The arrival of spring means the start of the final season of sports at LHS. Baseball, Track, Boys Tennis and Girls Golf all finally get to compete after their hard work in the off season. This spring season, the Pats will take the field, track, court and course to all compete to achieve the same goal of winning State.

Lincoln Track is well-known amongst teams throughout the city and state. As defending state champions for girls and boys combined and 2x State champions for the boys team, the pats have high expectations for this coming season. Emira Belhaj is a senior on the track team and has spent ample amounts of time with her teammates preparing for the season. “We got ready for the season by grinding in winter conditioning,” said Belhaj. As the season begins, the Pats look to run fast and far to achieve the goals they have set. “This season we really want to win as many meets as possible and to beat Brandon Valley,” said Belhaj. The LHS track team looks to defend their state title and add another one to the wall of trophies.

The LHS baseball team is eager to kick off their 2019 season. With a team full of returning players, the Pats have high hopes of excelling and going far into the State tournament. Nate Brecht, a senior at LHS, is excited to take the eld with his teammates after preparing with them in the off season. “We’ve been practicing. We have been hitting a lot because we want to score more runs this year,” said Brecht. The baseball team looks to start their season off in the beginning of April, weather permitting.

The LHS Boys Tennis team is known for how successful they are, winning the last ve State Championships. Each member of the team has various strengths and talents that adds to the accomplishments of the team. Rajul Giri is a junior on the team and he, along with his team, shares the same goals. “I individually want to win State and I also want the team to win state.” With loads of talent and hard work, the Tennis team looks to play hard and defend their state title.

Margaret Meierhenry The LHS Girls Golf team is ready to get onto the course to compete. Senior, Margaret Meierhenry, has been on the varsity team for ve years. As an experienced player, she looks forward to setting an example for the younger players on the team. “I want the team to continuously get better as the season goes on. As the majority of the team is underclassmen, I want us to see our improvement as the underclassmen continue to improve,” said Meierhenry Despite having a young team, the girls still have the same goal of making it to State. “Our goal this year is to all individually improve, to help the entirety of our team score and hopefully improve enough to be in the upper half in the State tournament,” said Meierhenry. With high goals and a solid roster, the Girls Golf team is looking to achieve their goals and compete to the best of their ability. PHOTOS BY RILEY RASMUSSEN

REWIND, REPLAY REVIEW

My name is Chloe Crissman and I am a senior at LHS. The last four years have been nothing short of, well for lack of a better word, interesting. I have learned a lot about myself and who I want to be, and it is finally time I shared my knowledge with underclassman who may need a few tips on surviving high school. The first thing I would like to say is: high school is not easy. Your grades actually do matter, as obvious as that may seem. Not only are classes hard but so is navigating the hallways. I cannot tell you how many times I have gotten trapped in the middle of the hallway when I needed to turn left. When that happens, just take a deep breath and accept the fact that you are not turning left. You are going to have to follow the herd and perhaps be late to your class. Another difficult part of high school is staying true to who you are. Yes, this is cliche, but it is crucial to making it out of high school alive. Let me explain. Sure, you can just “fit in” and do what everyone else around you is doing. You could just stick to the same basic outfits every week because God forbid you make a statement. Don’t worry, I understand. Six passing periods of people staring at you in the hallway can get tough, but you get used to it. Part of making it out of high school alive is actually living, so wear what you want, hang out with who you want and just be yourself, people are going to talk about you anyway ;). When it comes to friends, some will stay, and some will go. Do not take it personally if you drift apart from some people. It is just part of life, not everyone is a piece of your puzzle. However, when you do find people who fit the puzzle, do not let them go. Appreciate your friends and go out of your way to make sure they know how much they mean to you. The little things do matter. It is okay if it is not always reciprocated; people show love in different ways. Well, I guess that is all of the advice I have to give. Just remember when it comes to the next four years of your life, do not take it for granted. While these next four years seem like forever, they are merely a blip in the grand scheme of your life, yet they shape who you are. Have fun, be nice to underclassmen and as always, go Pats. XOXO, Chloe Crissman

Beauty

PHOTOS PROVIDED BY MICHAEL GEORGE BROWN (MGB PHOTOGRAPHY)

by Taylor Ericson The enchanting story of “Beauty and the Beast” has been extremely popular dating all the way back to 1740 when French author Gabrielle-Suzanne de Villeneuve wrote the book entitled “La Belle et La Bête”. This story has since been told through movies, TV series and

musicals around the world. This fairytale was recreated by LHS students for this year’s musical and the results were truly magical. The preparation for the musical began in February and continued up until the first night of the show, April 12. This period of preparation consisted of auditions, the building of the set,

rehearsal for both the musicians and cast members and even a “Be Our Guest Breakfast” for children to experience a real-life fairytale here at LHS. The countless hours of development were proven to be worthwhile the moment the first show started. The musical followed the traditional story of the “Beauty and the Beast,” including the

infamous Belle played by junior Ramsey Folkerts as well as the ferocious Beast played by junior Johnathan Smith. There were two main settings that were presented throughout the musical: Beast’s castle and the village where Belle lives. Both sets contained handmade props that helped to intensify the show. The cast told the story through

their breathtaking acting along with their equally perplexing singing and dancing. The actors and actresses were not the only figures that made the show astonishing, as they were accompanied by members of the LHS orchestra, who provided beautiful music that helped to set the mood and tell the story. Every individual that was

involved in the musical contributed in their own unique way, no matter their role. The singers, dancers, director, tech crew and instrumentalists alike combined their different talents to put on an incredible show and prove, contrary to popular belief, that one could indeed love a Beast.

identity identity

by Jaida Sorensen

Now, I know what you are thinking. This is just another story about being your true self. Blah. Blah. Blah. But that is actually not what this is about; I am here to explain how and why nding your identity in high school is quite foolish. Everyone wants to dene themselves, but high school is not the best place to do it. Finding your identity is a lot more than just being an athlete, a singer or an AP scholar. It is about what you, as a person, can offer the world.

High school makes that task much more difficult than anyone could imagine. Often times, people judge before even knowing a person due to everyone else’s perceptions. In fact, according to stageoife.com, 66 percent of teenagers say that they feel most people do not see them for who they really are. The rst aspect of high school that I think about is reputation. Those who run down the halls have a reputation as the “weird” kid; whereas those who wear designer clothes are known as the “popular” kids. Meaning that if you are not in the “right” group, then it is

issue issue

shameful. In my experiences, I have noticed that in friend groups, they all talk and act the same. The same words, the same tone in their speech, the same walk. But this is not because they all grew up like that, but because someone in that group has impacted the group so much that the others replicate that personality. Don’t get me wrong though, I get it. I understand why being the same as another person is so compelling. But that does not help dene ourselves. I understand if you think none of this is true, but can you honestly say you

would go get ice cream with someone completely different than you? If, as you grow, you act the same way as you did in high school, then when you are an adult you will not be your actual self. Whoops, I said it. But it is true; teenagers are all about people-pleasing through status, rebellion and other’s opinions. Instead, it should not be about pleasing anyone at all; not your friends, family or teachers. Identity is about being who a person truly is. Make sure your identity is yours. When we are younger, we don’t necessarily care about what society thinks about us. I used to wear dresses and sandals on snowy days while the other kids were bundled up. It isn’t always easy to do the right thing. When faced with a situation where someone is treated unfairly, we find ourselves in the wrong or realize that we could be doing something to stop an event that is unethical, often we spend so much time thinking about what we could do that we never act.

While everyone would like to imagine that when we see something, we’ll say something, it doesn’t always happen. We are so horrible at anticipating what our emotions will be in future situations that when they occur, responding can be difficult. In fact, research from NYU states that most people tend not to act when they see a situation they

that it’s where my parents were born, where they’ve built a life for our family and where I’ve grown up my entire life. I felt a brief sense of shame for not relating to these seemingly cultured, cosmopolitan teens. There wasn’t a time during my New York endeavors that I didn’t wish I lived in place far away from the grass and cowboy boots and rows upon rows of corn, because if I did, I wouldn’t be asked this question over and over again. I envied their experiences, and ran out of responses to the same question that still makes me hesitate to answer. It’s important to note that this isn’t a criticism of anyone who lives outside of the Midwest, but rather a contrast of what you trade, and what you gain, for living in a place that seems destined for nothing but more rows upon rows of corn. I could do the same if

I lived in a place such as California. One isn’t necessarily better than the other. Towards the end of my trip, there was a statement from one of the guest speakers that has remained fixed in my mind ever since the 50 to 100 of us were packed into a small auditorium at Hearst Tower. “One day, you’ll be jumping off planes and getting tattoos and no one will care.” No one will care. I looked around the auditorium, but no one seemed as attentive to this statement as I was. In a room full of once strangers, that statement made us all familiar. Maybe some didn’t realize it, but after countless days of interrogating questions about where each of us was from, and perpetual panic about the limitations of our roots, that brief glimpse of promise elevated

these once meaningless questions to those of hunger: questions that needed to be answered proudly with the knowledge that, someday, the answer wouldn’t hold as much weight as it did today. Where you’re from assigns a unique responsibility to share your experiences, values and knowledge, because they are not always universal. But while people may not always want to listen, or may tend to overlook the power of perspective, a necessary aspect of personal accomplishment is to not only acknowledge what, specifically, separates you from the sea of California elite, but to recognize that, perhaps, the grass and cowboy boots and rows upon rows of corn are a major part of where you were yesterday, who you are today and where you’re headed tomorrow.

O

and maybe that assigns a certain responsibility to prove ourselves… to defend ourselves. I joked with a friend before I left that the people I was about to meet would think we still carry on the “horse and buggy” tradition our ancestors so proudly embraced. We laughed, but my prediction of what was to come wasn’t all that far off from reality. Perhaps the most difficult question was, “What do you do there?” Honestly, I didn’t know how to respond. I still don’t. The California elite stared at me, waiting for a response that was equivalent to their stories of city life and parties and spending nights on the beach that, as they put it, were “like, insane.” This whole “90210” inspired lifestyle was intimidating, and it was this question that made me question why I live in South Dakota, besides the fact

I sat there listening. 50 to 100 teenagers were there with me, all tiny specks in something much larger than we knew or wanted to admit. There’s something beautiful about growing up in the Midwest. Forget the stereotype that South Dakota is nothing but grass and cowboy boots and rows upon rows of corn, and forget all of the times you’ve had to explain where you live to those who consider this stereotype valid, or maybe even a representation of who you are as a person, who your family is, where you come from. When I visited New York last year for a summer camp, I met with other teens around my age (none of whom were from South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska or any

surrounding states) and found a common thread within our introductions to each other. The question “Where are you from?” was singlehandedly the epitome of conversation starters, and the embodiment of my frustration within the hours that followed my arrival at LaGuardia. It’s a common question that seems appropriate when you mix 50 to 100 strangers in one courtyard outside of the New York Cambria Hotel, but the extent of the question is what bothered me. I expected confused glances in response to my South Dakota ties, and I even anticipated the claws of California elite (see, stereotypes are everywhere) to rip apart any respect I had for my roots in the Rushmore State. It’s understandable, really. South Dakota doesn’t necessarily have the fast-paced lifestyle that bigger cities have,

Bill Nye will take over as LHS principal next year, when the school board was discussing other options, the chanting of “Bill, Bill, Bill, Bill” overtook all other debate. You’ve heard that Obama is a lizard, but did you know that Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken is a robot? LHS has now moved to a new grading system where you are given a grade of “liked” or “disliked” based on the teacher’s opinion of the student. Grimm hopes this will improve graduation rates. When Travis Aukerman doesn’t feel like teaching, his twin does it. Everyone talks about the pool in the LHS basement, but no one focuses on the fact that the pool has a slide and a hot tub (which is what’s really important). Mr. Grimm is actually Gordon Ramsay in disguise. Three freshmen were swept away in the flooding of the A-wing parking lot this last month. The AP Environmental Science classes are leading rescue efforts.

Wears shorts all year because it’s “cool”

The feen, aka the friend that feeds off of everything you own. This friend is often found lurking in your closet or fridge, usually searching for anything to leach on. Friends that feen are probably the most annoying type of friend because you could offer to buy them food, they’ll reject your offer and then when you get your food, they eat it all.

Mom/dad This type of friend is sweet and necessary; however, they can get annoying quick. Parents are great and all but hanging with friends is ideal to escape the tight grasp of parents. This friend is often found cleaning after everyone and making sure everyone is fed and okay.

Gets a tattoo as soon as they turn 18

Wears “Warwick Workout” T-shirt

Carries keys in pocket at all times

Is only cool if they have a Hydro Flask with a Dunder Mifflin sticker

Flirt The flirt is the type of friend that feeds off of attention. This friend has a permanent spot light on them at all times, or at least they like to think that they do. The flirt is often found with a crowd of people having the time of their lives.

Debbie downer This friend is like a cloudy sky that’s always raining on everyone’s parade. The Debbie downer is always negative and never gets excited. It is especially annoying when you have an exciting story to tell and they do not react in the way that you wanted. This friend is usually found commenting unnecessarily comments and creating a bad atmosphere for all.

Is insanely pale

Always has to b be l prepared for an avalanche
