SUPERLAMBANANAS Sculpture raises the baa

ICONIC: Superlambanana is lowered into place by crane into its current home on Tithebarn Street THE super stampede of Superlambananas has captured the imagination of thousands of people and become one of the undoubted highlights of Capital of Culture.

Originally commissioned by the Liverpool Culture Company, Go Superlambananas is the most ambitious and all-inclusive public art event being held in the UK this year. It has brought colour to even the dullest summer day, bringing the streets alive with more than 100 miniicons appearing on roundabouts, street corners and even inside landmarks such as Liverpool Town Hall and St George’s Hall. Go Superlambananas was the

By CATHERINE JONES Culture Reporter brainchild of Wild in Art. The group’s director Sally Ann Wilkinson says she is astounded by the reaction to the “lambies”. She added: “Not only are thousands of people enjoying visiting the trail, thousands more are sharing and viewing their footage and pictures of the Superlambananas on the likes of Facebook, YouTube and Flickr. “The feedback we’ve received so far has been incredibly positive, with many people ‘bagging’ each and every one. Only in Liverpool could this type of event be received with such affec-

tion and support from the public. “We hope Go Superlambananas will be remembered as the event everyone took part in, in some way, during the Capital of Culture year.” Some of the Superlambananas are beautiful, others thought-provoking, but all have an infectious sense of fun. The scale of the event is unprecedented with 80 sponsors, 30 community groups, 20 schools, 110 artists, 400 litres of paint, 100 litres of varnish and 30,000 mosaic tiles just a few of the incredible statistics. The finishing touches to the herd were completed at the Matchworks factory, which was where the original SuperLambBanana was created 10 years ago. The inclusion and particip-

ation of the community has been an integral part of the Capital of Culture programme. Culture Company creative director Phil Redmond said: ‘’Go Superlambanas perfectly embodies the spirit of what Liverpool 08 is all about – to take part and to support culture. “The enthusiasm and imagination of the city shines through this project and I’d encourage everyone to get and see these amazing creations.’’ Trail maps have been snapped up from travel centres, tourist information centres, libraries, museums, galleries, and the 08 Place. ● Details of all the latest developments can be found at www.gosuperlambananas.co.uk.

THE original Superlambanana started out as a four-inch model by Manhattan-based Japanese artist Taro Chiezo. Local artist Andy Small recreated it on a scale of 1:50 after being commissioned for the Art Transpennine Exhibition of 1998, by current Liverpool Biennial director Lewis Biggs, to celebrate the reopening of the Tate Liverpool. It was created to warn of the dangers of genetically-modified food, while also reflecting Liverpool’s unique sense of humour during a time of regeneration in the city. Superlambanana is 17ft long, weighs 7.5 tons, is made of concrete and steel, and cost £35,000 to build. The statue was originally sited in Williamson Square but has moved to a number of other locations as far away as Spike Island in Widnes. It can currently be found on the corner of Tithebarn Street and Vauxhall Road. It has also been a number of different colours, other than its famous yellow, including green, pink and purple to raise awareness for various campaigns.
