DAVIO’S IS A PERFECT SPECIAL OCCASION VENUE OR SPOT TO POP INTO FOR HAPPY HOUR. I met my friends there as a preparty for my milestone birthday. It was the perfect setting for our group of eight. We were seated in the semi-private room, ideal for a celebration and conversation. The bar was social and the booths were secluded and romantic for date night. Basically, all occasions were covered. The standouts—besides the exceptional service and elegant atmosphere—were the food and drinks. I’ll be happy to highlight my faves: the philly spring rolls on the appetizer menu were really good and I would go back just for the crab cakes. The bar was fully stocked and my cocktail was tasty. As far as the entrees, the steak was the star. My friend, realtor extraordinaire Mr. IBuyISellHouses Kedric Mallory, raved that it was one of the best he’s had. There’s a really good reason for this. When I talked to Chef Matthew, he stated that Davio’s is very selective about their beef. They only serve prime selections from the finest distributor and are the only restaurant to offer Brandt steaks. Davio’s is the only distributor of this kind of steak in the entire East Coast. There are eight locations, mostly in the New England area. Chef Mathew worked at several area restaurants before making the kitchen at Davio’s his home. He served as chef at Pano’s, Dick and Harry’s, Van Gogh and Bliss before branching out to golf clubs and even serving 10,000 people at a time at the Georgia Dome. While the chef found that experience to be an exhilarating challenge, he said he “wanted to see the smiles on people’s faces, so he transitioned back into fine dining. Chef Matthew has only been at Davio’s about a year and he touts the great food and people. When I asked him why South Fultonites should travel to the Lenox area to sample his fares, he laughed. “It’s a quick 20-minute drive with no traffic and the food is great. There’s even covered parking.” Absolutely order dessert. If you’re watching your carbs, skip the popovers and have chocolates! My party, my sister and her date, my son’s godfather and his girlfriend Brandi Harris and my friend who is a constant fighter for social justice all agreed that they would love to visit again.

Planks: The Core of Your Back Pain? By Pickens A. Patterson III, MD

ey fellas! As the weather finally warms up, many of us are trying to get our abs summer-ready. When it comes to exercises, we know the plank can't be beat for building strong abs from the inside out. The plank, a simple, static bodyweight exercise, contracts all layers of the abdomen. As a result, it is an excellent way to strengthen the core. It involves propping yourself from the floor on your forearms, elbows, and toes, engaging your core muscles to keep you up. Not only is the plank exercise praised for helping sculpt abs, it is said to help with back pain by stabilizing the spine. See, if muscles around the lower back are weak, your body will rely more on passive structures, such as the spinal ligaments, bones, and discs for stability, which puts painful stress on the spine. In educating my patients on managing their lower back pain, I always advise strengthening the core. Taking my own advice, I’ve recently begun doing planks— great way to get my six-pack and protect my spine, right? Unfortunately, as I started seeing results, I challenged myself to increase the length of time for each plank. Increasingly, I would finish with significant pain in my lower back. As a physician, I looked into the paradoxical effect doing the plank exercise was having on my spine-- causing more back pain, rather than helping it. Here’s what I found: The most important element of a good plank is a completely neutral spine. Like any exercise, proper form is king for seeing results and reducing injury. With the plank, increasing the time ruins neutral positioning of the spine and creates impaired stabilization. As gravity begins pulling your abdomen toward the ground, the lumbar region slumps downward into hyper-extension, placing an unreasonable amount of force on the spinal bones and joints. In the end, this can lead to aggravation of low back pain and slower results on those abs. The key to correct this is maintaining proper form and restricting the time each plank is done. This can be done by planking in front of a mirror or using a long stick down the back to ensure even contact with your head, shoulders, spine and hips, and limiting the time to one minute or less. FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH WITH JALAPEÑO SLAW INGREDIENTS (SANDWICH) 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon ground paprika 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Cayenne pepper, to taste Boneless, skinless chicken breasts Vegetable oil (as needed) Sesame seed bun Pickles

DIRECTIONS 1. Mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder and cayenne pepper together in a shallow bowl. 2. Fill your skillet with oil to about 1-inch deep and heat to 350 degrees. 3. Coat your chicken breasts in the flour and seasoning mixture, then carefully place them into the heated oil. 4. Cook until golden brown with an internal temperature of 165 degrees. 5. Lightly toast your sesame seed bun, then top with pickles, fried chicken breast and slaw to taste.

FOR THE SLAW Combine mayo, hot sauce, garlic and dill pickle juice with shredded red cabbage, pickled onions and candied jalapeños.

CARNE ASADA STREET TACOS WITH AVOCADO RELISH INGREDIENTS (TACOS)

1/2 red onion, coarsely chopped 3 cloves garlic, peeled 2 tablespoons adobo sauce

MARINATE THE STEAK IN THE REFRIGERATOR FOR UP TO 24 HOURS FOR EXTRA FLAVOR.

2 tablespoons olive oil 2 teaspoons cumin 2 teaspoons dried oregano Salt and pepper, to taste Choice of steak Fresh flour or corn tortillas Lime, optional

DIRECTIONS 1. Blend the red onion, garlic, adobo sauce, olive oil and seasoning in a food processor or blender, adding water as needed until smooth. 2. Marinate the steak in the mixture for at least 30 minutes prior to grilling. 3. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large grill pan and add the steak, cooking to desired doneness. Let rest in a foil tent for 10 minutes then chop into small pieces and assemble tacos as desired.
