“Ready Player One” is a science fiction novel written by Ernest Cline, which eventually turned into a Science Fiction movie directed by Steven Spielberg. The plotline follows Wade Watts and his virtual life in a dystopian world where Virtual Reality has gotten so advanced, and the real world has gotten so terrible that the VR world known as the OASIS is now the only world that matters. The creator of the VR world that everyone lives in has died and has left a scavenger hunt for the creator’s fortune and title as the owner of the OASIS. Although Cline wrote the novel with the intention of it being sci-fi, the OASIS might become reality in the near future. As the new year begins, millions of eyes are on the tech giants waiting to see what sort of innovations will forecast the technology trends for the year. This year companies like Meta (formerly Facebook) got a head start, beginning with the company’s name change and overall rebranding back on Oct. 28, 2021. This raised a lot of speculation due to Facebook’s large stake in the VR industry. The term “metaverse” is “a virtual-reality space in which users can interact with a computer-generated environment and other users”, and by the looks of it, that is Meta’s top priority of 2022.

The Beginning of The Metaverse

Meta started their dive into the VR scene back in 2016 when they bought Oculus in 2014 for $2.3 billion worth of cash and Facebook stock. At the time Oculus was a Kickstarter company, promising a VR headset without actually releasing one to the general public. Since then, Oculus has released six headsets to the public. Oculus remained a subsidy of Facebook up through 2018 until they finally merged into Facebook Technologies LLC. The metaverse is currently being worked on through Meta’s VR app Horizon Worlds. The app features thousands of player-created worlds that feature many different games and lounging spaces, very similar to the OASIS. Other Apps such as VRChat also feature a similar experience involving different rooms where people can hang out. The name change to Meta is not the only advancement that the tech industry has made towards an OASIS-like future. Companies like Knoxlabs have made advancements in the actual haptics involved with the headsets. Items like gloves, vests and boots that all respond to the VR setting in the real world. For example, if your character gets punched you feel a similar, lighter punch in the real world. Knoxlabs also develops treadmills that allow immersive running in the VR world.

Outside of The OASIS

Although the Metaverse is a high priority for VR developers, it is not the only source of innovation throughout the VR industry. VR is being used to demonstrate new jobs for future employees at companies like Premium Service Brands, a CNBC article reports. “Instead of spending over an hour on a video call with an accountant explaining a balance sheet, which some trainees found ‘pretty boring,’ the company created a financial simulation based on real-life scenarios.” CNBC Reporter Lucy Handley states, “While the upfront cost of setting up such a system is more than that of classroom learning,” Premium Service Brands Vice President Deb Jewell said, “it’s more efficient because people learn more quickly.”

Virtual Reality Hits LHS

VR sales are projected to increase by 38.6% from 2021-2022 according to Statista, and here at LHS plenty of students have hopped on the trend. Over 73% of LHS students surveyed say they have used a VR console. Games like Beat Saber, Blade and Sorcery, Bowling and Gorilla Tag have been at the top charts of the VR store and the LHS student body.

Pioneered by LHS freshman Nora Geffre, RSPCT (retro, stylish, pop culture, throwback) club, also known as Retro Club, aims to bring together—people who want to bring back the past. Club president Geffre and club adviser/ LHS teacher Anne Engelland discovered their mutual love of retro games, shows, music, fashion, etc. early this school year, and formed RSPCT in November of 2021. Geffre and Engelland both have a passion for old fashion, activities and trends and wanted to create a space where people could enjoy and share this together. “I love shows from the 70s, 80s and 90s so I decided why not make a club out of it,” said Geffre. The club meets from 3:15-4:15 p.m. in room A510 every Wednesday of the month, excluding the 3rd Wednesday, and also meets in the library during the club Friday Ad Room time. The club has, in previous meetings: watched game shows from the 70s with snacks, compared retro style to modern style and played throwback board games from the 70s and 80s. The club does not have a set structure for its meetings and is willing to accept

ideas from people interested in joining. “We are still figuring [out what a typical meeting looks like] and welcome suggestions from anyone who joins us. We

are just going week by week,” said Geffre. Switching up the activities has been an important goal of the club, in order to accommodate everyone’s interests. The club aims to bring together lovers of all things 70s, 80s and 90s, but it also aims to create a community in which people can make friends, form connections and have fun. “We try to change up the agenda, so it is not always the same and offers a little something for everyone. We have ideas for upcoming meetings such as previewing binge-worthy shows, watching a full-length movie, more trivia and games, arts and crafts, etc.,” said Engelland. From old music, TV shows and movies to retro fashion and food, the RSPCT club offers a little bit of everything for everyone. Between the three Wednesdays and the monthly club Friday meeting, the club meets four times a month, offering opportunities for attendance even for people with filled schedules. RSPCT is welcoming and willing for people to join. “Just show up! Even if you can only come once a month, we would love to have you join us,” said Engelland.

JAXSON BUTTON From Homeschool to LHS

One of the hardest decisions parents go through is deciding where they want their kids to attend school. From a young age, education can consist of public schools, private schools, homeschooling or even advanced placement schools. Everyone is different, but no matter where you go, it should always feel normal. Understanding the differences between every school can be difficult. Luckily for one student, he has participated in two: homeschool and public school.

Jaxson Button, junior at LHS, has transitioned from being homeschooled during preschool to 8th grade to going to public school his freshman year. He has gone from a one on one teaching setting to almost 30 kids in all of his classes. It has definitely been a change for him. “I was never used to taking tests under pressure, which made it really hard for me to adapt to the tests I had to take during my freshman year, and getting used to the roll of the classes which I had no control of,” said Button. Button enjoys going to public school now, in fact many wonder why he was homeschooled in the first place. Every family has a reason for something they do. “My mom had always wanted to be really close to my two older sisters and I, so she wanted to homeschool us in order to spend more time and develop a really strong relationship with us,” said Button. “She had grown up in a family where they weren’t close, and her wish was for that to ever be true with our family.” Starting off public school in 9th grade is not always stress-free. Instead of slowly building up to the classes that may define a future, Button had to switch pretty quickly and understand the public school system instantly to stay caught up. It was not always easy at the beginning to transition so drastically. “I was immediately at a set back because some of my credits weren’t accepted from middle school, so I had to essentially start fresh,” said Button. “Along with that, I went into school with

a really solid group of seven friends who have stuck together throughout all of high school, but with all of them being a grade above me and all but two going to Washington High School, I was left alone a grade below to find new friends and try and fit in as best as I could.” Although these challenges stuck out at the beginning, there are many benefits Button has experienced going to public school. He has made new friendships, tried out new activities and has been able to get the high school experience he deserves. “I have been able to meet new people and develop great relationships with them, become more outgoing, try new sports (whether they go good or bad) and face new immense challenges with classes that I put myself through,” said Button. Since he has experienced both schooling options, Button has made many conclusions from the two. He realized that the normal stereotypes do not always add up and that real life is different from the movie. “Homeschoolers get a bad rap a lot of times, and I can understand; it’s an odd concept for someone who has been in the public school system for their whole life,” said Button. “But homeschoolers get treated too harshly in my opinion. Most homeschooled kids aren’t ‘weird’ or ‘different’ like some people might think.” All in all, no one is the same and many people go through different experiences. With Button’s involvement in public school and homeschooling, he has had the

offee shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants: downtown Sioux Falls is loaded with small business support. Kristin Chau is a small business owner and the general manager of The Source located on Phillips Ave in northern downtown. The Source is a local coffee shop and taproom. The family-owned business focuses on interactions with customers and the community around them. The Source works with local farmers and business owners to supply products for their business. The Source was not the original brand of the local coffee shop, but the original idea came from a former Sioux Falls coffee shop, Black Sheep. After more than 15 years of business, Kum and Go bought the old location which meant tearing down the building on 12th and Grange. “We were patient when it came to finding commercial real estate because we knew the location would matter when it came to the success

of our business. The rebranding also took time. We knew Black Sheep could not be duplicated, thus the rebrand. Black Sheep was deeply rooted in the community. It was a space that everyone called home. It had a unique character, and the space would be filled with conversations from many different ethnic groups,” said Chau. During the process of the rebranding, many ideas came to mind to make this coffee shop different from the rest. “I had taken over the business [from my family] and always felt the vision

could be bigger. I wanted to create a brand that encompassed more than just coffee. A brand with coffee, beer and wine. A brand that had sophistication. A brand that could travel the U.S. through wholesale and retail sales,” said Chau. With any business, challenges always seem to appear. Challenges have come not just with COVID-19, but with rebranding and new bright ideas for the business some ideas are easier said than done. “Our tap wall pushed our customers out of their comfort zone. It is a selfserve system that is activated by an RFID card/bracelet. The challenges were easily resolved with a thorough explanation and interactive display,” said Chau. “Supply chain shortages and staffing have been the greatest challenge within the past year. I have learned to pivot and get creative when it comes to purchasing inventory.” The Source is very active in the community and enjoys supporting other local businesses and places, some including, Augustana, Avera, Sanford, Boys + Girls Club, Alzheimer’s Association and many more. They hope that while doing this and much more their future in Sioux Falls is big and bright. “I hope The Source continues to imprint a positive footprint on our community, and I hope we continue to grow within the community, serving our customers and building relationships. In 2022, we will be expanding our brand to serve commercial businesses and wedding venues with our mobile coffee cart. We are excited about the many opportunities that lie ahead,” said Chau.

As the new year begins, it is time to look back at all the unforgettable moments of 2021 that happened here at LHS.

The LHS girls bowling team, coached by Coach Louis Winter, led them to a state championship victory on Feb. 25-26 at Empire Bowl in Sioux Falls, SD. BY

The LHS track team headed out west to Sturgis on May 28-29 to compete for a state title. The LHS girls track team placed third and the boys’ track team placed first, but were in second place until the last race, the 4x400 meters, that led them to finish in first. All together head track coach Jim Jarovski led the LHS track team to win a combined boys and girls state title.

The 2020-2021 school year came to an end on May 26, 2021, and it was officially summertime for the Patriots.

Summer 2021 sadly had to come to an end, and all the Pats returned to LHS for the 20212022 school year.

Homecoming took place all week on Sept. 13-17 with many fun dress-up days and events. Charlie Mickelson was crowned LHS Homecoming King and Marisa Weinzetl was named LHS Homecoming Queen. The homecoming football game took place on Friday, Sept. 17, where the LHS Pats took on Rapid City Stevens and won 35-14.

The LHS Marching Band and Colorguard had one of their best seasons yet with a theme of “The Queen’s Gambit.” They performed at many halftimes at football games and competitions, and to complete their outstanding season, they headed to St. Louis to compete against bands from 12 different states with a total of 58 bands. They placed second in their class and 11th overall.

LHS students got dressed up in their formal attire and attended LHS’ winter formal on Dec. 4, 2021, in the LHS gym with roughly 900 kids that attended throughout the night.

Prom took place on Apr. 24, 2021, with an underground theme at the Social since COVID-19 restrictions prohibited prom from happening at LHS.

On Friday, Sept. 10, 2021, all the Lincoln Crazies headed out to Howard Wood Field for everyone’s favorite football game of the year, the President’s Bowl. LHS skipped their traditional President’s Bowl whiteout theme and wore purple to join competitor team HHS in support of suicide prevention. LHS lost 27-35 to HHS but kept close with the number one team in the state.

On Oct. 2, 2021, the LHS Pats battled against the HHS Tigers for the 2021 softball state title. Trent Dlugosh helped lead the LHS pats to the top and take home the title, winning with a score of 9-6 during the seven-inning win in the second game of the championship.

The year with many memorable times for LHS sadly comes to an end, but 2022 begins with even more chances to create even more memories for LHS students and staff. DESIGN BY

A year ﬁlled with biopics

Set in late-1960s Chicago, this film tells of the Black Panther Party and the true betrayal that took place. William O’Neal (LaKeith Stanfield) is offered a plea deal by the FBI in exchange for information about the Chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya). While dramatized, the plot still follows real events, piquing the audience’s interest through the eyes of characters based on real people. Released in early 2021, “Judas and the Black Messiah” was up for many awards in the 2021 awards season, including six Oscars. It ended up winning two Oscars, along with countless other achievements, proving its importance within the 2021 film scene along with biopic history.

This biopic thoroughly follows the life of the revolutionary singer Aretha Franklin (played by Jennifer Hudson). Follow her journey from starting out as a talented child singing in a church choir to an international superstar, along with her internal and interpersonal conflicts that were hidden from the public eye. Biopics on musicians are more common than any other subject, but this film was highlighted for Hudson’s strong vocals that some think made the soundtrack more engaging than some moments from the film.

What is a biopic? Biopics are essentially biographical films, sharing the lives of many individuals with a wide range of audiences. They can follow countless personalities, from musicians to royalty and even to the occasional serial killer. Commonly based on books, this category is often known to dramatize the people and events they follow, in an attempt to interest audiences more and (in many cases) make more money. Nonetheless, biopics have shaped the film industry since the days of silent, black and white motion pictures that grew the cultural presence of films into what it is today. 2021 was no exception to the inclusion of these films, even with the countless movie theater closures around the world due to COVID-19 lockdowns. While many of these films had to delay their release dates as pushes for more money, others embraced the temporary closures by releasing the features on streaming services, like the biopic “King Richard” on HBO Max. Furthermore, this year has brought a great variety of biopics to screens, causing audiences to learn more about unique people and events within their lives.

This film tells of the ridiculously fascinating life of Tammy Faye Bakker (Jessica Chastain), wife of infamous televangelist Jim Bakker (Andrew Garfield). Many tend to focus on Bakker due to his religious exploitation of donors and notably alternative methods of preaching, which makes the somewhat untold story of Tammy Faye all the more intriguing. Known for her peppy voice and generous application of bright makeup, Tammy Faye intrigued many, even when she was at the height of her fame, making her story an extremely compelling subject for a biopic. Gucci is a household name, but mainly for the luxury brand and not the family behind it. “House of Gucci” tells the dramatic tale of this Italian family and the murder and betrayal that took place in 1978. Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga) met Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver), a law student at the time, at a party and learns that he is heir to a great sum of money from his father due to the vast success of their fashion brand. This film truly exposes the vile things that some people do for money. Again, this story is made all the more alluring due to its true story, keeping right with its biopic nature. The somewhat unknown yet true story of Richard Williams (Will Smith) and his elaborate plan to get his daughters, Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena (Demi Singleton), into sports history through their talent for tennis. This great tale of perseverance in the toughest of times not only gives the public more of an idea of the upbringing of the well-known tennis star sisters but also sheds light on possibly an even more interesting character, their father. Follow the Williams family as they battle their children up to stardom, leaving a permanent mark on sports history. There have been many adaptations of Princess Diana Spencer’s tragic story, but this one takes an entirely different spin on it, refreshing audiences with a deeper tale of psychological uncomfortableness and lesser-known details about Princess Diana’s estrangement and the sickening unwelcomeness she experienced from the British Royal family. Set right as the marriage between Prince Charles (Jack Farthing) and Princess Diana (Kristen Stewart) grows cold with a lack of love, the royal family takes a trip to one of the Queen’s (Stella Gonet) estates to celebrate Christmas. the Team’s outlook WHY did you become interested in the wrestling program here at LHS? Ethan Husser, 12 - “I did judo and wrestling as a kid growing up and the coach is really nice, and the teammates are really fun to hang out with.” Nicole Portillo, 10 - “To see people and then I started to like it because it helps me and my other sisters. What is the wrestling community like at LHS? Ethan - “It’s a really positive environment. Everyone pushes each other to get better and tries to improve.” Nicole - “We can have fun together. I have fun with [everyone], and I don’t ever feel alone. It’s like a family or friends who are chill.” Tae - “The wrestling team has always seemed to have a family. I was welcomed to the team as a 7th grader, and I try to give out that same energy as a senior on the team.”

ver the course of the last several years, the LHS wrestling program has continued to grow and evolve. With 37 wrestlers on the roster this season, there has been an excellent amount of diversity for head coach, Mark Ernster, to work with. With the combination of LHS boys, girls and middle schoolers all being able to wrestle for LHS, there are many different opportunities to improve for everyone on the team. To many, the LHS wrestling team and how it works is one of the more unknown topics of the school. The wrestling team competes in 21 events this year all across the state before the State tournament starts, facing off against teams from all different classes and conferences throughout

their different events. Matches for the Patriots this season consist of competing against anywhere from two to 39 teams at once in a match. Within those teams, the LHS wrestlers compete against other opponents within their own weight class, meaning people who are close to their own weight. Depending on how each wrestler performs in their individual matches within their weight class will help the team accumulate points towards their overall total for the event. As one can imagine, a win would earn the most points, then a tie, followed by a loss. Although there are points awarded for ties and losses, the more wins a player can get, the more opportunities they have to compete in more matches and earn more points for their team. The team with the most points after every match, in every weight class,

wins. This means that although it is only one-on-one on the wrestling mat, wrestlers are not only competing for their own success, but for their team’s success as well. With the addition of the girls wrestling program, as well as being able to provide middle schoolers with the chance to wrestle, there are many more opportunities for everyone within the LHS wrestling community. Some of LHS’ most successful programs over the last decade have also offered middle schoolers the chance to compete for their high school’s team, such as tennis, track and field and cross country. Having the opportunity to train the future Patriots at a younger age within their high school program gives them all that much more of a head start to be great in their high school wrestling years.

Nicole - “I think things will go good. [The team] went to Rapid City [for a tournament], and they did pretty well.” Tae - “I believe this is the best team that Lincoln has had in a long time, and we plan to do some great things this year.”

What is your favorite part about the wrestling team? Ethan - “Going out to the bigger cities or staying overnight with the team.” Tae - “The amount of effort that we put in as a team and the overwhelming support that we have for each other.”

How do you feel having both boys and girls on the team, as well as middle schoolers, provides value to the team? Ethan - “It’s great to get everyone included. It makes the environment more casual and fun.” Nicole - “Yeah because the girls can learn from the guys and the guys from the girls.”

What is your favorite part about the wrestling team? “Getting to know the kids individually and learning what motivates them and what makes them want to compete and strive to get better every day and every week.”

What got you interested in wrestling as a kid? “In elementary school, kids started bringing medals to school and trophies to school.”

South Dakota is known for not having warm winters. The state’s average winter temperatures range from 32°F to 10°F. So, why do I see people wearing shorts to school? A new survey on yougov.com asked people to name the lowest temperature they believe is warm enough to wear shorts outside. The most common answer was between 61°F and 70°F, which got 25% of the votes. Between 71°F and 80°F came second, with 23% of the votes. It is also “scientifically proven” that men are more likely to wear shorts in colder weather than women, which definitely fits the trend that I have noticed. When asked about their attire, the winter-shorts people always respond with the same things such as “I’m just built different or It’s not even that cold.” When asked about his shorts, LHS senior Ethan Husser, who can be found any month of the year wearing shorts, responded with, “It’s literally 40°F outside; it’s not even winter, bro.” It is true, we are having a very mild winter in South Dakota so far, but 40°F is definitely a little too chilly for shorts. “It’s comfy; it’s not too cold out,” said LHS freshman shorts-wearer Jericho Klein. “My parents are the

only ones who make fun of me for it.” Klein wears shorts to school as much as he can and says that he only wears pants if he is going to be outside all day. He stands by his decisions and says that “shorts are for sure acceptable in the winter.” Although Klein and Husser both think that shorts are acceptable during the winter, there are many reasons why it is not a viable option. Wearing shorts means that your legs are not protected from the snow, rain or slush. Being cold for too long can also lead to getting sick. In this day and age, all it takes is a slight sniffle, and you’re expected to mask up, leading to all sorts of disruptions in your life. Wearing a mask is enough of a hassle. Now imagine trying to wear your mask while your nose is running, and your legs are freezing. All of this could have been avoided if you had worn longer and warmer pants. In conclusion, don’t wear shorts during the winter. You could have wet socks, you could get sick and you just look like a moron. There is a reason why pants are a thing, and it’s to protect yourself from the harshness of mother nature. It has become very apparent, especially in recent years, that people have developed an unusual fixation on the genre of entertainment known as true crime. What is the deal with this obsession and what effect does it have on its most frequent viewers? Before diving into the psychology behind the true-crime fixation and its influence on today’s culture, it is interesting to discover how the genre of entertainment originated. According to Daily.org, versions of true crime publications first started to make way in the mid-16th century. Pamphlets written by British authors and writers circulated Europe, that detailed numerous horrific murders, as well as trial accounts that gave details of juridical proceedings. These types of publications were only viewed by higher classes at the time, as they had not been massproduced. Moving into the 19th century, true crime news still began to spread, especially with the invention of the penny press, but a new aspect of crime analysis was also on its way. he start of a new year comes with interminable resolutions and expectations. When it comes to self-growth, however, the majority of us struggle to produce tangible goals that positively enhance our daily lives from a cellular level. We are all our own worst critics, routinely dissatisfied with ourselves and the society that surrounds us. According to the National Science Foundation, 80% of a person’s everyday thoughts are negative. Of these adverse thoughts, many are directed toward ourselves, creating an unfavorable self-image, leading to an overall more pessimistic view of the world. “Many people are conscious of an inner voice that provides a running monolog on their lives throughout the day,” said Psychology Today. “This inner voice, or self-talk, combining conscious thoughts and unconscious beliefs and biases, provides a way for the brain to interpret and process daily experiences.” Implementing positive self-talk into this stream of consciousness can be especially hard when becoming discouraged when comparing ourselves to everyone else is incredibly easy. How are we expected to talk positively to ourselves when it feels like our worth is measured in our social media analytics? Not all negativity can be attributed solely to social media and the internet, but it surely plays some effect. People have degraded themselves long before these platforms were around; however, the mere existence of social media can keep us on a never-ending mental spiral of toxicity with seemingly no exit strategy.

It is important to keep in mind though, that we control more of our thought processes than we realize. Now, more than ever, it is vital to be mindfully kind to ourselves and others. Pessimistic ideas are powerless until they take on a life of their own through physical belief or speech. You cannot control all of the negative thoughts that pop into your head, but you are in control to choose the ones you speak into existence; the thoughts you believe. Goals for the new year, like making a conscious effort to complain less, limiting self-deprecating comments or simply being more amicable, can have a prominent impact on overall quality of life. Helpful tools like a social media cleanse or prioritizing self-care practices once in a while also help to monumentally boost energy. “Anytime a person can focus on the positive and things they have control of doing differently, it will help them improve their self-esteem and can even help to bring out optimism in others,” said LHS counselor Becky Thomas. “Positive self-talk helps generate positive thoughts, emotions and behaviors.” Self-growth prospers through not letting all of the incessant negative thoughts get out of control. After all, our words powerfully influence those around us and ultimately shape the way we view the world.
