We are already noticing the seasons changing as the days get shorter, and the leaves start to turn, and we hope you are getting your little ones back into their routine after the long summer break. Maybe they’re starting a new school year, or it’s their first time at nursery, or they are excited to be back to their favourite pre-school classes. Autumn is a special time for families with Halloween and Bonfire Night to look forward to, and it’s a good time to get out and about with conkers to collect and damsons to pick. Our Days Out and Events section is full of things to do in half term, Halloween happenings and local bonfire events. If you’ve been watching the lovely drama “Our Zoo” you’ll enjoy Kate Nield’s account of her trip to Chester Zoo, John Freeman gives A Dad’s Eye View on how being a parent has changed his attitude to Halloween and Nicola Foster will make you laugh out loud with her honest appraisal of “advice” on parenting. As the nights draw in this is the perfect time of year to curl up with a book and Sue Steel has some great recommendations for you and your little ones in our Book Corner, Nikki Geddes of Kiddy Cook extols the virtues of Slow Cooking and we explain the meaning of Halloween. This issue has all our usual sections, The Baby and Toddler Diary has had its annual overhaul and is full of things to do with your little ones. Book Corner

Autumn Reads By Sue Steel

Hello again from simply books! We’re celebrating our 12th birthday at Simply Books this month and I’ve been trying to decide on my favourite twelve books which is an impossible task! However, one thing I know for sure is that as far as children’s books go my favourite kind of books are picture books. So this time I thought I’d tell you about three stories I’m really enjoying at the moment. They all read out loud really well and will be particularly enjoyed by children whose sense of humour is becoming a little more sophisticated! It’s a while since we’ve had a new picture book from Lauren Child (Charlie & Lola) so ‘The New Small Person’ is a real treat! Elmore Green started off life as an only child but then one day everything changed..... This story of a new arrival and that feeling of no longer being the littlest and cutest has all the hallmarks of a classic Lauren Child story. Quirky, imaginative, witty and stylish - and of course served up with her trademark illustration. Even if there isn’t a new addition to the family it’s still a great picture book about sibling rivalry to share with your children. David Walliams has an uncanny knack of knowing how to make us all laugh out loud and his first picture book ‘The Slightly Annoying Elephant’ is now in paperback with a CD - wonderfully read by the author himself and brought to life by Tony Ross’ genius illustrations. When an elephant knocks on Sam’s door he’s taken completely by surprise and hadn’t realised filling the ‘adoption’ form at the zoo meant the elephant would turn up on his doorstep. Hilarity ensures with this rather pompous and bad tempered guest and the final straw is when all his friends arrive too! So the moral of the story? Always read the small print! ‘Use Your Imagination’ by Nicola O’Byrne is an inventive story about how a very imaginative rabbit outwits a wolf and becomes the hero of his own adventure. A mixture of fairy-tale peril and playful humour, this story will have children laughing while they’re on the edge of their seat and fortunately doesn’t end in rabbit stew! And finally, I’m sure many of you, like me, loved ‘One Day’ and I’m so excited about David Nicholls brand new book ‘Us’. It’s a bittersweet comedy about the demands of parenthood and living together. Fingers crossed, David will be making a return visit to Simply Books so buy a copy from us and we’ll make sure you get a complimentary event ticket if he comes! At Simply Books we have a valet parking service, activity tables to keep the children entertained and a café too. You can be sure of a very warm welcome and once you’ve stepped through our door we hope you’ll want to visit time and time again! Sue

The Ups and Downs of Parenting

A Recent Report By Nicola Foster The other evening I plonked myself down with my large glass of wine and began flicking through the Sunday papers. I soon came across an article reporting on another way in which we (the children’s father and I) and the rest of the nation’s parents are causing irreparable harm to our children through parenting skills (or lack of). Barely a week seems to pass without an expert opinion voicing their concerns about the risks posed to children from (amongst other things) not reading enough, going to bed too late, doing too many activities, doing too few activities, having too much sugar and having to put up with parents who drink too much wine. These reports, whilst not without merit, are often contradictory and littered with the sort of emotionally charged phrases (such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, tooth decay and young minds decomposing before our very eyes by overuse of the internet), which send most parents reaching for the wine. In short we are doing it all wrong. I doubt there has ever been a time where so much information and instruction is available on how to bring up children and it is very easy to get sucked in, often at the expense of common sense. With child number 1, we operated a ‘strictly by the book’ policy. This was entirely due to the fact that the children’s father and I had not the faintest clue about what we were doing. For example; the ‘book’ said it was best to wipe the newborns bottom with cotton wool and water. So we did. Looking back this was a rookie error. We were confronted with explosions of tar like substance which appeared to contain the same setting qualities as Weetabix (something I have often thought would be a very cost effective solution to the Country’s pot-hole problem). We didn’t need cotton wool and water we needed a SWAT team. She was churning out more of the stuff before we had finished cleaning up the last lot. Children 2 & 3 fared slightly better and suffered fewer indignities, mainly due to the discovery that there is nothing a baby wipe cannot remove. I have yet to read a report which looks at the impact on parents of being bombarded by so much ‘advice’. I am no expert but I am fairly confident that it would contain the revelation that somebody has finally discovered a link between the “everyone’s an expert” life we lead now and the advent of catch phrases such as “wine o’clock” and, in my case: “we’ve run out of Ned”. I think if I tried to follow every piece of parenting advice I have read recently, there would be no time to sleep which contravenes current thinking on recommended sleep levels. I don’t really need a report to tell me the children spend too much time in front of the TV or on a screen – I can see that for myself when I have to turn the wifi off just to get everyone to the dinner table. I did try and make a stand against this on a recent family day out and, in an unspeakable act of barbarism, I banned all devices for a day with the particular notion that we talk to each other, like a proper family. This was very quickly modified to “if you can’t think of anything nice to say, just look out of the window”. I wouldn’t say the day was a complete success, but if nothing else they actually saw where we were going for a change instead of just looking up from their devices when we arrive. Sometimes it is simply a matter of finding the right piece of advice to fit you circumstances. In my case, I will follow the example of a tongue –in-cheek quote I saw on the internet; “I read somewhere that drinking is bad for you. So I decided to stop reading!”

A Dad’s Eye View

A Dad’s Eye View On: Halloween By John Freeman I’ll admit – I used to be one of those people. Every October 31st, during the hours of early evening, I would decamp to a back room leaving my house in total darkness. I wanted to give the impression of not being at home and would not – under any circumstances – answer any knock on my front door. I was waging a one-man war against trick-or-treating. I had become a Mr Scrooge of Halloween. This was before I had children of my own and I used to spend the evening quietly (so as to stay covertly hidden) raging against the constant stream of happy cherubs dressed up as cute vampires, skeletons or - more sinisterly - zombies demanding an endless supply of chocolate and sweets. Perhaps even more annoyingly, when the little ones had departed to their beds, was the irksome bunch of bored teenagers in Scream-style masks requesting cold, hard cash. To my miserable mind this seemed tantamount to door-to-door begging. Plus, Halloween was too close to Bonfire Night - which is just bad planning. Then two things happened to soften my view. Firstly, I was lucky enough to spend a Halloween in America. And while I am not suggesting Halloween is an American invention (its roots lie in Celtic Christian festivals), I certainly began to get a sense of the fun, pleasure and sense of community that infuses Halloween across the pond. There was genuine excitement throughout the day as families gathered to play games, dress up and exchange spooky stories. It all seemed rather enjoyable. Secondly, I had some children of my own. As they began to experience stories in books and films, I realised that fantastical characters – even as outlandish as vampires, monsters and zombies – were an important and colourful aspect of the tales they enjoyed. And then, eventually, when my son was five or six years old, the inevitable happened – I took him out trick-or-treating. The hunted had become the hunter. I shepherded him and a couple of his mates (resplendent in matching Darth Vader costumes) around our street, calling in on neighbours that had pre-agreed stashes of teeth-rotting goodies. I hadn’t actually discussed with the children what would happen if a particular house didn’t have any treats and needed to be tricked, although five minutes in the presence of a trio of six-year-old boys enjoying an early evening sugar rush would probably suffice as punishment. However, as we passed from house to house, I began to scan homes for tell-tale signs – a full quota of cars on the drive, not a single light source emanating from the house. I would get the children to knock extra loudly on the door and then we waited. And waited.

Mums in Business BizMums is a social enterprise established in November 2012 to offer support and inspiration to self-employed mums through networking events where they can get together to make new business contacts and get support and encouragement in their business ventures. It all began with just one event, Shrewsbury, and now the network has gone from strength to strength hosting over 23 events every month across the Midlands and North of England. All events are held in child-friendly locations so mums can bring their children along too. For those not able to attend regular meetings a Facebook members group has been created to motivate and support each other online. Founder Michelle Child explains “Being a mum in business can, at times be very isolating and we recognised the need for support and being part of a community. Community is very much the focus of BizMums, and this can lead to great friendships being made and members being given an opportunity to learn and grow their businesses”. The Giraffes, The Meerkats and Us

By Kate Nield

All three year olds have an obsession or two and my three year old is obsessed with Giraffes. For this reason we always try to make at least an annual visit to Chester Zoo and this year we were able to combine our visit with Henry’s cousin Stanley’s second birthday. When we arrived first stop was to buy our tickets and although it was busy there were plenty of staff around to help and assist us in getting into the zoo. Tickets are £22.00 for adults and £18.00 for children (3-15 years) with children under 3 being free. Although this is not a cheap day out I really think it is value for money as you can literally spend the whole day there. We started our visit by heading towards the Rhinos and the rest of the paddock animals. When visiting the Rhinos don’t miss the Meerkats who are just around the corner and were certainly Stanley’s favourites as they are probably the only animals who are cheekier than him. Once you have been around the paddock animals you will reach the bat cave which I have been told is great fun although I can’t comment as I wasn’t brave enough to go in! Expecting the Zoo to be busy we had come prepared with a picnic. There are plenty of picnic areas all across the Zoo and I would recommend that you leave the picnic in the car and get a pass out to collect it when you are ready. If alfresco dining is not for you, or the weather won’t allow it, there are a number of other options again located across the zoo from June’s Pavilion, which is the main family restaurant, to the Bembe Kitchen and BBQ. Once we had finished eating it was animal after animal for Henry and Stanley as we saw Monkeys, Cheetahs, Lions and Tigers. We then visited the Penguin pool where we had lots of fun watching the penguins swimming under the water from the viewing area. After that it was on to the Realm of the Red Ape to see the amazing Orangutans (my personal favourites!) followed by a play on the park and then a visit to the Chimpanzees. Then it was Henry’s highlight of the day the Giraffes. Over at the Giraffes you can see them walk through the paddock and, if you’re lucky, you can get even closer inside where the Giraffes may be having a bite to eat. We also have a family tradition of measuring Henry and Stanley against the Giraffe picture outside the enclosure. Of course there are many more animals to see and some wonderful interactive exhibits. There is also a full programme of animal talks and activities. The main reason we go again and again is because there is something new to see every time you visit. So if you haven’t been to Chester Zoo we would certainly recommend it and I’m sure you will soon be as hooked as we are.

Days Out and Events

A busy half term at Tatton There really is plenty going on at Tatton Park this autumn. Over half term you could try ghost hunting in the gardens but be prepared to be (slightly) scared as you track them down. There will be spooky story telling in the eerie Tower garden at weekends and a visit to the Gardens at this time of year isn’t complete without the gardener’s amazing annual display of autumn vegetables. Why not don your deerstalker, pick up your magnifying glass and solve the case of the missing Mansion treasure. Follow a trail of clues, sharpening your detective skills as you go, but be wary of dead ends and some surprises along the way! There will be a fun family quiz throughout the week. Over Halloween why not take family and friends, be brave and visit the Horrendously Haunted Old Hall where you will meet their spirits and spectres, are the ghosts fiendishly friendly or terrifyingly terrible? Though be warned - some people may find the haunted hall ever so frightening but that’s half the fun. Isn’t it? Whilst there you could try and solve the Horrible History Mystery and Quiz, or enjoy the storytelling, face painting and mask making. A great event for autumn half-term is the New Conker Class which is open to novices keen to `have a go’ and test their conker playing potential. Conkers are supplied for this class. There is a seasoned Conker Class which is recommended for those with some conker playing experience. Please bring your own seasoned conkers which must be pre-strung. This autumn you could save money by buying a Totally Tatton Ticket allowing entry to 3 of the following attractions over half term (the Gardens, Mansion, Farm and haunted Old Hall). Adult £11, Child £5.50, Family £27.50. For more information including opening times, event times and booking details call (01625) 374400 or go to www.tattonpark.org.uk

Halloween facts and figures! The history of Halloween can be linked to a Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced sow-in) which marked the end of the summer and the start of the cold dark winter. It was a time to celebrate the harvest and the Celts also believed that it was a time when sprits passed through to his world and so may have dressed up or lit bonfires to scare them away. The word Halloween is a shortening of All Hallows Eve. In the 8th Century the Catholic Church declared 1st November to be All Saints Day, honouring all Saints who didn’t have a named day which was celebrated in a similar manor to Samhain with bonfires, parades, costumes and feasts. A Halloween carved pumpkin is known as Jack-o’-Lantern. The tradition originated in Ireland where they originally used turnips. The legend tells about Stingy Jack a miserly farmer who played a trick on the devil and was then cursed to walk the earth for eternity lighting his way with a Jack-o’- Lantern. Halloween colours are orange and black, orange for the end of the harvest and black linked to death. A pumpkin is a squash and comes from the same family as a cucumber. There are over 50 different varieties of pumpkin. If you see a spider on Halloween tradition says it’s a loved one watching over you! In the US Halloween is 2nd only to Christmas in the amount of revenue it generates and 86% of Americans decorate their home for Halloween! It is believed that the origins of Trick or Treat have been traced back to the early 9th century when beggars would knock at houses for a biscuit called a ‘soul cake’, and in return a prayer would be said for the dead relations of the house.

On the Road By Victoria Pollitt Victoria and her family recently visited the Lake District and tell us all about their time there. Victoria stayed at the White Cross Bay Holiday Park, Windermere, travelling by car it took them about 1½ hours from mid-Cheshire. Before I begin, a confession. My husband and I lived in the Lake District for a couple of blissful years before our son was born so I must admit to a certain bias for this glorious part of the country. So it was with glee we set off with our three-year-old Josh for a last break before the arrival of our second child. We stayed from Friday to Monday at White Cross Bay Holiday Park on the shores of Windermere. It’s in a great location between Bowness and Ambleside and our two-bedroom lodge was cosy and welcoming and just a short walk to the lakeside. Having a kitchen, lounge and dining table as well as two bathrooms certainly suits us better than a hotel room right now. Park facilities are great for families and include a large, warm indoor pool, a restaurant, bar and playground. And I’m sure many who stay here imagine buying a lodge or caravan so they can pop along at will. Travelling around the Lake District is nourishment for the soul and we greedily soaked in the beautiful surrounding vistas. It was cold during our stay and unsurprisingly there were the odd showers. However, there are plenty of indoor attractions to amuse children and we certainly packed plenty in. Josh adored a visit to The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction as he’s a fan of Peter Rabbit and some of her other famous characters. We all enjoyed a boat trip with Windermere Lake Cruises, a great way to see the longest lake in England. We opted for the 40-minute route from Bowness to Lakeside where we visited the Lakes Aquarium and Josh was delighted that as well as fish, you can see otters, monkeys, crocodiles and other creatures. Then there was Lakeland Motor Museum, a much bigger hit with him than I imagined. As well as cars, there are motorbikes and bicycles and an exhibition about the record-breaking Campbell family. The adventure playground at visitor centre Brockhole also went down well as did an exploration of the grounds of Sizergh Castle. We crammed lots in but there’s a world of possibilities for families visiting the Lakes, from water sports to climbing to cycling, adventure sports and much more. Of course, exploring the fells on foot is one of the best ways to appreciate the beautiful area and I would very much recommend getting out and about in some walking boots. We made it up one hill and the view from the top, where we had a picnic, took our breath away. But at eight months pregnant and with the weather not exactly on our side we mostly opted for less strenuous pursuits on this trip. We all enjoyed a busy, fun-packed break, a great introduction for Josh to somewhere very dear to our hearts.

Take it Slow This autumn Kiddy Cook’s Nikki Geddes, tells us about the foods that are in season and about her love of her slow cooker to feed the family as the days grow shorter. Autumn is for celebrating. Halloween! Bonfire Night! Diwalli! So whether you are looking for truly hideous Halloween recipes or food to go off with a ‘BANG’ on Bonfire Night, there are some fabulous seasonal ingredients for you to choose from.

What’s in Season?

Apples, Aubergines, Borlotti Beans, Fennel, Celery, Chillies, Damsons, Sloes, Blackberries, Mulberries, Elderberries, Figs, Grapes, Floury Potatoes, Mushrooms, Nuts, Pears, Peppers, Pumpkins, Squash, Quinces, Medlars & Sweetcorn. Autumn is also the time when the slow cooker comes into its own. Slow cookers (or croc pots) are a great way to easily prepare a family, friendly meal.

Prepare and forget!

Whatever the recipe, all cooking involves a certain amount of preparation, but with slow cooking this is kept to a minimum. Once the food is in the pot it doesn’t require any attention until it’s cooked.

Fabulous Flavours!

Slow cooking food intensifies the flavours, resulting in rich, concentrated sauces, meat that falls off the bone, and aromatic spices such as star anise and cloves are great to use as their distinct flavours aren’t lost when slow cooked.

It’s Economic!

Slow cooking makes economic sense as it works best using cheaper cuts of meat and it’s really easy to cook large quantities, creating leftovers for freezing. Slow cooking enables you to make the best possible food with whatever ingredients are available. I’m a real convert to slow cooking. The spendthrift in me loves the cheaper cuts of meat which are really suited to this style of cooking, and the simplicity of throwing ingredients into a pot and letting them do their ‘thing’ is very appealing. I hope I’ve inspired you to give it a go? Happy ‘slow’ cooking!

Did you know you could make desserts in a slow cooker? Tiramisu Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • •

100g caster sugar 100g butter 2 eggs, beaten 50g grated chocolate 25g cocoa powder, sieved, plus extra to decorate 75g SR flour 250g mascarpone cheese 2 tbsp icing sugar, sifted 3 tbsp liquid coffee 1 tsp vanilla extract You will need 6 x 150 ml ramekins

Method 1. Beat the sugar and butter together until creamy and smooth, then beat in the eggs slowly, until smooth. Add the chocolate and stir in the cocoa powder. Lastly, stir in the flour. 2. Divide the mixture between the ramekins. Put 3–4 layers of greaseproof paper in the base of the slow cooker and put the ramekins on top, stacking if necessary. Pour in hot water to a depth of about 2 cm and cook for 4 hours on the high setting or 8 hours on low. Allow to cool. 3. To serve, beat together the mascarpone, icing sugar, liquid coffee and vanilla extract until smooth. Spoon a little of this mixture over the top of each chocolate base, sieve over some cocoa powder and serve. ‘MarKitt’ raises funds for Local Charity In June Altrincham Market held a special fundraising “MarKitt”, from which organisers gave all the proceeds from the stall fees to Didsbury-based charity, ReverseRett. Traders and shoppers also both gave generously and in total the event raised a staggering £12,500! The charity was chosen because six-year-old Kitt, the youngest daughter of Nick Johnson and Jenny Thompson, who recently took over the running of Altrincham Market, suffers from the rare neurological condition, Rett syndrome. This means whilst Kitt hit all her usual milestones until she was about 18 months old, she then started to regress, at first she became unsteady, lost her speech and then developed severe and complex epilepsy which is typical of the condition. ‘We found out Kitt had Rett following DNA testing although we already thought she had the condition after we met a girl suffering from the condition at Festival No6 in Wales. The problem with the condition is that it is regressive so things for Kitt are likely to get worse’ explains Jenny. Rett is only seen in girls because girls have two X chromosomes in every cell. If they have Rett syndrome, some of the cells will use the defective gene. Other cells will use the healthy genes which will help to make up for the cells using the defective gene. However, boys only have one X chromosome in every cell. They lack the extra X chromosome that can protect their bodies from being completely overcome by the disorder. Therefore boys with the cell mutation that causes Rett syndrome often die before or shortly after birth. It affects around 1 in 15,000 - which means there are 2,000 girls living with the condition in the UK. Successful research on mice undertaken by Dr Adrian Bird in Edinburgh demonstrated that it is hypothetically possible to reverse the condition and therefore resource and effort is being put into research, however as it is a rare disorder the resources are very restricted. Jenny continues “Because Rett is a rare disease it doesn’t get the funding here in the UK and most research is done in the States. ReverseRett is affiliated to the US charity and is staffed by Rett parents who are championing and putting significant money into funding research into the disorder – the thinking is that research may also feed into other neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s.” More charity events are planned over the coming months at the market whose impressive renovations are now complete. These include the historic Market House which has been completely renovated into a fabulous ‘meeting and eating’ destination for the whole family. There’s plenty of room for buggies; a designated colouring and craft area for the little ones and lots of tasty food and drink choices. For more information about what’s on when at the market, visit www.facebook.com/pages/Altrincham-Market If you would like to make a charity donation to ReverseRett, please visit www.justgiving.com/altrinchammarkitt.
