Baker Farm-Baker’s Golden Dairy NEW WATERFORD — In 1884 William C. Baker constructed the barn using timber he logged from the farm. Sadly, an accident occured as the barn was nearing completion causing Baker to succumb to his injuries a year later. Fast forward to 2016 where Kevin and Debra Baker now run the farm, Baker’s Golden Dairy. Married in 1981 and four children later, Kevin and Debra decided to expand the farm. Kevin’s dream had always been to bottle and sell his own milk, the way it used to be, so in 2010 the planning began. With four generations of Bakers working on the 500 acre plus farm, bottling finally began in 2011 after many trial runs and state inspections. This made Baker’s Golden Dairy the very first on-farm bottling plant in Columbiana County. The family milks about 100 cows which produce between 600-700 gallons of milk a day. The milk is pasteurized and non-homogenized with no hormones added to milk production and absolutely no anitbiotics are used. In addition, they are farming more than 500 acres.

Westbrook Farm

LEETONIA — The Westbrook Farm, located at 38760 Miller Road, was purchased by Ruth and Ray Westbrook in 1961. Orphaned as a child, Westbrook was determined that his family would always have a home. The barn hadn’t been used for several years before the Westbrooks purchased it, but evidence of a large chicken house shows that eggs were more than likely a staple. Today there are four generations working on the farm and Westbrook’s daughter, Sharon Westbrook Braunberns, says that her father would be extremely pleased to see the farm today, knowing that his wish that the family would always have a home has been fulfilled.

Richard now operates it as a beef cattle farm with his sons, Jonathon and Bruce, who plan to someday carry on the tradition of the family’s farm. The barn was painted for the first time by Richard and his best friend, Jeff Brown, in 1974. The letters for the barn were made by Richard’s wife’s father, John Betteridge in 1975. Duke Farm SALEM — More than seven generations of the same family have been operating the Duke Farm in Salem Township since 1803. Todd and Julie Duke currently farm at the 2274 Jersey Ridge Road site of what is believed to be the oldest farm in Salem Township. The barn, which is believed to be at least 230 years old, is a four-cribbed bank barn made of logs. Most log cabin style barns sit on the ground, but this farm has a bank barn, which is very rare. The barn first housed dairy cows, then hogs and now beef cattle. In 2004 the family started remodeling the straw shed. It took a total of 15 weeks of working mainly at night and on weekends.

Fraser Farm

MADISON TOWNSHIP — Six generations of the Fraser family have been farming at the same location since 1813. The Fraser family came to Columbiana County from Scotland in 1804 and settled in this area, which is known as the Scottish Settlement, because of the large number of Scots living there. They bought the original 165 acres in 1813 and an additional 60 acres in 1898. In the early 1990s another 50 acres was added. The original bank barn was built in 1843, but that barn collapsed in the early 1970s. A new barn was built for dairy in the mid 1970s. Today it is operated by Claire and Mary Fraser. It is still used as a grain farm as well as pasture for beef cattle and donkeys.
