Editor’s Diary Dear Reader, A very warm welcome to our winter issue, which we hope you will enjoy. Christmas and the festive season is upon us once more. Christmas Lights are on, markets open, lists being written and sleeps being counted. I recently overheard a conversation between two children who weren’t just counting sleeps until Christmas but ‘school sleeps’ until Christmas (a slightly smaller number) – which I think was in an attempt to hurry the day’s arrival along! Once again we have some great articles which we hope will entertain, amuse and inform. As usual Nicola Foster and John Freeman make us smile with tales of the pressures of the run up to Christmas with your children, and Dads cooking the Christmas lunch. In Adventures of a Guilty Mum, Kate and Henry went to see the Elves and the Shoemaker at the Waterside Arts Centre in Sale and advocate supporting our local theatres who put on some great shows at reasonable prices, and Victoria Pollitt writes about a recent activity filled break in the Lake District. Days out and Events is full of things to see and do over the festive period and beyond, with sections on where to see Santa and local pantomimes. As ever Sue Steel makes some charming festive book recommendations in our Book Corner, and our Baby and Toddler Diary is full of places to go with your little ones. We’d like to thank all our readers and advertisers for their continuing support and encouragement over the last year and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and our best wishes for the New Year. Book Corner

Winter Reads By Sue Steel

Hello again from simply books! I’ve had a lovely time reading our selection of Christmas books and choosing a theme for our Christmas window and shop display this year. I’ve decided on a perennial favourite ‘The Jolly Christmas Postman’ by Janet and Alan Ahlberg. First written in 1991 this book has now sold over 6 million copies. Adults and children alike will enjoy the warmth and humour. On Christmas Eve, The Jolly Postman is delivering the post to various fairy-tale characters – including a get well jigsaw from ‘all the king’s horses and all the king’s men’ for hospitalised Humpty Dumpty! Children can take each colourful gift out of its envelope and discover for themselves what well-known fairy-tale characters are sending to one another for Christmas. It’s a ‘first class’ read and a lovely present. I’ll be reading this story at our annual Christmas Pyjama Party on Sunday 20th December (contact us for details!). Kipper’s Snowy Day by Mick Inkpen is another classic seasonal story. When Kipper sees cotton wool snowflakes falling outside his window he can’t wait to get outside and play with his friend, Tiger. Simply written and warmly illustrated, this charmingly comical story just makes you smile. We have copies in the shop signed by Mick Inkpen. And now for a brand new book. Stanley the Amazing Knitting Cat by Emily MacKenzie is published early in January and tells the story of a cat who gets carried away with his dream of winning the Woolly Wonders Competition. It’s a fabulously funny story with lots of colourful characters ….and of course lots of knitting too! And this year’s quirky book? 101 things to Do instead of Playing on Your Phone! This pocket size book has imaginative games and tips aimed at curing our portable tech addiction. One for the Christmas Dinner table? You can order any of the books mentioned above from us – just e-mail us through our website, or phone. Better still pop in and see them for yourself and we’ll give you a complimentary drink in our cafe while you’re browsing! (just mention Little Tigers). You can be sure of a very warm welcome. Sue

Santa’s Rusty Robot is coming to Nantwich! Iain Lauchlan (known for his writing for The Tweenies) and Imagine Theatre have come up with a brand new show which will be a lovely Christmas treat for children age between 2-7 years. Santa is having a bit of a problem with a friendly robot which he must deliver to someone on Christmas night and unfortunately, it has been left out in the snow all night by mistake. When Santa brings it into his workshop the robot has rusted up completely and can’t speak or move. Santa has to get the help of the children to find a way to get the robot’s voice and movement back. The show will also give children an opportunity to give their letter to Santa in person, specially designed paper for the letter will be available on the day or can be downloaded from www.imaginetheatre.co.uk Santa’s Rusty Robot is a show packed with fun characters, action songs, a great story and plenty of Christmas cheer, lots for the children to get involved with, and with a running time of around 35 minutes means little ones won’t lose interest but just have a great time, followed by a trip to see Santa, photo and present. Santa’s Rusty Robot is at the Nantwich Civic Hall between 5 -10 December 2015. Tickets are £12 for children and £10 for adults, available from Nantwich Civic Hall, by calling on 01270 628633 or at www.nantwichtowncouncil.gov.uk

Adventures of a Guilty Mum & her Son Wonderful visit to the Waterside Arts Centre By Kate Nield

I don’t know about you, but when it comes to days out, I am sometimes guilty of missing what is right under my nose! That is certainly the case when it comes to Sale Waterside Arts Centre. Although I have been to one production there before, I have to admit when it comes to the theatre, we are often lured away to the big stages at The Lowry and into Manchester City Centre; forgetting how wonderful a smaller venue can be. So when I received an email, with details of The Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company’s production of Elves and The Shoemaker, I decided it was time we made a visit. At just £8 for tickets the price was incredibly reasonable; particularly as you can’t even go to the cinema for that price these days. What’s great about visiting the Waterside Arts Centre is that you can make a real afternoon of it. There is a small gallery called the Lauriston Gallery which, when we went, was full of displays from the puppet makers Mackinnon & Saunders. It had everything from Corpse Bride to The Clangers and Henry really enjoyed looking at each of the models. This exhibition is free and on until 27th February 2016 and, although small, it is well worth a visit. They also have a reasonable café, which sells a great range of drinks as well as snacks. We could tell by the number of people in there that this is the usual meeting point for large families and groups of friends who had booked tickets together. As we had booked quite early we managed to get excellent seats on the second row where Henry had a fantastic view of the stage, otherwise known as the shoemaker’s flat. The production itself was a wonderful mix of traditional tale with lots of interactive “he’s behind you” thrown in – who doesn’t love that! The children of course were really excited to see the puppet elves each time they appeared. With only two actors,it was amazing to see how they managed to keep the high energy show going, and keep the children’s attention throughout. Colourful, creative and crazy in places, we all really enjoyed this adaptation of a favourite childhood tale. We had such a great time that whilst there we looked for details on the next production. Moonminland Winter is showing this Christmas from Tuesday 8th December to Saturday 2nd January. A tale of Moominland, where actors and full-sized puppets perform a brand new adaption of the original stories, with a specially written soundtrack. Hope to see you there!

The Moomins are coming to Sale this Christmas The Moomins come to life on stage at Waterside Arts Centre this Christmas in the magical Moominland Midwinter starring Moomintroll, Little My, Too-Ticky, The Hemulen and Moominmamma! In Moominland Midwinter actors and beautiful full-sized puppets perform a brand new adaptation of one of Tove Jansson’s best-loved original stories, accompanied by a specially-written soundtrack. Tove Jansson’s Moomin stories are loved all over the world, crossing barriers of language, age and culture. The books have been translated into 43 different languages and have also been animated and turned into a feature film. This is the first Moomin production to have appeared on the stage in the UK. Heart-warming, humorous and spell-binding, this is a wonderful and unique Christmas show for all the family to enjoy together, suitable for ages 4+. Moominland Midwinter is at the Waterside Arts Centre, Sale, between 8th December and 2nd January. For more information go to www.watersideartscentre.co.uk or call 0161 912 5161.

The Ups and Downs of Parenting

Christmas Confusion By Nicola Foster About mid November, I dig out my Christmas manual. This reminds me of all the people I need to send cards and presents to. Without this, I wouldn’t have a clue. In theory, Christmas should be a very simple concept; you send cards and gifts to the people of your choice and there should be no obligation on the part of the recipient to reciprocate. However, most people feel completely obliged to reciprocate and this is where Christmas gets a bit mad. Without fail, every year a card drops through the door on about the 23rd or 24th December and is inevitably from somebody I haven’t sent one to. At this late date, it is too late to post one if they live far away and if they live close by, popping one back through their door just screams “afterthought”, so I put them on my list to remind me to send them one the following year, when usually they have struck me off their list for not sending one the previous year. This complication increased as each child started school, when it soon became apparent I was not just responsible for my own social circle, but that of my children too. At the childrens’ school, everybody sent everybody else in their class a card so, in addition to writing my own Christmas cards, I had to oversee the writing of 30 or so cards for each of the three children. It was particularly painful when they were in Reception, where some of the children’s handwriting was a little tricky to decipher and made it quite hard to tell who had sent what and to whom. I can say it did get easier as they progressed through school. I don’t like to stereotype, but the girls approached this a little more enthusiasticly than their brother, whose approach to writing Christmas cards is not dissimilar to the way he practices his spellings; shrouded in an air of grumpy reluctance and without the faintest whiff of festive bonhomie. Just when I felt t I was getting to grips with all the school Christmas cards, without warning the children began exchanging presents with friends and this seemed to take place with a randomness that I found a little discombobulating. This could be more of a girl thing too as, to the best of my knowledge, neither the boy nor any of his friends have shown the slightest inclination to go down the present route, wheres the girls exchange presents with an increasing number of friends each year which, in order to avoid the stigma of becoming a playground pariah, has resulted in the purchase of selection boxes, hair clips and slipper socks on something of an unsustainable scale. Selection boxes, slipper socks and hair clips, whilst not the most imaginative of presents, are about the best non generic gifts I could muster for emergency presents to send into school the following day. Any that aren’t used by the time Christmas is upon us are easily absorbed into the household. The biggest panic sets in when somebody arrives on the doorstep bearing gifts for the children and I have nothing to give in return. Two years ago, a friend and I had decided not to buy presents for each other’s children at Christmas and then turned up with Christmas presents for the children. I think it is at this point Christmas madness was well and truly upon me. What I should have done was tell her she was a bonkers old goat and reminded her of our decision which, I suspect she had forgotten in her own Christmas flurry. Instead, social niceties and my general desire not to intentionally offend people I like, meant I garbled some long-winded explanation about how slow I was at finishing my shopping and how organised she was and then as soon as she left, screeched off to the shops to buy presents for her children. It is important to bear in mind that even the presence of a Christmas manual is no guarantee against hiccups, as it is only as good as its operator. According to my Mother, last year I sent my parents two identical Christmas cards - one delivered and one posted, which is quite odd as they live round the corner from me. The card I received last year that gave me the most Christmas cheer was one which was addressed to us but had absolutely nothing written inside. It made me feel I am not alone.

Wishing all our readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all at

A Dad’s Eye View

A Dad’s Eye View On: Christmas Dinner By John Freeman I should be clear from the outset – I love Christmas dinner. I could eat it every week. I love turkey (don’t tell me it is but a dry version of chicken), I love Brussels sprouts (cooked with chestnuts and lardons) and would sell a vital organ for a plateful of ‘pigs in blankets’. I love roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, any assortment of vegetables (honey-roasted parsnips top the bill), cranberry sauce, bread sauce and a large vat of thick, glossy gravy. As for starters, I’m easily pleased - and will emanate joy in its purest form at the thought of a retro-style prawn cocktail. And, while I’m not a fan of Christmas pudding – it’s too heavy and its weight has already been taken by the extra pigs in blankets I have shamelessly stolen off the children’s plates - I will happily eat my way around the entire geography of Britain in cheese (starting and ending with Cheshire, of course). However, I’m ashamed to admit that I have only ever prepared a Christmas dinner once. My wonderful wife usually does the honours. She is a fantastic cook in every sense – better than me in every possible way imaginable – and each year, after what seems like minimal fuss, produces an amazing meal that the family devours in a few short, silent minutes. I don’t even do the ceremonial carving of the turkey as it feels too much like I’d be cuckolding the glory-hunting finale after hours of careful preparation. My job is the clearing and washing up, and providing my wife with morale-maintaining wine. However, one year I decided I should step up and cook Christmas dinner. A couple of days before, having agreed a ‘target’ time for dinner, I realised that the skill wasn’t just about cooking everything nicely, it was about cooking everything nicely so they were ready at the SAME time. This would require me to multi-task. Weights and times needed to be calculated. A running order needed to be established. A spreadsheet was required. So, on Christmas Day, armed with a spreadsheet detailing a minute-by-minute account worthy of a major military operation, the next three hours still managed to spiral into a fraught panic. My wife had reliably informed me I could ‘guess’ how long items would need to cook because I would ‘just know’ when they were done. I couldn’t and I didn’t. As the crescendo approached – sweat pouring and expletives filling the kitchen - with the various components of Christmas dinner close to fruition, and after another slug of nerve-soothing vino, I reflected on the habitually composed brilliance of my wife. Each year, every year. I’m told the meal tasted great. Which was all that mattered. I’d somehow cooked us all a Happy Christmas dinner.

The Winter Sky at Night As winter sets in and the nights get longer it gives us a great opportunity to look up at the night sky and wonder at the stars above us. We asked the experts at The Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre to give our little ones some tips about what to look out for in the winter sky. As the nights draw in we begin to use and depend on our lights more and more, when we get home from school and work, in the car, office buildings and streets. At this time of year we also use lights to celebrate religious festivals such as Christmas, Diwali and Hanukkah. Sometimes all this man made light stops us seeing the other beautiful lights which have inspired people for all of time - the stars. As you move away from the lights of our towns and cities you start to see more and more stars in the night sky and you might be able to pick out some patterns of stars, these are called constellations. Go still further into the countryside and you will start to see a bright strip of stars across the sky, this is the Milky Way, our home galaxy in which our Sun is just one star amongst 100 billion others. The Plough

One of the easier patterns of stars to look out for in the sky is The Plough. This can be seen low in the northern sky in the early evening at this time of year and looks a bit like a saucepan. The two pointers (on the right in the picture) are used to find the North Star which, in the past, people used to help them navigate. The giant of the winter sky is Orion the Hunter. He can be seen later in the evening in November but by January he is visible in the early evening in the southern sky. You can find him by looking for his belt: Three stars in a row.

If you want to learn more about the different constellations you can see in the night sky there are many groups who will help you. At Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, the Festive Family Starlight Adventure will be running on 5th December, you can learn where stars come from and go on a lantern lit adventure to learn about some of the constellations which can be seen in the winter night sky. To help you find the constellations you may find it helpful to buy a star map which is called a planisphere (or you can download and make your own; go to www.letsgobritain.co.uk). As well as this there is a variety of apps that you could download onto a smart phone or tablet to help you navigate the night sky. You will need to find somewhere dark to look at the stars, try to use a red light torch if you need help seeing your planisphere and turn the screen brightness on your phone to a minimum. So please enjoy the festive lights as they start to appear around town centres, shops and houses but if you get the chance why not go out to see the greatest light show of all - our night sky? Childcare at Home

On the Road By Victoria Pollitt Recently Victoria and her family visited the Lake District, staying in Coniston. There was barely room for me in the car on our trip to Coniston in the Lake District. So perhaps it was for the best that I neither owned, nor thought to pack, folding chairs and a blow up boat. But it appeared that plenty of people had and I watched enviously as they merrily unfolded and relaxed in their chairs. We settled more gingerly on the pebbles at Coniston Water to enjoy a picnic. But the sun shone, the view took my breath away and our children were never going to allow us to sit around anyway. There were too many adventures to be had - and too much mischief to manage - along the shoreline, and though we didn’t have a boat to pump up, we still got to be sailors of our own vessel, without the effort, by hiring an electric motor boat from Coniston Boating Centre. It was easy to drive and we were soon pretending to be pirates as we explored the lake famous for its water speed records (it was here in 1967 that Donald Campbell died after he crashed Bluebird K7 at 328mph). We threatened no records, travelling at a leisurely pace with the limit now a modest 10 mph. Others had hired rowing boats, canoes or kayaks or took a relaxing trip on the Victorian steam-powered yacht the Gondola. And the Gondola was first crossing the lake when our accommodation was built - a delightful two bedroom cottage, fabulously located in the centre of Coniston. We booked it with The Coppermines Lake District Cottages, a company which started out with one property in Coniston 25 years ago and now has more than 80 across the Lake District. The cottage was cosy, warm, fully equipped and full of character, it even included a four-poster bed and a real log fire. And sticking with the Victorian theme, we travelled back in time to take a trip on a steam train with Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, which dates back to 1869. Josh and Jessica, aged four and one, enjoyed the whistles and hissing of steam while we also savoured the views. However, it was a more modern form of transport which really sparked happy, excited faces all round. I had ridden a bicycle at Grizedale Forest once before and struggled (got off and walked) up many of the steep hills. Fortunately Grizedale Mountain Bikes hire electric bikes - practically essential if you are towing children in trailers. It turned out that Josh and Jessica were able to sit in one trailer together, attached to my husband’s bike. But I still wanted an electric one and would never have kept up without it. They are power assisted so you can’t, as I had imagined, sit back and enjoy the scenery, you still need to pedal. But it means the steep hills, whilst not a total breeze, are entirely and enjoyably manageable and I sailed gleefully, if slightly guiltily, past seasoned cyclists and enthusiastic youngsters uphill on the forest roads. Josh and Jess adored it and Stuart and I enjoyed feelings of freedom and exhilaration you seldom have when focussing entirely on the needs of two small people. Of course it’s for the walking that many visit the glorious Lake District and we did manage some of that including a stroll around the tranquil beauty spot Tarn Hows. We did not attempt the Old Man of Coniston, the mountain which towers over the village. We have climbed it before but felt that with Josh and Jessica in tow it would be a step too far on this visit - without electrical help or folding chairs to collapse into at the summit. For information go to www.coppermines.co.uk, www.conistonboatingcentre.co.uk, www.lakesiderailway.co.uk and www.velobikes.co.uk. Lake District information is at www.golakes.co.uk

Party Planner

A Very Special Christmas Tree Festival The Parish of St John the Evangelist Church in Lostock Gralam is planning a very special Christmas Tree Festival this year to help raise much needed funds for local charity The Joshua Tree. The plan is to tell the story of The Selfish Giant, the much loved children’s tale by Oscar Wilde, who built a wall around his beautiful garden to keep children out. After the children stopped visiting it was always winter, the trees and flowers were so sad they lost their beauty and became covered in snow and frost, spring no longer came to the garden. Then one morning, a special child brought spring back, and the giant’s heart melted along with the snow. The plan for the festival is to tell the tale through decorated trees, flower displays and painted panels. The real trees will, viewed from the west of the church reflect the Giants winter garden in blues, silver and white. Viewed from the east of the church the trees will reflect the spring full of colour with hints of fruit and blossom. The specially painted panels again viewed from the west will be cold and wintery but viewed from the east will be colourful and bright. Graham Sheen is the warden of the church and the artist responsible for the panels. He explains further “there will be some surprises over the weekend, and hopefully a drawing competition centred on the story. This is an ambitious plan, but we really do hope it will be successful and raise a great deal of money for the Joshua Tree” The Joshua Tree charity supports Cheshire families living with the life-changing experience of childhood cancer. They offer support to the whole family to ensure that life remains as normal as possible during a very difficult time. They are raising funds to create a Support Centre and Holiday House for families to have much needed time together. The Christmas Tree Festival is on 12 & 13th December at The Parish of St John the Evangelist, Lostock Gralam. For more information about the Joshua Tree go to www.thejoshuatree.org.uk

TinyTalk Top National Children’s Awards TinyTalk teachers across Cheshire are pleased and proud that their baby signing classes have been recognised as a leading activity provider for pre-schoolers across the UK. Out of nearly 90,000 votes in the prestigious What’s on 4 Juniors Awards 2015, young families have made it clear that TinyTalk’s communication classes are a firm favourite as they won an award in each of the main categories: • Winning the top award for UK’s favourite toddler classes, as ‘Best National Pre-schooler Development Activity (2 to 5 years)’. • Coming second, with a Highly Commended, in the nation’s most popular baby activity provider category, ‘Best National Baby & Toddler Development Activity (newborn to 2 years). • And taking home top prize as the winner in the Best Exported Activity for Children. TinyTalk, now in its 14th year has a strong team of over 125 teachers delivering its popular baby signing and toddler communication classes to over 7,000 young families each week. Claire Hardy, a TinyTalk teacher in Wilmslow, Macclesfield and Frodsham, said: “This is a real testament to how fun and professional our TinyTalk classes are. The families who come to my classes tell me time and time again how much they mean to them and how well their little ones develop in both language development and confidence. I’m so proud to be part of TinyTalk and delighted that our families love what we do so much!” TinyTalk have classes throughout Cheshire, call one to book your place.
