Whether it be cricket in India, football in America or soccer in basically the rest of the world, one of the most common interests of men across the world is sports. But, when hanging out with men, you might hear a “throw on the Hawks game, I have Dejounte Murray over on points” or a “can we watch the Mariners game, I have money on a NRFI” (no run first inning).

It is no secret that people love to gamble, but recently, this addiction has spread to teenagers as well. With gambling going mobile and becoming more accessible, apps like PrizePicks, Underdog and Fliff are becoming more pervasive among young people in America today. This development is actually illegal in all states, as sportsbooks are illegal for people under 18 in some states and completely illegal in other states. South Dakota’s legal age for sports betting is 21 and older. Despite this, many men in our school have found ways around the restrictions.

Most online or mobile betting apps let bettors place money on parlays that they create, which are a series of individual bets, known as legs, that can exponentially increase the money you put in. For example, on PrizePicks, a two leg parlay would triple a bettor’s money, a three leg parlay would five times a bettor’s money, a four leg parlay ten times, all the way up to a six leg parlay which would be 25 times a bettor’s money.

With real money on the line, tensions are bound to flare. A current trend on TikTok is creating a “ban list,” or a list of players or teams the bettor will not bet on again because they messed up their parlay. Creators on TikTok will update their ban list multiple times a week, often with tears in their eyes as they recite how different players took away their money.

What if you could save an animal’s life? That may sound like those cheesy, sad dog

What if you could save an animal’s life? That may sound like those cheesy, sad dog commercials’ opening line, but it is not as ridiculous as you think. Thousands of animals are put into shelters or humane societies each year. The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society helps to care for animals and make sure they get all the attention they deserve (and more). With the support of volunteers, donations and a long list of potential adopters, the nonprofit located just outside of Sioux Falls is a hot spot for animal rescue.

The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society does approximately 8,000 intakes each year. Their rate of income and adoption is about 50% each month. They work very closely with Animal Control, ensuring all animals are safe for the time being. Many of these animals are from families who are unable to continue supporting them and others are strays found on the streets or taken from their homes. When it is after hours, one can bring an animal to the overnight intake area, which has all the necessary items for the rest of the animals’ night. All one needs to do is fill out the form and set the animal up in one of the safe kennels. Then, at 4 a.m., when the first of the staff comes in for the day, the animals are found and put in a more suitable temporary shelter. At max capacity, The Humane Society can hold 600 animals. Especially in the summer, this number gets pushed. Currently, numbers are very low.

Adopting an animal is important for several reasons. Without time at the shelter, an animal would likely be dead. Breeders can be costly, as well as dangerous and the overproduction of pets is at an all-time high. Supporting the shelter supports the community. Not everyone needs to adopt and it is okay to purchase new puppies or kitties. If one chooses to purchase new animals, they should put research into where the animals are from and try not to support unethical businesses. However, if one has the resources, availability and ability to care for an animal needing rescue, why shouldn’t they? How could one say no to a face like Roo’s?

If you are looking to adopt, the process is very simple. Simply fill out a one-page application with basic information to help match you with the best-fit pet. Required alongside the application is photo identification and proof of home address. Typical costs for adoptable pets are; $120 for adult dogs, adult cats are by choice, kittens are $85 and puppies are between $300-$400 depending on breed. “Our adoption prices are fairly low compared to what goes into the animals,” said a secretary. Due to the simplicity of the process, you can leave with a pet in 30 minutes.

First is the cat room. A cat’s average stay is about 11 to 12 days. The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society also partners with the Cattitude Cafe. All of the cats living at the Cattitude Cafe are from the shelter and utilize the same process of adoption. However, the Cattitude Cafe is more lenient on how many days one can wait to get the animal after adoption. At the Humane Society, it is within the day.

Next is the small animal room, which includes anything that is not a dog or cat. Primarily this room is home to guinea pigs and rabbits. “A lot of people think that guinea pigs and rabbits are starter pets, they absolutely are not,” said Taylor Kain, one of the front office staff at the Humane Society. These animals need a friend, a spacious living area and a maximum of 20 hours a day to be awake. Small animals also live at the Eastside Pet Smart, so people can see them in a pet store and then choose to adopt them.

The veterinary staff is an important part of the inner workings of the shelter. A majority of their work is neutering and spaying. Due to a lot of the animals being strays, illnesses or injuries have to be treated. One of the most widespread issues they face is kennel cough or upper respiratory infection, which is highly contagious and common among dogs and cats respectively. The vets bring them through treatment and maintain medications with their care. “I think the most positive part is just literally transforming that animal’s life and getting them from a place where they weren’t doing good to getting them healthy and to a good home,” said Rayleigh Johnson, who is on the veterinary staff. However, limited treatment can be tricky. Vets often cannot diagnose severe issues and have to send them out to other services.

Humane officers do everything from checking the well-being of animals, catching strays, setting live traps and setting ordinances for counties. Their dispatch is from law enforcement of their respective county and some surrounding areas. Even though the hours of the career may not be ideal, the reward of the joy of reconciliation is worth it. If one does come across a stray, call law enforcement or the humane society during open hours. The officer will then collect the animal. “Keep in mind that animals are unpredictable. Everybody will open their door for an animal or [let the animal] jump in your car, but that can be dangerous if you’re not familiar with the animal. Be cautious of being bit,” said Elliott Mcconnel, a humane officer on staff.

With graduation approaching, it is time for many LHS juniors to step into the roles soon to be left by the seniors. One of the most important responsibilities is the Student Council and the leadership positions attached to it. LHS recently held elections for the new Student Council openings with eight freshmen, three sophomores and four new junior representatives. However, this is not the only Student Council election happening recently. Along with the new members voted on by the student body, the council also had a private election to decide on the new STUCO president and vice president.

Replacing the current president Arthur Tao will be Griffin Etrheim and replacing Falco Gerling as vice president will be Lucas Hiatt. After joining the council freshman year, Etrheim hopes that his new position will help him to contribute to the school and the council in as many ways as possible.

“Since my freshman year there’s been a bunch of upperclassmen that were on student council who I looked up to, and I kind of wanted to follow their footsteps,” said Etrheim.

The process of becoming president takes time and involves a variety of student council meetings and an election. To maintain the position, members of the council must be nominated by other members and present a speech to the group, followed by a vote to determine the new president and vice president.

“To be honest I didn’t expect to be president a while back but I had a lot of people encourage me to run. I figure being president is the best way for me to contribute to all parts of the student council,” said Etrheim. Besides being a prominent member of the council, Etrheim is also a member of English, Math and Science NHS. He also participates in track and field and Y-ball. These activities prove Etrheim’s dedication to the school, he looks forward to participating and helping even more with school events.

“I’m really excited for homecoming… It’s the one time when basically everybody comes together to support the school, and next year I’ll get to lead a lot more of it,” said Etrheim.

In the coming year, Etrheim and the council members have hopes to get even more involved in LHS as well as outside the community.

“I’m also hoping we can get the council more involved with other organizations at Lincoln and what they run. We have a bigger reach than most clubs at our school, and I think we should take advantage of that and help them out,” said Etrheim.

Overall, Etrheim and the council hope to expand and reach as many students as possible and increase student pride by getting people more engaged in the school.

“I would like to increase the number of students and student groups that get involved in activities this year,” said council adviser Jennifer DuBois.

Over his time at LHS, Etrheim has shown immense amounts of LHS spirit and many of the qualities that are needed of a leader. With the many responsibilities that come with a role like this, the council must elect someone who can be trusted to make decisions and serve as a good role model throughout the school.

“I’m hoping I can start new traditions, improve the old ones and hopefully get the student section back to what it was my freshman and sophomore years,” said Etrheim.

“Griffin is patient, a good listener, well-organized and a goal-oriented young man,” said DuBois.

Despite the time and effort the role takes, Etrheim is looking forward to the opportunity to leave a mark on LHS and incorporate his ideas into the school. He hopes to keep LHS running smoothly and improve the school in any way he can.

DuBois is looking to increase organization and planning throughout the next school year and continue to try and get more kids involved. Along with this, she hopes to increase pride and spirit throughout the school. She believes that Etrheim is a great fit for this role and knows he will do his best to support and improve LHS.

“He truly wants what is best for this council and LHS as a whole. I feel the other new leaders on our student council have this same passion,” said Dubois.

Although Etrheim’s role is important, the student council not only depends on a president, as there are numerous other roles held within the council. The success of the council also relies on all of its other members and includes numerous other positions held by members. These positions were applied to and voted on by the other members of the council. These other roles help with more specific tasks such as school dances as well as the organization of the council and LHS activities. Each of these positions requires a much more specific skill set, and all members greatly contribute to the success of the student body and the school.

Although the council has to say goodbye to the senior members, it is in fully capable hands with the remaining members, and new president. Etrheim has big hopes for the year to come and is ready to become a leader and role model for the students.

The Statue of David is the centerpiece of Fawick Park, along the Big Sioux River on the edge of downtown. In the early 1970s, the Statue of David was donated to the city by Thomas Fawick and has since brought some controversy over the nudity it brings to the downtown area. Despite the controversy, the replica of Michelangelo’s Statue is a defining quirk of the downtown area and gives purpose to an otherwise bare area surrounding the Big Sioux River.

The Orpheum theater has been preserved for over a century on the north end of Phillips Avenue. Up until its purchase by the Sioux Falls Community Playhouse in 1954, it was primarily a discount theater. However, nowadays the Orpheum hosts live performances: mainly plays and musicals. The theater is also often occupied by many performing arts organizations. The Orpheum holds a full century of Sioux Falls’ performing arts history and is the oldest standing theater in the city.

The time has come; it is the season of senior assassin, a competitive sport played by the senior class of LHS. Every team has a common goal: to locate their target and “assassinate” them with their water weapon of choice. The last team standing will win the desirable pot of cash. Cover can be taken in the form of pool floaties or goggles, so the seniors will be looking very stylish for the duration of the battle. Everyone must sleep with one eye open on purge days, as your floaties or goggles will not keep you dry for these twenty-four hours. Good luck, and watch your back… let’s meet the teams!

1. “Turner, he doesn’t have good aim.”

2. “I’d probably say Bentley is a good strength for our team.”

3. “Six and a half.”

4. “Bentley just doesn’t care.”

1. “Falco Gerling, because he’s Falco Gerling.”

2. “Me, obviously. Because I’m the most versatile.”

3. “10.”

4. “I’m able to get around the town and eliminate opponents.”

1. “Hakim; he doesn’t have a car or any way to catch anybody.”

2. “Me, because I have a car.”

3. “Like an eight.”

4. “Me. I’m the strength.”

1. “Probably me, because I have a broken toe.”

2. “Ella Ready, because she’s fast and I know that she’ll carry our team.”

3. “An eight out of 10.”

4. “I only go to work pretty much, so unless everyone decides to follow me to work, I think that they won’t be able to get me.”

1. “Probably me, we talked about this a lot and we think I’m gonna get out first.”

2. “Gary, because he doesn’t get out much. He said he’s just gonna go home and play Xbox, so he’s gonna lead us.”

3. “A nine point eight, I think we’ll come in second to Collin Murra’s team.”

4. “I feel like I’m gonna be able to know where a lot of people are.”

1. “Haylee Knutson; I just think she gets distracted really easily, and then someone is just going to come sneak attack her.”

2. “Ahna Walling, because she always has good ideas, and she’s kind of quiet, so it’s going to end up being in our favor.”

3. “Eight.”

4. “Being able to be organized and know where people are.”

3. “A nine.”

4. “We’ll see.”

1. “Ashleigh, cause I feel like people could easily catch her lackin’.”

2. “I feel like Madi is pretty aggressive.”

3. “I gotta say 10.”

4. “Ian; he’s him.”

1. “Jack Osterloo, because it’s Jack Osterloo. He works at [redacted].”

2. “Me or Taylor Quinn because we know the most people.”

1. “Me. I would say at the moment I’m the least locked in.”

2. “Connor, he has the will to try as hard as he can.”

3. “A solid nine.”

4. “We are dedicated to find [our target] and do whatever we need to do.”

1. “Logan. He’s injured right now, hurt his ankle.”

2. “Me, ‘cause I can aim good.”

3. “Eight point six.”

4. “Good aim.”

Tattoos are an exceedingly controversial topic; however, from adolescents to adults, the subject’s popularity is widely increasing in the modern day world. Certain designs, markings and locations can symbolize a person’s cultural or spiritual identity, a connection or bond between friends and family or an aesthetic creation of their life. A majority of upperclassmen at LHS have obtained a tattoo in the past year. Let’s take a look at LHS students’ tattoo creations and their significance.

Connor Sergeant, 12

Last fall, Sergeant and one of his closest friends got matching tattoos at a local tattoo parlor, Permanent Addictions. On his forearm, he received a cover of a book from “Unveiling, Destiny 2.”

“To me it means a handful of different things, but in summary, it's basically about creation and purpose. Kind of to say that the reason we exist is because we deserve to exist; if we didn't exist we wouldn't deserve to exist,” said Sergeant.

Dylan Bowden, 12

To celebrate Bowden’s 18th birthday, she received two tattoos in California at a tattoo shop near the oceanside. She received two stars on her shoulder because she has a fondness for stars and a mandala moon with a rose.

“I love the moon and the rose because it represents my mom’s first name and my middle name,” said Bowden.

Finnley Johnson, 12

Precisely three weeks ago, Johnson arrived at the Heart Tattoo shop located in Sioux Falls, SD. On her upper thigh displays the angel numbers “444.”

“‘444’ are the angel numbers for divine protection, so I feel safe in my day to day life,” said Johnson.

Xara Bennett, 12 Electric Crayon.

In her lifetime, Bennett has acquired 14 tattoos: five tattoos on her hand, six tattoos on her lower half and one tattoo on her wrist, side and chest. Out of all 14 tattoos, one of them was done professionally at The

“I simply get tattoos because they are cute and art is beautiful. The only tattoos that actually have meaning on my body are my “Love Yourz” tattoo because it is my favorite J. Cole song and my semicolon butterfly because it is a symbol for hope and resilience for those who have attempted suicide,” said Bennett.

LHS produces some of the most outstanding athletes, and this year’s long list of college commits reflects the quality that comes out of our school. As we say goodbye to the seniors, the programs on which these students have made their mark will be greatly impacted. This year, the LHS athletics department is losing many athletes who have been huge factors in the success of each team. Let us meet four of the finest senior athletes at LHS who are stepping up to the collegiate level.

Becoming a D1 athlete is just one more accomplishment that senior football player Jack Smith can add to his long list of achievements.

Smith is committed to play football at SDSU in the fall, where he plans to major in mechanical engineering. Smith’s stellar football resume consists of being named 2023-24 Gatorade player of the year, holding various school and state records and helping to lead his team to victory at the 2023 State championship after an undefeated season. Outside of football, Smith was also a varsity starter for the LHS basketball team this year, has consistently played Legion baseball and holds the LHS track and field javelin school record. While these records are impressive on paper, they also hold memories Smith will always look back on.

“One of my favorite memories is when I broke the record for most receptions and receiving yards in a single game,” said Smith.

As he heads off to Brookings this year, Smith will be leaving behind more than just records, but also the experience of playing football with his lifelong best friends. Some of his LHS teammates include friends he has been playing with since he was in elementary school. While playing with a completely new team for the first time in a while will be an adjustment, Smith is always eager for a chance to become an even better athlete.

“I’m just looking forward to the new opportunities that will be given to me and the chance to play at the highest level,” said Smith.

Returning as a two-time state champ this year, LHS softball player Norah Christiansen has one last mark to make before she leaves to play at the collegiate level.

Playing as a jackrabbit has always been a goal for Smith, ever since he was little. This goal sparked because he wanted to carry on his family name at the school; both his parents graduated from SDSU, as well as his grandparents and great-grandpa. However, Smith will be the first of them to play a sport there. After making this his goal, Smith knew that reaching it would not be easy to achieve. If anyone knows Smith at all, they know that when he has an objective, he will put in the necessary work to get the job done, no matter how difficult it may be.

Christiansen will be furthering her softball career at Augustana University, where she plans to major in exercise science and human biology. Along with softball, Christiansen balances competing in track and field during the spring; last year, she placed 7th in shot put at the 2023 state track meet. As she enters her final softball season here at LHS, Christiansen and her team are aiming for a third State championship. Even so, Christiansen still finds herself looking back on that first championship from sophomore year as one of her most memorable moments.

“We were playing Harrisburg and were down the first half of the game,” said Christiansen. “I did not think we were going to pull through, but one hit after another, we came back and won.”

For Christiansen, the recruiting process was not as simple as some might think; she found it to be stressful and time-consuming. She put a lot of effort and pressure on herself to ensure that she was being noticed by coaches and that she was always performing to her best ability. However, throughout the process, Christiansen learned that being a desirable athlete involves more than just impressive performances.

“I realized that skill is not the main thing coaches are looking for,” said Christiansen. “It's how you react and how good of a teammate you are.” After committing to Augie, Christiansen knows all the hard work was worth it because softball has taught her not only what it is like to be a winner, but also how to have a strong work ethic and how to be the best teammate. Even though she is excited to play with her future teammates and learn from the older girls, the LHS softball program will forever hold a special place in Christiansen’s heart.

“The culture I have made with the girls on the team is something you can never forget,” said Christiansen. “We are good athletes but we are also great people.”

“The recruiting process was very long and stressful, but it’s worth the struggle,” said Smith. “It’s important to always bet on yourself and keep working as hard as you can because success doesn’t come easy.”

Going from a Patriot to a Wolf, senior soccer player Ella Ready is “Ready” for a new challenge as she takes her skills to the next level.

This upcoming fall, Ready will be playing soccer at Northern State University, and also majoring in either biology or nursing. It must have been in an instant connection when Ready first visited NSU because the NSU coach was the first to reach out to her. By the end of her recruitment process, Ready was debating between two schools. Taking into consideration that her family would still be able to watch her play and the distinctiveness of the program, Ready decided that NSU was the best choice for her.

“I ultimately chose Northern because of the great program that the newer coach was building, the coach’s coaching style and the facilities,” said Ready.

The new coach is not the only part about NSU that Ready is excited for; playing with a new group of girls is a great opportunity for Ready to advance her abilities. Nonetheless, Ready has not fully processed the fact that the girls she has played with since freshman year will not be there by her side.

“Our team had pretty good chemistry on and off the field, and I’m very appreciative that Lincoln soccer has brought me my closest friends,” said Ready.

Learning to be a good teammate, as well as being a good friend are both qualities that Ready has gained from her soccer experience. In addition to building relationships with her teammates, soccer has taught her how to deal with wins and loses.

While the girls this last year had to deal with a tough loss in the semifinals for the State championship, this loss did not take away from their great season. Ready knows that the losses do not reflect the hard work she puts in, instead they just make her work even harder.

“You should always keep working and give your full effort into everything you do,” said Ready. “To get to the college level you have to work outside of practices, lifting, extra touches, anything that will make you better and possibly give you an edge over someone else.”

After starting to play tennis at LHS as a seventh grader, senior Rocky McKenzie is not ready to end his career just yet.

McKenzie is committed to play tennis at Creighton University where he will likely study pre-med. McKenzie has been training for tennis ever since he was very young. This dedication and time put towards his training is what led McKenzie to play varsity starting in middle school. Since he has been a part of the LHS team for so long, this year will not be an easy goodbye. Spending time with his teammates, like at team meals, are some of the most memorable moments from his overall experience.

“I will miss the guys on the team the most,” said McKenzie. “These are guys that I have known since I was very little and we have been playing together for years. It’s really going to be tough to move on from the fun times we have while playing here.”

As well as making countless memories with his teammates, his team has also proven themselves to be the superior team of the state. The LHS tennis team has been on a winning streak for the State championship since 2014, with McKenzie being there for four of them. Even though becoming a part of a new team can be challenging, this change does not mean that McKenzie is not excited about what is to come in the future. He is very confident that his new team at Creighton will provide him with the support he needs to be successful.

“I am most looking forward to being a part of a team that is young and excited to play for a coach that really wants to win,” said McKenzie.

Pursuing a sport in college takes hard work and commitment; however, McKenzie understands that a person’s love for their sport is the most important part to achieving success. McKenzie plays tennis because he truly loves it, and was a state champion last year. This year, McKenzie will return to his last high school season ready to have a good time.

“Worrying about a college decision can take away some of the joy of playing and can give you unnecessary stress,” said McKenzie. “Just go have

fun and everything will work out.”

It is not a coincidence that the year LHS produced a State champion was also one of the most successful years for the LHS wrestling team as a whole. Mark Ernster, head coach of the LHS wrestling team, started coaching in 2009 and joined forces with current assistant coach Mike Long in 2012. Together, Ernster and Long have grown the LHS wrestling program from the ground up and have no plan on stopping anytime soon.

Long, who is in charge of developing the workouts and facilitating practices, completes every workout that he creates and sometimes even participates in the conditioning with the team members. During grueling practices with what seems like endless sprints and live wrestling, it is easy to want to give up. That is, until Coach Long starts running faster, punching out more pushups and wrestling with an intensity that is hard to match. At that point one’s thoughts go from feeling sorry for oneself to determination fueled by a desire to not get embarrassed by an “old man.” Coach Ernster and Long go further than just coaching, they set an example for their wrestlers.

Williams was one of six seniors on the wrestling team this year, four of which had been practicing together since seventh grade. All of them had high levels of achievement, with three out of the four of them placing in the State tournament their senior year. This group of seniors held each other accountable throughout their high school careers regardless of challenges such as losses or injuries. This has no doubt resulted in a higher standard of wrestling than if they hadn’t been together.

“I think elite wrestlers bring everyone else up around them… this year was a perfect example where everyone just kinda fed off of everyone and got better,” said Ernster. This group of seniors, however, were not the only ones elevating the level of wrestling at LHS this year. There are also numerous volunteer coaches that have come in to help teach throughout the years. The volunteer coaches, mostly made up of LHS alumni, come to practice strictly for the benefit of LHS’s current wrestlers. This year Coach Colin, Drake Bachmeier and Tae Ellenbecker were volunteer coaches that were involved in practice almost every day. Ellenbecker, who was state runner-up in 2022, acted as an especially outstanding role model for the team. He provided an example of what one can achieve by working hard and buying into what the coaches teach.

Spinsters was an extraordinary dance for all students, specifically because every school attended. Founded by EmBe, the event was held at The District, and it was meant to be more casual rather than formal. In addition, another unique difference about this dance was the girls asked the guy to go to the dance. This is because the dance started in the 1930s back when girls would typically ask guys to the dance, compared to our modern society where typically the guy asks the girl, this would be a fun old-school tradition to bring back that would switch the roles that the world has put in place.

Williams’ commitment to the LHS wrestling team has made a statement for what LHS wrestling can look like, a statement that now sets the standard for up-and-coming wrestlers. Yusuf Mire, an LHS freshman and first year wrestler summed up Williams’ victory very well.

Spinsters was also a fundraiser where the profits would go to serving women in the community. Typically, Spinsters raised a great amount of money each year because every school attended. The cost ranged each year from $20-$40 depending on whether you went alone or were a couple. Spinsters was also seen as a less formal dance. It was more casual, and typically people would wear more fun clothes rather than the standard formal clothing for dances. This would be a nice switch up compared to most dances, as it allows people to express themselves more with what they wear to this dance. This also benefits students who can’t afford to buy a fancy

dress or suit; they can just wear their everyday clothing. for to attend this event towards the end of the school year.

Bringing this event back would be a huge success, and many students would likely participate since every school would be attending. This would allow large amounts of money to be raised for funding, which could go to a good cause. Since spinsters is towards the end of the year, it would allow students who can’t attend prom for them

The reason for Spinsters being discontinued in 2021 was because Embe is hoping to reach new goals and focus on serving the community in other ways, according to Sophie Heinemann from KELOLAND News. Spinsters has a huge legacy, and it’s unfortunate that it ended abruptly. While EmBe may no longer sponsor the Spinsters program, there could still be other ways funding could occur. Since every school would attend, each school could have a fundraiser for the Spinsters dance after the

winter formal dance.

Spinsters has a very big legacy and had an impact on many students. Bringing it back would allow for a dance during the winter for those who are not seniors who can’t attend prom. If the high schools come together and fundraise, Spinsters could come back and allow many wonderful memories to be made.

Everything serves as a reminder of those who have passed away from their loved ones. My life has been permanently altered since losing my grandma, who was ingrained into every aspect of my life. My attempts to rediscover a “new normal,” have proven futile time and time again, because life will never be “normal” without her. Instead, I aim to find a way to navigate grief by honoring my grandma’s legacy, and striving to mirror her generosity, kindness and unconditional love. Unfortunately, while loving her is a gift I am grateful for, it does not change the fact that she is gone.

Grief is a see-saw, a balancing act between the seemingly endless dark abyss of loss and the light from memories. Loss encompasses both aspects, and it is impossible to live with the memories without living with the pain of loss. Each memory is a reminder that I will never see, hear and hug her again, that her death is real and permanent. Yet, in spite of the darkness loss instigates, the memories I have with her, her everlasting legacy and new memories shared with me continue to guide me through the darkness. At times of doubt and struggle, I believe she leaves signs for me. Fortunately, this is not a unique experience for my family and me. Several LHS students share similar experiences, feelings of hope in the midst of the darkness grief creates in the form of signs their loved ones have left them.

“During COVID, I was struggling with not being able to see anyone. One day I had sat outside to get some fresh air and a dragonfly had perched on my hand. At first I assumed that it might have hurt its wing, but upon further inspection it seemed it simply wanted to lay on my hand. The dragonfly and I had stayed like that for two hours simply sitting there together. It helped ease my loneliness and brought some joy to me. I believe my uncle simply wanted to be there with me and offer up his comfort,” said an anonymous LHS student.

She had terrible health issues, but even with this obstacle, she treated us like her own. Up until her death, she always put us first, even when we watched her take her last breath in the ICU. Shopping can feel overwhelming, especially online shopping. There are new clothing trends, websites and apps almost every day. The most recent and popular online shopping app, Temu, has had a hold of online shoppers these days. This is most likely due to the fact that Temu gives out coupons every time the app is opened. The new app is called Temu. Many believe that it is just like Shein, with cheap prices and bad quality. We are here to give out honest reviews of their products.

One disadvantage of Temu is that it can take a while to receive your package. In my experience, if you order a small number of goods, your package will come sooner. On the other hand, if you order an abundance of items, like I did, it can take up to two weeks or more to get to your doorstep. I received one of the items I ordered within a few days then after about two weeks everything else came together.

When I received my package everything was wrapped individually and the packaging had a cheap smell to it. I began to worry that maybe Temu was not “all that”. As I opened the packages I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the clothes that I received. The clothes were made of quality fabric, along with the swimsuits. I immediately threw the clothes in the washer/dryer so that I could test if they would shrink. They did not. I then began to open the earrings, necklaces, candles, scrapbooks and gadgets I had received and had nothing to complain about with the product. The jewelry will eventually rust like any other jewelry that is bought from Target or Lovisa. I also decided to buy a mini steamer/ iron for when I go off to college. It plugs into the wall with a little water input spot on the top. I would not buy that product again. It gets really hot but the water comes out more like spray not steam. Overall, my package was worth the wait for the price of the items.

While Caroline ordered mostly clothes, I went a different route and ordered a little kitchen and home gadgets. My favorite purchase by far was a butter sprayer where I can store my infused butter. I assumed it would break easily, but it has been through the dishwasher a couple of times and has had no problems with deformation or melting that might come with cheap plastic. Another purchase that was totally worth it was the $2 microfiber towels embroidered with lettering used to take off my makeup. They have not been altered in the washing machine and are almost identical to the ones my mom got from Target for $14. The biggest advantage to shopping on Temu are the coupons they give you when you go to check out. When I was about to pay it brought me to a page that allowed me to pick 5 items for one cent. I was able to get a couple of jewelry organizers and cotton pad holders for my bathroom. Some of the deals seem too good to be true but when my package came it was all great quality. I think ordering clothes causes your package to take longer to arrive but since I just ordered home goods, my package only took four days.

Do not shop for an item before checking Temu’s price first. There are a few items that I would not trust Temu for but for the most part, their quality in our experience has been worth the price. Everyone’s experience will probably be slightly different, but considering our reviews, we would say that Temu is a reputable online shopping app.

Comparable to her predecessors, she was orphaned at the young age of 10. Before this event, life was no walk in the park for this girl. The first of the eight homes she lived in during her younger years was behind a KFC and the malodorous fumes took a toll on her developing brain. It is unknown if it was this or the fact that she has had numerous concussions that caused the short-term memory she suffered from. Most of these involved accidents that occurred while skiing, but she also had a 75-pound volleyball pole dropped on her head in the eighth grade. Most recently, she fell on her head when going down a secret passageway at the notoriously dangerous Great Bear, resulting in her ninth concussion.

The turmoil of this girl’s life does not end at black diamonds. In what can only be described as an act of pure jealousy of her powers, she was hit in the McDonald’s parking lot and again on the way to school. In a failed attempt to undo harm to her, scalding hot chicken noodle soup was served to her and when she inevitably burned her hand on the bowl, she dropped it. The horrific accident resulted in second-degree burns.

This plague of envy started shortly after the accident that changed her life. At the summer camp she had attended all her life, she was bit by a baby rattlesnake. After a tortuous stay in the hospital (it was 18 hours), nothing was the same. Veins that once gave a blue hue to her skin now appeared neon green. Her upper canines grew sharper and longer, despite them being growing since middle school. No amount of lotion could cure the scaly, dry feel of her skin. Worst of all, the hard work that the once 18-month-old put in was dissipating as the impulse to slither grew stronger than that of walking.

As a distance runner and swimmer, I would say I am deserving of the title student-athlete, which is a role I thoroughly love from the depths of my heart. A large majority of students at LHS also associate with this title, but this is my personal experience as a student-athlete.

Morning practice. Two words that have never pleased my ears more. Waking up early allows me to be more productive throughout the day. Yes, I am exhausted the rest of the day but that is what caffeine is for. There is nothing I enjoy more than jumping into a freezing pool at 5:30 in the morning. It really helps me wake up. Cold water also helps close pores, which makes up for the dead hair and dry skin that swimming gives me. The thought of still getting to go to school after practice is what gets me through the burning shoulders and legs I feel while swimming. But pain just means I am working hard, right?

When I have evening practice, for either swimming or running, I go to school, go to practice, take a shower, eat supper, pack everything I need for the next day, spend some time scrolling on my phone then finally start on homework at 11 p.m.. Do not worry though; this gives me plenty of time to do assignments for my advanced classes. I also only need a couple of hours of sleep each night to function through the long days, which is why my student-athlete schedule is perfect for me. When I do not have practice after school, I have too much time to myself; it is so overwhelming.

Tapering: the practice of reducing exercise in the days just before an important competition. Also known as my least favorite part of being an athlete. The only way to get faster at meets is to go faster and harder at practice, so having easier workouts is just a waste of time. I beg my coaches to stop doing taper but they just don’t listen to me. Does anyone actually like taper?

Of course, as I have made very clear, being a student-athlete is too easy, so why not pile three AP classes onto that? Also, to add a bit more of a challenge, I decided to do swimming, which is a yearround sport with a whole two months of break throughout the whole year, and overlaps the cross country and track seasons. I love challenging myself because it makes me a better person, so I am not complaining. Staying focused on the constant need to perform well academically and athletically is what distracts me from being trapped in my own thoughts and having an existential crisis. Oh how I love being a student-athlete.

This mixture was so disgustingly alpha, we threw up pheromones. Just like pain is beauty, pain is alpha, and we could feel the macho male power coursing through us as we curled 200 lbs and let out masculine roars. Suddenly our pecs grew and our abs flourished, and as a result, we got one step closer to becoming alphas.

Although we were teary-eyed at the thought of parting with our beloved graphic t-shirts, we did as ChatGPT commanded. Swapping our baggy cargo pants for neutral colored slacks, and Bob Ross with tight black, sleeve length button-downs, we adorned our gold chain drip and fancy watches. Finally, much like Cinderella, we donned some sleek sneakers and wide-framed sunglasses, asserting our dominance on the world.

To get rizz, we conducted a research experiment on what is the most alpha pickup line. In a survey of 50 high school students of the Sioux Falls School District, 50% stated that the following pickup line was alpha, with the other 50% stating that it was beta: “Math is so confusing, always about x and y but never about you and I.” Meanwhile, 70% stated the following was indeed very alpha: “Baby girl, did we use to go to school together? Because I swear we had chemistry.” According to our extremely official, scientific results, the chemistry line was obviously superior. So as we ventured out into the world, in our new alpha drip of course, we continuously dropped the chemistry pickup line in absolute randos. Thanks to our 70% success rate, we have officially found seven girlfriends (not counting our other side chicks): Alisha, Alex, Cassandra, Sylvia, Bethany and Cassie.
