The Lincolnwood Summer Day Camp program prides itself on being… SAFE With the lowest staff-to-camper ratios in the area, we pride ourselves on offering a safe summer camp experience from start to finish! Our staff is selected for their enthusiasm, maturity and experience working with children. They go through an extensive training prior to the start of camp so they are well-prepared to handle the needs of all participants.

ENGAGING We believe in structuring our camps to involve and engage each camper as they learn, play and grow. Summer is a time to explore and try new things. We will do our best to introduce your child to as many new experiences as possible. Our goal is for every child to have a well-rounded summer camp experience from start to finish so that they are eager to return year after year!

AFFORDABLE Our goal is to provide high-quality programs at affordable prices so that everyone is able to participate. We are proud to offer an early registration fee, sibling discounts and a camp payment plan.

ACCOMMODATING We do our best to offer flexible programming to meet the needs of all participants. We offer full day, half day and partial week registration options as well as “Picka-Week” which offers further customization for your summer scheduling. Email communication tools, such as weekly newsletters and calendars, allow parents to be in the know with everything camp-related!

“A truly wonderful experience. My children are already looking forward to next summer.” 6|

WEDNESDAY JULY 12 • 6:00-7:30PM PROESEL PARK SHELTER

Summer camp families from Session I and Session II are invited to our Family Picnic. Join us for camp games and activities followed by a picnic-style meal including pizza, chips and dessert. Bring your own blanket and Frisbees for a fun-filled family event!

|7

GENERAL INFORMATION STAFF SUPERVISION

Each camp is supervised daily by a qualified adult supervisor. Some camps, depending on size, also have an assistant. High school and college-age counselors are carefully selected for their demonstration of maturity and enthusiasm as well as experience working with children. All camp staff members complete an extensive training including first aid and CPR certification prior to the start of camp. Please see staff-tocamper ratios highlighted for each general recreation camp throughout this publication.

FRIENDSHIP REQUEST

We recognize the value of attending camp with a friend. Campers who want to be grouped together should request each other on two separate Friendship Request Forms available on page 36, online at www.recreation.lwd.org/summer-day-camp, and in the Parks and Recreation office. Friendship Requests apply only to full session registrants. Campers may request only one friend and the request must be reciprocal.

BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT

All campers are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times. Guidelines have been developed to help make our programs safe and enjoyable for all. The Camper Code of Conduct in the Parent Handbook should be reviewed with your child prior to the first day of camp.

WEATHER

Camp is held rain or shine, with participants moved to indoor space when necessary. We will communicate camp drop-off and pickup location changes through email as this information becomes available.

LUNCH

Please send your child to camp with a lunch and beverage each day, unless otherwise noted in the camp calendars posted online at www.recreation.lwd.org/summer-daycamp.

8|

HEALTH AND SAFETY

All campers must have a completed Camper Data Form on file by the first day of camp. Forms are available online for downloading at www.recreation.lwd.org/camp, and are also available in the Parks and Recreation office. No camper will be allowed to stay at camp if he/she does not have a completed Camper Data Form on file. Information collected on this form includes emergency contacts, medical information, allergy information, permission to attend field trips and authorized pick-up persons. It is your responsibility as a parent/guardian to notify the Parks and Recreation Department of any physical, mental or medical conditions that may require special attention while your child is at camp. Please do not send your child to camp if he/she is sick. Children should be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to camp after an illness.

COMMUNICATION

The Parent Handbook will be available at www.recreation.lwd.org/camp by May 26. Please read through this booklet prior to the start of camp for everything you need to know about camp including information on lunches, field trips, sunscreen, swimming, camp clothing, hours and drop-off/pickup procedures. Camp calendars will be posted online at www.recreation.lwd.org/ camp by May 26. Each calendar will list highlighted activities, theme days, field trips and special food days. Although we do our best to adhere to the calendars, activities are subject to change. We will communicate all changes with you well in advance to avoid confusion. In an effort to remain “green”, all newsletters and calendars will be emailed. Please make sure to provide a current email address at time of registration.

EARLY REGISTRATION FEE

We encourage families to register for camp by March 31 to receive the Early Bird Discount. The Early Bird Discount applies to Resident and Non-Resident camp fees.

AMERICAN CAMP ASSOCIATION

The American Camp Association (ACA) is a community of camp professionals dedicated to ensuring the high quality of camp programs. The ACA community of camps promotes active participation, caring relationships, and focus on the emotional, social, and physical growth of the individual. As a leading authority in youth development, ACA works to preserve, promote, and improve the camp experience. The ACA standards identify practices considered basic to a quality camp experience. Accredited camps are responsible not only to meet the state and local laws, but have voluntarily chosen to also meet those requirements defined by the standards.

M-NASR CAMP INFORMATION

Maine-Niles Association of Special Recreation (M-NASR) provides a variety of Summer Day Camps for youth and teens with special needs. M-NASR offers five different Summer Day Camps with weekly registration available. For Member Districts’ residents, there are transportation and scholarship opportunities. To ensure the camper has a successful camp experience, M-NASR provides a structured camp environment and staff according to the needs of the camper. M-NASR’s Summer Day Camps mirror Member District Camps’ activities. These offer swimming, arts and crafts, sports, group games and field trips. They also work on increasing social skills and self-esteem; facilitate peer interactions and community integration. Summer 2017 Camp Offerings (schedules may change)

Prairie Dogs, Little Lincolns, Camp Potawatomie, Rutledge Rockets, Adventure Camp, Camp 74, Warm-Ups, and Overtime are all ACA accredited camps.

LITs will experience what it is like to be a camp counselor by leading activities with our younger campers. This is NOT camp for older kids! This is a leadership program. LITs will meet with the LIT Coordinator for leadership training each Monday and spend the rest of the week at their designated camps – either Prairie Dogs, Little Lincolns, or Camp Potawatomie. Interested candidates must complete an application by June 2, 2017 and will be asked which camp they would prefer to work with. All applicants will participate in an interview for consideration. HONOR

CELEBRATE REMEMBER

LINCOLNWOOD MEMORIAL DAY PARADE AND FESTIVITIES MONDAY, MAY 29 | 2017 Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the 20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. Please help Lincolnwood and American Legion Post #1226 celebrate Memorial Day. The parade kicks off at the corner of Cicero and Pratt Avenues at approximately 10:20am, traveling east on Pratt Avenue, turning north on Keeler Avenue, ending in Proesel Park at Madeline’s Garden. The ceremony will take place in Madeline’s Garden at approximately 11am. All Memorial Day activities are free of charge. For more information or to register a parade group, call the Parks and Recreation Department at (847) 677-9740 or visit our website at www.recreation.lwd.org
