CERAMICS clay department offers classes for
all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding and sculpture. Advanced students can fine tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-of-the-art equipment during our generous open studio hours.

Beginning students will develop fundamental throwing techniques while returning students refine their skills to create more complex forms. Be inspired by those around you and challenged by your personal goals. Teacher demonstrations are designed for multilevel students. Class fee includes one 25-pound bag of clay.
Whether your aim is functional or sculptural ceramics, learn the basic techniques of handbuilding as you work with slabs, coils and pinching to create virtually anything you can dream up. BEGINNING FIGURE SCULPTURE: THE PORTRAIT BUST
CERAMICS
(10 WEEKS) Explore sculpting the head and shoulders, known as “portrait bust.” Demonstrations will include various sculpting methods, mapping and measuring facial proportions, facial definition and various finishing techniques. Students will complete one or two half-sized portraits beginning with a self-portrait, using mirrors and black and white photographs. Learn basic portrait sculpting techniques or improve current skills. Wednesday 7-10pm

SCULPTURAL NARRATIVES IN CLAY (10 WEEKS) A narrative expresses oneself through a story. This class will help you develop your ideas and creative thinking process. Gathering your observations through writing, learn to translate your thoughts through making. For inspiration, the instructor will break down their process and show successful examples of the different forms narratives can take. All levels welcome.

Use handbuilding techniques to make functional work that tells your story. Learn new surface techniques such as mishima, sgraffito, monoprinting and transfers. Explore the pot’s ability to transcend function, becoming a canvas for your ideas. We will work with lowfire terra cotta and terra sigillata, ancient materials that have been telling stories throughout history.

THE STILL LIFE IN CLAY

Students will explore a step-by-step approach to body proportions, construction problem solving and internal armature, the planes of the figure, human expression and body gesture. There will be class discussions on surface treatment for sculpture. A model will be used as needed and fee collected in class. All levels welcome.
The significance of how objects or forms exist together is just as important as the way in which each was independently crafted. Creating a scenario or scene with multiples can give each piece its own personality or inform how they work alongside one another. This is not a class about function, but rather the play on shape and form.

HOME & GARDEN POTTERY (10 WEEKS)
To celebrate Lillstreet’s 40th anniversary and ArtReach’s 25th, help us design and install a mosaic to adorn the walls at Lillstreet. This collaborative project introduces beginners to mosaic making, which includes design and composition, materials and adhesives, cutting and layout and the grouting process. In addition, students will create a small project to take home. No prior art experience necessary. Material fee includes all materials and tools needed. A portion of the class fee will benefit ArtReach.

Print repeatable images on leatherhard clay tiles, vessels and sculptural forms. Learn relief, screenprint and paper lithography techniques that can be applied directly and indirectly to greenware. Transfer images, textures and patterns to your clay pieces using slips, stains and special “inks.” Most techniques can be adapted for earthenware. Explore and build on ideas of series and variation. Students will develop pieces that are related by surface treatment, form and embellishment, technique and theme, in order to delve more deeply into a particular area. Students can look to their older works for continuing refinement or create a new signature look.
SIMPLY SODA: BEGINNING SODA (10 WEEKS) Be prepared for flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results utilizing the distinct atmospheric qualities of the soda kiln. Weekly wheelthrowing or handbuilding demonstrations will increase your knowledge of more complex forms. Through the use of soda slips and glazes, the soda firing process becomes accessible and understandable. Participation in all stages of the process including some kiln loading, introduction to firing, and unloading outside of class time is required. ADVANCED TOPICS IN SODA FIRING: PAINT WITH FIRE (10 WEEKS) Analyze the critical steps necessary to create dynamic and inventive ceramic works utilizing the potter’s wheel. Explore the idea of “painting with fire” by employing the atmospheric firing process of Lillstreet’s urban soda kiln. Students will participate in all stages of the process including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time. Prerequisite: Two sessions of Simply Soda or instructor approval. (10 WEEKS) Working weekly from a nude model, students will take a methodical approach to sculpting the figure. Students may choose to sculpt a head, torso or full figure. Focus will be given to anatomy, body proportions, poses and gesture. Building techniques and observational skills will be emphasized. Kokeshi’s are handmade dolls from northern Japan. They are characterized by a simple, limbless trunk decorated in floral designs and an enlarged head with thin painted lines to define the face. Emphasis will be given to doll construction, surface treatment and your own creative touches. All levels welcome.
It is designed to transport you into the center of an artist's studio, complete with unique, handcrafted furnishings, and striking artwork. The flexible space can be easily arranged to accommodate any function, intimate or extravagant. FIRST-TIME GLASS BEADMAKING (5 WEEKS) Become comfortable with basic torch techniques while creating simple bead shapes with a variety of fundamental decorating styles. Shaping, heat control, color, use of tools, classroom equipment and studio safety will be covered. Classes will involve demonstrations, discussions, individual instruction and plenty of practice time. An overview of how to finish your beautiful beads will be discussed. A glass kit is recommended and available for purchase on the first day of class.

BEGINNING CHAINMAILLE
METALSMITHING & GLASS
(5 WEEK) This comprehensive course covers several basic weaves and tips for “speedweaving.” The Double Spiral, European 4-in-1, Byzantine, Japanese 12-in-2 and Jens Pind Linkage 3 are the five weaves demonstrated. Students will receive enough jump rings for 5 bracelets and full-color, step-by-step tutorials for each weave. Aluminum, copper and anodized aluminum will be used. Instructor will bring pliers to use in class.
BRACELETS: CUFFS, BANGLES AND LINKS (5 WEEKS)

Learn the basics of metalworking while focusing on the bracelet. Sawing, piercing, forming, texturing, soldering and finishing techniques will be demonstrated. A different style and construction of bracelet will be discussed each week. A material kit is recommended and available for purchase on the first day of class. Additional materials will be available for purchase. Open to beginners with no experience or those wishing to hone their skills.

ETCHING (5 WEEKS) Learn basic techniques for etching to create texture, patterns and images on metal. Experiment with different resists such as spray paint, paint pens, permanent ink stamp pads, PNP paper, nail polish and adhesive film. Etched plates may also be used to texture metal using the rolling mill. Surface treatments will be discussed. PNP paper and metal will be available for purchase. RESIN (10 WEEKS) Learn the basics of working with different epoxies and resins to add color to your pieces. Create domes, cabochons, hollow forms and bezels to be filled with resin. Experiment with mixing pigment, eye shadow, spices, pastel crayons, photographs, papers and found objects into the resin. Basic mold making techniques will be discussed. A material kit is recommended and available for purchase on the first day of class. Prerequisite: Beginning Metalsmithing or First-Time Jeweler. Tuesday 6:30–9:30pm

Bring them to class and we’ll get them incorporated into a piece of jewelry. We’ll investigate bezels, prongs, tabs and anything else we can come up with to get them to stay in place.
Experience the magic of wielding a hammer to coax metal into flowing lines and sensuous forms. Learn to create new shapes for your work not easily achieved by other techniques. Forge wire or rod into linear earrings, rings, or flatware. Foldform metal to create organic textures and threedimensional forms. Transform metal sheet into bracelets or even a teapot. The possibilities are endless.

CLOISSONÉ ENAMELING (5 WEEKS) Cloissoné is a style of enameling in which ground glass, made into a paste, is used to fill cells or cloisons, created by manipulating thin metal wires. Why buy them when you can make them! This workshop will focus on how to make ear wires and posts that are both traditional and unique. Learn how to make each pair symmetrical and comfortable. The use of a jig to make several pairs quickly along with other helpful tips will be discussed. Materials may be purchased from the instructor.
Create unique, handmade metal decorations for your garden or potted plants. Using copper and brass, learn to saw, texture and shape metal. Explore the fundamentals of drawing portraits and figures while working from a nude model. Weekly demonstrations and structured exercises will emphasize observation, proportion, measuring, anatomy, and seeing the figure and face as simply a matter of integrated shapes. From prehistoric cave paintings to contemporary art, people have been fascinated with illustrating animals. This technique-based class teaches methods on how to render the animal form and improve observational skills by drawing from mounted specimens. INTRODUCTION TO PAINTING TECHNIQUES (5 WEEKS) Refine and develop painting technique as you build on basic skills. Explore brush and pallet knife use, incorporate painting mediums and investigate the importance of a color plan.
Students will be introduced to techniques necessary to accurately render botanical subjects using graphite and watercolor. We will keep a sketchbook to record details and test techniques, then apply those skills to more considered and developed pieces. Learn the theory and practice of basic color concepts using acrylic paint. Value and its relationship to color lead to the development and understanding of monochromatic, analogous and complementary relationships. Course participants will learn how to mix colors, distinguish the additive and subtractive properties hues have in relation to one another and develop strategies to lighten and darken colors.
Paint with wax using pigments, damar crystals, various types of waxes and other ingredients to create multilayered, heavily textured paint on a variety of surfaces. Special brushes, tools, torches, heat guns and irons will be used. A supply list will be provided one week before class begins. All levels welcome. *Due to the nature of this medium, open studio is not available for students working with encaustic paints.
Work from a costumed model during two-week poses, with emphasis on observation and perceptual drawing and painting. One-onone instruction is catered to the individual student. Those with less experience will receive structured lessons and demonstrations, and more experienced students will be given continuous feedback. SILVERPOINT DRAWING (5 WEEKS) Most widely used during the Renaissance by masters such as Leonardo da Vinci and Albrecht Durer, silverpoint drawing is characterized by its delicacy of line and tone. While the technique remains virtually the same, today both abstract and representational artists can utilize the method of drawing with silver to create sensitive and elegant work. Using traditional materials, learn both the history of metalpoint and its application in our own work. Material list is available online.
(10 WEEKS) Like Manet we will learn the elements of painting directly in color from a still life. Emphasis will be placed on learning to see the form, value and edge relationships, developing all parts of the painting simultaneously and composing a picture. This course will explore a number of historical portrait painting techniques, introducing students to the practices of the Venetian School and Northern Renaissance. Individualized instruction supports students as they develop new skills and styles. Working from the nude model, poses are extended through multiple sessions providing students with experience and the opportunity to develop a more considered drawing or painting. Using oil paints as the medium, learn the foundation techniques and relationships needed to successfully paint wet-on-wet. Topics include the connection between shape, value and hue creating definition, drawing with a brush and strategies for painting wet into wet. It will liberate you from drawing outlines and filling them in with color. Students will paint from still life for the first five weeks and progress to portraiture with a live model.
The environment surrounding the figure becomes an experiment in the relationship between context and meaning. The persona of the model and the use of the figure can create a psychology whether symbolic, narrative or abstract. Discuss and analyze artists who use the figure to create a narrative or as a vehicle for abstraction as you develop work in the media of your choice.

Block printing is a global practice with a rich history, and provides many options for the beginning or advanced printer. Familiarize yourself with the tools and processes as you carve linoleum blocks to create imagery onto cloth and paper. Develop layered artworks, cloth with repeating patterns or create multiple fabric blanks with this easy method. Material fee includes two blocks. Students provide fabric, paper and additional blocks after the first class.
Fusible web adhesives can be used to “quick” appliqué or cut and paste your favorite fabrics. Learn to use machine embroidery to permanently fix layers of collaged fabric while adding texture and decorative elements. Bring samples of favorite fabrics to the first class. The term “arashi” suggests driving storm rains in Japanese woodcut prints. This resist dye technique yields diagonal patterns on natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, silk, bamboo, and rayon. Basic arashi, spider web shibori, willow shibori, bomaki shibori and more will be covered. Students walk away with yards of intricately dyed fabrics for fiber art projects or fabric goods. DEVORÈ: BURN-OUT (5 WEEKS) Devoré is a French verb meaning “to devour.” Designs are burned into the textile, leaving some fibers intact and a resulting cloth that is at once transparent and opaque. Motifs can be painted or printed directly onto the cloth for a variety of lace effects, with dyes yielding two-tone effects due to the altered fiber structures. Students provide all devoré fabrics. Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, each one with its own colorful identity. MEDITATIVE MANDALA
Learn the art of Asian sumi-e ink painting and the symbolism behind it. Spend time experimenting with basic sumi-e brush strokes and techniques. Each participant will create multiple paintings on paper of the traditional Asian flora bamboo, plum blossom, chrysanthemum and orchid. Retreat includes a guided meditation. All levels welcome.
Using guided meditation for focus and clarity, you’ll create intuitive collages that focus on your instinctual decision-making process as a form of sensory storytelling. Explore your personal narrative while incorporating various techniques such as gel image transfers, 3D elements, and charcoal drawing into your collage. Investigate your universe by creating your own mixed-media mandala. Focus on an idea or occurrence that has personal meaning and explore its significance. CANCELLATIONS Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.
Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn, but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from.
• A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary. • Private classes can be set up in any of our departments. • Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.
Pricing structure: $75 per hour for one-on-one instruction $60 per hour, per student for two $50 per hour, per student for three
REFUND POLICY FOR DROPPED CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the Lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop.
