time during the evening. It’s hard coming home if you plan on staying late. There seems to be a lot of misconceptions from residents regarding the 7% increase that Councillors approved. Although Councillors unanimously voted to do away with the 1/3 tax free it still had to be reviewed by a citizen’s base group. This group did benchmarking with other Municipalities and modelled what Mississauga (based on population size) was currently doing. They would raise their gross salary by $6000-same as Mississauga from $78,713 to $84,495. Even with the increase our take home pay is actually about $8,400 less than it is now. The car allowance is $14,927 yearly $4500 less than Mississauga As Councillors we are putting in 70 hours week attending many evening and weekend events

City Councillor Pat Fortini Car allowance: We do not need a City car. We should just have one available and use it when needed. Can be shared District 19, Brampton Senior Games Winter Registrations

City Councillor Doug Whillans Will meet with transit to look at the frequency of busses coming into Flower City-currently at times they are coming in 1 hr. instead of every ½ hr. Only 9% use public transit Presto card- would be easier for seniors to use -will investigate Intersection crossing-need to take a look at when the lights change as sometimes they change too quickly for seniors to cross the road Update re: Peel Memorial Hospital: Moving along well. It will be a senior’s rehabilitation and wellness centre. Assist with outreach programs, memory clinic, independent living. The facility will be totally accessible. Projecting the first year 16,000.
