Eager to try something new? Our First-Time programs are an excellent way to learn and create in a relaxed environment. These classes are designed for those who have never taken an art class or are looking to discover a new medium. With seven departments to choose from, you can learn to throw a pot in Ceramics or make jewelry in our Metalsmithing studios, just to name a few.

Workshops Get creative! Explore new materials and techniques while having fun in a supportive and friendly community. Whether registering with friends, family or doing it alone, these hands-on workshops are designed to not only teach you something new but to help spark creativity.

Lillstreet’s long-established Ceramics department offers classes for all skill levels in wheelthrowing, handbuilding, sculpture and more. Advanced students can fine-tune their work or experiment with soda firing. Take advantage of over 200 glaze combinations, firings and state-of-the-art equipment during our generous, free open studio hours.

First-Time Artist First-Time Potter 5 Weeks Dress for mess, and spin the wheel to shape clay into the basic forms of mugs and bowls. Work with various tools and later glaze your pottery. Learn a little handbuilding too, such as pinch pots, bowls and small serving trays. Plan to purchase a clay tool kit at Lillstreet. Class fee includes one 12-pound bag of clay.

Intermediate Wheelthrowing: Altered Forms 10 Weeks This class is an intermediate to advanced class for potters interested in wheel throwing looking to start working out of the round. We will focus on pushing pots from the round into other shapes while using different techniques. We will use handbuilding techniques combined with our thrown and altered pieces to combine multiple thrown forms into more complex wares. Prerequisite: Beginning/Advanced Beginning Wheelthrowing

On the Wheel, Off the Wheel 10 Weeks This class will focus around the idea of creating ceramic works that are somewhat of the ordinary. Using various wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques, we will make sculptural and functional forms that walk the line of visual poetry and functional art. 10 Weeks

Explore new approaches while using red clay to focus on surface design and utilizing the low fire glaze palette. We will do some simple glaze testing and start to build vocabulary around the glaze finish, as the skin of the pot.

Explore the rich history and bright color palette of low-fire ceramic surface decorations. Demonstrations and discussions will involve the use of terra sigillata, underglazes, slips and glazes on terra cotta. Students will learn to mix glazes and slips from basic components.

Soda firing offers ceramic artists the opportunity to infuse a bit of “chance” into their making process. Each week a different surface technique will be demonstrated for use in the soda kiln. Using slips and glazes, the soda-firing process becomes accessible and more predictable. You will participate in all stages of the process, including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time.

This class is designed primarily to help you to develop specific ideas, refine techniques and pursue independent projects with individual guidance.

Prerequisite: One year of experience working with clay or instructor approval

Clay Journey 10 Weeks Chart the steps along your personal journey in clay. Inventory your skill set and create a path forward by setting goals, working in a series and creating personal challenges for growth. Home & Garden Pottery 10 Weeks This independently-driven class begins each week with a potluck and group discussion about ongoing projects. Introduction to Paper Clay 10 Weeks This course introduces students to the possibilities of paper clay in the ceramics studio. As a more forgiving material, students will have hands-on experience in preparing paper clay, various handbuilding construction methods as well as decoration techniques to create piecses. Soda II: Throwing for The Soda Kiln 10 Weeks Analyze the critical steps necessary to create dynamic, inventive ceramic works utilizing the potter’s wheel. This class focuses on using various ceramic hand-building techniques to recreate still life objects in our life. Students will learn to observe the daily objects and translate them into clay forms with personal expressions. Forms, textures, surface and content will be introduced during the process.

Learn to analyze and develop functional handles both aesthetically and physically. We will look into the many different approaches to making handles and talk about the reasons why we make handles the way we do. Explore new ways of seeing form and creating compositions with added embellishments.

Spring Mugs Create a pair of mugs to keep you warm while the days are trying to shake off the last of the winter. You will get to custom make the shape of your mugs and have fun adding texture to the clay. Add handles or leave your creations handleless! You will finish off your mugs by picking glazes to be glazed later by your instructor.

Mother’s Day Vases Treat that important woman in your life to a handmade ceramic vase. Build a functional vase or two in the shape of your choosing, adding textures and decorations to the clay. After constructing your vase, choose a high fire glaze to adorn your beautiful handmade piece.

Ceramics

Learn to silkscreen, toner-litho transfer, monoprint, and stencil on clay forms. You’ll create layered imagery for narrative or decorative purposes. Demonstrations will include printing processes and ceramic construction techniques as well as the creation of finished forms with surface depth for low or high-fire clay bodies. Ceramics students enrolled in the previous session can keep your shelves in the department!

In this one-day workshop, Neil Estrick will talk about the ins and outs of electric kilns. He will cover everything from how to choose and install a kiln that fits your needs to loading, firing and maintaining your kiln. All your kiln questions will be answered in this workshop and so much more!

Immerse yourself in the world of unique clay forms, kinetic works and beautifully decorated surfaces full of depth, humor and color. In this two-day, hands-on workshop you will learn how Momoko finds her ideas and builds inventive clay creations. Momoko will also show multiple surface techniques including sgraffito, sometsuke and mishima – bringing full life to her functional and sculptural works.

The Traveling Sketchbook

The sketchbook is a site of brainstorming, experimentation and observation. We will utilize the sketchbook to its fullest potential by exploring all of these themes in various locations throughout the city as well as in the classroom. Learn to focus on rendering the model directly in color in either soft pastel or in an alla prima oil painting style. There will be a 2-week portrait pose and a 3-week figure pose. Color relationships, the importance of relative values, and lost and found edges will be investigated.

Your ideas become the subject of individualized instruction as you expand your skills as a painter. If you choose, a still life setup will be available each week to further develop your skills in representational painting. This is a class for students with previous painting experience.

Sifting, stenciling and sgraffito are just a few enameling methods you’ll learn in this project-focused class. You’ll use both a kiln and a torch to fire your colorful powdered glass enamels on copper or fine silver. Combine these techniques and have fun experimenting to create unique, colorful jewelry or small sculpture. Metalsmithing experience is helpful but not required. Additional copper and enamel are available for purchase from instructor.

Liquid Form Enamel on Steel 4 Weeks Using low-carbon steel, explore liquid form enamels possibilities through color mixing, watercolor-like washes, sgraffito and spraying liquid enamels. Enameling on Copper Electroforms

Flex those enameling muscles and jump into the illustrative world of enameling. Explore a variety of techniques such as China paint, cloisonné, liquid enamel and champlevé. Combine these techniques to create unique imagery in your work. Copper and additional enamels available for sale.

Learn how to create jewelry and sculpture with copper electroforming processes then use enameling techniques to add color and finishes. Electroforming is a metal plating process that slowly deposits copper on to the surface of objects to create more density and support. We will create work by plating on foils, waxes and plastics. Once we grasp how to electroform copper, we can add color by kiln fusing powder and liquid form glass enamel to your work.

Organic Forms in Silver 4 Weeks So often the term “organic” is misused to describe pieces that are rustic or unfinished. Explore small-scale forging, focusing on rings. Forging allows you to move metal with a hammer, redistributing mass, and changing dimension without losing material. You’ll start by forging copper or brass rod and then move to sterling. Time permitting; we’ll melt clean sterling scrap into ingots and forge from there. Topics include simple model making, tapering, clean up and alternative methods.

Design and fabricate a hollow form bracelet incorporating a hinge and clasp mechanism. Explore a variety of bracelet and hollowware techniques through daily demonstrations and presentations during this hands-on workshop. Mokume-Gane Join Eric Burris as he demonstrates every step in creating a multi-layered, mixed-metal laminate. Using a small furnace and a torch, you’ll learn to bond copper and sterling to form a solid billet and forge it into twisted ring stock or patterned sheet metal. The end result? Create photographs without a camera! Learn the process of photo capture and manipulation using a flatbed scanner. Use the scanner’s unique ability to capture great detail at extremely high resolutions, and learn how to scan and collage in real time on the flatbed; then use Photoshop to combine works together on the computer. Expand your circle of friends while learning embroidery with a contemporary spin. Each week we’ll practice stitches such as the chain stitch, bullion knot and turkey work on a custom sampler designed and printed by the teaching artist. Build layers of thread onto your cloth, leaving with a finished sampler to show off your skills. Material fee includes all supplies.

All it takes is a hook and a ball of yarn, and soon you’ll be crocheting your way to scarves, blankets and other cozy projects! Learn how to hold your hook and make a basic stitch. Natural Dye II

Learn to construct your very own bra. Starting with a very basic commercial pattern, work with the instructor to find your proper measurements and make the bra that will be a perfect fit. Fabric selection and notions like underwires will be discussed and resources will be provided. Students provide materials.

Build on your natural dye experience with a wide range of natural dye techniques. Focus on achieving saturated color and obtain a strong understanding of mordanting processes with dyes such as indigo, cochineal, logwood, and madder on a variety of fabrics. In addition to dyes, students will also examine and practice various shibori methods and techniques.

Needlework is back in vogue, and we’re putting one of the simplest techniques, cross stitch, right at your fingertips. Learn how to read a cross stitch pattern by following a Victorian style rose design. Other techniques will include turning thread and plain stitching. All materials needed to finish your rose cross stitch at home will be provided.

Naturally dye material using the “bundle dye” technique applying flowers and plants directly onto fabric. Leave with a unique scarf and stepby-step guide to repeat the process at home. Serger Basics

Granny Square Get Down

A serger is not only used to professionally finish your seam allowances, it’s also necessary for sewing with stretch fabrics. In order to tackle projects like loungewear, athleticwear and swimwear, you’ll need to learn the intricacies of this complicated machine. Machine threading, manipulating and troubleshooting will be discussed. This is a great option for independent students hoping to expand their practice.

A staple of traditional crochet, the granny square comes in many shapes, sizes, and patterns. Learning the technique behind a small granny square can lead to making afghans, bags, sweaters and tapestries! This workshop will teach chain stitch, double crochet, and crochet in round to make a granny square of any size – from 4x4 inches to 4x4 feet! Materials provided.

Young artists become explorers as they learn to create fearlessly while investigating a variety of media and creative processes. We present opportunities for students to develop critical thinking skills, enhance creativity and build confidence. Students are encouraged to discover their own artistic interests while refining technical abilities. Our classes are kept small and taught by highly skilled teaching artists.

Ages 1-3 Smocks are available, but dress for mess! A caregiver participates with the child in these classes. In order to provide the best quality time with your toddler, kindly refrain from bringing non-registered children to class.

Lil’ Artists 10 Weeks Music and art collide in this fun, creative combination class for our youngest artists. We’ll begin with songs, instruments and dance before moving to the art table to explore paint, collage and clay. These multimedia, sensory art classes are specially designed to nurture your little one’s creativity, build self confidence and develop investigative fine motor skills. Projects emphasize social skills and visual thinking through an inspiring and art-filled time.

Ages 6-8 Ages 3-5 Clay Time Creation 5 Weeks If your child is a fan of playdough, they will love the opportunity to work with real clay! Pinch pots, press molds, coil building and slab-building techniques will be used to create playful pieces and functional wares. Using their hands as a primary tool, kids use their imagination and develop fine motor skills.

Mixed Media Explorations 5 Weeks In this skill-building class, kids will be introduced to new art materials, tools and the work of a new artist each week. Students will learn at least three specific ways to use tools to alter and manipulate material; we’ll then use their new skills to follow their imaginations in creating their own unique artwork. Students will use clay, paint, paper, fabric, and other media.

Plushies 5 Weeks The world of stuffed animals comes alive in this bright and colorful, skill-building class! Kids learn how to imagine, design and hand sew their very own plushies. In this fun intro to design and tactile creativity, we’ll develop our fine motor skills while making small and large plushies using a variety of materials.

Handbuilding & Wheelthrowing 5 Weeks This class is a great opportunity to try your hands at clay. We’ll spend time learning the basic techniques of handbuilding, then practice making pottery on the wheel. The combination of techniques will prepare kids to make great pots and unique sculptures.

Nacho average workshop! Uplevel snack time with your very own handmade platter. Using clay, you will learn how to make one large plate and a small bowl in the center. You’ll have the perfect platter for dips, chips, veggies and more.

Keep those warm thoughts close all year round. Handbuild your own fun, unique desert-themed candle piece to light up your home. We’ll look at different kinds of cacti to base our creations off of and add unique colors and details to our pieces.

Private Lessons Would you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from. • A two-hour minimum commitment is required. • Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three. • No previous experience necessary. • Private classes can be set up in any of our departments. • Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.

Class Age Restrictions: All classes are for ages 16 years and older unless otherwise noted.

Tools & Materials: Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

Cancellations & Refunds (Please Read Carefully)

Cancellations: Classes are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances. Refund Policy For Dropped Classes And Workshops: Tuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Visiting artist workshops and summer camps have separate cancellation policies.
